Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/24

Deb if John has a standard exercise bike, it won't work like a spin bike. posture is different, the sit position is different. we had an ancient Precor standard exercise bike. to use it, I modified the seat. it did not have a way to change seats like newer bikes do. it was a big wide dish shaped thing that IMO was incredibly uncomfortable. I took the cover material off, sawed the sides off to narrow it, then stapled the cover back on. THEN I could use it. I used it as a warm up and for therapy after ACL knee surgery. DH never liked it so we gave it to his sister, who promptly built up the seat so it was huge and padded again. our spin bike has a narrow firm seat more like a real bicycle seat. with spinning, you spend a good part of the time standing anyway, a completely different position. spin bikes have adjustable handle bars too. Our spinner is mid range price, not like a Pelton, but not $300 either. around $1200. DH and I use it a lot and we wanted something to hold up to regular use by 2 people.

I like movies and series. I try to watch whats new and interesting. a lot of "time wasting junk" on all channels and there's no way to check out everything so I use screening for better and more interesting things to watch. I use award shows to help me. I haven't seen most movies yet. I generally don't like movies without much story line, like Roma. I don't think anyone but maybe a real film buff would enjoy it. Blackkklansman was very good. I know I didn't spell that right. we saw Free Solo., the documentary about the guy who climbs el cap without rope or protection, bottom to top while being filmed. most of it is not interesting, until the last sequences where he is climbing. want to see Green Book, bohemian rhapsody, Star is born, First Man, Beale Street. the Favourite. Will You Ever Forgive Me. severl more, but that's why I keep a list. work thru it as they become available. I doubt I'd like Black Panther or any animated things.

Ticks and fleas are developing resistance to some products, so maybe the formulation for Frontline changed? I read some products that used to work well don't anymore, so maybe what your dog had before is not identical.

I did Kelly Coffey Cardio Blast Plyo Blast, 39 (37 actual) minutes (longer than I remembered), heart rate average 128, max 158, 248 calories, 3,016 steps. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Legs and Glutes finisher,16 minutes, 114 average, 152 max heart rate, met 6.0, 87 calories, 703 steps, and ended with Cathe Lite abs #2 and extended stretch #2, 22 minutes, 71 calories, 115 steps. Total time was 77 minutes, 406 calories, 3,833 steps. I figured lower body finisher was perfect for using with the plyo blast workout.
Legs and Glutes Finisher weights
squats 20# dbs followed by fast squats then toes out fast squats body weight
front lunges w/ pulses 20# dbs then regular lunges alternating folloed up with lunge shooters no weight
reverse lunge down up down 20# dbs alternating followed by alternating reverse lunge touch the floor
front/side/together lunge squat move 15# dbs 2 sets followed by split lunge hop then out hop then back alternating sides
Finished off with single leg and double leg bridges (I used 15 # db on hips) also does some with knees in and out movement.

Thinking about supplements, I started researching after reading that not all probiotics are right for all people. Some of them like ones that are usually in yogurt actually cause histamine problems for people with allergies. There is some that actually help lower the histamine problem. Culturelle is a good one for allergies. I checked and the garden of life protein powder and my Vitamin Code Vitamins probiotics have once that are not so good for allergies.

Carolyn, I often wonder why sometimes the calorie burn can be way off from what the same workout normally is for me. I ordered some more multi collagen from Dr Axe this afternoon. I got 10 dollars off with their code, but by the time they added their shipping and tax it was the same or maybe a bit more than I usually get it at Amazon for. I let up on purchasing supplements and then realize that is why I was doing so well and suddenly start noticing I need them. I get tired of the expense. I don't do low impact challenge that often. I always find I get a decent calorie burn and step count, but I have never found it an enjoyable workout.

Valerie, I like it when my husband and I find a series that we both enjoy to go through. I think I have seen Black Panther, but I don't remember it so it must not have made an impression. My husband doesn't watch animated shows, so I don't think what I saw was animated. They did change the formula of Frontline a year or so ago. I was using Frontline Plus and they changed it to Frontline Gold. I think you can still get both. They tried the oral flea and tick med once and Gertie vomited. So, I won't do that again. I was a bit leary of something that kills fleas and ticks being ingested anyway.

I think Black Panther is a superhero sci fi thing. made a lot of money but think its more of a teen type movie. I cant get thru that kind of thing. took the day off today.

Good morning,

A long PT session yesterday. Now they are treating my hip and my knee..

Diane Sue, I hope your neck /traps are better today. I don't remember Low Impact Challenge....what type of workout is it? From one of the series? I think she named too many with the start of "Low Impact" I can't differentiate them...LOL :). I don't like the thought of dogs ingesting flea/tick meds either. I cringe when someone tells me that they give their dog a combo med of heartworm, and flea stuff that is ingested. I am going to stop the year round heartworm and only do the spring/summer months. It means getting them tested each year, instead of every other year, but that is fine. It equals the same amount of expense anyway.

Carolyn, good job on PHA2. I feel that this is one of Cathe's best styles of weight workouts.

Valerie, yes, its a standard bike...I could never in a million years convince him to buy a spin bike. He didn't know what spinning was, and was really not interested in hearing about it. His bike was not cheap, but not that expensive either...somewhere between $500-$700..it has all kinds of bells and whistles, Bluetooth, special workouts...

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Deb, Low Impact Challenge is a step workout from the Low Impact Series. I omitted the bonus addition from this one because they use light dumbbells and those moves are shoulder intensive. It seems my vet has started testing every year for the heart worms anyway. He also gave me a brochure about dog flu. He said it seems to be going around quite a lot. Not as heavy in our area, but if the dog is going to be around other dogs or environments where they might pick it up I might want to consider a vaccine. Since Gertie is not around other dogs I am not doing it. I am holding of the flea tick med till I can get this stuff cleared up on her.

Deb I like regular workout bicycles except for the seats. its easy to get in a reasonable workout and be able to watch something on TV or screen since you are not bouncing around much. I cannot sit on big wide seats. my butt protests vehemently! I'm used to a high firm narrow seat from outdoor bikes. I used to get a good workout on the old Precor but mainly I used it for a warm up and then switched to treadmill or elliptical. If you can use it for some lower body work without making your hip hurt, go for it.
Right on the Low Impact term getting confusing. I would have to look at the disk to know which one we are talking about. I probably never did it if it's mainly step.

Carolyn, Black Panther looked like a special effects movie to me, and those usually fall flat on home TV screens. A lot of people liked it, did great at box office. I have skipped all superhero movies... spiderman, superman, wonderwoman, etc.
we watched another new movie, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Coen brothers movie. not as bad as Roma, but not ranking high with me either.

Today I did Jessica Smith’s 15 Minute Calorie Burst. It was 15 minutes and 127 calories burned. Average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 149. I followed that with Ellen Barrett’s Peace Love and Cardio which is a fusion of standing pilates, yoga, and walking. That was 30 minutes and 166 calories burned. My average heart rate was 117 and maximum heart rate was 153. I feel like I need a change of pace in my workouts for a few days.

Deb, I like the PHA workouts too, although there are times when I want a straight strength training session without the cardio effect. We had a basic exercise bike for many years, but replaced it with the spinning cycle when it wore out.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Today I did Lite Cardio Party, 40 minutes, heart rate average 137, max 164, 283 calories, 3,799 steps. I then did Coffey FIt Raw Boxing and Drills 30 minutes, 220 calories, met 8.3, 2,534 steps. I finished off with YouTube Sarah Beth energizing morning yoga burn 15 minutes, 38 calories, met 3.0. Total time was 85 minutes, calories burned 542, 6,333 steps. It never got over 24 degrees today. At least of the ice was cleared off the roads by this afternoon. There was not school the last two day. I managed to run around the corner to the store.

Valerie, I think it just depends on what you like in movies. I am not a big fan of sad movies and dramas unless they are a heroic type story. My husband and I watch most adventures, lots of action adventure type moves. I think that we own most of them. I did like Dead pool which I guess was more of a superhero spoof?? Anything with time travel we usually watch. I do get into a few other series. We just watched a couple of Designated Survivor that we missed from the series and the Flash series which we have watched before. When I had both a treadmill and the spin bike along with the Bowflex I used sometimes do a little time on each. The Bowflex I could row with.

Carolyn, I think I liked Black Panther. I just do not remember it well. I guess I should suggest we watch it again. I think we own it.

We did a hike this morning in a local park, fair amount of up and downhill, about an hour and 10, beautiful morning. kind of windy so we did one uphill twice to avoid walking down in the wind. later we did some more wood chopping, probably another hour. I can't do it steadily, I get out of breath.... it is such an exertion. some walking around our lower yard. saw lots of deer, wandering right past us, and fed a big hubbard squash to the neighbors pigs. he has a coal black sow, must be 200 lbs, and 5 young ones, who are getting big too. . they are a real kick to watch, especially as they devour a really hard shelled winter squash. wow. they come running when they see us approaching, and we have only fed them a few times. they completely excavate his yard taking out blackberries and everything else.
speaking of Black Panther, I really like Michael Jordan, have followed him since The Wire. he was just a skinny kid back then. also in Friday Night Lights. He is in Black Panther but I don't think I will like that movie.

there are some people who seem to come right off the screen to me, like they become "real". not sure what that quality is. Emma Thompson has it. Claire Foy. Regina King. Heath Ledger. there are others too, not always acclaimed actors, but people I try to watch when I can. I'm not sure how to describe my taste in movies. "mixed bag" maybe!. we saw another last week called "Beautiful Boy" that was quite good.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Diane Sue, I am taking Ike to the vet today for his rabies shot. I am going to ask about the heartworm testing, and the testing etc. We had some talk about dog flu here, after a pretty large dog show, but it ended up that the dogs that supposedly had it, did not. Thanks for the info on the Low Impact workout...I'm sure if I got it with the series, I would have sold it on Ebay.

Valerie, I will keep trying the bike, as long as he keeps it at 10 minutes, just a warm up, I will be ok. Any longer would be awful. It's the seat comfort ( or lack thereof) and the boredom. I have no TV down there, only a tv to use for streaming and DVD's Maybe I could stream something on YouTube. Right now I am watching NYPD Blue...on season 11. I used to watch it when it was on regular TV...forgot how good it was. The story lines and acting are tremendous.

Judy, how is the training going?

Hi to Carolyn, and Lori,

Take care,

Deb I totally understand about the bike seat and the boredom. those were exactly my problems. when we had cable, used to be some choices. then cable choices deteriorated so it ended up "57 channels and nothing on". we can't stream to the exercise room TV, doesn't work. Exercise bikes usually have big dish shaped seats. you slide back to the only position possible. it's a bad one for me.
I used to watch cooking shows or recorded DVDs, or preview new workouts. Long ago I watched MTV. does John use the bike often ? he probably has the same problems. your brain needs to be occupied during exercise or its very hard to keep it up. outdoor things are interesting enough so boredom is not a problem.

My brothers dog had heartworm, and it was devastating. very expensive to treat and the dog had serious damage from it. have not talked to him since the will business, but the dog was not going to last long. his judgement is poor, all his pets have big problems because he tries to save money and ends up spending even more to fix a preventable problem.

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride. Yesterday I did LITE Metabolic Blast and Pyramid Pump Upper Body and today I did RWH Lift it Hiit it Legs and LITE Extended Stretch 1. I plan on taking rest days over the weekend. I'll probably do Yin Yoga tomorrow.
The training at Home Depot is going pretty well. Most of it is on the computer so a lot of sitting right now. I have 4 more days of training, then it looks like I am off the week of 3/11 and start with my regular schedule on 3/18. The weather forecast is not good at all through the 14th, with cold and snow in the forecast so I'm sure the garden center will not be open. The week of the 18th I have 2 days of 6-10, 1 day of 7-1 and then a 6-12 shift on Saturday.

Deb-I always need to have something to watch when I ride, whether it's a cycle specific workout or something like a movie or other program. I don't think I could ride inside very long without something on. Can you get Amazon prime on your TV? Maybe you could watch something that way.

Valerie-That's so sad about your brother's dog. We use Advantage Multi on our cats, but I think that is a relatively new thing. I don't think that heartworm in cats is as prevalent or devastating as in dogs, but we use the preventative just to be safe.

Diane Sue-Great workouts as usual this week!

Carolyn-Nice job with the Jessica Smith and Ellen Barrett workouts. I know what you mean about needing a change of pace in workouts.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Today I did LiTE Strong Stacked Sets Lower Body for 43 minutes and 268 calories burned. Average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 151.

I totally agree that you need a distraction when using cardio equipment. I listen to music when I’m on the treadmill with the television on in the background. I have several playlists that I created for the treadmill. My husband watches the golf channel or golf training videos.

Deb, maybe you can stream a movie or a cardio workout when you are on the bike. Anything to help the time pass.

Judy, nice workouts this week. How do you feel about your work schedule? The Ellen Barrett workouts remind me of some of Jessica Smith’s but done barefoot. Maybe a combination of Jessica and Linda Wooldridge.

Hello to Diane Sue, Valerie, and Lori.

Carolyn-I'll have to look at Ellen Barrett's workouts. They sound like something I would like. I'm ok with the morning schedule, but it will be an adjustment for me to get used to being at work that early. I'm not thrilled with a 6 hour shift on the weekends but I know that is their busiest time and since the position is seasonal/temporary, I can deal with it for a few months.

We did a mt bike on trails for 2 hrs 10 min. state park is out of the "snow zone". turns out they are having a bike race tomorrow, so trails were in great shape. we haven't ridden in almost a month and also first time on trails with new bikes. I had more "fast dismounts" than usual. no falls, but the bike steers a little different than my older bike and I was over steering or understeering and getting off course a little. nice sunny day. a lot of fun.

Judy this is a milder climate here, and earlier spring, and garden supplies are barely starting to show up. we were feeling like it was spring in January, but Feb brought us back to reality! Hope HD turns out to be a decent place to work. no one can tell my brother anything. I would never let my pets go without needed vaccines appropriate to the location. Heartworm in particular is awful, but fleas and ticks too. no idea if he keeps up rabies vaccines etc. I never had to get heartworm vaccines because not a problem here but diseases spread to new areas all the time. If you don't trust the advice your vet gives you, you need to find a different veterinarian.
Deb, Carolyn makes a good point about the playlist. I still need somethign to watch, even if its not great entertainment.

This morning I did Coffey Fit Raw Step #3, 44 minutes, met 8.3, 331 calories, 4,073 steps, heart rate average 143, max 169. I then did Cathe Lite Pyramid Upper, 45 minutes, met 6.0, 239 calories, heart rate average 97, max 139, 1,007 steps. I finished off with Lite Extended stretch #1, 14 minutes, met 3.5, 35 steps, 40 calories. I also did some foam rolling as I was almost cramping on my right hip thigh crease in the front doing the happy baby move. This happens some times. After rolling I went back and did the stretch again and it was not in a knot and hurting. I need to pay attention to that more. Total time today was 103 minutes, 610 calories, 5,115 steps.
Coffey Fit Raw Step 3 does 4 segments of step boxing, off the step drills, and a weight segment where Kelly uses 10# dumbbells.
weight segments:
side to side squat press I used 8# dbs and had on 1# gloves that I wore throughout the workout.
reverse lunge to upright row 10# dbs I did curls instead of upright row
plank row and curls 10# dbs
lunge with a push 1 dumbbell forward and bring back 10#
Pyramid upper body 12,10,8,10,12 reps for all moves using stability ball
Back super set pullover 10,12,15,12,10 # dbs standing single arm back fly 8,10,12,10,8 # dbs
Chest super set fly on ball 10, 12,15,12,10#dbs incline press on ball 10,12,15,12,10#dbs
Triceps super set standing kickbacks 8,10,12,10,10#dbs lying ext on ball 8,12,15,12,10#dbs
Biceps super set standing sweeper curls 10,15,17.5,15,12# dbs Incline curls on the ball
10,12,15,12,10# dbs

I spent the afternoon being tortured through an immensely busy Walmart after hitting the bank and post office. Why is it that they start moving things around and stocking shelves when they are really busy?!! I felt like I was standing in line on each aisle just to pick up what I needed to get. I left out some things because there was no way I was wandering back to an aisle I missed. I was ready to get out of there. They were out of carts in the end I went in and I had to walk to the other end of the store to get one.

Valerie, I have heard good reviews on Beautiful Boy and listened to an interview on the radio once when it was coming out. I have not seen it though. Cable choices are bad. Even with Directv now and Netflix, Amazon, we can sit here and not find anything to watch that we have not already seen. Not unless we want to pay for the movies and newer series. Fleas and ticks can be bad around here. We have a lake near by and stream running along behind the houses across the street. Even with the Frontline plus my other dog got tick born disease. Plus, I routinely spray the back yard during warm months. I have to keep the dog in till it has had time to do it's work and take care to wipe her feet after we go out for awhile.

Deb, I will keep Gertie up with the Heart Guard since she has been on that from the beginning, and never had a problem. I am just holding off on the Frontline. The bumps seem to have went away, but she has pale spots all over one side a a few on the other. I think where the skin flaked and some hair came out which is why it looks like that. My daughter looked at her and told me not to expect just the shampoo to work and to keep something on there every day. So I bought an antibacterial fungicide spray with aloe and soothing stuff in it. It seems to be helping. It makes me sad for her, she always has a glossy black coat and looks so pretty. If I get it cleared up I will check and see if they have something else to recommend. I have never used Advantix, but I thought they were pretty much the same. At least she is not seeming uncomfortable. At first she kept licking herself.

Judy, nice job on the workouts. I bet you are looking forward to getting to work. I guess it would be expected that you would work at least one day on the weekend. It would make it easier to take knowing that it is temproary. Our weather is staying bad much longer this month. It warmed up pretty well today, but a dusting of snow forecast tomorrow and maybe more next week. I think that I am ready for spring.

Carolyn, I used to watch television shows or movies when I used the treadmill. Later I started putting on music and reading. It was hard to read though when I was doing a fast run over 5 mph.. I have used the spin bike with Cathe Spin workouts on the computer and watched something on the television or previewed workouts. I find it kind of hard to workout hard and pay enough attention to a movie though.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Valerie, How nice that you got to ride on that trail before the race when it was I good shape! The seat on the bike is a black, very thin, very hard one. Excruciating pain when it was higher, now that is it lowered for me, minor pain. That's too bad about your brother's dog. I am still on the fence about the heartworm meds. My vet said yesterday, because of the low occurrence in our area, that it is ok to not give the meds, as long as you get the blood test every year.

Judy, not sure I saw this, but what is a Peloton ride? My cousin, who does the annual Ride for Roswell ( a large cancer institute here) does what they call a "Peloton" ride the day before the actual ride. I never asked her what that meant. If the garden center is not open, will you be just anywhere needed in the store? Do they assign certain employees to areas that they are trained in, or proficient at? I never tried to access Prime on the downstairs TV, but that is a good idea!

Carolyn, good job on Stacked Sets! thanks, I think I will try to see if I can get Prime through my streaming on the TV in the workout area.

Diane Sue, I feel for you with your Walmart experience. We went to Walmart last night to pick up a travel crate I ordered on line, the store was so busy, it was horrible! The only good thing was we only had to go into the pick up area, put the order number into a computer at a kiosk and wait for them to bring it out. It was already paid for so no waiting for that. Poor Gertie, I hope that new stuff helps.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

Deb-I'm using the Peloton app on my iPad. It's an app with indoor cycling workouts.
I don't have a Peloton bike, I am using my spin bike. We have a Peloton store at Somerset mall so I might try one out sometime just to see what it's like.
As far as I know, I would be working inside if the garden dept. isn't open due to weather.

Deb, look at amazon ( or elsewhere) to see if you can get an easy fix for the seat. there are loads of choices. some are replacement seats, but there are a lot of gel covers that fit over the existing seat that slip on and off easily. I used to have a gel one but it was too round. I used a sheepskin cover for a while too. I prefer harder narrow seats, but everyone is different. most people who ride a lot swap out different seats until they find a comfortable one. many have anatomical cut outs, male and female to reduce pressure points. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=seat+cushion+for+stationary+bike&hvadid=178138054935&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1027682&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=b&hvrand=3739209672261829162&hvtargid=aud-649564993678:kwd-272351793253&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_gln8wd0sp_b

sometimes "too many choices" are worse than no choice .... tee hee
we were just lucky we went to ride yesterday. the guy who was flagging the route said 300 people are expected to show up Saturday. I can't imagine how 300 people can be riding narrow trails all at once. must be nightmarish! they must stagger the start times or something. they are maybe 5 feet wide at the widest.

our internet signal gets blocked the way our house was built. can't get a decent signal where the TV has to go in our exercise room. Cable worked but don't want to go back to that .

you should be safe as long as your vet is on board. I'm trying to remember... is heartworm is mosquito borne? I'm thinking it doesn't get transmitted from dog to dog directly , but via an intermediate host like mosquitos. but the more animals in the area that get infected, the more likely it will spread. I need to look that up. it never used to be a problem in the northwest, but times change so I would follow my local vets advice. we never had much of a tick problem in the northwest, but its becoming gradually more common, unfortunately.

Diane sue, we agree on that. I can't stay focused enough on a movie to watch while exercising. shorter things, like cooking shows or interview shows are better.
