Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/25

Good evening ladies,

This morning was Hardstrikes and I subbed in Fit Tower Abs for Fit Split Abs. I have never done the FS abs and have no plans too!

I do not even get a phone book anymore. We cancelled our land line a couple of years ago so no need for one. When I did get one we never opened it. Funny years ago growing up I remember looking through the yellow pages for pretty much everything! My have things changed.

Carolyn...I have less than 2 weeks left of the rotation and going to do some WS3 workouts for a week or so before I start my next rotation. I enjoyed them. I can see how that documentary would be upsetting to you having lived it.

Valerie...I graduated in 1979 and we all pretty much had the same hair...long, straight and parted down the middle. Glad the sound on the TV is a little better for you. I hear you on all the low rise jeans.. I see more than I want to at times!! Lol!! I recently been able to buy hi rise leggings which mack me very happy.

Diane Sue...Great KCM workouts today! I a, the same way with jeans. Hard to find a great pair that fits both my thighs and wasit. When I do find a comfortable pair I’ll buy several.

Deb...I am thinking of you and your friend.

Have a great night all! Hi to Judy!

Lori, I am starting to like FS abs somewhat. I keep doing it because I want it to become easy :) It is kind of a challenge. I was the same way with Strong and Sweaty abs. Right now mine are a bit sore after cardio core and the ab/stretch. I like to work abs longer once in awhile, like I would for individual body parts. I have two pair of leggings that have extremely high waists. I am betting both were made in some Asian country. The one pair I ordered from Amazon and I know they were Asian made. The other were Danskin from Walmart. That Pair has to be pulled way up high or the crotch hangs too low. Otherwise, they would be cute. I just find myself trying to keep them pulled up when I work out. My senior year , 1970, there was more smooth straighter styles. That is when they finally started coming out with blow dryers of sorts so I didn't have to sleep on rollers the size of cans to smooth my hair out. We cancelled the land line when my husband was not longer in a position to need to be called in an emergency, just in case the cell phone was not working or something.

Good Morning Everyone,

Monday and yesterday I did Spinervals. I may do another one this morning. It's been awhile since I did 3 cycling days in a row. I'm hoping we can do some outdoor biking soon so I want to be ready. I went to the ENT yesterday. He didn’t think I had an infection so he didn’t want to give me antibiotics. He did prescribe a medrol dose pack. He thinks it's allergies and the pollen started going up last week so I'm sure he's right. He also gave me some exercises to do to help with vertigo.

Deb-Thinking of you ((hugs))

Lori-We get a small phone book for the township we live in but I haven't even looked at it in years. We dropped our land line several years ago too. Doing WS3 workouts sounds like a good plan. I may do them for a couple of weeks in March.

Carolyn-I can understand how emotional watching that documentary would be.

Valerie-I've noticed more mid-rise and high-rise jeans coming out again too. I usually get my jeans from Express, as they fit me the best. I came across another brand I like, Silver Jeans. I've ordered a few pairs and I like them too.
https://www.silverjeans.com/

Diane Sue- I still haven't tried the FS abs yet. I did end up liking S & S abs, so maybe I'll give the FS one a try later this year. Awesome job with the KCM workouts!

Judy

Good morning,

My friend passed away peacefully last evening. It was very sad, but I am glad it did not last longer. It was very difficult on her family. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Carolyn, great workout! Which Strength & Stamina do you like better? I think I would have to be using my sewing machine a couple of time a week to remember how to thread it. I have to keep the book open right next to it all the time.

Valerie, I agree, the thread on the new machines ( at least the one I have) breaks more frequently. I tried all kinds of tension adjustments and it didn;t seem to matter. The woman at the sewing store said I needed to have the machine tuned up, especially since I use it so infrequently. She is probably right. That is so sad about your sister. What will happen when she can no longer be at the house? Yes, it is Polnar that I use too. I have mixed it in plain yogurt and it is pretty good. Takes a lot of stirring though.

Diane Sue, I used to give the dogs Nylabones, until Kylee fractured a tooth on one.....Ugh...no more for her. I do use softer dental bones from Mercola Pets. Also bought some dehydrated sweet potato strips that they enjoy.

Lori, I think you have to try FS Abs just once, so you can see what everyone is complaining about...LOL...:). I don't think I ever did the Bonus abs on the last couple of Cathe series. Not for the FT DVD's and a couple before that. S&S? and another. I still think I should go back and at least try them. We get 2 phone books for some reason...?....I toss one directly into the recycle bin...the other John insists on keeping. He actually uses it.

Judy, that is great that the ENT gave you exercises to try using for the Vertigo. Most will just prescribe meds before trying other options.

Take care,

Judy, I hope the medicine and the exercises help. It seems that I remember KCM posting an exercise from youtube for vertigo. I am thinking these latest ab workouts may be a bit better for the back with all of the plank work. Although not so much for the wrists and shoulders. I do try not to drop too deep on the sude planks though.

Deb, I will be praying for you and your friends family. I am terribly sorry. Your dogs would have such tiny teeth, I could see a nylabone chipping one.

Deb I'm so sorry. You were a good and loyal friend all through this. there is a sense of relief when its clear there is no chance of recovery and suddenly it is all over. Hugs to you.

regarding sewing machines I was told the brand of thread you use is more important on new machines, to buy European thread. I have a lot of old thread left from old projects. I bought a big spool of a medium gray European brand that works for most things I repair. I can't think of the brand name off hand but will look when I get downstairs later. It works better, and is less rethreading, since every thread break means starting over, and making sure you did it correctly. machine has a needle threading device. doesn't make it much easier. since it is close work, I do much better without my contacts in.

we had guests for dinner last night so busy all day abut no workout. will do one today.

Our dog had a big rawhide bone. he managed to unravel it and swallow most . he came inside with a funny look on his face and a little piece of raw hide sticking out of his mouth. it was all connected, so I pulled it out slowly, bit by bit. thought I might need an emergency vet trip. that was the last time he got a rawhide. My aunt had a dog who ate a piece of drapery and ended up needing emergency surgery to clear it.

I still have a land line. for talking to my mother, sister and brother, it works way better than the cell. I can hold the bigger phone between ear and shoulder and type if I'm looking for things online or write notes. Way fewer dropped calls and "echo chamber" connections. I use the cell for a lot of things but not much for calls. we still get some small local phone books but there is not much to them. haven't used one in ages.

I cycle thru a lot of the ab workouts but can't remember the S&S one. I know I asked you all for your favorites. I do the ones from ICE, Xtrain, high reps, but have a list of others. will look at S&S since I don't remember which one it is. also the one from KPC.

Judy glad it's not a serious thing. are you getting tree and grass pollen already? we still have a lot of snow but tree pollen is moderate already. I have trouble with trees and grass but it varies from year to year.

Valerie, my other dog consumed raw hide so fast, I know she did not chew them much. I took them away when I would see them disappearing before my eyes. I have read that they need supervision with them for the very reason of choking. When she was older I tried giving her rawhide and she would drag them around the house with high anxiety, worrying about what to do with them. She would take them and leave them in my room and I would keep giving it back till she finally would take it.
Yes, a lot of thread just frays and comes apart if you do not buy decent thread for the machine. If I remember right there was some move that you were having difficulty with on Strong and Sweaty abs. Family dinner tonight, so I need to get out to pick up books and do some cooking :)

Hello Everyone,
This morning I did Fit Split Boxing only for 35 minutes and 260 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 150.

Deb, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your friend’s family. I’m not sure if I like one Strength and Stamina workout better than the other. I like both at this point. My upper back is sore today. I think it’s from the Kettlebell moves since they are different from everything else that I do.

Judy, it’s good that you were able to see the doctor and rule out an ear infection. My allergies have kicked into gear also with the warm weather and early pollen increase. Trees are blooming all around us.

Lori, I try to do all of the Ab workouts at least once. I don’t always remember them unless I write notes in my workout book, but I remember that I liked the Fit Tower Bonus Abs. I enjoy going back to the WS3 workouts periodically. Technically I am doing week four of the February rotation, but I have changed it quite a bit. There were several workouts included that didn’t appeal to me.

Valerie, I didn’t know that about European threads breaking less. I will remember that in the future.

Diane Sue, I won’t say that I enjoy FS Abs, but I am getting use to them. I can definitely see the benefit of the type of movements that Cathe included in the workout.

Deb-I'm so sorry. I'm keeping you and your friend's family in my thoughts and prayers.

Diane Sue-Thanks, I'll see if I can find the exercise that KCM posted.

Valerie-Yes, we're getting some tree pollen already. From what I have heard this is going to be a bad year for pollen around here.

Carolyn-it started getting warmer here too. All of the snow is melted and it looks and feels like spring.

Judy, I meant to thank you for the link to the jeans. I bookmarked it so I can go back and look at them. Allergies have stayed out here most of the winter. I think there may have been a month or a bit more without the allergens. We have had cedar pollen for quite sometime and right now they are talking about weeds. Pig weed? My husband looked that one up. I have noticed more coughing and sneezing the last couple of days.

Carolyn, I don't love Fit Split abs or Strong and Sweaty Abs, but I do feel they are a good change from some of the others. I can feel them working. Fit Tower seems easy to me in comparison for the abs. I cannot feel much with those rope climbs and the bands. The only thing difficult there is the superman with your arms over the bar. I end up moving away from the tower.

This may be old information. I have not bought new thread in years. plus, it was the opinion of someone in a fabric store. I was told that Gutterman and Mettler...these are the two I have... were better than American brands like coates and clark. I still have some of those too. I used polyester thread since I sew mostly synthetic materials, except for patches on jeans. I don't know if the American brands are made here anymore. I would call brand of thread something to consider if your thread is breaking all the time.

I found jeans the right length for both of us at LL Bean. that ended the awful jean hemming process and it makes shopping simpler.

Deb...I am so sorry to read your friend has passed. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

This morning was a premix of Xtrain Supercuts that I made up plus a 10 min Bellicon Bounce. 46 mins/383 cal. This was my only workout. I feel like I have really slacked off when my evening workouts. Need to get back into them.

Diane Sue...I can’t imagine sleeping with those rollers! I can picture them now. I agree the FT abs are easier. I think that is why I like them. Lol!!

Judy...my husband and I were just talking about going to the Cape Memorial Weekend and bringing the bikes. I love that he has developed a love for biking. Glad there is no infection. What kind of exercises do you do for vertigo? Just curious as my husband seems to have it every now and then. I have not looked at the link you sent but will do when I finish here. :)

Valerie...so scary about the rawhide. We stopped giving our dogs rawhide years ago. It is sad it is still abundant everywhere. GiGi likes to eat socks and that is really bad! We do our best but sometimes when doing laundry she sneaks in and grabs one. She is stealth like! I have heard horror stories about blockage and so far she has been very fortunate. Interesting to know about the thread.

Carolyn...Too funny...I pretty much never do the abs workouts. I know I should but I really do not enjoy ab work. I am fortunate I have a small waist so I can get away with it. I feel all the workouts I do I know I am working my core at the same time and that is plenty for me. I love standing abs though.

Have a good night all.

Lori, my hair always had unruly waves and it was hard to get it to be nice and smooth when the styles went straight. I love my flat iron for getting rid of those waves. I don't buy rawhides often. They are mainly a treat once in awhile. I usually buy them in a smaller stick, because I worry about the big pieces. I remember hearing about a dog on the news that ate a whole bunch of socks. They went in to do surgery and it was unbelievable. Gertie leaves socks and things sit. No interest. My dog Mudd used to snuggle them. She would bury them under her crate mat. I always new that was where to look for the missing socks. Gertie is good about knowing what is hers and what toys belong to the grandchildren or items that are mine. If I hand her a new item, she just knows that was meant to be hers. You are still getting good workouts in. I don't think I could make myself do workouts twice in a day.

Valerie, I have so many spools of thread. Some are pretty old. I should probably dispose of some of the really old ones because they are probably not good for using. I have old wood spools of thread. I don't see those much anymore. It is plastic most of the time.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday...I may start back tomorrow, or wait until Sunday.

Diane Sue, actually our dogs have pretty big teeth. Not as big as Gertie's though...LOL...I also used those large rollers, or even coffee cans when my hair was very long. Did not sleep on the cans, but used them as rollers. I could not live without my flat iron!

Valerie, thanks for the info on the thread. When I bought my machine, the woman in the store gave me a brand to use, and I try to buy that when I need thread. I am not sure if it is European or not. We were told by the vet not to give Keegan rawhide when he was diagnosed with bladder stones....not sure why though. I have had dogs choke on them if they swallow a piece too large. We still have a land line too. I find them much more pleasant to talk on. Will not give mine up unless the price goes sky high. Edited to add: yes, it was Gutterman thread that was recommended.

Carolyn, I am envious of you with trees blooming already! I guess I like both of the KCM Strength & Stamina as well.

Judy, it looks like spring here too, except they are predicting up to 10 inches of snow tomorrow. We always have one big blast before spring.

Lori, That Gigi! :). a sock eater? Keegan swallowed a raccoon tail once...the whole thing! John had them for fly tying, and gave him one to play with.....it was gone in a few minutes. My friend who raised and trained dogs for years told us to give him some soft bread slices, that the bread would wrap around whatever was inside him and ease it out. Yep, it came out over a couple of days. We were lucky.

Take care,

Diane sue I Looked at the KCM link you posted. That is a version of the epley maneuver to treat vertigo. It is a way of readjusting the ear particles that have gotten out of place in the semi circular canals in the inner ear. you can do it yourself right away rather than wait for a doctor to do it. We used to hand out a direction sheet showing patients how to do it, but it’s much easier to see on Utube. It’s a really common problem and people prone to it often have it more than once.

Gutterman thread... I got that brand when I needed thread. German? I bought a large spool of medium gray and use it for almost everything. easier to keep loaded a basic color on the machine.

I did most of S&S ramped upper and the abs too. diane sue, you are right, I didn’t like the “kick out “ ab maneuver. I tried putting my hand on a step and was able to do it a little better but it is awkward. It looks so simple when cathe does it, but I lose balance on it and it seems more of a shoulder workout than abs . Somehow the moves don’t flow for me in this one ....seem too easy or just clunky. side plank kind of moves don't work well for me. I started out planning on a shorter premix, then added a couple others. Ended up doing most of it but out of order. Had to turn the music off again. Too loud, awful can’t listen to it at all. Ugh. the new tv did not make this sound any better.

Dogs!! Just when you think they are almost human ...they do something like eat a raccoon tail!! our guy would sometimes eat poop, like runny green cow flops!! OMG.... made me not worry much about fancy "flavors" of dog food.

Oh those awful giant rollers!! I used them too, and used to sleep in them sometimes. then I would iron my hair since it was still too wavy. that was before flat irons and was a bit risky since irons easily got too hot. Now, I could not live without my flat iron.

Today I did Butts and Guts for 1 hour 21 minutes and 288 calories burned. Average heart rate was 105 and maximum heart rate 143. This was just my second time doing this workout in all the years that I have owned it. I was new to doing Cathe workouts when I tried it before and it was so hard! I have avoided it ever since. Today I wanted to challenge myself to do it again since it is listed on the rotation. Now I find it too long for what I want to do, but it was okay. It has some of everything so my lower body is well worked.

We still have a land line and have no plans to get rid of it. We only get a small local phone book which I try to recycle immediately.

Lori, I have often thought that you get plenty of ab work with the type of workouts that you have been doing.

Hello to everyone. I hope you have a nice afternoon.

Today I did X10, 82 minutes, 581 calories, met 6.5, heart rate average 136, max 185, 5,993 steps, 72% peak, 16% cardio, 7% fat zone. This was frustrating calculating as if I took what Fit Bit says I would be 503 calories and actually I think my met should be at least 7. The workout manager has met 8.5, 760 calories. My calorie calculator has 719 calories net and this is using a lower VO2 max than I am. The thing is doing the lighter low impact workouts like Fit Split my met value came to 6.0 and often is in that area or 5.8. This is a much more intense workout than those. Just airing my annoyance here  I always tend to mix X10 and Tabatacise up in my mind till I start doing them. I forgot how much shoulder work there is in X10. I wanted to do Fit Split push and pull this week, but there is not a mix omitting the shoulders so I may do something else. My left shoulder/trap area hurts this afternoon.

Deb, it seemed like I was always trying to find a better way to smooth and straighten my hair back then. They had large sponge rollers, but I always ended up with dried dents where the fasteners were on my hair. Then it never stayed. Living in Arizona desert I would sweat and it was soon frazzled anyway. I will have to look for Gutterman thread.

Valerie, that kick out maneuver took me a bit to master. I noticed that Cathe changes the leg on the floor position the second time through. I worked at it till I found the most comfortable way to balance into it, now it is not so hard. I am always glad when I am done though. Kelly does a kick through move with her hands on the step and brings one arm in as she kicks through. A bit different though, but could be subbed. Yew, on eating poop. I have read that some dogs do that. Those flat irons were one of the best inventions :)

Carolyn, another reason I kept the land line as long as I did, was the connection was better when I talked to my Dad, as he wore a hearing aid and had a hard time hearing. There are some good pre-mixes on butts and guts and also you can just do portions. I like to do the bonus work together. I have done that workout many times.

Carolyn, I haven't done B&G in ages, but 288 seems low for a calorie burn.

I love the convenience of a cell, but when I talk to people in my family, whose hearing is not great, a land line is by far best. also, like I mentioned, if I am looking for things for my sister online, I can hold the land line phone on my shoulder while I type. I also like knowing where the phone is in the house. we have 4 scattered around. we are good about putting them back on the chargers. I do not like to carry my cell around the house. SIL used to call on her lunch break from a speaker in her car, and it was so broken up and disconnected.... we finally told her to skip it and call from home later. . we could not hear her and it was a constant conversation of , "what did you say? can you repeat that?"

we did a mt bike today at our favorite place. was very nice. mostly sunny, a bit windy, but mostly all alone. saw 2 bikers heading in, and 4 people walking in 2 hours. haven't ridden in a couple weeks due to the snow. does not take long to lose skills.

I've read a lot of dogs will eat poop, especially that of grass eating animals. Ugh. Ick. Our guy was very well fed, no reason for it. he was not starving. assume it tastes good to them.

I am going to work on the kick thru move since it shows up other places too. I think I was on the right track by using a step. my wrists don't like the angle of the flat hand and a lot of weight on it. I block the step against the treadmill so it doesn't slide away from me.

Valerie, I think the calorie burn was not higher because there is so much floor work in Butts and Guts. The standing leg work was only 30 minutes.

Diane Sue, I considered doing a premix but decided to do the entire thing to get over my avoidance issue :). Next time I will do a premix.
