Pentagenarians & Beyond W/B 12/23

Hi Everyone,
I've been wanting to do Cathe's Athletic Training DVD for a while now so I tried it this morning. It was not the best choice for the day after Butts & Guts, but I did enjoy it and will do it again.

Deb-Those Live workouts sound so good! It is tempting to subscribe again. It was in the 50's here today and it felt so good!

Valerie-That is awful about the vomit at Walmart! REI and Costco get a lot of our money too. I love the REI dividends.

Diane Sue-I've used Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. It was the first brand I used when I started using whey, about 14 years ago. They sold it in 10 lb bags then and I would always get the Rocky Road or Vanilla flavor.

Carolyn- Thank you. I did end up challenging myself more than I expected to this week. I have never been much of a Walmart fan. It's been years since I've been in one.

Hi to Lori!

Have a great night!

Judy

Judy Carolyn was spot on... butts and Guts and Tabatacise... wow. tough work!

Judy I 've been an REI member since the early '70's. I have a really low membership number, 5 digits. back when it was a ramshackle wood building in downtown seattle, a total fire trap. they 've been out of there a long time now. I feel lucky to live where Costco, REI and Starbucks all came to be. been shopping all of them since they were single small stores.

Did rockem sock em today, with some concessions to the flying angels, jacks etc. some work arounds there.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Valerie, that is disgusting! I would never go back to that Walmart I would not blame you for never going back. Back in my "stepping" days, I used 2 risers. Then went down to 1, and now, I feel like I am going to trip on the step, so if there is any step moves at all, I go with just the top. Too bad about the ski trip.

Diane Sue, you sure have had a rough 2 weeks, hopefully the new year will start out good. That Christmas store sounds like fun. Nice that you could catch the after Christmas sales and get something you wanted. I found that when you have yucky protein powder, at least for me, I can taste it no matter how I try to disguise it.

Carolyn, same here on the risers, I like the step really high when used as a weight bench. At least 3 risers, or more. I have a lot of them since I have the High Step, and had already purchased extra risers. I also have the slanted risers, which truthfully were a waste of money. I never use them, just pull out the one at the foot of the step when doing incline work. I noticed that Cathe doesn't even use them anymore.

Judy, good job on Athletic Training, but I can see how that would be even tougher after doing Butts & Guts.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

My intent buying this step was take to montana for cardio. I have extra risers from an old high step. When I got a standard step, I got 2 risers that look like a regular but have an extra groove to slant them. They were cheap. I looked for the slanted risers when I bought the step, and this was the updated version. this will work like a weight bench there.... flat/slanted. I am finally using the step, bit by bit. both low impact step workouts will work for me now..... no point taking the step if I couldn’t do the workouts. mostly we hike or ride but there will be days when weather isn't good and an indoor workout will be in order.

that Walmart closed, they put a newer superstore across the highway but first impressions stick with you. I never went back to it or even the newer store. I don't like Walmart business practices so avoid the stores.
Judy you are absolutely kicking butt. Athletic training was a tough one too.

Once I get sensitized to an unpleasant taste I can detect it anywhere. a lot of your sense of taste is related to smell so maybe you can smell the powder? I am that way with tarragon and lavender. Ugh. I can smell the tiniest bit.

we have a possible repeat stormy day today so need to work out earlier in case we get another power out.

Lori where are you hiding?

This morning I did Coffey Fit Raw Kettlebell and Kickbox, 33 minutes, 215 calories, heart rate average 126, max 171, met 5.9, 1400 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Body Design Yoga segment, 13 minutes, 32 calories, heart rate 100 average, 131 max, 197 steps. I chose this raw workout because it is low impact and Kelly lists it as one for if you are low on energy. I used a 15# kettlebell which is what Kelly used and 2# dumbbells. Normally I use a 20# kettlebell. My resting heart rate has been higher since this respiratory thing. I guess all of the coughing would keep it elevated. Workout was 46 minutes and calories burned 268. 1597 steps total.

Judy, our weather has cooled down since the rains. Right now it is 25 here. I was cold all day yesterday. Athletic Training does hit the lower body quite a lot. The Optimum Nutrition tastes okay, I just usually avoid the sucralose. I think my favorite tasting protein powder was Gaspari Nutrition Dymatize Elite vanilla bean. My daughter wanted to increase protein intake and wanted one that tasted good, and she really liked that one.

Valerie, just taking the step back and forth shouldn't add much bulk to your travel stuff. Good for you getting used to it more and more. I think it can take a bit of time. I remember trying to use 2 risers like a lot of the instructors did when I got my first one and I knocked the platform off while catching my toe on it.

Deb, I had an unflavored grass fed whey recently that I finally finished off. It was a gradual process because it tasted like stale powdered milk. I found the best way to eat it was mixed into nut butter with some chocolate chips and honey. I am unsure of this Garden of Life though. It really tasted bad. I am trying to imagine it in something. Bone broth protein powder had to grow on me some. It mixes thicker in yogurt and has a distinct taste. I am okay with it though. I was surprised though when I read that some of these proteins like collagen, does not count as protein as it does not have the full spectrum of protein in it. I think I read that on a Bullet Proof collagen bag in small print. Anyway, collagen works for my joints. Whey helps the body with glutathione production. glutathione is something I have read about in some of my RA research.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix. I had planned to do Low Max until I looked at the January rotation that Cathe posted. Monday’s workout is Intensity, so I decided to save the step for that. My time today was short, 25 minutes and 187 calories burned. Average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 155.

Deb, I feel the same about the slanted risers—they were an unnecessary purchase. I prefer to remove the regular risers on one end as Cathe does.

Judy, Athletic Training is another good workout.

Valerie, that’s wonderful that you are getting used to the step. Taking your time and getting comfortable with it is smart.

Diane Sue, it’s understandable that your resting heart rate is higher with the respiratory infection. The medication probably contributes to that too. It takes time to get over it and the body to get back to normal. When I was school based and working with children I seemed to get bronchitis every winter. The coughing always lasted a while.

Lori, I hope you are doing well.

Yes, that is my plan. I have enough risers to leave some at both houses. step itself can go back and forth. I have another old "step" my in laws gave me. a cheap one. very small and hard to use for Cathe things since your feet barely fit. if you are off a little you can flip it and not adjustable. I have it there already but don't like using it. we aren't going to buy cardio equipment for there so the step was my plan for "back up".

I did a 35 min spin from pedal power, and biceps MM. might do triceps too.

Carolyn, nice choice since you will be doing Intensity Monday. I am fine without the slanted risers. I do like that the newer step which I think Valerie got has different grooves in the bottom that look like the step would hold better without slipping. I read that most people think the coughing should stop sooner and it generally lasts 18 days or longer. The respiratory system gets inflamed and it takes awhile to get better. I do wish it were better though, my ribs hurt from coughing so hard and the cough syrup they gave me and suggested I use at night does not work.

Valerie, my husband made me my first step out of wood. It was a heavy duty wood box with routed edges. He put rubber for grip on the platform. It worked fairly well, but was not the length of the club step that step company has. It sometimes was a bit hard to work around on step workouts. The Reebok step was shorter at the time so Step Reebok worked fine for me as did some of the workouts that used the shorter step company steps. I think Cathe uses the shorter step in her beginner step workout? I have it, but have not pulled it out in years. I think the workout came with the step. I am not positive though.

Funny I'd find this at Walmart! they still sell the big triangular risers too for $50+ , but these are is the size of a regular riser and you only need one. the groove along the right side lets you angle the top platform securely. a set of two cost very little when I bought them along with the step a couple years ago. looking at the web page is a real blast from the past. Kathy smith???

I never had interest in step because I'm such a klutz with footwork. I also don't want to spend a bunch on indoor equipment. this was about $100 total , and I already had mostly unused dvds. the step moves on these are as advanced as I ever hope to get. so a win-win. I think the small step I have is a
weider. it's small, the surface is hard plastic without anything for traction, and it flips easily.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Yin Yoga from Ultimate Yogi. I think I will do a spin workout today.

Valerie-That is really cool that you were an early REI member. Great job with the step workouts! I need to try to do them more next year. I have several of Cathe's that I need to work on.

Diane Sue-Wow, that's great that your husband built your first step. I found my full size step on Craig's List a few years ago for $25. I have the small step too. I bought it last year when I started doing Basic Step.

Carolyn-The January rotation looks good. I might do part of it while waiting for the new series to arrive.

Hi to Deb & Lori!
