Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/27

Good morning,

Nice day yesterday, the painter came, and now I can't wait for him to give us the estimate. The hardest part is choosing colors.

Diane Sue, wow, that Dooney & Burke is more like a tote bag! :). Muscle Max Live sounds like another great Live workout, thanks for the details. I will put this on my "total body" list of Live workouts to do. I think you would like the Bar Upper Body Live workout. I can'[t figure out how you write all the exercises down on a workout, do you pause and do it while you are doing the workout?

Lynda, another thank you for details on a Live workout.. There was one that I did that had you doing jumping jacks with the firewalker bands, I just did the standard low impact ones. It was awkward, but it worked. Funny, we are supposedly in the "Snow Belt of NY" and I have not put winter tires on any car for about 25 years. I guess they are a good idea, but I thought once radials came out that winter/snow tires were not needed any longer. Both of my purses are buckets, and I know what you mean....I can't find anything that is not in a compartment. Why do we do that? I read somewhere that Kate Spade changed her name...don't remember what it is now. II think because I got married a little later, (32), by that time I was pretty set in my ways and having children was not a priority. I probably would like having grandchildren, but you can't have them without the other...LOL :).

Valerie, oh to be out mowing grass instead of avoiding mud etc. It got up to 68 hear yesterday, but rained most of the day. We will have the greenest grass, once it stops raining. With all the veggies you eat, you probably get all the vitamins you need.

Judy, thanks for the info on that workout, I did not get to it yesterday. how was using the body bar?

Lori, that is so nice how you and Bob met....funny how you thought he was a jerk, then wham....something just clicks. The first time I met John, I was doing ballet stretches ( was taking classes at the time) and he was doing sit ups really vigorously. I said something like, "you my want to slow down, it looks like you're going to hurt yourself"....then he asked me if I took ballet, and that was it....we started talking, meeting at the gym for wine after working out ( believe it or not, at that time the gym had a bar!) ....and the rest is history. LOL on the bra and sock matching. If you have to have OCD, that is not a bad one to have. How do you watch an actual Live workout? I can't see how to get on there, without selecting a workout from the ones already filmed. mmmm....not that I will do that but am curious on how it works.

Josie, did you do the century ride yet or is that this weekend?

Today is my Mom's birthday, and there is a mass being said for her at 8:00 am that my cousin , brother and SIL will be going to. After that, a manicure, then lunch with my friend.

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

PS something is definitely going on with the site.....I keep hitting" Post reply" and nothing happens. I just copied and pasted this whole post to Word so I won't lose it...:(

http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/butternut_squash_black_bean_tostadas.html
this is a link to my birthday dinner. when I tried to paste it into my older post, the whole thing disappeared. don't know what happened. Anyway, this is one of my favorites but depends on good butternut squash to be best. I sometimes use a cold slaw with oil/lime dressing instead of the lettuce. also varies depending on what kind of chili powder you choose. I would like hotter than new mexico or California chilie but DH is a heat wimp.
off to do a mt bike today, as our lovely weather continues.

Hi Ladies,

No workout today. I'm resting in preparation for my long ride tomorrow. I do plan on carbo-loading and maybe getting s sports massage. I have a knot between my shoulder and neck on the left side that I have not been able to get rid off.

Valerie, happy belated birthda! The tostada sound yummy and thank you for the link.

Lori, I do match my running, cycling and workout clothes from head to toe ;)

Deb, it took a long time for me and Norman to decide what colors to use when we painted the interior of our house.

Garance, I hope that you get some grandchildren soon. I love spending time with mine and wish they lived closer.

Judy, I love doing MM and ME. Those are my favorite and have not bought anything else.

Hi to Diane Sue!

Josie

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live Low impact hiit circuit (53 min.). Definitely one of my favorites.

Deb, I would not need snow tires if I didn't live on the side of a mountain. Very steep coming and going and things can get pretty slippery. That sounds like a very interesting first meeting with John. Ballet lessons? Totally cool! We had a modern dance option for P.E. in high school that I loved.

Josie, on the one hand I am happy my older son did not have children with his first wife because they had a rather contentious divorce, but he is living with this new woman and they just adopted two puppies, which seems to be all that they can handle now or maybe ever. My other son is about to move in with his woman friend, so I am hoping one or both of my sons gets married. I like both of these women. I have been reading All the Single Ladies, though, and wonder if this new demographic is a sign that marriage is just not as important as it used to be for women.

Judy, that body bar workout is maybe one I would do on a Sunday. My old padded Firm barbell is easily turned into 20 lbs. with the 5 lb. plates.

Diane Sue, I am too lazy to record all the sets on these Live workouts, so thanks for the rundown. MM looks good. I think yesterday I had a hard time posting too.

Lori, that is a LOT of underwear! There's a lingerie place in Great Barrington called Bra and Girl that I bet you would love. How funny about your husband. I guess he wanted that contact with you. Windy again today and very mild. But by Sunday, they are predicting a bit of snow. Weird.

Valerie, thanks for the recipe. It looks yummy. The comfort Sunday meal this weekend is chilaquiles and tostadas and some kind of chocolate pudding, and we will be going out for that.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Back from our ride.. 2 hrs 40 min. we took several breaks though. we changed where we rode because of fog. Wow Lori, you could skip doing laundry for a LONG time with that much backup! I don't care much and nothing ever matches. If something matches, it's an accident, or because I buy things the same color all the time! Josie best of luck on the ride. Hope the knot gets relaxed before tomorrow.

I still wish people would get married before having children.... I've always felt children should be planned for and wanted, not just an accident or a whim. and as much as I want women to have careers, I hate to see kids all heading off to daycare at 6 mon old. My sister and brother both have 2 children so my parents were Ok with it. My father really didn't like children very much, so maybe I take after him.

My brother, who I am not talking with in a long time now, is having issues with his out of control diabetes. He is getting foot ulcers, and infections. He's quite a bit younger than I am but I think he is headed on a road to amputations. When I last saw him, I tried to convince him to start insulin as his doc recommended and even brought him a blood glucose meter and showed him how to use it. No luck. he eats what he wants, doesn't exercise, won't monitor his glucose... completely non compliant. I don't like what I foresee as his future. and his wife and kids all weigh at least 300 lbs, so they are likely next in line. :( It is scary as he takes care of our mother and my sister can't drive so he is the "wheels".

Today I did Crush it Low Impact live35 minutes, 232 calories. I then did part of Low Impact Hiit Circuit live, 38 minutes, 230 calories. Since it has so much upper emphasis, I went very light or modified by doing something else. I think I would have been better off just doing RWH Low Impact Hiit., since it is the same cardio moves. I did mark some of the start and stop points and write some of the moves down. Not all of them though.

Deb, it really depends on the workout how I get all of the information written down. I keep a spiral notebook open with the name of the workout close by and when there is a slight break I pencil in reps with the number for lunge it may be just lun and oh for overhead etc.. If she has a break period I will add to it. Sometimes when I am done I may put a ? by it or a note that I am unsure because I can't be sure what I wrote :) Once in awhile I pause which is not hard if I am streaming from my laptop or phone because I just tap the screen right quick. Also Cathe lets you know what is coming next at times and things like 3 rnd first then two the rest. If I put that down then I can remember to make those notes later. Yes, the Dooney and Burke is almost like a tote bag. It has two zipper pockets on the front which I always like for my keys and my lipstick. The things I don't want to dig for ) Are you having the interior of your home painted or the exterior? I would like to have ours painted. Normally I would do the inside but our ceilings are really high and the spiral staircase ceiling goes all the way to upstairs. The living room ceiling goes to the second floor level too. It would be a really big job. Also can't do just one room because the kitchen, diningroom, and spriral staircase walls would all have to be one color. The stairs or different. From outside it looks like a turret or something because you see the round brick wall all the way up the side of the house.

Valerie, that recipe looks good. I would like the heat in it too. I do think children get the short end of it a lot. There are good daycare providers out there but, the same not the same love and nurturing they would get at home. Many women have to work because money is an issue so they have to balance work and children if they want them . I think that it is good in these times for a woman to have some career for back up even if they quit working for awhile. I think having both parents married gives the children more security and stability. I think that is the way it was intended to be.
I have a sister in law that is diabetic and she claims to know so much about nutrition and she worked in a hospital kitchen. But she weighs at least 300 lbs and eats things like cheese cake and loads of things she should not eat. She posts terrible dishes on facebook all of the time. Her son is very heavy too. We have tried to encourage him to be more active. When he was young the doctors warned his parents about his weight and kidney problems. But, they really never listened. His wife is heavy and has started doing Sean Ts newest Dance workouts. She was encouraged by some friends. I was hoping that they would get into the nutrition end of it.

Jolie, enjoy the rest up and getting ready for the long ride.

Lynda, I guess we both chose the same workout. Maybe next time I can do the whole thing. I am working into some weights for upper but being very careful with it.

Lorie, I used to buy matching under things in multiple colors but found I hardly used the colored ones. I always ended up opting for beige, buff, and black with an occasional white set.

I don't want to get on a rant here, but you know what? ... you can't out-exercise a bad diet! I saw what my brother ate, and I KNOW his wife has never even heated a microwave dinner. it's fast food all the way, burgers, fries, coke, apple pie. 3 (or however many ) meals a day and that's what their kids were raised on. I could not believe how big they all were when I saw them a couple years ago. I felt like a fragile munchkin, and I'm not a tiny person. the boys were only in their early 20's. HUGE. not 6'8" tall either. they drive everywhere, no activity at all. so sad. Their mother has had at least 2 knee ( both knees x 2) replacements already and she is only mid 50's. Diane sue, at least they are trying to exercise but most people do not have a metabolism for eating cheesecake etc regularly without gaining. I work my butt off and don't lose an ounce, so I can see how it could happen.

anyway, we did a load of yard work later today, but I have to say that 2-3 hours of riding tires me out. I didn't have a lot of energy left over. we did a lot of cardio this week.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I will start over tomorrow. We went to the mass, then stopped in a local coffee shop just to chat for a bit. It was nice.

Valerie, thanks for the link. That site looks interesting. Do you follow/use it a lot? I agree, I think people should be married if they want to have children. I know it shouldn't matter if they are in a committed relationship, but to me, marriage shows a real commitment. It is one of those areas where everyone has a different opinion, and best not to vocalize too much. LOL. I would be very scared if I was your brother ....he must not care about his future? or that of his family either. He must see a doctor once in a while, doesn't the doctor warn him on what's ahead if he doesn't change his habits?

Josie, have fun on the ride today. Did you get that massage?

Lynda, I took ballet when I was very young...from 10-14 I think it was, then decided to take an adult class at a local ballet school when I was in my late 20's, More for the exercise, I always liked the strictness of ballet. You would think that would make me like barre workouts, but it is not the same at all. The Sunday dinner sounds delicious as usual. :).

Diane Sue, great workouts, I noted down the circuit one... I think I have done it, but have to check. Your house design sounds really interesting. We are having the downstairs floor painted interior rooms all except the half bath and the front hall, which right now have wallpaper that I am going to strip. Then I will paint those rooms since they are pretty easy. Also going up the stairs to the second floor, just outside the bedrooms. I may do the living room and dining room the same color, not sure yet. I would like it to kind of flow together.. they are separated by a foyer that I will probably do in a cream, going all the way up, Nothing outrageous, something neutral. Then the kitchen in a gray blue, I am trying to pick up a color from the countertops which are a speckled/white. Sherwin Williams and Home Depot have this app that lets you upload a pic of a room and "try on" different colors on your own walls. I may try that for fun. I'm sure it isn't exact but maybe lets you get the feel of the color in the room. Sorry, that was more than probably anyone wanted to know...LOL :).

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Agility class this morning, then HouseMax. for me.

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday was a rest day. My left shoulder was really bugging me. Going to be sad if this is acting up again. Today will be a SB Supported Barre workout and hamstring workout with ball.

Deb...you can watch the Live workouts by going to the Cathe Live tab. You will see the Live window but it will be black. Once she starts at usually about 9:15ish then it will appear. When the class is over the window goes dark again. Then a couple hours later she posts the recorded workout for all to do. Awesome gow you and John met! Our kitchen is a gray blue. We wanted more of a gray but still happy with how it came out.

Valerie...thanks for the recipe. Very sad about your brother. You are right you need both diet and exercise.

Lynda...what is going on?? Snow coming? Mother nature certainly has a sense of humor!

Diane Sue...yes thanks for the breakdowns. Amazes me you do this!

Josie...have a great ride. Oh completely forgot about that....even though I workout at home my exercise outfit needs to coordinate also. Lol! I am a nut!!! :)

Judy...did you get to the Live Barbell workout? How did using the body bar work for it. Was 20lbs good?

So today the plan is to hang a ceiling mount projector screen in the living room and also the projector on the other end. The tricky part is making it so they blend and not an eyesore. The screen will be no problem as it is enclosed in a nice case and will just blend into the ceiling especially where we are putting it. The projector though not so much. Thinking making it so it can be easily removed and put away. Once all is completely we plan to watch Gone With the Wind tonight. My all time favorite movie and suprisingly my DH enjoys it also. Who would have thought?

Have a great night all!!!

Good Morning Everyone,

Yesterday I did Ab Circuits- No Equipment Abs & Medicine Ball Abs. Then I did an hour of indoor cycling using a YouTube workout. I'm not doing a workout this morning but may do something later today or this evening. I'm planning on doing Live workouts all next week and am putting together a list of the ones I want to do.

I have to take the Apple TV to the Apple Store this weekend. It stopped working on Thursday after I finished doing the Live workouts. The light on it started flashing and I get an error message saying it needs to be restored. I tried all of the troubleshooting tips I could find and couldn't get it to work.

Deb-I really like using the body bar! I should have gotten one along time ago. I need to do some HouseMax today too. That's great that you met your husband at the gym!

Lori-I'm going to do the Live Barbell workout this week. I think 20 lbs will be a good weight. I'm sorry about your shoulder :( I hope it feels better soon. I have also been having some issues with my right shoulder. I notice mostly when doing shoulder presses and overhead tricep presses.

Valerie- that is so true, that you can't out train a bad diet. I'm sorry about your brother.
That recipe for tostadas sounds really good and healthy.

Lynda-I just looked out the window, and it is snowing here. Next week looks like winter, highs in the 30's and lows in the teens.

Diane Sue-that's a great idea to use a notebook while doing the Live workouts. I always used a workout log when I went to the gym and I print out the workout sheets for the Cathe and KCM dvds. I think I'll start putting the Live workouts in a notebook too.

Josie-ME is my favorite Cathe total body workout. MM is a close second. Those are such great workouts, they are classics!

Have a great weekend!

Judy

I get one "food" magazine ..... Eating Well. I use it regularly. I find if funny how much tastes change over years, as do magazines.... new editor, different approach etc. I need "fresh blood" for new food ideas, new ingredients. EW is not vegetarian but they feature a lot of vegie dishes and that's good enough for me. I think I eat pretty "clean" by most standards. I used to subscribe to Cooking Light too but they did a "redo" a few years ago and I didn't like their new format.
I love all kinds of variations on tostados. Lynda that dinner sounds delish.

My brother is stubborn and bull headed. You can't "tell" him anything. he does whatever he wants and thinks there won't be consequences (??) . On my last visit, I tried to show him how easy home glucose monitoring was but he refuses to do it. I was the one who told him he had T2 diabetes 20-25 years ago. he had all the classic signs. he got confirmed by his doctor(s) eventually but I think it took a few years, no matter how I pounded on him. He takes oral meds but they aren't working well enough anymore. He's one of those people who thinks docs are always trying to "con" him. same for nurses, diabetes educators. I warned him about long term consequences of high blood sugars. I KNOW he's heard it from many places by now. he shrugged, blew it off. I don't wish the inevitable consequences on him, but it looks like the start. He's had multiple shoulder surgeries but he doesn't heal well, also a probably consequence.

I am fine with "committed relationships", but most relationships have rough patches and the lack of a real legal commitment makes it too easy to end it and move on. Kids don't go away. IMO children should mean "married". Divorce can be messy, but it should be. It's not like changing breakfast cereal. I don't like seeing men get so disconnected from family. even though my father was a jerk , he was there.

Deb, ballet? I would have hated it!. I am such an ox when it comes to dancing. we had to do dancing for PE in junior HS and I hated that too.

If any parts get sore, I change the focus for a while. I can't see benefit in working an inflamed body part.

I decided to just do some yoga and stretching today. We have family coming over in a bit to help with this kitchen remodel. I did a fitness blender workout, rest, relax, restore, for tight muscles, 32 minutes. Kelly started with the neck and worked down. My knees have been bothering me the last two days. I think have been concentrating on legs a lot through Hammer and Chisel and post rotator cuff problem, they have had a bit too much.

Deb, I have read the colors should kind of flow. I went against that when I painted my upstairs bathroom. Everything is too warm of a color here. A yellow beige. With the skylight in the bathroom everything seemed to glow yellow. I painted it a white with a grey cast. I like it :)
I prefer neutral too, so that I can change colors when I want. We even have copper looking vertical blinds. I want to get rid of all of them. It is kind of one step at a time.

I think family is here so I will be back later.

Back for a bit. :)

Lori, my youngest daughter loves Gone with the Wind and every summer when school was out we could have to sit through it over and over. I still remember being in the kitchen and hearing " Miss Scarlet, Miss Scarlet" . She loves it so much that my granddaughter, 8, is Olivia Scarlet. Funny, after Olivia was born I remember Tracey Staehle naming her baby Scarlet Olivia. Are you going to watch Gone with the WInd on the projection screen?
I hope you don't have shoulder problems. My neck and shoulder problem is a recurring one. I just usually get rid of it much more quickly. Right now I can actually see the swollen area when I use a mirror to look at my back and compare sides. More definition on the right because the left has a swollen look down the line where it hurts.

Valerie, I had PE in Jr high too. I somehow managed to not do it most of the time. I hated it. It was ballroom dancing, square dance , for "fun" the Hokey Pokey" I am clumsy and and it just did not work for me. Along with being bashful.

Judy, that is too bad your Apple TV is not working. I had to do tons of troubleshooting with our Roku at one time but finally got it working. When we moved in it worked for a few weeks and then just would not connect. My Bluetooth tries to pick up on the roku downstairs. I need two Rokus but wonder if they will get confused or something. Next time it won't be the stick though. The print outs are nice. Sometimes I add notes to those too as to how many risers, whether options are there for bar or dumbbells or things that I altered and for what reason.

I got the Apple TV working so we don't have to go to the Apple Store after all. I just had to find the right usb cable (usb-c) to connect Apple TV to the MacBook, then I was able to restore it through iTunes.
