Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/25

Good evening ladies,

Today was a rest day. Last time I took a complete rest day was February 9th. I am due. I do not know why I have such a hard time with rest days. I always feel ready to work out and when I don’t feel like it then I know I should rest (like today). Sometimes this can be a huge stretch of time in between like this one...3 weeks! I know I should take more rest days...at least 1 a week. For a while I was trying to take Mondays or Fridays but been sometime since I have done this. I feel great so I guess it is working for me?

Diane Sue...thanks for the link. I am going to have my husband watch it. Been ages since I have done the complete x10 dvd. Good for you. Not an easy workout. I remember being exhasted when I was done. I seemed to remember iroining my hair at times. Never used the large rollers. Thank goodness they were not in style when I was in highschool.

Deb...a racoon tail!! Good thing it passed! GiGi does love socks. But thankfully she is not a chewer like Chester was. Chester would eat anything. If he could get it in his mouth he would chew it. He chewed a cellphone of mine when smart phones first came out. Took it right off my nightstand and helped himself. I think my neighbors heard me scream when I realized what he had. Lol. Funny though I am smiling right now thinking of this memory.

Valerie...GiGi outgrew the poop eating rather quickly, thank goodness. Chester on the other hand took a few years. In the winter time we would say...stay away from him he just had a poopsicle! So nasty. He eventually lost interest. I never really did the strong and sweaty workouts. I think I only did them a couple of times. Same thing with RWH. I think I was heavily into barre when they came out. Need to revisit them at some point.

Carolyn...I loved Butts and Guts! Was my favorite leg workout for a while and yes a very long one. Not sure I would do the complete workout now as I like to mix things up.

Hi to Judy! Have a great night all!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a Spinerval and today I did KCM Strength and Stamina, Combined Burnout Premix. It took me 72 minutes to do the premix as I had to pause a few times. Calorie burn was 377.

Deb-We ended up with a winter storm here today. It started around 11 am and has been snowing all day. It looks like we will get at least 6 inches by tomorrow, possibly more. I had a facial appointment scheduled but I rescheduled it for next week.

Diane Sue-Thanks for the YouTube link. That is very helpful! I really enjoyed the KCM workout this morning. Now I feel like doing more of hers again.

Valerie-I just looked at LL Bean and I like some of their jeans.

Lori-this is very similar to what my doctor gave me to do for vertigo:
https://www.webmd.com/brain/home-remedies-vertigo#1
If I have another vertigo attack then I'll try them.

Carolyn-Butts & Guts is a tough one! I've also only done it once. I have to put it on my to-do list and try it again.

Have a good night!

Judy

Lori, X10 is a long workout. I was pretty well worn out. I put in SS to do abs and changed my mind. I felt I had had enough working out for the day. I did use the rebounder for some of the high impact jumping moves. I think I have pretty much take one rest day a week unless there was an upcoming vacation or something. For years I did 5 days of long workouts and one that was just a short (45 minute) cardio. I have lightened up a lot :) I have to stop and remind myself once in awhile, that when I am not feeling it, I really do not" have" to do it. It is such a habit. I feel like my day is not right when I miss one though. Gertie is still confused on Sundays when she grabs her toy and waits for me to workout on Sundays and I am not working out.
X10 is one of those workouts that it is only a rare thing for me to want to pull out and do the whole thing.

Judy, Strength and Stamina is such a good workout. I have been enjoying Kelly's workouts. I hope she makes some dvds. Some of the workouts she has been doing on her Vimeo channel look like good ideas.

Good morning,

We got the snow that they predicted overnight. Looks like about 8-10 inches, more or less depending on where you are. John is out snow blowing now so he can get out of the driveway. I'm sure the Subaru can do it, but he does not want to take the chance.

Valerie, good idea to keep the machine threaded with a basic color. I could not do that kick out ab move either....just did the bike move instead. We used to iron each others hair before going out....on the regular ironing board with the clothes iron. My Mom would have fits. Yep, we had one dog that ate his own poop....ugh, its disgusting. Lots of dogs will eat rabbit poop. They say it has nothing to do with being hungry, or the type of food they get...must be a digestive system need or something.

Carolyn, good job on Butts & Guts..:). That is one tough workout. I may have given up on it and sold it on Ebay. Not sure.

Diane Sue, John has vertigo ( rarely now)...he has never tried one of those moves, but I am going to bookmark that video in case it happens again. I actually found that when I was in Tucson, I had the best hair days. Are you able to preview Kelly's workouts on her channel without purchasing?

Lori, yes, they say to take a rest day a week, but if you are feeling good, I'm sure you could wait. It is good for muscle recovery, and to prevent injury. Our dog that ate poop never grew out of it. Also helps not to have it around, if possible, pick up immediately.

Judy, great job on that KCM....I may do that today, or start my week with it on Sunday.

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb, that is quite a bit of snow. If you go to Subscribe from Kelly's website you can click on a button and see all of the workouts. Like Cathes menu looks on hers. You cannot preview them though. She puts some video clips up on facebook though.

This morning I did Rhythmic Step combos 1-3 but not the final challenge. My total time was 52 minutes, 381 calories burned, average heart rate 130 and maximum heart rate 153.

Diane Sue that’s great that you did X 10 for 82 minutes. That’s a tough workout.

Lori, I’m glad that you took a rest day. It can be hard to do that sometimes. Maybe planning in something light for one day of the week as a semi rest day.

Deb, I hope you are doing okay with the weather in your area. I’ve been listening to the weather forecasts and this is a big storm.

Judy, great job with Strength and Stamina! I have decided to revisit some of the workouts that I tried when I was new to working out with weights. I’m sure that my opinion will be different now, just as it was with Butts and Guts.

Valerie, it’s sounds like you’re on the right track with using the step for kick outs and other plank style ab exercises.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Wow Deb, 8 to 10 is a lot of snow. ours is almost all gone except for piles from shoveling. we are likely done for the year at this elevation. will be able to drive to snow and ski for months yet.
we are back in the "almost spring" mode. saw lots of daffodils blooming yesterday. Our ride yesterday was still wearing winter gear. this ride is in deep forest, great trails with plenty of uphill and downhill but not too many big obstacles. I get nervous riding over big exposed tree roots. they get slippery and can cause falls if you slide sideways off them. I jump off and push my bike past too complicated spots. DH gets up steeper sections than I can. there's a grade, not sure what percent, where I can't pedal hard enough and stall out. it takes just as much work to push the bike. I get up most hills but there are a couple that defeat me and probably always will. IMO it's better to go as far as you can, but jump off before you fall over, then push the bike quickly up the grade and jump back on.

Lori that is a long time without a rest day. Mine are unplanned, usually because the day gets away from me and I run out of time.

I did a short spin 20 min. then 60 knee push ups, 48 bicep curls with weight, High reps abs. a busy day and time ran out but it was an intense 45 minutes.

Carolyn, Rhythmic step is one I have not done in a very long time. When I do it again I will probably have to work on my footing all over again.

Valerie, we have bulbs and plants coming out. The weeds are doing great :( I was thinking that I need to put weed and feed on my little yard in back or hand weed. I hate spending the time out there though as it will set off the allergies.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I think I will start back tomorrow. Not sure yet what rotation I will try.

Diane Sue, thanks, I will go over to KCM to see the workouts....not planning on subscribing though.

Carolyn, good job on Rhythmic STep....that has to be a tough. one. I think Cathe's older step workouts were very complicated, at least for us that never really did her step workouts before.

Valerie, We ended up with a foot of snow in the city, but like you mentioned where you are, it is gone on the streets, and only piled up on the curbs etc, Good to understand what is good to do on those hills, and what you should avoid. A fall is not worth it by trying to "prove" you can do it.

Hi to Lori & Judy,

The funeral mass for my friend is today...

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday morning I subbed in LEKfit’s new bounce for cardio shred. I then did FS Push. Total time was 51 mins / 477 cal. I am really enjoying LEKfit now that I do the bounce portions only. They are a huge calorie burner and I feel my legs and core working hard. I read somewhere that rebounding can be considered a metabolic workout and I totally agree. Been a while since I used ankle weights bouncing since I have been doing the fast paced workouts. I decided to add on 1lb ankle weights and I could feel the difference. Going to try 1.5 next.

Judy...I need to check out Strength and Stamina! Seems like it is well liked. Thanks for the link. Will have my husband watch this one too.

Deb...it has been windy and raining hard here. They were predicting 6 to 12 inches but does not look like we will get this. Thank goodness Spring could not come fast enough. We have no plans for the weekend. My husband worked long hours this passed weekend so he is looking forward to doing nothing! I will send you the rotation I made up. It may or may not interest you.

Carolyn...I think that is when I stopped doing Cathe Step with Rhythmic Step. I just could not get it and completely lost intetest at that point. I did step because it was a great workout but was never in love with it.

Diane Sue..how is your shoulders? I think you mentioned they were a little sore. Good you skipped working them yesterday.

Valerie...your workout sounded great. You put a lot into 45 mins. Oh...to start feeling Spring! I can only wish!!

Today I may sub in Cathe’s recent Live “Move It” for todays FS mixed cardio. I m getting a little bored now that I am almost done with this rotation. I will still do the Pull workout scheduled. I need to remember I should keep my rotations to 30 days. Although, I have done pretty good keeping with this 2 month one but I am ready for it to be over!

Have a great weekend all!

I totally failed at step. even "easy" ones are very challenging. I am MUCH better at getting a bike up a hill. When I get "stuck" going uphill, it's not a crash. its a fast dismount!. you will fall left or right if you don't keep moving forward. I push to the point of almost a stop. there is a tendency to pull upward on the handlebars, reducing front wheel traction. I jump off, and push uphill. there is a series of 4 slopes coming out of our ride to the parking area. DH has managed to ride all of them by stopping and resting briefly between the pitches. I have been unable to do the first three, but have got the 4th one. there is a level patch between the pitches. also, bikes may be coming down at the same time, so blocking the trail is not a good idea. I doubt I will get 2 of the pitches, but maybe the middle one.

Not sure what the plan is today. we have an important home owner association meeting this morning that may go for quite a while. weather is pleasant so maybe garden work, spring is sprung here!.

Deb & Lori sounds like you got quite a storm. winter is not over for you yet.

Today I did Kelly Coffey's Slim Sculpting both workouts no swings mix, 60 minutes, 308 calories, heart rate average 111, max 158, 1,546 steps 4.6 met. This is mostly compound strength with several short cardios still using a kettlebell and has the abs divided into two portions of it. I used 20# for most with some 15# for overhead moves and a 10# on one of the cardio segments. Since there was no swings, and I thought I had pushed the full 70 minutes mix with the swings, I did Build and Burn just kettlebell premix, 18 minutes,
heart rate average 128, max 153, 115 calories, met 5.8. I used 20 and 25# kettlebells for this one with 1.5# weighted gloves. I finished off with Sarah Beth You Tube yoga strong and balanced Saturday yoga, 16 minutes, 42 calories (this one moved fairly quickly) Total time was 94 minutes, 465 calories.

Deb, I have several instructors workouts that I would like to stream, but I would not do more than one at a time. I have so many workouts that I don't have time to get to all of them as it is. Someday maybe I will try some of them, but I tend to want to have variety and not spend my time all on one instructors workouts and would feel if I didn't really take advantage while I have paid for a subscription, I am wasting my money. Some like Zuzka Light and Les Mills and a lot of Beach Body Instructors do not seem to make dvds anymore :( I learned a lot of my first step from Cathe and Kelli Roberts. Rhythmic step does have a bit of learning curve but is fun once you have it down.

Lori, my shoulders are much better today. It is mostly the left one that has the nerve damage from that biopsy and that I strained and went to the doctor because of the rotator cuff. I don't push if it bothers me. I prefer shorter rotations. I have done some long ones and for some reason by the end I am welcoming the end. But, then I start looking at all of my options for something new and I feel a little lost. A month or 6 weeks is plenty for a rotation for me.

Valerie, I could never struggle up a hill with a bike. I remember trying when we lived in California and I walked the bike uphill most of the time. My legs were screaming. It was probably partly that I never did it enough to get used to it. I have never went to an HOA meeting. They post the signs and send out letters and email.

No workout for me today. I woke up with a terrible pounding sinus headache and dizziness. I am mostly sitting around doing nothing because head movement makes it hurt more. I hate having days like this!

Lori, you have done a great job with your rotation. I prefer one month rotations for the most part. I am usually ready to move on to something else by 3 1/2 weeks.

Valerie, I could never ride a bike uphill! I admire you for the outdoor activities that you do.

Hi to Deb, Diane Sue, and Judy.

Carolyn, sorry about the headache and dizziness. I hope you can get some relief.

this is funny .. I actually like cranking up a hill! Riding or hiking is easier to me than doing squats and lunges. there are long hills that aren't quite as steep that require endurance and a slow steady pace. I am better at those. I count pedal strokes. our longest hill is about 500 pedal count. it's on a wide dirt road so I got up it at first by doing some long diagonals to cut the steepness a bit. I go directly now. a lot of it is learning (trial and error) to pace yourself properly. these yesterday are short pitches too steep for me to keep moving forward. if the trail were wider, I could zip zag to help, but this a trail...no room. It's just as much work to push the bike, but more than the quads do the work. I doubt I will get all the hill but I think I can get another section.
outdoor riding is not always predictable. you can get surprised by the length and steepness especially if you are used to driving an area. we've bicycled places we're driven, and are always surprised how clueless we are driving because in a car you don't notice a thing. riding and hiking are huge wake up calls as to what elevation changes really mean.

Our HOA meeting was excellent. there are about 150 lots in our development. someone is trying to open a large wedding venue/hotel business which is in total violation of the CC&Rs. it is a FLAGRANT violation. we need to hire a lawyer in addition to getting the county to act on our behalf since our zoning should not allow this type of business, but so far he has ignored all cease and desist orders. . It was wonderful to see all the people who showed up who have worked to get a lot of things done to thwart this business. so far he has ignored us and seems to be forging ahead until he is stopped. it may cost us all money to stop him. he is a real jerk.

Carolyn sorry to hear you are feeling bad. is this spring allergies activating the sinus issues?

Valerie, my riding was on city streets. I hadn't thought of riding diagonally though. I hope they HOA wins against the guy. I wonder if the city is letting it go because it brings revenue? Regardless that should not be allowed.

We are out in the county not a city. we have our own water system and private roads that we pay ourselves to maintain. this jerk would WAY overuse his rights to both water and road use, not to mention overuse of our expensive gate system. we are zoned single family residential. regulations are not as "tight" as in a city and it is unclear how strict they will be. generally counties can be sort of sloppy. we think we can stop this guy, but it will take a lawyer to stop him. would be great if the county just denied a business license. as if it were not aggravating enough.... he is Russian. we have no idea what his assets or back up are.

On city streets you would need to be careful with traffic. we mt bike in undeveloped areas. If I were going uphill in a city, I would not cross the center line to tack back and forth, traffic is too fast and it would put you in the wrong no matter what..... if there was a problem. . hills in cities are not usually very steep unless we are talking San Fran or downtown seattle.
