Pentagenarians & Beyond W/B 12/23

Merry Christmas! Today was another rest day. My youngest daughter and grandson came over for dinner today. I am tired and was up half the night so will be headed to bed early. I am hoping to get a workout in in the morning. It has been a few days rest now. Still have symptoms I am dealing with and will be glad when I am done with the meds.

Deb, Ike is so cute. They both look like a couple of cuddly toys.

Judy, I have not had trouble with every Walgreens that I have had over the years. Just two of them. This one is the closest drugstore to my house but incredibly busy and a bad corner to get in and out of. I don't know why, but most CVS stores do not have many cars in their parking lots when I drive by them. I think their prices are somewhat higher than Walgreens on other purchases. I think SilverScript has some bonus program with discounts when buying health care items at CVS. I am not sure how that works with their CareMark service or something like that.

Carolyn, I just think it is the particular Walgreens store and not all of them. I feel out of sync when I cannot workout. Sometimes I get up and put on my workout clothes and come down stairs remembering that I am not working out today.

Valerie, I don't think CVS is the Pharmacy in Target stores here. They are just on street corners as a stand alone store. I do not generally shop at Target anymore.

This morning I did Coffey Fit Raw Ripped and Ride, 36 minutes, met 5.5, 218 calories, 1,148 steps, heart rate average 118, max 147. Kelly used 12.5 # dumbbells and 8# dumbbells. I used her weights. I probably was not pushing as hard as I normally would though. I thought I was going to die right at the start. I like how she did some triceps pumps on the handlebars while riding. I was huffing and puffing through this. I will be glad when things are back to normal. I have to go out and do errands today. I wish it was not raining.

Good Morning,
Today I did ICE Metabolic Total Body for 50 minutes and 334 calories burned. My average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate 167. This was a good workout for getting back into my routine. We had a wonderful Christmas Day with the girls and my Brother’s family.

CVS purchased the Target pharmacies a few years ago, but the name was just changed at my local Target last year. It was a surprise to see “CVS Pharmacy” inside the Target store.

Greetings to Everyone and have a great day.

the Target stores here have CVS as their in house pharmacy. Target is such a PITA to shop, I'd never use them as a pharmacy. there's a Target nearby but no matter what I look for there, they don't have it, or I don't like it.
we intended to xc ski yesterday. drove a considerable distance to the mountains very early, expecting fresh fluffy snow. blech! snow was awful! crusty, heavy and chewed to pieces from 4 wheelers. total surprise to us. forecast sounded better. when snow is this bad, it's dangerous to ski and definitely not worth the risk. we drove home without doing anything except watching for eagles on the way. I ended up taking the day off exercise. we both ended up with headaches for different reasons, so not a good day overall. our guests are coming here later today.
only bought each other small household things. a quiet day filled with Advil!

Diane sue after an URI, I always feel like death warmed over. that first workout usually feels way harder than it should. I usually take a longer break from cardio because the heavy breathing for me can reactivate sxs.

Carolyn, they may have changed the signs in Target here. I have not been in there for several years. It is always nice spending time with family.

Valerie, I am sorry that your plans did not go well. I hope the headaches are gone by now. Target never had a great selection of things that I wanted. They were just convenient and often not as bad as Walmart Super center. They had started getting some of the strangest people in there. Once I was in the store and it looked like this guy was trying clothes on with clothes on. My husband said I should have reported it as the guy was probably stealing clothes. The guy smelled bad and I had to get away. It was weird. Then the big woman that came in with rolls of fat in a bikini once. Everyone was trying to look the other way. It was rather shocking. She was just walking along shopping. We didn't really buy each other anything. We just got a dryer and new tires and figured that was enough. :) It is much more fun getting the children things and watching them open presents. I am sure the workout that I did would not have felt near so hard if my respiratory system was not off. My legs were burning and I was pouring sweat. At least the cycling parts were only around 4 to 5 minutes between the upper strength work which still seemed to have me working hard. I remember when I had pneumonia once and it took me quite awhile to build my endurance back up. The 36 minutes was plenty for me today.

Good morning,

Monday I did KCM's Start Here, the cardio workout. 33 minutes, 168 calories. It felt good, while doing it, but I did feel some twinges in my hip, even with modifying all the moves I thought would bother it. Yesterday was an hour at the PT session, plus the "stimulation" contraption, which I think helps a lot, at least for the rest of that day.

Diane Sue, I hope you feel better. Good job on the workout, but maybe too soon to do that much? Yikes! Those were really strange people at your Walmart.

Valerie, I am not sure if our Target stores have CVS as their pharmacies, I hardly ever go to Target. Funny both of you got headaches at the same time...maybe a barometric pressure thing?

Judy, after seeing the Live upper body workout for today, I am so tempted to sign up again, but know that I will have the new DVD's soon and want to concentrate on using those.

Hi to Carolyn, & Lori,

Take care,

Deb, I hope that the workout didn't bother too much and cause a set back. That was target that had the strange people. Walmart has strange people too, but I have not seen anything quite like that. An hour PT session seems long, at least it helps for awhile.

I did Coffey Fit Raw Step 2, 40 minutes, 260 calories, met 5.9, heart rate average 147, max 174, 3,550 steps. I will do strength tomorrow. This just looked like what I wanted to do :) I have to go back to the store and get protein powder. Somehow I got the organic protein powder from Garden of Life instead of the whey. It is dreadful. I thought when I had it in yogurt the other day it was really grainy. I couldn't taste it then and did not realize it was the wrong thing. Then yesterday I put it in my yogurt and ate most of it, but it was awful. I couldn't eat all of it. Later I started coughing and that stuff came back up. No way am I eating it again. I looked and it is grains and seeds, pea protein, flax, garbonzo beans. Not good. I cannot imagine anyone liking it.

Today I did Rock ‘m Sock ‘m for 48 minutes and 355 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 160. My daughters left last night and the house is quiet again. I’m working on getting rid of the not so healthy food that’s left and getting back to normal.

Deb, good job with gentle the cardio and PT session. I hope the twinges were just a momentary thing.

Diane Sue, nice work with Coffeyfit Raw Step. It’s a good idea not to push yourself too much.

Hello to Valerie, Judy, and Lori.

Hi Everyone,

Tuesday I did Tabatasize, 3 tabatas and 4 DS Biceps/Triceps. Yesterday was a rest day from workouts. Chris and I went for a walk and did some shopping. It was sunny and in the high 40's and it felt more like March or April than December. Today I did Butts & Guts. I will definitely be feeling that tomorrow and probably the next day.

Deb- I have been very tempted to sign up for Live again but I also want to focus on the new DVDs that are coming.

Diane Sue-I learned my lesson about Garden of Life powders when I worked at the health food store. Dreadful is a good description. Some might be better than others, but the varieties that I tried were just awful.
Great job with the workouts!

Carolyn-It sounds like you had a very nice Christmas. Great job getting some good workouts in too!

Valerie-I'm sorry about your headache. I hope you are feeling better today.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Deb, congrats on a workout done. the longer I put it off, the worse "dread" looms. it's never as bad as I think it will be. If I've been off for a while, I pick something easy, that gets me over the hump. I think in Montana there is a CVS inside an Albertsons store, so maybe there is a range of different placements.

yesterday I was starting a workout, surprise, our neighbors dropped over to exchange gifts. I jumped off the elliptical, jumped into jeans, spent an hour laughing and talking. we had other guests coming in another hour, but I went back to the elliptical and jammed in 30 min of fast work. it always says 300+ calories and 3500 steps but WW only gives me 7 fitness points for it. seems low compared to points I get for cycling. abdominal work is under valued too. whatever.... got it done! today will be easier timewise. I felt all noble and dedicated after that. ;)
don't want to sound like a snob, but Walmart here is awful. the video clips of "the people of Walmart" are too true. I don't like shopping to begin with. do none of those people own a mirror? No sense of propriety? Target is not much different.

diane sue I don't think you lose fitness so quickly that you can't take a few easy days to let your head sxs settle down. I like to keep moving but with head sxs, I avoid hard breathing. stick to weights or light cardio. used to get nasty sinus infections and learned the hard way. I used to start with tonsillitis and it morphed into 2 weeks of illness. I got my tonsils removed in my mid 20's. Tired of getting sick all the time! process was not fun.
Today did ICE low impact sweat , the whole thing with one riser and a couple moves slowed down to 0.8. one less riser helps a lot. I am nervous about missing a step, but not so much when step is a little lower. most of the moves are fine, a couple tricky for me. then did MM back and core 2 . got interrupted a few times, but kept going back at it.

Carolyn, all of the fun and excitement and then the quiet :) My daughter told me yesterday they were going to throw out some pies. I told her I freeze in individual pieces. She says, no, she will toss them. Her husband has to work to keep his cholesterol in check and she is afraid it is going to be up when he goes in this next time. So, the bad stuff is going to be out the door. I fully understand though.

Judy, Garden of Life has a whey protein now that tastes good. I am betting it is the only one that tastes good. I just cannot imagine them staying in business with stuff that tastes that bad. Maybe I am missing something? It was up in the 40's here today, but the wind was cold. It is weird winter weather. Ours doesn't generally get bad till January and February though. We have cedar and juniper pollen in the level 8 category and the wind does not help.

Valerie, I am not very good at being interrupted during a workout with guests. They would have been waiting a good 30 minutes for me to come out put together. Good for you getting right back at it. It seems like everything tends to give less credit for workouts that do not require lots of stepping movement and arm swings. Walmart can be bad too. Particularly if you go in there late at night. Almost scary. I got propositioned by some old guy once. At first he was talking about his deceased wife and I felt kind of sorry for him. I was looking for candy to decorate a cake for my daughter in law. Then he wanted to know if I know how to play. Let me tell you, I was out of there quick and did not go back for months. I also avoid aisles and friendly men after that one. The step workout today was one that Kelly describes as one for when you were not feeling pushing or going all out. It was just about right for me. I thought I might do half and then do weights, but as I progressed I just did the whole workout. I am not do the lengthy workouts I usually do. The Ripped and Ride yesterday was a bit too much though. Short, but more than I needed to start with. Tomorrow will probably be just some light weight work.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Diane Sue, Yes, the hour is long, they do 15 minutes of heat, then I do all my PT exercise, then they do 15 minutes of the STIMS machine with heat after. That protein powder sounds horrible. Ugh...

Carolyn, it's great having family, but I bet it is nice to have a quiet house again and get back to a normal routine.

Judy, Butts & Gutts is a tough one! Great job, :) It's supposed to be in the 50's here today, but with rain of course. I would really like to re-up for the Live workouts, just for this one alone, “Awesome Upper Body” LIVE!!...and Cathe Claus’s 2018 Calorie Crush Workout, where Cathe and the others are all dressed up in Christmas workout clothes. :)

Valerie, great that you did that elliptical workout even with 2 sets of company coming and going....LOL. Customer appearance aside ( Diane Sue's couple of examples of the Target ones were pretty extreme!), I find that the Walmarts are usually messy, with stuff strewn all over, and just chaotic. Not sure why that is, but it seems like the customers just don't care what the store looks like. Ever tried just using the top of the step with no risers? I don; think it makes much difference in what you get out of the workout, but it feels so much more stable.

Lori, hope you had a great holiday!

Take care,

My first trip to Walmart began with someone having vomited right at the entrance . Splattered all over! Nice!!! I had something I needed but you are both right, messy, crowded, junky and never found what I came for. When I left no one was cleaning up the doorway yet! I tried another one or two times but there are nicer places to shop that aren’t so dumpy. Never ever bought anything there. A lot like Kmart ....another one I don’t miss.

Deb, therapy sessions are intense but if it works it will be worth it. I'm happy with one riser, doesn’t seem much harder than none . Going to two made a big difference for me, feeling I would catch a toe and trip. I will stick with one until it gets too easy.

I had only turned on lights, TV when I heard the phone, and DH said the neighbors were on their way over. I keep the room very cold so even if I was working out, I don't get too sweaty with mangled hair etc. I can clean up quickly if needed.

We’re going to try to ski again today. Hopefully better this time. ETA we're back, did not get far as forecast changed and its raining already. not worth the drive.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey Sculpting RX, 2, 32 minutes, heart rate average 109, max 135, 1,086 steps, met 4.5, 159 calories. I wore 1.5# gloves and used 5# dumbbells. That is it for me. I will be glad when my respiratory system is back to normal. I have had a pretty lousy last 2 weeks of workouts and non workouts with all of this. I am just doing what I feel is okay for now. I will be back in awhile. I want to get a shower first.

This morning I did X Train Chest, Back, and Shoulders. My time was 60 minutes and 278 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 146.

Walmart is a place that I try to avoid. I have had bad experiences both in the store and in the parking lot. I haven’t been to one in 5 years. It’s just not a place for me.

Judy, Tabatacise and Butts and Guts! You were challenging yourself this week. Great job!

Diane Sue, you are being smart to keep your workouts short. Your body needs time to recover. I am like your daughter in that I will throw away the sweets, if necessary. I especially do it if it’s a food that I feel out of control with. I want to have one serving then I want it gone. Usually I freeze desserts in individual serving sizes.

Valerie, I wouldn’t be able to get back to a workout if I am interrupted by guests. Good for you. I use my step without risers during step workouts to keep my knees from hurting later. If the step is used more for strength training I will use 2 or 3 risers.

Hello to Deb and Lori.

It took awhile to get back here. My husband is off today and we went out to run errands and visited North Pole City which is huge Christmas store with all kinds of awesome things. They had a 40% off sale and we were wanting a Christmas star for our tree. We got one that lights up :) We went to lunch, then we went to my daughter's office since she was on her lunch between surgeries today. We were going to take her to lunch, but her time was a bit short since she had fit in a surgery for another doctor. Anyway, we had a bit of a visit with her :)

Deb, I wondered if I could slip in a bit of that yucky protein powder into some baked goods without it being noticeable. I hate wasting it since it is not cheap. I went out yesterday and bought some whey at Walmart. I ended up getting Optimum Nutrition. Unfortunately I did not know it has sucralose in :( I will use it anyway, but am not happy. Most protein powders I buy have stevia and some have some erythritol in them. I have to watch the sugar alcohols. I guess I wasn't thinking. It seems like all of that work at the PT would be beneficial. I am sorry that it is taking so long to reverse the problem.

Valerie, the larger Walmart I go to is generally kept up inside. They have workers that seem to be stationed in each area to pick up and keep things neat. The problem to me is that they stock all hours of the day. They clog aisle while doing it and most of their employees are rude when you need to get at something that they are blocking. I watched one of them go up to one of the refrigerators with drinks by the register next to where I was once, look around to see who was watching and grab a drink and take off. I thought, surely they see that on camera. They have to go to the front desk with any item that has one of the computer devices on them before they can check it out. That takes up time for the people waiting in line. That being said, there are some Walmarts around here that are known for police calls and things happening and they are also trashy. One of the ladies said they have made it hard, because the devices that remove those clothing devices and stuff have been stolen by staff, so they all pay for it by not being able to have one. Vomit in the doorway would leave me not wanting to go back again
If I am doing just a weight workout I may not be too bad off for guests. Still, in the mornings, my hair is usually not pleasant looking and flat. I used to use two risers on each side of the step for years. After knee surgery I have lowered to one. I use no risers when I am doing Ripped With Hiit Plyo with the step. I still end up modifying some. Leaping over a step is just not knee friendly and all that safe for me. I used to do it with one of the Shock Cardio workouts where Cathe had you jump over and turn. It has been a few years. Just not a good idea anymore. I hope the skiing goes well for you today.

Carolyn, I use all of my risers when I use the step as my weight bench. That is 5 on each side. I have had two steps over the years and also when I purchased a high step I got two more risers. So I have plenty. I need to replace my step again soon. The rubber has bumps and some cracks in it.

ski trip was a no go. we started out and decided raining too much already and bagged the idea.

I will have to spend a lot more time on the step before I feel OK with 2 risers. I've used more risers for strength workouts like Carolyn said, but for jumping on and off/ over and back, it's a little too high. I'm afraid I'll misjudge and crash.

I try to put my money where my mouth is as much as possible. I spend money at retailers that are known to treat employees well, and whose social policies I don't have an argument with. REI, Patagonia, Costco get a lot of my money. Walmart not so much. it can get complicated though, keeping track of corporate donations and spending and who is in my "OK " and "not OK" list . letting vomit sit in the doorway was a real nonstarter for getting my business. it can happen to any business, but it was quite a while and no one was cleaning it up. the local Walmart has a lot of trouble with homeless people cruising the parking lot and pestering customers too.
