Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/14

Happy Friday Ladies,

On Tuesday, my DH asked Karina to do yoga. I was surprised! Wednesday I ran, Thursday I did bodypump and today I ran. I also plan to run tomorrow and on Sunday I will be riding 40 miles. There is a new running club near my house and I'm going to try it out, they also run on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the evening which I will not join until the time changes in March.

Valerie, yesterday I went to the mall and was there for about 3.5 hours. I also needed a break from my DH :).

Deb, sorry that you are still not feeling good. I'm with you on the antibiotics, I try to avoid them as much as possible too.

Lori, hope that you get a good new CEO. To make a donation to the Aids lifecycle ride to to aidslifecyle.org and look for my name under donate. Did you read the description of the towns that we ride through?

Diane Sue, we are remodeling our master bathroom and have changed all the faucets including the 2nd bathroom. It seems that our group always has some issues with the same things breaking down :).

Garance, I love the color crimson and would love to have carpeting in that color in the living room. Our dinning room is crimson and one of the walls in our bedroom is the same color.

Judy, great workouts!

No plans for the weekend other than workouts.

Josie

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did the no equipment segment of Core Max then Medicine Ball Abs. Then I did 4 DS Chest & Back. I felt like doing a little more after that so I added 4 DS Shoulders & Calves.

Some time ago I submitted an application to REI. They called me today and invited me to a "group interview" Monday night, from 7-9. I've never done a group interview before, so this will be a learning experience. They are hiring part time & seasonal help. The manager told me that this position could have as few as 3 hours a week when they are slow and as many as 22 hours a week when they are busy. I'm going to go to the interview and see what happens. I wasn't expecting the call, so I won't be disappointed if nothing comes of it.

Deb-I don't blame you for not wanting to take antibiotics again. I hope you feel better soon. I agree with Lynda about the live workouts. They are easier because of the breaks and they do feel more real. The cycle workout yesterday might be an exception, as it was pretty much non stop and very intense.

Valerie-your outdoor workouts amaze me! You have so much endurance. Sometimes DH and I need a break from each other too.
I know what you mean about vacuums not lasting very long. If I can get 2 years out of one I am happy.

Josie-Great job on all the training you are doing! The new running club sounds like fun. I really miss running with a group.

No weekend plans here. It's unseasonably warm today, it's 60 right now but very windy. If it stays this warm but not as windy we might be able to get outside for a bike ride tomorrow.

Hi to Lori, Lynda & Diane Sue,

Judy

Deb, I never did P90X without extra cardio and I did add other lower body stuff because I was afraid that I wasn't getting enough lower. I got tired of the 91 minutes of Yoga so I had a stopping point during the near half hour of down dog up dog stuff and moved to I believe 36 minutes in and would do the balance and finish stuff. I have the time written down somewhere. Generally I did a cardio with the yoga day so that was just too long. Your dogs are lucky :) My book has you dry egg shells out in the sun and grind them in a coffee grinder for calcium.

Josie, I think owning a home comes with lots of repairs or remodeling jobs :)

Judy, good luck with the interview. We are having crazy weather here in Oklahoma City.

Valerie, I hope the repair goes well and you get the hot tub running.

Lynda, I belonged to a Firm Check in once before all of the forums and I would get around 300 emails dropped on me to go through in one day. It was tedious working my way through them. I have to be careful with my knees too. Particularly after the Torn meniscus. I still do some impact but I would not do it every day.

Back from lunch with my friend.. They probably wished we would leave the restaurant since we were there from 11:30-2:00 Really, it is a new restaurant on the edge of the city and there were only a few people there though.
Today I did a bit of warm up and stretching before I started the workout. I did Chisel Total Body followed by 15 minute glute chisel. I did a few modifications and used a bit heavier than Autumn for most of the exercises which is half or more what I would usually do. I even lowered the lower body to 20"s instead of 35-50's because I did not want to pick up that heavy of a weight load. When she did the step up curtsy thing on the bench I did not hold the weights at the shoulders , I held them at my side. We will see how I feel tomorrow if I get in the last workout of the rotation which is Hammer Power. I also did Tony's one on one Patience is a Hummingbird yoga. I had to forgo the arm balance on the left side. There was just no way. Total time was 89 minutes and calories was 361.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did Low Impact Sweat 2 with BB. At lunch was 21d barre legs. My legs are always tired after this leg workout. It is far from your typical barre workout. More squats and lunges. Probably to appeal to men as well.

Judy...the Super Soaker looked great. Wow amazing ride workout! Can't wait to hear how you like SB new DVD. As I mentioned I need ankle weights for the first leg section. I feel she does not do enough reps for me to feel the burn...however, the rest I love and makes up for it. :). I have never been a fan of salmon. I have tried but nope. Enjoy your Apple TV!

Diane Sue...hilarious that your spin bike can be used as a sling shot! I love my bike when I use it but do not use it enough. Funny you should mention about YogaX. My son and I did the same thing. We had a cutting point where we had enough and was fine with stopping. I do not remember where we stopped but it was a good 45 or so minutes into it.

Deb..I really enjoyed Chalene and thinking about doing a little rotation. I previewed the workouts and they look fun. Yes she is over the top but that is why I like her. Kind of like the Cher workout with Keli Roberts. Where she wore lingerie! But hey it was Cher! I completely umderstand why you want to stay away from antibiotics. What a horrible time you had before.

Valerie...shopping is a workout sometimes! I know what you meant when you need your space away from each other. It will be interesting to see how things go with my DH home for a while. His last day is Monday. Of course I am happy for him and looking forward to being with him more often...but I know I am going to need my space!!! I love my double workouts!

Lynda... The Live CUB and CLB is also a favorite of mine. I think the Live workouts at times are as tough as her DVD's but because of the little extra water breaks they make them more manageable. Yup you described them perfectly...very real. Love all the ladies in the live classes. They motivate me. I know all the regulars by name now! Debra from DVD's sister is a regular. I think her name is Diane. In one of the workouts Cathe points her out. I do not think they look anything alike! I'll find one with her in it and will describe her clothing and where she is standing so you can find her. In addition to Amanda, Al and Marlo are in a few.

Josie...great workouts as usual! I think it is great that your DH wanted to do some yoga. I think of Barre as my Yoga. :). Will look up the site this weekend. The next CEO can't possibly be worse.

Tomorrow I am having lunch with a group of coworkers. We are like family since we have worked together for years. One of my coworker's sister died a few years back. We all knew her very well too so it was hard. Tomorrow is her birthday and we get together every year for lunch/dinner to celebrate. We have done this now for 7 years.

Have a great weekend all!

I did x-train bi's & tri's, core 1. also therapy exercises and a 5 min warm up on the elliptical earlier. Did a Costco run. bunch of heavy cumbersome stuff... potting soil, one of those plastic chair mats, and it was windy and pouring rain when I came out. I got soaked. got my hair done, earlier. Great.

Guess I hit a common chord about needing some alone time from DH. We start getting on each others nerves if we are locked into close contact in stressful situations for too long. I always had "away time" and I still need it. I need some breathing room.
My crazy sister has been pestering me a lot lately. I feel sorry for her but she drives everyone crazy, and I'm no exception. She is a walking disaster area. nice, well meaning. but will drive you nuts. NUTS.
I like salmon a lot but DH absolutely hates it, especially the smell. if I make any for myself , I get nagged forever. pretty cheap here because it's so available, and good. wish DH would revisit it. I'm, not a huge seafood fan, no taste for most of it, but I do like salmon.

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

Boy are we having a melt down....all the snow is turning to flowing water...not good for anyone that has a leaky basement problem.

Valerie, now that I think about it, I bet my Hoover canister is over 50 years old. My mom died in 1974, and she had it for a while, so it's even older than I thought. I can't believe the motor has lasted this long. I hope you are able to fix that hot tub yourselves. Your outdoor workouts are unreal to me! How is the cold frame coming along? all set up? is that what the potting soil is for?

Lynda, I guess with all the rehearsals etc, the DVD exercise people would look perfect and the LIVE would be just like a class is....that's the selling point as well. I may go to Best Buy and try to get the cable hook up things then see if I can at least stream YouTube on the TV from my phone. There are grooming tutorials I would like to have up while I am grooming the dogs.

Josie, I am really surprised that your DH would want to do Yoga! Has he done it before? A running club sounds like fun. John started talking a little about how he would transition his practice....I am wondering what it would be like with him here all day...we would probably need scheduled breaks :).

Judy, that's a real interesting way to interview for hiring....strange, but interesting. You are going in with the right attitude. How are the vet tech classes going?

Diane Sue, wow, great workouts!. I feel like a slug when I read all of the great workouts everyone here does. I felt exactly like you described with P90X. I heard about the egg shells for calcium, I just use bone meal powder. It's a lot easier. :). My friend and I have a favorite restaurant that we go to all the time, we sometimes stay 3 or 4 hours. They are so used to us, we have the same waitress each time, just puts a full carafe of coffee on our table so she doesn't have to keep refilling our cups.

Lori, the Cher workout with Keli Roberts!!! What a blast from the past. I had that one....Cher with her black nightie or whatever it was....:). That is so nice that you get together with your co-workers, especially for the memorial to the one's sister.

Not much here, HouseMax and the awards dinner tomorrow night,

Take care,

diane sue, I'd worry about potential contamination of those eggshells. maybe if you hard boil the eggs first, then sun dry or dehydrator dry the shells? (maybe you do that already) the risk is very high for bacterial contamination, especially these days with chickens carrying all sorts of drug resistant strains of bacteria. consider for a moment how eggs are produced by chickens to begin with..... everything goes "out" the same orifice. so even if you know the chickens personally.... .

Deb, every year Costco has big bags of Miracle Gro planting mix. it works nicely for hanging pots and containers on the deck. no weed seeds or slugs, contains long acting fertilizer, and it has a lot of "fiber' so it's lighter than real dirt and keeps pots from getting waterlogged or dried out. the challenge is getting the bag into the shopping cart and then from there to the car. I'm short, carts are tall, and you don't want to rip the bag on the metal cart. so I stick it on the lower shelf. it was a downpour yesterday, I got soaked in less than 5 minutes. Plus I bought a plastic chair mat with the little spikes on the bottom and it was too big to get into the tailgate. had to flatten the back seat and the headrests had to come off first. an EPIC parking lot thrash!
Cold frame is done and outside for at least 2 weeks already. It's big so we make the pieces, take them outside and assemble it where we want it to stay. things are growing and blooming.. crocus, forsythia, heather, camellias, daffodils. Snow in the mountains yet but this is spring now.

I never saw any of these old workout people except pics of jane fonda in the leotard and leg warmers. I bought one "aerobics " VHS tape, looked at it once and threw it away..... completely impossible for me. some lady with BIG hair.

that is a seriously old vacuum. My mother used to have Hoover uprights but I don't think they used bags, all the dirt was loose and you shook it out, getting dirt all over everything you'd just cleaned.

Today I was going to try Power Hammer but did the warm up and first set of overhead press with only 8 pounds and I knew there was no way. I went ahead and did 10 minute abs hammer and 10 minute chisel abs, The Masters Cardio bonus dvd, and Piyo Strength dvd, Strong legs with the discs. 77 minutes, 345 calories.

It has taken me all day to get back here. I have spent a big share of the day trying to trouble shoot our internet connection and the reason we can't stream Netflix and Amazon along with anything else. We wanted to watch a movie on Vudu that we own and I had to download it to my computer and hook it up via HDMI to watch it because it kept buffering. It used to work just fine but, over the last month it started giving us problems. I get dropped off of the internet all of the time. The odd thing is a month ago they raised the rates 20 dollars. Then last week my husband called them and complained so they lowered it by 5 dollars. I checked the signal and compared it and it is the same as a month ago. I had wondered if they did something to it. We only have internet and they are big on offering bundle deals. I am not willing to pay 100 dollars for the fastest internet speed and according to their charts what we have should work for streaming one movie at a time. The roku is not working well either.
I would switch to AT&T but there top speed is 5 mbp less than what we have. Enough of that rant. It doesn't help that my shoulder and neck hurt again after yesterday's lighter workout. I may have to schedule just lower and cardio in next week. I don't think I am going to be ready for Hammer Power for awhile. It starts right out with overhead presses and when they get to the heavier weights you are doing cleans, presses and jerks. A lot on the shoulders.

Valerie, I thought I posted back to you from my tablet but I must not have sent it. I have not tried the egg shell powder idea. You are right, it is probably not safe. The funny thing is when my children were small I used egg shells ground up in smoothies that we all drank. I got that from Adelle Davis and feed your kids right. But, we had a dairy delivery service and I went to a small nutrition grocery for things like black strap molasses, peanut butter, flour etc.. I was pretty careful about what they ate and I gave them cod liver oil every day. They were never sick. It seemed weird to me later when I did daycare how sick all these children were all of the time with allergies and ear infections and stuff. I know now it was probably not safe even then. But, no problems. They do way too much stuff to food now days. Some of it I wouldn't even call food. Then they say on the news that most parmesan cheese is almost all cellulose. I knew that about a lot of high fiber breads and stuff. I used to always bake my own bread. I have always liked using the Miracle Grow. Every year I repot my roses and flowers. I have been trying to get lawn to grow in our little yard and after several tries with a fescue mix, I put out grub work stuff then poured Miracle grow potting mix and sme bags of peat out over the seed and I got more lawn than I had. My dog is not helping though and the soil washes down hill to the end of the yard.

Deb, I think Hoover makes pretty good products still. Most of the time. We purchased a Hoover vacuum and steam cleaner from Sams 20 years ago. I gave the vacuum to my daughter in law when we moved into the house we are in because I didn't have room to store two. The needed a vacuum. My dad passed away and I have his new Kirby. The only thing is that thing is heavy for dragging up the spiral staircase. I have a little cordless Hoover Linx that I loved to use at our last home. I kept it upstairs because it was great for the wood floors and using on the stairs. The roller quit turning on it for carpet. We also had purchased what I call the evil Hoover from Sears when we moved into our last house. It quit within a year. It was partly my fault but don't most uprights rollers stop turning when you put the setting on bare floor? Anyway, I was vacuuming cobwebs and the fabric shades when we first moved into the house and couldn't reach so I set the whole vacuum on the new leather (obviously bonded leather or something) sectional couch and the roller ripped the surface off. I was so upset I cried. At first I just put an afghan over it but finally we just set that piece of the sectional out on the curb and someone took it within a couple of hours.

Lori, I used to have that Keli Roberts and Cher workout. I don't know what happened to it but I liked it. At one time I was switching to dvds and I sold a whole bunch of VHS workouts on ebay and got 87 dollars out of them. I was pretty happy with that at the time. That is probably where that one went. I had two cutting points on P90X Yoga. One kept the balance stuff in and the other just went to the portion after the balances. It has been a long time since I have done a yoga that long. Once in awhile I will hit an hour with one.
