Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/3/19

Today I did Strong and Sweaty PHA Training. My time was 59 minutes with 289 calories burned. My average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 146. I used 2 risers instead of 3 for the squat off the side. I think that using 3 risers is how I hurt my knee last year. I am very careful doing that move these days. Of course I kept having to put the third riser back for step ups! I prefer PHA 2 which has 2 rounds instead of 3 rounds of each set of exercises.

Valerie, don’t give up on Cardio Party. You can do double side steps instead of grapevines. I remember from the Leslie Sansone dvds that she would tell people to just stick with double side steps if they were uncomfortable doing grapevines. The same goes for other dance-like moves. Keep them as steps, knee lifts, or marching instead of dance moves. I think you might like the other parts of the workout with the boxing.

Diane Sue, I have done Rock ‘m Sock ‘m many times, but I just realized that I never even looked at any of the Blizzard Blasts. I should at least preview them.

Hello to Deb, Lori, and Judy. Have a nice day everyone.

This morning I started with Kelly Coffey Step Boxing 2 workout #1 with weights, 32 minutes, 220 calories, met 8.3, 2,772 steps heart rate average 127, max 151. I then did Flex Train, 57 minutes, heart rate 11 average, max 152, 358 calories, met 7.5, 1,921 steps. I finished with Suzanne Bowen Barre Amped relaxation stretch, 15 minutes, met 2.0, 37 calories. Calories burned was 615. I used Cathe's weights in Flex Train. Lots of reps and for some reason it did not seem as easy as I remember it being. Maybe I am just not doing enough high rep workouts. They are not a favorite. Plus moves I do not like. I should make myself do these more I guess. It is freezing cold. We had a storm last night and you could hear the ice beating down. It was loud and woke us up. My husband had to drive in crawling traffic to work this morning. He called and said he had been sitting on the ramp going on to the parkway for several minutes. Not a good sign as his work is quite a distance away. Schools are closed.

Is anyone else having problems with with MFP freezing up and not responding lately? It is getting really annoying. I don't think that the Lite Metabolic workout will be here till Saturday afternoon, so I probably will not be able to do it till Monday. I am looking forward to it :) I am also looking forward to Kelly's Raw foam roller workout she is putting up on her Raw channel. It will be nice to have one that just uses the foam roller again. I have workouts that use one with other things, but I liked it when I had Keli Roberts foam rolling workout that was just foam rolling. I knocked it off onto weights once and cracked it. I always thought that I would try to replace it. Although I pretty much remember what she did with it, I like follow along workouts.

Deb, I just put my 1 lb weight glove on the digital kitchen scale and it showed a lb. So, I guess they are right. I think they feel light till I am punching and doing jacks with them on. I wore a pair of 1 and a half lb gloves today when doing step boxing. With Ibotta, Walmart is easy. Almost instant getting the rebate. I have to look over what they have ahead and add them to the Walmart rebates, which I do while watching tv. You don't have to buy everything that you add to your rebates lists for the store. When I get home I pull up my stores, Walmart and then I click the get rebates button. It picks up the code at the bottom of the Walmart receipt and automatically adds everything for you. You just have to make sure it didn't miss anything, which it rarely does. Then it shows up within minutes in my account. Sprouts is different though. They keep urging me to link a sprouts account with ibotta and I won't do it, I always go to scan receipt which requires me to scan the items bar codes and how many of each item I purchased. It is a lot more effort, but I don't want to go through scanning a code at Sprouts and trying to make that work with Ibotta. I rarely do sprouts specials that require me to scan my cell phone from the pad at the store. I don't like it. It is easier than clipping coupons and then remembering to take them and use them. I prefer getting the cash back anyway. The older pyramid workout never gave much time to change weights. I finally increased enough equipment to be able to have a couple of barbells and sub dumbbells for parts of the exercises so I was not trying to change weights that much.
The only problem we ever had with water coming in was when we had an aerobic septic system and it would rain. The ground was low where they put the tanks and they put a shed on a concrete slab on on side of it which kept water from flowing toward the drainage ditch at the back of the property. The tank would fill up too full and the the sprinklers that usually let off the excess water could not keep up. It would gurgle back up into the sinks in the house. My husband was gone so I did research and ordered a riser to lift the cover higher. I had the septic system people that we had maintain it put it on for me and then I got top soil and sod from my daughters yard that they had dug up for a pool and built up the ground around it. This made all of the difference for us. No more problem.

Valerie, there are so many crazy things that I remember doing as a kid and wonder that I didn't break something or worse. Like climbing trees in the woods by our house and tying rope up in them from tree to tree and trying to walk on it like a tight rope. We were always trying stunts with the bicycles. I imagine we watched to many circus and carnival events or something. I don't know how these kids with the bikes and skate boards haven't broken a lot of bones learning some of the tricks they do with them.
I used to hear jokes about being able to see my feet again. I also had a lot of people tell me looking at me behind you wouldn't have known I was expecting. All 3 of my children stayed right in front. My husband always said it looked like I was carrying around a basket ball under my shirt. Then my babies were all small, the largest being my son at 6# 11 oz.. My oldest daughter was only 5# 12 oz and they induced labor too soon. My doctor was gone and it was pretty stupid. She had premature lungs and had to stay in the hospital in an incubator. It was just those early false labor contractions and the doctor said it was long enough the baby was ready and just took it upon himself to go ahead with it. Labor can be incredibly long sometimes.

Carolyn, the blizzard blasts are much harder than the actual workouts. Just like the one on the Low Impact sweat which has jumping on and off the step. There is jumping, high knee jogs, and that sort of thing with some boxing and kicking drills on the Rock'm Sock'm. You should be able to look at the moves in the users guide. I thought about S&S PHA today, but recalled the higher step and off and on the step moves and chose not to do it. It makes the hips hurt and aggravates the knees some. I saw that the Lite one does not have those moves on it.

Carolyn thank you. I will look at it again after I get over the humiliation of being unable to do even the simplest part. I just stand there kind of dumbfounded when dance moves fly in my face.
I did Rev'd up rumble again. I'm Ok with it, music a little loud but all right. it seems a little too easy but maybe I’m not punching hard enough or should use weighted gloves.. I I like simple moves, But more of them.

nothing happening with the niece. shes been there for 2 days and no progress although they are giving her Pitocin etc to stimulate things.

oh yeah, don’t you wonder how come kids can live past 10 with thoughts of crazy things they see on TV or movies. or think up themselves.

Valerie-Don't feel bad. I can't do dance moves either. I just do like Carolyn said and modify with side steps and other moves until they get back to something I am more comfortable with. I haven't tried Cardio Party yet. Maybe I will look at it today.

Thanks Judy ... I previewed the other workouts but missed looking at cardio party. I didn’t have a lot of time, thought I’d do a 13 min premix, thinking, “how hard can that be?” Silly me! I haven’t looked again to check for doable parts like carolyn suggested.
We are getting some bad winter weather. no biking/hiking anytime soon. we already have a lot of snow from a week ago, and roads are still snow/ice. this time there have been ample warnings and road crews are ready. some wind too, and with heavy snow, will likely knock out power. Tried to buy another snow shovel yesterday but every store was sold out. we have one with the weird bent handle. I don't like it, and use a flat blade garden shovel. a bigger shovel would be nice but not able to find one.

ETA niece had her baby last night. everyone looks fine and happy.

This morning I did Rev’d Up Rumble + Calorie Crush which was 49 minutes and 348 calories burned. My average heart rate was 129 and maximum heart rate was 148.

Valerie, once you preview Cardio Party, I think you will see how it can work for you. Most of the dance moves are just variations of basic moves. The grapevine is a double side step where you step behind. You should do the moves in any manner that works for you.

Judy, I hope you haven’t had power outages during this round of winter storms.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Carolyn-thank you. There are power outages all around us but so far we have been lucky.

Valerie-I saw that about your area getting a lot of snow this weekend. I hope you don't lose power.

Diane Sue-I've had some issues with MFP. It is annoying. I have to delete and reinstall the app on my phone regularly to get it to work. The website version is hit or miss too.

Good morning

No workout yesterday. I am getting here late as I had to be out of the house by 6:15 this morning to babysit. The weather was band in that there were 60 mile an hour winds, I had a hard time keeping my car in the lane on the thruway.

Valerie, the step is used in the Calorie Crush from the Cardio Party DVD, but not in the regular workout. Maybe use your slower option on your DVD player until you get used to it, or like you mentioned, just do parts by doing a TS premix. Carolyn has some good modifications too. Congratulations on your new Great - niece or nephew! Your weather is definitely crazy for the area. John's sister sent him an email describing it too. I have that crazy bent handle shovel too, and hate it. I think it makes it harder to lift and empty.

Carolyn, Nice job on PHA. Kudos for you using 3 risers! The only time I use 2 risers is when the step is used as a weight bench. I like everything PHA! The Live ones are great, as are the DVD workouts.

Diane Sue, it sounds like we are all getting some kind of crazy weather! They still never fixed the MFP bug that makes me have to input 2 workouts, to get the first one ( the one I actually did) to add my calories to the daily calorie suggestion and make it show up in my newsfeed. I gave up going back and forth with them, I just select something from the list that appears and make it 1 minute, and 1 calorie.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

This morning I did Cathe's Fit Split mixed Impact cardio only time saver, 29 minutes, heart rate average 126, max 150 ( I sure felt it should have been higher), 2,525 steps, met 7.5, 200 calories. I took the met level down from what the workout manager has. It just did not coincide with everything else even with my own weight and that met. I am guessing that the met values are based on after burn for those Hiit type workouts. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Cardio Crush , 32 minutes, heart rate average 134, max 158, 2,149 steps, met 8.3, 233 calories. Anyway, the time with the Fit Split is really short because a lot of it is warm up and stretch which takes the heart rate average down. I always have a hard time understanding the way the Hiit workouts work. I finished off with a newer Sarah Beth Yoga on You Tube which held the stretches longer. This was a 20 minute morning yoga that was a bit over 19 minutes, met 2.2, 46 calories, 14 steps :p I have to count all of those steps. Total time was 80 minutes, calories burned 479. Steps 4688.

Valerie, if I do not get a move, I just keep moving. Usually after awhile some of the movement pattern clicks.
I don't know why tv has to make dangerous things look fun or like a challenge. Even when they say don't try this at home, it is sure to be a challenge to try it and master it. Yeah on the baby and everyone being fine. It seems when people know a storm is coming there is a run on the stores for winter weather supplies.
Carolyn, nice job on Rumble with cardio crush today. I keep figuring it is not such an intense workout as most kickbox workouts are.

Judy, another issue that I have with MFP is that it does not give me time to put in all of my workout before it posts it to the Home page and I have to make sure and look and delete the wrong ones. I find myself trying to hurry to get it in. There did not used to be such a problem with them.

Deb, I do not envy you going out in the icy cold and winds. We still have ice patches. Yesterday I could not get the key to turn in my mail box. I finally got to get the mail out today for yesterday. We have a check coming today and I am still waiting. It is supposed to warm up this weekend a bit. I keep checking the weather. I checked be for I responded to our ladies group that has the game day. They are doing a valentines game day on Tuesday. I wanted to look at the map and weather first. She lives in an adjoining city and google maps says it will take me 28 minutes. This is another trip that involves some country area driving. Anyway, it looks fine. I ordered bath bombs which I am going to package up with pink and red ribbon for my gifts. They said 14 gifts for the ladies nothing over a dollar a piece. That is kind of hard to do!! I didn't want to give out candy.

I felt so bad for a lady that I do not really know. My husband said she was most likely driving too fast for the icy conditions. She spun around on the access road by the bank flew up over the curb and rammed into some of their decorative rocks in front. It totally bent in her front wheel and her car. The thing is is was an 1984 car and the poor woman was doing grocery delivery. My heart just went out to her and I sent prayers out for her. The car was probably much needed for work and now she won't have one as she did not have full coverage insurance. Those things are so sad to see.

I'm taking advantage of still having power. got several inches of snow this morning, stopped now. its right at 32 degrees here so its heavy stuff. Deb, when we bought this shovel they ALL had this weird angled handle. ergonomic or something. makes it 2x harder to shovel IMO. the shovel wants to swivel out of your hand downward and dump what you picked up.
we are in what is usually called the "convergence zone" for weather systems. we often get more precip than areas north or south.

ETA I took your advice and did Cardio party, the regular workout. will not be a favorite but the music is fun and energetic feeling.....I modify a lot.... side steps bouncing in place. I am always off timing on their sequence! when their arms are up, mine are down, etc. same with the legs. no matter…. I did it, and feel a little less humiliated. it was not that hard so I will repeat it a few times and see if I improve. will skip the Calorie Crush for now..... that might be a bridge too far.
then I did the chest pyramid, and the ab workout. stuck with 8, 10, 12, but I should move up weight for sure to 10 12 15. I did extra reps with the lighter weight.
I'm working on step outs in the Ab. she does them slow enough to see what to do. I'm awkward, not down quite far enough yet, but I got the idea now. I will get those if I repeat a little more.

I have heard from friends and on the local news that people have done a "run" on groceries. stores have no bread, milk, produce left, and shelves are getting emptied.

Good morning. where is everyone this morning? we didn't lose power ((yet) got done with shoveling and sweeping everything off. there is a good foot of dry snow with some wind. hopefully it will gradually disperse what is hung up in the trees without bringing down trees and big branches. unfortunately there will be more snow and cold. we live at a few hundred feet of elevation, and that is enough for us to get a lot more snow than only a short distance downhill. at least our road is plowed, but there is a solid layer of snow and ice that's not going anywhere soon.

Hello Ladies,
This morning I did Strong and Sweaty Bootcamp for 45 minutes and 246 calories burned. My average heart rate was 119 and maximum heart rate was 153. I haven’t done this workout since last March and couldn’t remember if I liked it. I do! I’m not sure why I have been skipping over it.

I hope everyone is warm and safe with this winter weather. I’m wishing you an uneventful afternoon :).

Today I did a long premix from Fit Split. It was Cardio Shred+push+pull mix. Actual time was 84 minutes, my time for writing and changing weights was 94 minutes, 3,443 steps, 631 calories, met 8 using Map My Fitness. Heart rate average was 113, max 182. I probably should have done the cardio separate since it is such an intense cardio. If I use Cathe's workout manager and my weight equation with her met of 9.3 it would be over 700 calories as hers has it over 800. Anyway, I felt that was way to high, even for the time I spent. We, won't even talk about my Fit Bit. It is rather annoying. Who works that hard for that long and gets 320 calories anyway?? Map my fitness uses the Fit Bit heart rates and it's workout settings.

I think I have went through all of Fit Split in the last two weeks except the metabolic workout. It might be a good one to mix with something from Lite. I got the Lite metabolic this afternoon. The Fit Split one is short.

Valerie, I bet once you have done Cardio Party a few times it will not be too difficult at all. Nice work. I do not like it when they make things in some ergonomic pattern. We have a lighter that is curved and weird. Kind of odd when you light the gas logs in the fireplace. It was all they had at Walmart. There were only two left. Around here the grocery stores get crowded when they forecast bad weather coming and I have seen shelves empty a lot. I try to keep things like canned milk, extra bread in the freezer and plenty of bottled water just in case I cannot get out during the winter months. Paper goods is another thing. Who wants to run out of toilet paper and go out on icy roads for something like that!! We had really long driveways at our last two homes and it was so much work clearing out a path. I remember wishing the neighbor across the street would bring his plow over and clear ours like he did his and the street in front of his house.

Carolyn, I have went back and repeated workouts that I tend to leave alone thinking I did not care for them and really liked them when I did them again. Sometimes I think I must not have been feeling it on the day I last did them or something. I contemplated that workout this morning. I really need to make a plan. I spent way to long deciding this morning.

Hi,

No workout yesterday.

Diane Sue, good workouts! Lots of data to record and count. :) I hope the weather is good for your party this weekend.

Valerie, Right!! that shovel makes you drop the snow you have picked up before you can get it where you want it. I think you will get Cardio Party in just a few more tries.

Hi to Carolyn, Judy, & Lori

Stay warm!

Deb, DH uses that "twisted" shovel, I use a garden shovel since there is not another snow shovel to be had in western WA anywhere right now!
I will keep at Cardio Party. I have no skill... but persistent.

diane sue, I do all the paper goods and a lot of canned things from Costco. I only need kleenex, paper towels and TP about twice a year. DH laughs at me, but I got tired of dragging home paper goods in small packages and then forgetting I needed them them too many times. things that don't outdate get bought in bulk.

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did KCM Abs & Core (Kelly's Favorite Premix, then LiTe Stacked Lower Body and Pyramid Pump Triceps, Thursday I did a Spinerval, yesterday I did Ramped Up Upper Body and today I did Stacked Lower Body.

Deb-those winds are really rough! I'm sorry you had to get out in that.

Valerie-I hope your power stays on. I ordered a bunch of paper goods from Costco last week when we had our big snow storm. We probably won't need anymore for several months. I'm getting tired of buying them in small packages all the time too.

Diane Sue-I've started several support tickets with MFP but they never seem to get resolved. I don't know what's going on with them. Great workout today!

Carolyn-Great job with Strong & Sweaty Bootcamp! That's another one I need to revisit.

Hi to Lori!

Have a good night,

Judy

I am not a great bargain hunter. I don't want to get ripped off either so I keep it from being an aggravation with coupons and "sales". I don't want to run out of important things. for years now, paper goods,. batteries, detergent, some canned food, cereal, soap, at Costco. the store is close, prices are great, and I need to buy only a few times a year. I always used to forget TP or paper towels. Now I have a big ceiling- high shelf in the garage. most bulk things stored there. It works so much better for us.

Deb, it is always so scary when its slippery and you have unpredictable wind added in. I am looking for a plain straight handled shovel, but so far not a single shovel anywhere. some years there is no snow. this year a lot. shovels are scarce in stores now.

Did some shopping and cooking today, since road conditions and traffic were no problem today. we are not done with it yet. Judy, we have not lost power, not even a flicker this time. all it takes is a tree or two to change things.
we are going to try to xc ski tomorrow so I did stacked upper body late today.
