Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/25

This morning I did Cardio Shred, cardio only mix, I was going to do a Z cut cardio, really wanted something that was quick and I knew exactly how long it was going to take. The Z Cuts are taking a bit of time as I write down some notes on each that I am tucking in the holders with each. So, after the first round I stop and make notes. I will do the cardio another day. Maybe tomorrow with a strength. That depends on my energy levels. My morning after was the funeral and this afternoon I made a quick run to Walmart market for a couple of items that I wanted to get for Easter. I did not want to go shopping on the weekend. It will be full of shoppers. Then my daughter came over and we went to Hobby Lobby and got some material so I can help her with her learning to sew. She got a dress for m granddaughter cut out and interfacing fused. So maybe in the next few days she can come over and sew it.
One of the women where my husband works asked if I was going to be upset when he worked late on our anniversary. He said he told her that I have been putting up with him for 45 years and I don't get upset over those things. I was fine with it. We have so many obligations right now and if we don't get out for the special day , we will surely have a date night sometime anyway.
So, I heard them talking on the news about putting cancer warning labels on coffee?? I am wondering where that all came from. The only thing I have read is that some coffee beans are stored and carry molds and can be unhealthy. I think all has something to do with the processing. But, still I don't recall hearing it caused cancer.
Which brings up the cancer our friend had was stage four melanoma. My daughter says that is an ugly cancer and people need to get regular skin checks. He probably discovered it after it had spread. He was 69.

Lori, I don't think I would be checking out workouts if I was that tired. When I am done here I will look at the video clip. I like changing up my rotations. Lots of variety. I don't want to get stuck in a runt.

Deb, I hope the trip to Syracuse was a good one and things went well.

Judy, I will have to check out that Barre cardio workout. Thanks :)

Carolyn, our Easter dinner will not be real elaborate. Brisket, and mashed potatoes, which is easy to have started before church services, rolls, and veggies. I will do some Easter baking , not totally planned, decor, and setting up eggs for a grandchild hunt. We usually put money in the plastic eggs. The older grandchildren all the way up to 21 enjoy the money. Silver dollars this time. We color eggs and often do some crafty thing. :)

Deb best of luck at the doggie outing in Syracuse.
Carolyn, I have not looked at the yoga workout.

I had a f/up to my mammogram of last week. I hate call backs. they wanted to give me an appt next Monday but I called back several times until I got in earlier due to a cancellation. my stress was the charts.
they did another 6 views of the left side. I realize the techs can't say that much, but it turned out to be mainly that my mamm is hard to view because of the pacer battery pack that is under my skin on the left side. it looks, gigantic, and black like a canister vacuum cleaner in my chest. WAY bigger looking that it actually is. Really, it looks like a blimp in there.
the image sucks up all the energy and gives a poor image of the surrounding tissue they need to look at. I waited 90 min after those 6 views and still no one got back to me. I had awful visions... you know how your mind imagines all the worst case scenarios. Finally, the tech got back to me. I think she forgot about me and went to lunch!. it was negative. I am so relieved. I had finally asked another tech to check on my status since the longer I sat there, the more worried I got. the image quality was the only issue.
still coughing and congested. no sleep last 2 nights. combo of sneezing, coughing, stress, no rest. I will not be doing anything for a while. I'm pretty sick. into a bad head cold. no idea where this came from but my first one in years. coughing, sneezing, congested, nose running like crazy. I always get so sick with headcolds it's ridiculous.

Valerie-I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm sure the stress didn't help with you already being sick. I hope that after getting a good result that you can get some rest and start to feel better.

Diane Sue-I will need to schedule a skin screening this year. I've been trying to get Chris to go in too.

Good Morning,
Today I did KCM Step Boxing workout one. That was 35 minutes and 236 calories burned. My average heart rate was 129 and maximum heart rate 152. I didn’t have much time today because I have so much to do. Daughter number 3 is arriving shortly as she is already on her way from the airport. It’s an unexpected pleasure to have her here this weekend.

For those who use My Fitness Pal you should get an alert to change your password. The site was hacked and email addresses and passwords exposed.

Valerie, the stress of getting a call back for your mammogram is terrible. Even when you know what might be causing the problem it is upsetting. I have an appointment Monday morning at 8:45 for my last every six month mammogram. I don’t know why I made an appointment that early! I hope your cold is better soon.

Diane Sue, I heard about the coffee warning also. It is a California requirement because of a very strict law there about possible carcinogens. The coffee roasting process produces something called acrylamide that might cause cancer. It is also produced from roasting vegetables, grilling meat and several other foods. I remember reading this before about grilling meats but I had to go back and read it again with the coffee story. Personally I am not very concerned.

I hear my daughter driving up now. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Carolyn that is a good assessment of the coffee risk. I am personally not worried. I would not give up my coffee!. I also saw that about MFP. I didn't realize Helly Hanson was connected to the site.

Melanoma is scary. DH has a total skin check every year. his sister had melanoma long ago. she was caught early and did fine. Now that I had the squamous cell I need to be checked again in 6 months. I never used tanning beds but I'm an outdoors person and have had exposure, though no bad burns since childhood, when no sunscreen existed. I use sunscreen on my face but lean toward clothing. nylon pants, shirts, hats. Best to find things early on.

Today I started with Z Cut power cardio disc 1 workout #3 with the warm up, 21 minutes, 140 calories, met 6.1, heart rate average 118, max 153, 664 steps. I then did Z Cut Power Strength workout disc 3 workout #11 with the stretch, 26 minutes, met 5.5, 158 calories, 672 steps, heart rate average 106, max 142. I finished off with Ice Metabolic Total Body using weights slightly higher on most moves and skipping the warm up, 41 minutes, 283 calories, met 5.3, 283 calories, 1,198 steps. Total time was 88 minutes, 581 calories.
Z cut power cardio
3 rounds
10 lateral jumps (over a box and I used a child's step to reach things)and burpees
10 mule kicks
20 crab kicks
10 ab splitters (done 2 rounds only, 3 moves count as 1 rep )
Z Cut Power Strength no warm up 3 rounds
30 elevated lunges 15# dbs 15 reps each leg
10 clap push ups burpees (3 clap push ups 1 burpee counts as 1 rep and push ups are done on the knees)
20 sit up twists 15# db 1 rnd, 12# 2 rnd

Valerie, I am sorry that you are sick. Stress will make things worse. That would be worrisome having a call back on a mammogram. I usually wear a light jacket even in the summer when we go out on the motorcycle. It is better to cover up. My hands need sunscreen a lot when I am out. I hate wearing it because most sunscreen breaks my face out if I even brush my face with my hands.

Judy, my daughter gives a screening whenever she manages to get one of us into her office. I had her check my back recently because a spot seemed odd to me. It ended up being nothing.

Carolyn, California has a lot of those kind of laws. Pretty soon we will all be using paper straws. It seems to me there are a lot bigger things than straws that are going into the landfills. I think that one is a bit silly. I read up on the coffee yesterday and I am not worried either. I do not drink excessive amounts of coffee. It is mainly my morning drink and the rest of the day is kombucha and water. Summertime I drink iced coffees which has me drinking it a bit more. I read even raisins have some of the same chemical in them as the coffee. Enjoy your family time. That is great your daughter came in today.
I haven't heard anything about the MFP hack. I change my email password periodically and try not to save too many things.

Good evening ladies, no workout today. My husband received a call last night that his Uncle is not doing well. This was very sudden. They chat every week then this week he took a turn. He lives in Alabama, so Bob booked a flight first thing this morning and I brought him to the airport.

Diane Sue...I get annual skin screens and have been for several years. I have had a few things removed but so far I have been fortunate and all has been benign. Oh no! I am in trouble if coffee is associated with cancer! Oh say it isn’t so!!! Great workouts the past couple of days.

Valerie...how stressful...Glad all is negative and you can relax. Hoping you get thru that cold soon. You sound terrible. :( I am the same way..could never give up my coffee, I love it too much. I am the same ...no bad burns since I was a teen. I am a freak about SPF.

Caroyln...I heard that this morning about MFP. Nothing is safe anymore. I have reviewed all the new KCM and I think I will like this series a lot. Tomorrow I am planning to do Cathe’s most recent low impact live workout and also a build and burn one. Just not sure which.

I wish you luck Deb!!!

Hello to Judy and Janet...Janet I know you are out there having great morning workouts!!!!

Lori, I hope that your husband's uncle is okay. It is good that he can fly out there and check on him. I have had a couple of very small cancers removed. My daughter is always scanning us for unusual things. You can just be standing there talking to her and she will point out something and have to get a better look. My husband learned from his dad to wear a hat whenever he goes outside. His dad had lots of cancers on his head. I have fun with KCM tomorrow and Cathe's low impact live workout :)

Good morning,

Well we did not qualify at the trial....next one is in June.

Judy, I must have missed something...what is "Drop Sets"?

Carolyn, nice workouts...thanks for the info on MFP. I saw that when I went over today. That is scary.

Loir, Sorry to hear about Bob's uncle. I hope all goes well. thanks for posting that link. That is the first time I have seen anyone do a bounce workout! What kind of shoes do you wear? She looks like she is wearing socks of some kind. I need to check out that Live low impact. How was it? This is the one from this week? Low Impact Conditioning? I really like her Live low impact cardio workouts.

Diane Sue, yes, Your Easter plans sound nice. I would think after 45 years, you would be used to his work hours! So sorry for your friend. I had not heard anything about coffee and cancer. It is funny how it goes back and forth about whether coffee is healthy or not, every few years. I thought we were in the "it is healthy for you" stage right now.

Valerie, so good that you finally got the results and they were negative. I can't imagine how stressful that had to be, waiting for the appointment, then sitting there waiting for the results. I hope you feel better and can get some rest now. The stress could only add to it.

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Walk Strong 3 Cardio Interval Sculpt. Today I plan on doing a Spinerval or other indoor ride. Chris was off work for Good Friday and he has Monday off too. We are staying home for Easter and will be getting some things done around the condo. The weather isn't quite good enough to spend much time outside. We still have snow in the forecast for tomorrow and later next week too.
I was planning on starting a body building rotation April 1, using STS and Body Beast. Now I'm thinking of using Drop Sets instead of Body Beast.

Deb-I'm sorry about the trial. Drop Sets is a Barlates series:

Diane Sue-That's really nice that your daughter does your screenings and watches out for things.

Carolyn-I noticed the alerts about MFP too. Seems like so many sites are having these issues.

Hi to Lori & Valerie!

I am still out of commission for activity. this is a really bad one. still feeling awful, getting woke up dozens of times at night with coughing and nose issues. every time I try to do something my nose runs. I feel exhausted and fatigued so not doing anything. interrupted sleep does that to me.
Carolyn yoga disk is Chrissy Carter. I never heard of her but its called "beginning yoga". she goes a little too fast. We only did a piece of it and DH got a phone call he had to take. when we go thru the whole disk, I will report back. there are 3 workouts on the disk, I thought one workout was easier, but DH set up the disk so I didn't see what he went to. this moves quickly. too fast for me to do anything and still look at what he is doing.

DH is always on alert for skin issues since his sister had the melanoma, and he was raised in sunny California. he has always been good about wearing a hat, and keeping back/shoulders covered. he's had a few pre cancerous spots frozen off. yep, men with thinning hair need hats! we both use sunscreen as we are both pale and basically pasty white. I always use sunscreen on my face but am not as good about it on arms and legs.

Are any of you big facebook users? I use it occasionally to look at family pictures people post but that's about it for me.

ETA Deb, too bad you didn't qualify. I am not giving up my coffee for another silly over reaction. two cups a day and I'm happy.

Valerie-I'm sorry you feel so bad :( I hope you feel better soon. I do use Facebook a lot. Chris doesn't have a FB page so we use mine to keep in touch with both his and my family and friends. I also belong to a few Cathe and fitness groups.

This morning I did Body Max 2 premix cardio blast (without the weights), 63 minutes, heart rate average 145, max 180,452 calories, 5,356 steps., met 6.5. I followed it with the abs from the same workout, 9 minutes, 30 calories, 36 steps. I finished off with Z Cut Power yoga, bonus abs, warrior series , and cooldown, 15 minutes, 50 calories, met 3.0, 103 steps. Total time was 87 minutes, 532 calories.

Deb, I think if you overuse anything it can turn into something not good for you. Coffee in moderation should be fine. You can over use probiotic foods as well. When they do these studies, a lot of the time it is if it is used in large quantities that the problems come in. It also depends on if the person already has health issues, meds taken etc. . I am sorry that you did not qualify, I am sure that is a disappointment.

Judy, I have still not seen an alert for MFP anywhere. I like doing drop sets. It is a nice change from the standard workouts. Body Beast does give quite a variety of training methods. I saw the woman that has the Paleo OMG website had been hacked. It is too bad that so much of that is happening.

Valerie, I do find myself outdoors doing things in the yard and the time gets extended without sun screen. I try to set it on the kitchen counter during summer months as a reminder. My makeup has sun screen though. If I am back I am wearing the allergy mask most of the time.
I have a couple of secret fitness sites that I check in on on facebook and keep track of family there, but whisk through and do not spend a lot of time on there. Some people share so much of where they are and what they are doing as well as personal issues, which I think is just not smart. I also avoid the controversy, as I go there for enjoyment and not reading a bunch of stuff to annoy me.

Hi Ladies,
This is a rest day for me. I was undecided about working out when I went to bed last night and felt tired this morning. That usually means that I need a rest. The coffee/cancer situation is full of conflicting information. I agree with Diane Sue, exercise moderation with foods and enjoy life.

Valerie, I’m not giving up my coffee either!

I hope you are all having a wonderful afternoon.

Carolyn, enjoy your rest day. I felt tired, but somewhere the energy came. I read in one article on the coffee issue that it makes somewhat of a difference if you are a fast metabolizer of the caffeine or slow. If you metabolize fast you are more apt to drink more coffee and be able to handle all of that caffeine, where a slow metabolizer is usually safer. Although, I read that decaf is worse ?? I drink mostly decaf coffee with some caffeine in the morning once in awhile. If I have caffeine in the afternoon, I am pretty much guaranteed to still be running on it when I crawl into bed at night and try to sleep. Anyway, I am not worried about it at this point.

Good afternoon ladies,

This morning was a SB advanced upper workout that uses heavy weights. One of the few she has that I use 12’s. I then did a lower body workout from Youtube from Body Barre. Link to the workout I did is below. They have a ton of barre workouts that look right up my alley. Youtube kept suggesting their workouts so I checked them out and liked what I saw. I used my 1.5# ankle weights and loved the burn I got. I followed up with a Lekfit bounce. 76 mins / 453 cal. This afternoon GiGi and I went for 2.5m walk and it was so beautiful here today we loved it.

Bob made it in time to see his Uncle. So far he is still with us and Bob is thrilled for the time he is having with him. I have not spoken with him since this morning. His mom and Dad are arriving today along with several of his cousins. I am glad he is there with his family.

Deb...so sorry about the trials. June will be here before you know it. I recently purchased drop sets too, however, I have not done any of the workouts yet. Hope to add them in soon. They have great reviews so I am looking forward to them. That bounce workout is a great little one. Basic foot work and 2lb hand weights. She is wearing sneakers and for fast bounces I usually wear sneakers (Lekfit or BBS) and I use my Bellicon Trampoline. For lighter gentle bounces I am barefoot (SBF and Bellicon) and use my Jumpsport trampoline which has a softer bounce. My family thinks I am nuts for having both trampolines but I like what I like. :)

Judy....nice to have a 4 day weekend with your husband. Since Bob is away, my son and I plan to watch a movie and have chinese food. We really did not make plans for Easter. It usually is a quite day for us. Today my son, his GF and I went shopping for their new apartment they are moving to. They found a nice apt. right here in town about 3 miles away. I am thrilled they will be close. We went to Kohls and I helped them pick out about $400 in much needed stuff. I surprised them by paying the bill. Told them it is our gift to them for their new apt. They were thrilled and bought me lunch at Chili’s. :) I think STS and Drops Sets sounds like a hard but great rotation!

Valerie...I am sorry to hear how sick you still are. Boy that sounds like a nasty cold that got you. Really hoping it moves on. I use FB a lot too and like Judy, I am active in a few fitness groups. Not sure what I am going to do about FB. Seems like just going on line for anything is risky.

Carolyn...enjoy your rest day.

Diane Sue...great workout today. Your energy level is amazing! My son is still doing Body Beast and loves it. He mentioned when he moves he is going to miss his “moms” weights! Lol! He will live so close I am sure he will be over to workout a few times a week untill he can accumulate his own weights.

Is anyone watching the TV show Good Girls? A friend of mine suggested it to me and I am enjoying it. It is on Monday evenings on NBC and currently, there are 5 episodes out. It is about housewives that rob a grocery store to help ends meet and so on.

Have a great night all!

Lori, your family just doesn't understand the differences and needs of the equipment :) I am sure your son will appreciate being able to come over and use your weights till he can get his own. We need to get some more weights for my husband. We share some of my weight plates and my 20# dumbbells. I use the BowFlex weights when I need 20#. They are bulky for some moves to me though. I was glad to get his 30's when he moved up to 40's.
