Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/18

Good morning,

Yesterday I did KCM's Strength & Stamina Wk #2. 36 minutes, 184 calories. I like this one a lot too. I will be looking at the premixes for these, especially the combined ones.

Judy, sorry about the vertigo. Maybe an inner ear infection? Great that you were able to get an appointment with an ENT. A rest week sounds like a good idea.

Diane Sue, I find the same thing...when I have cookies in the house, I just gravitate to them and don't even think of something healthier to eat. They may have those bars in a local heath food store. I am getting a $250 rewards card from my health care provider to use for various healthy purchases, and the store is on the approved list. I am not sure if they limit what you can buy. I need to look into it a little further. I never thought to dip a hard boiled egg in spicy mustard! That sounds way better than a plain egg.

Valerie, those are some really good snack ideas. I like string cheese with an apple. I used to take that, and a hard boiled egg to work with me every day. They satisfied me at work. Now being home is it much more difficult to control my cravings. I like Kind bars too, I keep forgetting to pick up some to use as snacks.

Carolyn, glad your nephew continues to do well. How do you add in more healthy fats so that you feel more full?

Lori, great workout. Completing a FS workout with both the cardio and weights is a good one. I can understand why you would not want to add a leg workout to that.

Class this morning, and I want to get to the hospital to see my friend. I am not sure how long she will be in there.

Take care,

This morning I did Fit Split Cardio Shred cardio timesaver, 29 minutes, heart rate average 141, max 168, 208 calories, met 6.5, 2,697 steps. I then did the Fit Split Low Impact Cardio, 27 minutes, heart rate average 127, max 162, 179 calories, met 6.0, 1,929 steps. I finished off with Kelly Coffey Body Design Yoga, 13 minutes, 37 calories. Total time 69 minutes, 424 calories. I have come to the conclusion that I do not find these cardio workouts fun. The time seemed to drag by. I should have done Kelly's Live Amped up cardio that I had in mind to do this morning. I just thought since I did weighted kickboxing yesterday, I should do something else. Originally I was going to just stop at the gliding discs on the low impact workout but ended up just pushing through it. Maybe it was just my mood, because I really wasn't feeling much of anything this morning. My husband stayed up all night doing paper work and I think it disrupted my sleep. I kept waking up wondering why he hadn't come to bed.

Deb, I did a both combined mix from Strength and Stamina and using the worksheet she moves from workout 1 to workout 2 and back to workout 1. I was confused when I did it and was writing the weights down. Now that I know this, there is not a problem though. That is great that you get a rewards card from your health care provider. It would be nice if you could get some good nutrition bars with it.

Today I did RWH Low Impact HiiT One which was 28 minutes and 196 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate 153. I then did Fit Split Push Day only for 35 minutes and 143 calories burned. Average heart rate with that was 109 and maximum heart rate 132.

Valerie, Cathe’s newsletter topic was very timely. I had to look back at my food choices for the past week to see what was lacking. My meals and snacks need protein, carbohydrates, and fats. I was heavy on carbs, including some added sugar, and low on fat.

Deb, I add fat with almonds or almond butter on apple or on a toast with banana for a snack and salad dressing that I make with olive oil or avocado oil. If I have oatmeal I add a few walnuts or a tablespoon of hemp seeds. Yesterday I added a tablespoon of unsweetened coconut which helped. I had the health rewards with my insurance until I switched to Medicare Advantage. Although it’s still United Healthcare, that is no longer available.

Judy, I hope you are feeling better today. Rest is good. I saw a couple of good Yin Yoga workouts on YouTube that someone recommended on another forum. One instructor was Brett Larkin and the other was Michelle Goldstein.

Diane Sue, I agree with you about the Fit Split cardio workouts. They are not fun. I tried the hard boiled egg with mustard for my snack today. It was very good and I will do it again. I plan to look for the Bulletproof bars when I go to Sprouts. I need to try one to see if I like it.

Hello to Lori. I hope everyone is having a good day.

Carolyn-Thank you for the yoga suggestions. I just looked up the YouTube channels and their Yin Yoga workouts look like they would be good for me.

It is cold. My car is a ball of ice after the freezing rain this morning. I had to go out with a hammer and screwdriver to chip ice off of the community mailboxes to get my box open.

Carolyn, nice cardio choice to go with the Push day :) I haven't looked at Cathe's newsletter yet. Maybe your Sprouts will have other flavors. Mine has short bread and brownie. As I said, I love the shortbread. I know they have lemon cookie and a mint chocolate one and a couple of others.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was cardio of choice so I did a LEKfit bounce for 38 mins / 318 cal. This was my only workout. Still catching up from being up really late with my girlfriends saturday night. :D

Funny how we are talking about being so hungry and Cathe has an article! Going to follow some of the suggestions. I was fine today and ate normally.

I previewed Strength and Stamina on youtube and it looks like a great workout. I also went on her site to check out her streaming and it looks pretty good. She is starting to have quite a few Raw workouts. I have no plans to subscribe. Was just curious to see what she has for content.

Judy...I had an inner ear infection that sent me spinning. I had no idea what was going on as I had no pain whatsoever. Went to the doctors and he saw what was going on. Was kind of scary. Hope whatever it is passes quickly.

Diane Sue...I like the FS boxing a lot and like my version of the low impact. I do not mind the mixed cardio but do not care for shred cardio at all and unlikely I will do it again. I may sub in one of her 30 min hiit workouts from I think cardio shock series if it comes up again in the rotation. It was beautiful here today. Almost 70 degress. Unheard of in New England! Tomorrow will be the same.

Carolyn...great workout!

Deb...hope your friend is having a good day.

Have a great night all!!

Lori, I was thinking afterward that I probably would have liked the Low Impact cardio if I had done your version. Still, all in all there are a lot better low impact workouts to choose from that she has done. I like the boxing one. That is the only cardio of these that I enjoy. I guess the thing is that I was disappointed because I was hoping for another low impact that I would love.
I think there are now 19 Raw workouts out and she has added some premixes which she plans on adding more of. Some of the ones that she has just added look like they would be good. I think number 20 is ready to come out which is boxing and Olympic lifting.

we went xc skiing today, an incredible workout. about 5 hours, 3 hours uphill. about 2 downhill. I used to do this stuff without breaking a sweat. no longer! we would but so hard to find places to go and good conditions. it was lovely today. more tomorrow.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I spent most of the day at the hospital. My friend is not doing well. Not sure what I will be doing for the next few days. I mentioned that my friend's SIL is going to Boston for a second opinion. His wife and my friend's other daughter are driving there with him. I may need to watch their 3 year old while my friends husband is at the hospital. Still working out the details.

Diane Sue, I saw the length of the combined Strength & Stamina workout, and figured she must just go them both as is, no changes. I guess going back and forth between the 2 is okay, but it makes it pretty long. I was thinking of doing the W/U which is separate, then doing the shorter premixes of each one, and the cool down of the second...if this makes sense. I agree, except for the boxing one, and Lori's version of the other one, the cardio on FS workouts are not ones that I look forward too either. I saw the Bullet Proof bars on Amazon...yikes are they serious about those prices? Looks like the RX bars are available all over, even 7-11 and Target. Are you signed up for KCM's channel? That would be one to test your DVD player on.

Carolyn, those are all good ideas for adding fats. I add a teaspoon of walnut oil to oatmeal and it makes is so creamy. I also add walnuts.

Lori, we are having warm weather here too....in the 60's yesterday and supposed to be today too. KCM's Raw workouts are great, and free. :)...( at least they were free in the beginning, I have not done one in a while).

Valerie, great workout!

Judy, I hope you are feeling better today. When is your appointment with the ENT?

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Deb-I do feel better today. My ENT is out of town this week so I couldn't get an appointment until next Tuesday.
I'm very sorry about your friend and her family. It's so good of you to be there for them at this time.
It was in the 60's here yesterday too.

Diane Sue-I noticed that KCM was doing an Olympic Lifting and boxing Raw workout. The Core one that she just put up looks good too.

Valerie-Wow! a 5 hour workout! That is awesome!

Lori-I also like the FS boxing a lot and your version of the low impact. I haven't tried the others yet. Subbing in one of the 30 minute HiiT workouts from shock cardio sounds good. I like those too. I think that I probably have an inner ear infection as my right ear had been bothering me a little before the vertigo. If it gets worse before next week I'll probably go to urgent care.

Carolyn-That was a good idea to do the RWH low impact cardio with FS Push Day. Great workout!

Judy

This morning I did Build and Burn Cardio Core for 27 minutes and 193 calories burned. Average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate 155. I followed that with WS3 1 Mile of Motivation for 15 minutes, 113 calories burned, average heart rate 133 and maximum heart rate 142.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

xc skiing is a workout. since we ski in an unpopulated area, we both carry 25 lb packs. extra gear to cover problems. you never know what conditions will be like. (we do not do the frantic uphills like you see in the Olympics!) this is a steady pace, uphill. road is not steep but continuous up and there are obstacles to go over and thru, like creeks with running water, downed trees, road wash outs. we always carry climbing skins. when the snow is loose and powdery or steep, not easy to go up without sliding backwards. skins keep skis from backsliding but they can get heavy and wet and aren't easy to pull on and off. they work best if it's all uphill, then we take them off, and back downhill. they also help if the downhill is icy. once wet, they are hard to stick back on the ski. we walked thru numerous creeks so the got pretty soggy and iced up. but it was nice snow, sunny in places, clear and lovely.
we took a lunch. when you stop in the cold, need a puffy jacket, warm gloves. you would WAY overheat with all that on while going up, so need to carry warm gear. lots of gear switchups along the way. we used to do this often, there is no better calorie burner. conditions are not always good, and we prefer to do it in quiet places, not groomed areas where there are people all around. groomed areas often have a set track. it is too widely spaced for me and makes my knees sore. we have lost a lot of the roads we used to use. taken over by snowmobiles or just not maintained and shut down limiting access. this particular road has been closed for years and is a bit over grown, but we and others keep it cleared enough to be usable. we saw a herd of elk just before we started skiing. lots of interesting animal tracks.

Carolyn I looked for the soup recipe. it's not on the Eating well website. I will type it up later. it's not hard to make , and one of my standbys because it's easy and uses things I always have. do you remember off hand how many WW points those bars are? I know Kind bars are 6 ( out of 23 daily) points so I only use them when I have several hour activity.
Interesting article in the paper today about diets, saying overall diet quality mattered more than low fat or low carb. that sounds like what WW tries to do.

In other news, my brother , who takes care of our mother, ended up in the hospital yesterday for unclear reasons. he has T2 diabetes for a longtime and does not do what he should despite repeated threats and warnings. really pigheaded about this. I put massive effort into educating him and warning him about the bad outcomes of not keeping good control. fell on deaf ears. I'm sure he has gotten the same info xxx times from doctors and nurses. he lost a toe a year or two ago, and now has another foot problem. he had said it was gout ( not good either but people don't usually get put in the hospital for it) this likely is something else.

I've never tried a hard boiled egg with mustard. my main problem is I don't like how they smell. I have some I made for Dh so will see if the mustard covers the hydrogen sulfide smell that I always get from hard boiled eggs.

Valerie, I bought some Kind Bars that were 5 points each and others were 6 points. I put in the nutrition information on the Bulletproof bars from their website and it came up 8 points. I’m not sure when I would eat them because of the high points unless I am out and getting too hungry. It’s funny but the WW meeting topic today was about recognizing and managing hunger. It’s goes along with Cathe’s newsletter article.

Today's workout was Kelly Coffey"s Amped Up Cardio Live workout 2, 29 minutes, 189 calories, 5.9 met, average heart rate 103, max 172, 2,366 steps, Body Shop workout #1, 41 minutes, heart rate average 103, max 137, 198 calories, met 4.4, 492 steps. I finished off with Build and BUrn Trim and Tone Intervals 24 minutes, heart rate average 130, max 162, 1,312 steps. Total time was 94 minutes, 517 calories.

I am planning on doing an upper day and a lower day mixing up Build and Burn and Fit Split Friday and Saturday. Tomorrow will be cardio, abs, and yoga.

Valerie, 5 hours is quite the workout. It really would add extra carrying all of the extra stuff with you. Yes, boiled eggs do stink. That is too bad that your brother will not follow what he should do. You would think after losing a toe that he would change his habits. People tend to get complacent when nothing is happening for awhile though. Being hospitalized does not sound good.

Deb, that is great that you are there for your friend and her family. My friend lost her son the other day and has headed out to Texas to be with her grand children and daughter in law. My heart breaks for her. She has now lost both of her sons and her husband. She does the grief share in the city that she lives in, helping others. I pay 2.97 each for the Bullet Proof collagen bars at Sprouts. When I saw the price for them on Amazon, I thought it was ridiculous. I only pickup one or two when I go to Sprouts. I kept thinking maybe I could make some collagen bars. Although the Bullet Proof has MCT oil and some other ingredients that I think would make it expensive to experiment and make some. I just figure they are a good snack once in awhile. I eat the RX bars more often. :) I understand on what you are saying on the Strength and Stamina. I thought you might like to know how the both was set up, because I spent quite some time studying the worksheets to find my place. I did not realize it wasn't the usual all one and then all the other with the addition of warm up and cool down. There is another workout mix that I did that skipped some portions at the end and I went back and did them anyway. I try to check out a lot of the pre-mixes and make notes. I still have not signed up for Kelly's Raw workouts yet. The one thing I don't care for with streaming workouts is, no work sheets to go back and check weights etc.. I know I will sign up eventually though. I have the moves written down for some of her Youtube workouts.

Judy, that is good that you are feeling better. I thought the KCM core workout looked good and I think I would like the boxing Olympic lifting. I liked the idea of the front side and back side workouts as well. I like the FS boxing workout and am thinking of doing a day with that one and Build and Burn kickbox and kettlebell.

Carolyn, nice work today. I really do like that workout. I am making the Whole 30 Fast and Easy Thai Chicken sweet potato noodle bowl tonight. I have the shredded chicken already cooked up and the cashews for the cashew cream soaking. I hope I like it. I made the orange chicken and it was rather bland. I did forget to put the green onion on it though. I like kind bars. I pick up some of the dark chocolate with coffee variety occasionally. I would think that they would have more unhealthy sugar though.

Diane Sue, I’m making the North African Chicken Skillet with Sweet Potato Noodles from that cookbook. We really liked that dish a lot! Amazon’s price is ridiculous for the Bulletproof bars. I just ordered some pure maple syrup and a couple of other items today. I thought the price for the syrup was too much, but I checked the company’s website and Amazon is actually a few cents cheaper. The robust (formerly grade B) cost more than the milder rich flavor.

Carolyn, I checked Sprouts and they only had the light grade a maple syrup. I need to try that recipe. I do that too and check brand prices. So I know I am not paying too much. I use ibotta and get rewards for some things through amazon which gives me back some money and helps.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was low impact and metabolic conditioning. I finished off with a quick lower target from SB. I did this target Sunday morning at the hotel and wow did I feel it in my lower glutes and hamstrings. It really surprised me.

Deb...I am so sorry about your friend. Very sad. It is wonderful you are there to comfort her. The Raw workouts are not free anymore. She did a few and posted on youtube but once she started with her subscription the new ones are posted there.

Valerie...wow 5 hours of xc skiing with 25lbs on your back amazes me. Nice! Hope your brother is better. I hear stories like this and I just keep saying “not me”. I am doing my best to avoid these complications and so far have done well.

Judy...hope your ear gets better and you do not have to go to urgent care. Fingers crossed.

Caroyln...nice workout. I am finding I miss doing the WS3 workouts.

Diane Sue...good combination of workouts today. I love kickboxing workouts and I bought the amped up live workout yet only have done it once! I need to remember I have it. I enjoyed it but once again I never grab my KCM workouts. Hoping the new series I have coming in March will not be like this! I had boiled eggs for breakfast this morning but could not have it with mustard that early!

Have a great night all!

Lori, I wish my brother was like you!! he is like the poster child for doing everything WRONG, while you do everything right. He is an awful patient! denial, denial, denial. he is overweight, eats fast food, loads of simple sugary carbs, won't use insulin, won't check his blood sugar and on and on. he's almost defiant in the face of the disease.

I got 75 WW activity points yesterday and I think that was an underestimate. Carolyn, thanks for the WW point #s. I would probably not want an 8 point snack. Kind bars are pretty rare. I keep them for long rides, hikes, or skis.

Lori, I really do enjoy Kelly's new workouts. That is why I keep pulling them out :) That is great that that target hit that well when it was short. It is rare for me to eat breakfast so eggs with mustard is not a problem :) I know you probably need to eat before you head out to work. When I went for jury duty I took a nutrition bar just to tide me over because I had no idea when they would let us go to lunch.
