Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/18

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I somehow hurt my side, or rib. I am not sure if it is a rib, or a muscle under it that is strained. Not sure if I did it during my workout Monday, ( weights). but on Tuesday after a cardio workout, it was really painful, and is still like that.

Carolyn, great job with S&S PHA! It was on my rotation for yesterday too....one of my favorites! Glad the new furnace works well, and it is sounds like it is more efficient. I bet your bills go down as well, but hard to tell now that the weather is getting warmer.

Valerie, I am with you on the mammo. Good that you did not get hurt when you fell.

Diane Sue, your granddaughter has a good sense of humor! Your daughter is using botox for headaches? I saw an advertisement for that. Don't put off that mammogram!

Lori, wow, 14,000+ steps is awesome! You are so creative with your re-models!

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Well ....there are minor falls ....like this one where I just toppled as I was stopping. Not serious! No bruises or dings.
Deb so something else as a workaround until it settles down.

Lori I have seen magnetic strips before they’re nice because they protect knive edges while freeing up counter space since you don’t need a knife block. Great idea! I would do it except my prep area is an island and no back wall to use.

I also did not see anything about an ice 2 series. Was it in a newsletter? Or posted in another forum?

I hate them but I get them every yr. mammograms! Schedule and get it done My mother got breast ca at 74. Had a lumpectomy , radiation and is still going at 98. J.F.D.I. !

Today I did Strong and Sweaty Cardio Slam, the premix with low impact modifications. Time was 49 minutes with 349 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate 155.

Deb, I’m sorry that you strained a muscle. It sounds like something that could have happened with the weight workout. I hope it feels better in a short period of time.

Valerie, good for you for getting your health appointments taken care of. They can be irritating but best to go ahead and get them done. Cathe asked about interest in ICE 2 in the new workouts thread.

Diane Sue, that Z Cut doesn’t sound like anything I would ever do. I agree with Valerie, don’t delay the mammogram!

Hello to Lori and Judy.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I did a short interval workout on the bike and today I did Barlates 100 Rep Challenge Squat & Kick then Barlates Weighted Barre Core and Upper and I finished with Jessica Smith's latest YouTube Walk & Talk. I think I'm ready for a rest/yoga day tomorrow.

Deb-I'm sorry about your injury :( It's a good idea to take a break. I hope it feels better soon. I agree with Carolyn, it sounds like something from a weight workout.

Valerie- I feel the same way about the mammogram. I dread them more every year. I do feel very strongly about getting them done annually. One of my running friends died from breast cancer in 2009. She had skipped getting a mammogram for at least a couple of years before she was diagnosed, then it was too late :(

Diane Sue-I thought I had a book by Zuzka Light around here but now I can't find it. I've never tried one of her workouts but I agree with you and Lori, she looks incredibly fit.

Lori-Great job with the SB workouts! One of these days I'll have to get back to those. After doing Barlates workouts for a while, I feel like I am getting a little better at these kind of workouts and I'm also seeing more benefits from them.

Carolyn-I agree about ICE 2. I would preorder that anytime. ICE is such a great program. I was very happy to see Cathe's post asking about it.

Today I did Z Cut Power Cardio disc 1 workout 1 with the warm up, bonus abs, and cool down, 42 minutes, met 6.0, 278 calories, heart rate 112 avg., 162 max. The heart rate average was probably higher because I missed some of the Fit Bit time as I paused the watch and forgot to restart. I went by the calories form Map My Fitness and calories burned app, along with met value. I then did my planned Ripped with Hiit Lower body Circuit doing the scrambled express mix that has a few intervals removed, 35 minutes, heart rate average 121, max 154, met. 5.9, 226 calories. I didn't figure I needed more jumping from the intervals anyway. Total time was 77 minutes and calories burned 504.
Z Cut power cardio
50 competition burpees done in between the other moves and extra added at the end
10 tuck jumps done twice
20 jump lunges done twice
30 kick ups (2 kicks counts as 1, much like a crab kick)
40 jacks/side kicks
I did not write down the abs workout moves.
Ripped with Hiit, I used Cathe's weights except on the portions holding a 20# dumbbell because I did not want to use the Bowflex Select tech weight, I used 25#.

Deb, I am sorry your rib cage is hurting. I think sometimes it is just lifting or twisting at a wrong angle that can set things off. I hope it improves quickly. Yes, my daughter is getting the botox for the headaches. I knew she had talked about it before, but did not know that she had done it.

Valerie, that is great that your mother has done so well after breast cancer surgery. I will get it done soon.

Carolyn, Z Cut is different from other workouts that I have. They are short workouts. I think from reading that she generally just does one intense workout. In her streaming she does have yoga and mobility stuff as well. I even saw something about workouts listed as low impact. Since I don't have the streaming I have no idea how those are. The Power Yoga I have is more intense than most yoga workouts and very active. I can understand the workouts not being for everyone. She does some workouts that are similar to CrossFit. She has some good looking recipes and information on her website.

Judy, Zuzka's book is 15 Minutes to Fit. I downloaded the sample from Amazon and read the preface stuff and looked over the table of contents.

Lori, I wondered on her age because I had read 35 on something and then a reviewer had said 51 or something like that. That makes more sense.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did a Lefit bounce that included all the sculpting. I am going to try and do the sculpting once a week. My legs always have slight doms so I know they were worked. total time was 50 mins / 423 cal.

Deb...hope your side is feeling better. Hate when I pull a muscle but unsure how I did it.

Valerie...mamos are necessary evils. Hate but need them. The magnetic strip is only 10 inches and holds 4 knives. Plenty for us.

Carolyn...yes great job on Cardio slam. I think even with the modifications it can be tough. I did the Zcut workouts several years ago and they were so hard. After a few times I lost interest. They had the dread factor for me.

Judy...nice combination of workouts! I ordered Linda’s dropset dvd’s and looking forward to them. Jengollf mentioned they are tough! I love SB but not sure if I am liking this rotation. This week she has a standing reset and relaxation 3 times. Had to sub in other workouts. Hoping next week picks up. I love her workouts so it is easy to find a sub. But I always enjoyed her spring rotation. :(

Diane Sue...nice job on the zcut. You amaze me! I will check out her website. She is also in one of Jillian Michaels programs as one of the exercisers. I think Body Shred? I will look this up.

Hav a great night all!

Lori, so far Z cut is not bad. I am using the rebounder for some of it. One segment of the cardio was plenty. I looked at the moves on workout 2 and decided I would just do one :) There were a lot more moves on workout 2 and down to the floor and up from difficult positions. I will save that for another day. I have a few of Jillian Michael's workouts. Those are some I think I have only done a couple of times. Hers and Bob Harpers. I might have that one. I did read that she was at something of Jillian's . Maybe it was in her introduction on her book. I guess SB's workouts for this rotation are a little low keyed? Maybe you are right and it will pick up. You would think with a spring rotation that it would build up a bit in intensity.

Root canal is done. not as bad as I thought. will get crown placed in about 2 weeks. tooth is OK. I was so stressed about this but it wasn't as awful as I thought. Not a picnic but not painful. mostly just getting equipment at an upper way back tooth is hard.

did shopping this morning. and came across rx bars. bought a peanut butter one. I took one bite. NO. took it home and asked DH to give it a try. I didn't say what I thought. He did, and said, "come on, is this a joke or something?" won't fly here! To the trash. texture and flavor were not close to edible for either of us.
IMO we don't all have the same idea of what tastes good! not trying to be judgmental, just honest. Is bulletproof anything like this? I was at a pharmacy that carries every brand of bar in the world, plus 50 more. made me think of Lara bars or Cliff bars. I can't stand things that are gooey and "raw dough" , sticky tasting. Kind and Luna work for us. . I don't get a lot of extra goodies, so it has to be something with good taste and texture.

no workout today. tomorrow will probably be OK for something.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I think the pain in my side is starting to feel better. so I don't want to aggravate whatever it is. I think it happened when I used 20# DB's on chest flies for the first time. I didn't feel anything strange and was able to complete the set.

Carolyn, thanks for reminding me that cardio slam has that premix with modifications. I skipped it because of the dread factor.

Valerie, good thing it was a minor fall. Good to hear that your root canal is done and was not as bad as you thought.

Judy, good workouts! Yes, it sounds like a yoga/rest day would be nice. I'll have to pull out ICE again and get familiar with the workouts. I know I really liked the series and will look forward to an ICE 2.

Diane Sue, "50 competition burpees"?? Yikes! That is impressive.

Lori, how is the snow there? did that recent storm pass you by?

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb-20 lbs is a lot for chest flies, at least for me. I'm glad you are feeling better. I'm not sure what we are doing this weekend. It's still cold out but we didn't get anymore snow.

Valerie-That is good news about the root canal. I'm going to have to find an RX Bar and try it. I didn't really care for Lara bars, but I like the Clif Nut Butter bars. I also like Luna bars but I haven't had one in ages. I've been buying the Kirkland protein bars from Costco and they are pretty good. Chris loves Gatorade protein bars but they are a little too sweet for me.

Diane Sue- I looked up Zuzka's YouTube channel and she posted about having a low back problem recently. Her workouts sound very challenging. I do have the 15 Minutes to Fit book. I think it's in a box of books that I put in the basement when I was reorganizing and cleaning. I have to find it and look at it again.

Lori-I think you will like the Drop Set series. It's one of my favorite of Linda's. I wonder why SB had a standing reset and relaxation workout 3 times in week? Was it a rest week? I don't think I would like that rotation either.

Hi to Carolyn!

Have a great day!

Judy

I didn't realize how stressed I was about the root canal until after it was done. Our previous dentist retired about a year ago and sold his practice to this guy, so it was the first time I had any procedure, other than brief "check and approve" after cleaning. that added to the uneasiness. it was the hardest tooth to get to! anyway, done, except for seating the crown in a few weeks. procedure was uncomfortable, it wasn't painful.

Judy it was only $1.25 for the bar. worth a try. I don't like sticky, chewy, "raw" texture of this kind of bar. I also have taste and texture issues with anything labeled "protein" , so I avoid them. was amazed at the number of choices at this store. there were dozens of choices, along with the familiar names. I totally failed energy gels too, if you remember. I always carry bars for rides or hikes especially if we don't bring lunch. I like gorp or trail mix but easy to over eat when you have a big bag of it. I do better with a wrapped "beginning and end". I've seen Kirkland bars but never bought any. I would try a sample if they had them available but I don't buy a giant box of something I never tried.

Deb hope your discomfort goes away. I would back off to 15's for a while. I have thought I'd skip new series, but an ICE 2 I would look at.

This morning I did Ramped Up Upper Body. I was interrupted halfway through the workout by a service technician so I ended up doing it in 2 parts. My total time was 55 minutes with 222 calories burned. Average heart rate was 111 and maximum heart rate 144.

The hvac guy had to come back to check the new super duper thermostat that goes with the furnace. He replaced it instead of trying to figure out why it wasn’t operating as it should.

Deb, 20 pounds is heavy for chest flies for me. I am always very careful with them so that I don’t injure my shoulder. I used 15#s today for the chest flies.

Valerie, I’m glad that your dental procedure wasn’t too bad. I was the same way—the anticipation was worse than the actual procedure.

Judy, I love nut butter and I love medjool dates so nut butter bars work well for me. They are filling and keep me satisfied for quite a while. Bulletproof bars are good with a different texture but they are more expensive. I have a couple of recipes that I make occasionally more for a treat than after workouts. My husband likes the Rx bar. He just took one with him to the golf course. I buy them mostly for him.

Hi to Diane Sue and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Today I got done early because my daughter and grandchildren were coming over. We had a pleasant day :) I did Z Cut Power strength disc 1 workout 3 and 4 with the warm up and cool down, 48 minutes, heart rate 106 average, 142 max, 1005 step,s met 5, 265 calories. I then did Fit Split Mixed Impact cardio timesaver mix 1, 29 minutes, 202 calories, met 6.3, 2,532 steps. There is a lot of push ups and burpees in these so far.
I may not do one of the cardio workouts tomorrow. I guess I will preview again first. I think I might need a break tomorrow. I went ahead with workout 4 because it did not have burpees and concentrated a bit on lower body. I am terrible at pistol squats. I have no clue how she gets so low in them. My knees won't do that. She does give alternatives in the previews of the moves though. I can go much lower with my knee I had surgery on than the other one. I am off balance for sure.

workout 3 done in 4 rounds 8# dumbbells
10 overhead squat press 2 dumbbells
10 side burpees and push ups bodyweight
10 pike press knee tucks body weight
10 lunge twists 2 dumbbells
workout 4 8# dumbbells 3 rounds
10 weighted pistols squats 1 dumbbell
10 dive bomber push ups body weight
30 dragon lunge combos 2 dumbbells

Valerie, I would say the RX bars are more like the Lara bars. Fruit and nuts with the addition of egg white protein. I cannot imagine a peanut butter bar myself. I prefer the coconut and nut one or the maple sea salt. I think the Kind and Luna Bars have sugar in them. The Shortbread Bullet Proof bar I get is like a short bread cookie. It is even crumbly like shortbread cookies. I accidentally squashed one in the car trying to get the wrapper off once and had crumbs all over the seat. I am glad to hear that your crowns went went well. It is usually not terribly painful for that part other than trying to hold your mouth open so long while they do all of that prep work. I usually come home with a headache afterward. I like chewy stuff and crunchy things. Something that feels like it has some substance to it myself. It is all a matter of preference. I don't like nutrition bars that remind me of having a mouth full of wheat bran and sugar.

Deb, I was worried about those competition burpees, but she did them in sets between the other work. I am wondering if these workouts are all similar or if they get progressively harder since I am on the first dvd's. I think I have had enough burpees for a couple of days :) I would like to get better at that stuff, but I really do not want to injure myself in the process. I bet it was doing a heavier weight that caused you the pain. You probably used a few other muscles lifting them and getting into position. I have done that.

Judy, I think we are getting rain this weekend. I have eaten Lara bars, but never really loved most of them. I am not a real fan of fruit flavors so that is why my choices are the nuts and maple or coconut flavors. I have eaten the RX bars in the kids version in the apple cinnamon ones which are not bad, chocolate chip is just okay. My grandson 3 loves the peanut butter filled cliff protein bars when I buy them.

Carolyn, you would think when you buy a new furnace that the new thermostat would work. Things are so much more complicated anymore. I saw Bullet Proof had recipes using those bars as pie crusts and crumbled into smoothie bowls and stuff. It seems like it would be kind of an expensive crust.

Diane Sue it sounds like you had a good day with family. Once simple things are definitely much to complicated these days. The thermostat is one of the new smart thermostats that can be connected to wi-fi and operated from phone or tablet as an option. I didn’t connect any of that. I don’t want a smart home! It was not implementing the sleep and wake settings as it should.

Today I received a coupon in the mail directly from the Rx Bar Company which I find to be very strange. Is it because I looked up information on the website or because I recently purchased some in a Kroger store? This is another one of those situations where our data is being monitored for targeted advertising. I don’t like it.

Carolyn, that is really something that I do not like about being tracked. Especially when they even know where you live. So far that has not happened to me. I have sure purchased a lot of them via Sprouts and have done the rebates on the ibotta app for the kids RX bars. It seems lately almost every time I go out somewhere to eat or a store (I think it is the one with wifi and hooks up to my bluetooth) I get notifications wanting me to rate my experience. I keep trying to remember to turn off my bluetooth when I go out. My thermostat is one for our electric companies smart hours that I signed up for. They send messages through it and via texting when prices are up and what hours and it will automatically raise the temperature 2 degrees during peak hours from May to September. I can override it though. It would be nice if leaving town and forgetting to adjust the thermostat to have those other features that you get. It just seems like all of that stuff just means more things to go wrong.

I checked the moves in all of the Z Cut workouts and put them with the dvds. Almost every one of them has burpees of some sort. She must really like these!! I like some of the moves though and the creative differences in some of the workouts. I noticed the bonus abs on the cardios is the same on all 3 dvds and the same with the bonus on the strength dvds.

I will still try the bulletproof if I come across them but I am clearly not liking chewy, gooey, sticky bars. I like crunchy and nuts. I expect Kibnd and Luna have some sugar but I'm fine with that. I don't think it's an issue unless you way over do, and you can overdo on honey or agave as well. No macadamias. no caramel. Lara bars were marginal for me, tasted like they weren't baked long enough. Luna used to make a vanilla almond one I liked but that flavor has disappeared. I could not believe the number of kinds available in this pharmacy... dozens and dozens, all different. no way will stores be able to keep this variety going so the marketplace will sort this out.

did not get in a workout today.

we got a smart thermostat for our MT house. we can track temperature from here. set around 50. if there's a problem it notifies us. we had to have someone go in and fix something this winter, a valve failed and we got alerts on email otherwise we would not have known. we also will need to replace our current furnace here and will need to decide if we want to get a remotely controlled one. it is nice to have but mainly because it's a long way and it gets cold enough there to cause real issues.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.. I will start back tomorrow.

Judy, I am pretty sure I used 20's, but maybe only for one set. I know I was trying to go heavier with all the weights. I found the RX bars in our local Co-op store yesterday, but didn't buy them because the price seemed kind of high. I am going to look further, since everyone said they are in most drugstores etc. Who is Linda again?

Valerie, from what I saw in the Co-Op store yesterday, most RX bars have dates in them, and that is probably why they are chewy. They were double the price that you mentioned in your post. I can understand why you would want that more technical thermostat in the MT house.

Carolyn, sometimes I think the more "techno" something gets the more problems you can have with it. I just wanted a thermostat that you can turn to the heat number you want, but those are not around anymore. I would be afraid that I would accidently turn the furnace off or too low if I did it from somewhere with my phone. :). I wonder how they got your address to send a coupon? If you have one of those shopper's cards, Krogers has your address on file with it.

Diane Sue, I am not too fond of Lara, Luna, or Cliff bars. I used to make my own protein bars, I should go back and find that recipe. Good job on that workout! One set of burpees would be plenty for me.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

Deb this pharmacy has a focus on specialty food products. Tea, cookies ,crackers, higher end condiments. They run a elaborate ad, use it as loss leader to get you in. If a product sells well they might add to regular stock. Otherwise things come and go ...but it’s a bargain while they have it. They had 3 flavors of rx. It was sticky/chewy, like taffy. 7 WW points. Kind and Luna are 7 also. (no point bargains!) I don't use bars as meal replacements, only as a snack when we do several hours hike or ride. WW counts sugar and added sugar in point calculation. Kind is 5gms sugar 6 gms protein. I think they taste like real food, crunchy and nutty and not too sweet. They hold up well in a pack. I have a thing about food textures, and never liked candy. WW doesn't have bulletproof in their data base .

the new WW program gives me 23 points, so 7 points for one little snack is a big chunk out of the day. Carolyn what do you think? I haven't been working hard at WW lately. I don't count points when we're on vacation although I stick to the eating plan pretty closely.

I don't know exactly how the new thermostat works. we could not fix it remotely, but at least we knew furnace was not working properly and were able to pay someone to go in and replace the part. DH learned thermostat, camera, and on demand water heater. I had enough to learn with new appliances. things are similar but not the same as what I have here, so the first few loads of wash need the manual. once if programmed in the settings, it was easy to run.
we have a programmable thermostat here but use manual . I don't want the furnace going on in middle of the night for any reason. it wakes me up every time it goes on and again when it goes off, if I manage to ignore it. we turn heat on when we get up. I don't care how cold it is as long as pipes don't freeze, unusual for here. I will get familiar with the MT thermostat next time over there. too many new things all at once!
