Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/29

Today I did Michelle Dozois’ Pure Cardio from her Peak Fit Challenge program. Workout time was 51 minutes with 404 calories burned. My average heart rate was 137 and maximum heart rate 157. I really liked the cardio workout. Total Fitness Dvds has the program for half price and I decided to give it a try. I’m not sure if I will do it as a full program, but I think the individual workouts are worth the $40.00 price for 10 dvds.

Lori, I responded to your message a few minutes ago.

Does anyone else buy the Cathe calendar? I preordered mine last week. I love adding the stickers to my calendar as I complete my workouts. One more motivation tool!

I had a medical appointment this morning and another one this afternoon, so not much down time.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Good afternoon ladies,

Busy at work yesterday and was unable to post some Jumpsport so here they are. These are from the summer when we still had Zelda. I'll take some pictures of my workout area over the weekend. Three of these are the Jumpsport and one is my weight rack that I placed pillows and then placed the fit tower so it created a comfy shelf that TimTim loved during the summer. Cats are so funny!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did 4 DS Legs & Calves and a Fit Tower Legs, Glutes and Core Premix. Today I did Burn Sets Bi's & Tri's and Yoga Relax. I wasn't going to do yoga again today but I had enough time and decided to go ahead and do it. It felt really good. I am going a little deeper in the stretches now.

Deb-I'm sorry about your sleep :( I hope you can get some rest tonight.

Carolyn-I ordered the calendar too. I've never done a Michele Dozois workout, but it sounds good. I'll have to take a look at that program.

Lori- I love the photos! Yes, cats are so funny!

Diane Sue-I agree, balance work is so important. I've been trying to add more, using some of Jessica Smith's balance workouts. I have a balance board that I bought when I was doing physical therapy a couple of years ago. It's not that challenging and I don't really use it much. I probably should look at getting a bosu ball instead.

Hi to Valerie & Caitlin!

Judy

Today I did Kelly Coffey Total Body Kickbox Interval Challenge, 44 minutes, 282 calories, heart rate average 136, max 168, 3,833 steps. I liked this premix better than when I did the two workouts combined. I like that it alternates the weighted kickboxing with the kickboxing segments. I wore 1.5# gloves throughout and for the weighted segments I picked up 2#. I took my car to the service department again. I discussed all of the issues, what I read online, and how I manage to get it started. Also that one person that got theirs working said they had to redo wiring in the steering column. They gave me a ride home and put me on their list for a loner car since all of them are out at the moment.

Valerie, I cannot buy in bulk. I forget sometimes when I buy something in larger packaging and then I have no place to fit it. My cupboards are so small. They didn't put enough room between the shelves. Even where I have put the cereal boxes over the stove is small. They have to be put in on there sides and no way a large box fits. My husband hasn't eaten cereal in over a year now so it is just there for grandchildren. I had to throw some out. I try to cook them healthy breakfasts when they are here.
Our flooring downstairs is Pergo and we put carpeted stick on floor protectors for all of the furniture and some rubber things under a few. Just didn't want to crape it up right off. We did get a scratch when we moved the piano back into place. It is not something you just pick up. I used some Howard Feed and Wax with orange oil and beeswax and it polished it out where you can barely see it. When we do get rid of that carpet I will check the options. I get up and sleep on the sofa sleeper upstairs if I know I am keeping my husband up night after night and he has to get up and work. It is generally coughing from allergies or me moving around a lot. I don't do it often though.

Deb, I understand your being tired. When we don't sleep well most of the time and then add on worry and stress about something, or what all we have to do, it makes it worse. I am sure that your friend's health is probably a big worry. Yes, when we do it we will pull up the carpet. I doubt that will be real soon. We need to work on our sun room since it started leaking again :( Repairs all over the place. I need to concentrate on one thing at a time if possible.

Carolyn, I have heard many say how much they like Michelle Dozios workouts. You got a great calorie burn in today. I have not tried one though. I haven't purchased the Cathe calendar. I probably would enjoy the stickers. Kind of like my Lilly Pulitzer Agenda books that come with stickers :)

Lori, cute pictures. The Jump Sport makes a nice pet bed :) I looks sort of like a mini couch area.

Judy, I have done some stuff with the Bosu dome side down. Tracey Staehle had some moves doing that while holding weights on one of her earlier workouts. Although she balanced on top of a stability ball on her knees doing some upper work. I always had to have a toe on the floor. Those Fit Tower premixes are nice to add to other workouts. Good job with the yoga and being able to go a bit deeper.

I got the 'all clear" call from Dermatology this morning! Yay!! I did not expect bad news, but still, I don't know how long the spot was there. it is a barely visible spot. if it hadn't itched, I wouldn't have noticed it. I first noticed it in august or so, but it was so small it could have been there longer. regardless, the all clear feels good.

Carolyn I always get the Cathe calendar. I write in my workouts because I often do things not cathe related so writing it in is easier. It feels good to see those dates fill up.

Diane sue I also don't have a lot of cabinet space in my kitchen. I use garage and laundry room. we have tall wood shelves just inside the garage. I store bulk items on top shelves, canned goods lower down. saving money is great alone, but not having to buy paper towels, Kleenex, and tp regularly is worth it.
good luck with the dealer. you wonder how many people have the same problem.

Lori what a perfect kitty bed!. cats know how to be comfortable.

Good evening ladies,

Yesterday I was inspired by Judy and from also seeing Diane Sue’s Spin bike to hop on mine. Been ages since I have used it. Had my son bring it up and somehow I managed to fit this is my little room with my other stuff. I did 40 minutes of Power Max Live and boy I was a sweaty mess. Going to try and fit in more spinning. Thanks Judy and Diane Sue! Came home last night and did a Bellicon health bounce for 30 mins. Tonight it will be FT Bootcamp. I should have done this in the morning but I was not feeling a workout.

Caroyln...I have the Peak Fit set and love it. It has a lot of high impact. I have never done a rotation but have done the workouts here and there. I bet they would be fun on the rebounder. Hmmmm, I may revisit these soon! I like Michelle a lot. She has a great personality that motivates me. DVD is in the mail! I have been ordering Cathe calendars for about 5 or 6 years now.

Judy....nice workouts. Great you are seeing results from yoga. When do you get your Teeter? Hope you get great results like my husband. He swears by it. He was always throwing his back out and visiting the chiropracter. Can’t remember the last time he has done either of these. Of course the weight loss helps too.

Diane Sue...when is the KCM Box set released? Will you do a rotation? I love your workout space. My husband and I were talking about the basement and what to do when my son moves out. My company made it official yesterday and hired my son full time and he is really excited. A friend of his bought a house and he and him will be roomies. I think it would be a great for him to really be on his own. He will be still be living pretty close to me though which makes me happy :). Anyway, we have decided to create a movie theater since we have all the equipment and really enjoy it. The plan is to do this the week between Christmas and New Years. We both have this week off. We will be looking at furniture soon. Guess my workout space is permanetly gone!!

Valerie...that is great news!!! Awesome. I go for my annual screen in December. TimTim is hilarious where she likes to lay. We always find her in the strangest places!

Deb...glad you enjoyed the BBQ. Lack of sleeps really messes with me. One time, and not too long ago, I literally was falling asleep at work. I decided to lock my self up at lunch in a conference room that has a couch, set my alarm for 30mins and I took a nap and it was great. Everyone at work cracked up! I would never have been able to drive home if I didn’t get some sleep.

Have a great evening all!

Valerie-That's great news!

Diane Sue-Thanks! I really like Cathe's approach to yoga. Great job with the KCM workouts!

Lori-Great job with the spinning! The Teeter should be here Friday. I'm really looking forward to trying it out and seeing how it feels.

So at the car dealership there was batman wandering around talking in a gruff voice and I saw the joker. They seemed to be having fun with it.

Valerie, I have put things like that out in the garage on top of the freezer and refrigerator. I keep things like my bread machine and ice cream freezer on the shelving in the garage. There is no place for those in the house. TP I spread around the house in the bath cabinets so that is not too much of a problem. Canned goods and baking items are hard to find places for if I buy too much. Things can only be stacked so high. That is great news and always is a relief when the results come back with an all clear even when we don't expect anything.

Lori, I have pretty much had at least one room devoted to my fitness equipment since two of my children moved out. My youngest had her room and the other had a murphy cabinet bed for guests with my fitness equipment. As I acquired more though, one of our homes had to have two of the bedrooms for my stuff as they were not as big as I had before. So one had the dip station and Bowflex along with the Murphy bed and a television and dvd vcr. The other had the treadmill and the heavy bag stand. My last house had all of that in one large room. I got rid of a few things when we moved here. When my children were growing up I worked out in the living room. Things were kept in the coat closet and behind the couch for my workouts. Kelly Coffey says it generally has taken from 6 to 8 weeks from the time of filming. Since the pre-sale was the day after filming, the 10th, it has been 3 weeks now. She says things are moving along fairly quickly . Hopefully not too much longer :) I will look at the rotation she has and see if I want to do it that way. I probably will do it but add a little more to it. It will give me a plan for awhile :) I chose the kickbox today because it is not that much impact and I had done a lot with Shape Up yesterday. I wanted to be easier on my knees today. We had what we called the man cave/game room at our last home. We had a formal living room, but spent very little time in it. I used it for reading and naps :) The man cave/game room had movie posters and pictures of different athletes and actors my dh has met along with sports memorabilia. We had a 150 gallon aquarium there, a large screen television, two arcade game machines, an old jukebox and kareoke. That is where we hung out and where the family all gathered for holidays. It had brick flooring. I kind of miss all of that space, but we really don't need it for the two of us. That is great that your son has the job and will be living close by. I love having my family near us.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I need to get back into it, but am not really enthused about it at all. :( We had over 100 kids last night for treat or treating....in 2 hours. The dogs were going crazy, barking the whole time.

Valerie, Great news on the "all clear". :) I know how you feel about trying to find a product and find out they do not make it any longer. I just did that with bras! :). I did find something I like just as much, if not better after a lot of research on line. It if was only John that made me not able to stay asleep, that would be one thing, but the dogs are another. I wouldn't feel right leaving him alone with them so he would be the one having to get up etc. He has to work still, and I can always try to take a nap during the day.

Carolyn, I get the Cathe calendar every year. I don't use the stickers, but do write in all my workouts, with calories burned etc.

Lori, love the pics! Zelda looks so comfy in that! :) Nice that you got into the spin bike. Too bad about the workout area though...a movie theater sounds like a nice thing, especially that you enjoy watching them so much. Great about your son getting the full time job.

Judy, good workouts, That is great that you are able to go farther with the stretches in yoga.

Diane Sue, which DVD is that KCM on that you did yesterday with the boxing intervals? It doesn't sound familiar. Good that they are giving you a loaner....hopefully at no cost after all they have put you through. We store all the bulk purchases in the basement.

Taking my friend for a treatment today, then agility class tonight...

Take care,

This morning I did D 32 Plyo Legs. This disc kept freezing during the first 20 minutes but I just completed my reps based on the written sheets. It was okay for the second half. I have had this problem with a few of the discs even though I clean them carefully before using. My time today was 60 minutes and 280 calories burned. Average heart rate was 113 and maximum heart rate 154.

I have a folder of Cathe stickers that I printed from the website. I made stickers for other many workouts that I use like KCM, Chris Freytag, Yoga Foundations, and Spinning. I copied pictures from the dvd covers and pasted them to the label template. I love the visuals! I use a notebook for my workout data.

Lori, Michelle Dozois does use a lot of high impact moves but they are easy to modify. She has a modifier in Rockin Body Cardio Jam and I use similar modifications if I need to. With Pure Cardio you can maintain the intensity without the impact.

I use part of our three (doesn’t hold three!) car garage for my cardio equipment, dumbbells, and other large pieces. I do most workouts in the family room.

I have a meeting this morning then meeting 4 friends for lunch. It’s been 2 years since I last saw them and I am looking forward to our get together.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Deb, when they are so many worrisome things I tend to not be enthused about working out. Sometimes though if I push myself just a little it helps with everything though. It sounds like you have a full day today again. I hope that you can get some sleep. Mine was getting better, but the last couple of days have not been good. That Kelly workout is the one I just purchased. Oddly, I had missed it when it came out. Maybe because it was the year we were in the process of moving and looking for a house. Here is the link : http://www.coffeyfit.com/istore/product_info.php?products_id=124 I was looking through my workouts and realized that there were two kickboxing workouts. I had an older one. This one has a kickboxing 30 minute workout and one that uses light weights up to 5# that is a bit slower paced.

Carolyn, enjoy your time with your friends today, it sounds like a lot of fun catching up. I love the idea of making your own stickers to use for other workouts. That had crossed my mind when looking at the Cathe calendar.

Here are pictures of my workout space as it is right now. I do not mind losing my downstairs space permanently. I have adjusted to my little space just fine. I actually like working out upstairs now and have everything I need (other than my heavy bag and I plan to delegate one corner of the basement to this). The only 2 things I have to set up and put away when I use them is my fit tower and step bench. And these only take a minute. Yesterday, when I did FT Bootcamp I did not even use the tower. I used the bar on my Jumpsport. This room is a little family room we have off the kitchen which really is my room. Lol! :) My husband has his beautiful office and I took over this space. When we entertain no one really comes in here. I use it in the morning when everyone is sleeping and same over the weekend. The kids will watch TV but pretty much that is it. I thought about updating it (as this is the only room we have not touched) but the thought of this project exhausts me! Some day but not anytime soon!

Good morning. things are rough here this morning as DH is trying to get health insurance. it is not going well. this is the first morning the exchange is open and the choices, if you could call them that, are beyond pathetic and expensive. it is clearly the intentional fault of the current administration. if you are not insured thru your employer because you are retired, but not old enough for Medicare ... things are not good now nor will they improve. I hope none of you are in this same situation. can't imagine going without insurance. I will not go into a political rant. there is no reason we can't have affordable health insurance except every effort gets short circuited by people who seem not to understand how important it is. we are not deadbeats. paying $12,000 a year out of pocket with a $7500 deductible and coverage for almost nothing is just plain wrong.

Deb, I am not able to sleep during the day so naps are not an option for me. I can't sleep beyond 6 am. sleep deprivation really wears on you so I hope you can find something that works. so different..we got no trick or treaters at all. so poor DH will need to eat the snickers bars by himself.

Carolyn we have a 3 car garage too. we keep our truck "in" during fall/winter. mice chewed on wiring, ate the bottom out of the huge windshield washer container. we noticed it was empty, tried filling the container, and all the liquid poured onto the ground. this was not a tiny hole, they ate the plastic bottom. it cost a lot to get it fixed, not accessible. I have seen several news reports, and even a Consumer Reports article on plastics containing soy these days, and mice think it's food. One year we brought mice into the garage inside the truck engine. what a mess! so now I never store food in the garage and use shelves for wrapped paper products, cans, bottles. Mice also ate holes in a plastic bottle of Alaska fish fertilizer and the hard plastic bottom of our outdoor compost bucket. not sure if all these products used soy but this is new for us. we are in a suburban area and not bothered by rodents usually.

Ordered my calendar this morning.

Lori that looks like a comfortable work out space. Yep, spinning makes you sweat! its one reason we keep our workout room cold.
I will try again to take some pictures of our room and see if I can get them to post.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Split Sessions starting with Workout #2 lower body and bonus , 55 minutes, 243 calories, heart rate 101 average, 141 max, 1,609 steps. I then did Split sessions upper, 41 minutes, 181 calories, heart rate 102, max 135, 486 steps. Total time 96 minutes, 424 calories. This should have been a lot shorter time wise. I kept stopping for texts, logging, and helping my husband with something.

Lori, that looks like a cozy comfy room. My downstairs is pretty much open space except the bedroom and baths. I guess even when you look up at the loft room which makes it even more open. I am not real pleased with the openness. DH likes it though so he can talk to me while I am in the kitchen. You have your weight rack and jump sport so what more could you need :) I could see the bar on the jumps sport working to replace some of the FT workouts.

Valerie, I had no problem setting up my medicare and supplement. It saved me money. The work insurance would have cost me even more than what I was paying last year. We were using an HMO till last year and paying out over 1200 a month for it. It did handle the deductables pretty well, but was terrible about authorizing stuff. Anyway, so far I haven't used my new insurance. It costs me less than before and the supplement will cover the difference other than the 183 dollar deductable on medicare per year. My husband is the one that is still stuck with the high co pays and deductable. We switched to the blue cross PPO and it is like what you are talking about with that huge deductable. He still has a couple of years before medicare. It is going up in January. I hope that you can get it worked out. Costs have gotten ridiculous and it started before this administration. That is crazy about the mice. I had no idea that they were using soy in the plastics.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was a bellicon dance workout about 35 mins and tonight was supposed to be Travel Fit but I subbed in the Live Band and Bodyweight workout, 59 mins. I like this one alot, more than her travel dvd.

My little room is really cozy and this is the word everyone uses to describe it. (At least it was before all the exercise equipment!) I guess that is why it never bothered to rip down the dark panel. You can’t see but my TV is actually sitting on my grandmothers singer sewing machine. The machine is tucked in and the case is a beautiful mahagony cabinet. With it tucked in you cannot see the machine but you can see the wheel. I have my display of Vermont teddy bears tucked in the bottom peeking out. She received this as her 16th bday gift in 1915 and it is in near perfect condition.

Diane Sue...that is one of the reasons why I like working out in the room. In the evening while working out I can still converse with my husband. I don’t feel like I get home then run off to workout for an hour. He likes it better too. He actually will be trying out the spin bike tomorrow. Now that he enjoys biking he is interested. Great workout even though it took longer than expected!

Valerie...I am finding the temperature is going to be a problem. The basement is always cool. We have a separate heat zone downstairs and I always keep at 60 degrees in the winter when I was working out. It is Nov 1 and I am a little warm upstairs. I am going to keep the heat low on this side of the house and bring in a fan. Hoping this works. I hope the insurance worked out for your husband. As of today my son is off our plan. He turned 26 in October so he had no choice but to come off. Now that he is working full time he will be paying for his health insurance. He is in for a rude awakening once he realizes the cost of health insurance.

Carolyn...well that is frustrating having the disc freeze. Good the 2nd half went smoothly. How many workouts in STS? You can’t be far off from completion. I have never used the stickers I can see it being a fun thing to do. I have noticed Michelle has a modifier and I do believe I followed her a couple of times!

Deb...you have had a tough year. Completely, understandable about not feeling a workout. You’ll get back when you feel it. How is your friend? Is she able to start radiation?

Diane Sue, Judy and Carolyn...I think you all have used SB and not sure if only Judy or all three of you have use her streaming (you all know I love it! :) ). Well she will be introducing her new streaming website soon and pricing is increasing. The new site sounds pretty extensive. All current members will be grandfathered in at the current rate that she is calling Legacy Rate. And as long as you renew each year before it expires you will be grandfathered in. You can also do the auto renew montly. This is a great deal. Currently, I pay $79 annually and it is increasing to $129 annually. Just thought I should mention in case you have not seen this and may be interested.

Have a great night all!

Lori, I love the keepsakes like your grandmother's Singer machine. Those things have a lot of meaning and lend a warm feeling :) I got an email from SB. It is nice that your husband can talk to you while you are working out. That is great that he is going to be using the spin bike. He can do that while you use your Jump Sport.

I did 15 on the treadmill with hand weights as a warm up, and then Ramped upper body. that one is tough! didn't remember to try pictures again.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did All Out Low Impact HiiT and Burn Sets Chest & Back.

Deb-It's understandable that you don't feel like working out. You are going through so much with your friend. It's good for you to take a break.

Carolyn-Great job with Plyo Legs! That is a tough workout. I'm sorry about the disc freezing. I've had a few do that too.

Diane Sue-I've had workouts like that too, where I end up texting with my husband and dealing with distractions and the workout ends up being a lot longer.

Valerie-I'm sorry about the insurance. I hope you can find something better. That is way too much to have to pay.

Lori-your workout space looks so nice and comfortable! That is so cool that you have your grandmother's sewing machine! I saw the email from SB about her new site too. I'm going to have to think about that. It would be nice to get the grandfathered rate.

Have a good night,

Judy

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I took my friend to her treatment.

Carolyn, too bad about the DVD freezing. Like Diane Sue mentioned, could it be the player? Very clever of you to figure out how to print other workout stickers! That sounds like a nice lunch.

Diane Sue, now I know that I do not have that KCM workout....I stopped buying any of her Kickbox workouts as I was not really enjoying kickbox for a while. It is still not my favorite cardio. I like some of Cathe's but not even all of hers. Any word on the car situation?

Lori, Nice workout area...Cozy is a great word to describe it . Assume the TV and other stuff will be moved to the basement theater? you will then have a lot of room. Yes, my friend has started radiation. She had her 2nd treatment yesterday. She is doing 5 treatments a week, for 3 weeks.

Valerie, How long before you DH will be on Medicare? the health care exchanges have been horrible since the onset of that program...There have basically been no changes and that is what is needed badly. I have 4 months of next year before going on Medicare. I am just lucky that my company has some choices for retirees, although they are not cheap! I never heard that mice eat plastic! Good to know.

Judy, I have not done All Out Low Impact in a while. I do remember liking it. :).

Take care,

I havevread the times on Cathes new workouts and was a bit disappointed in how short the low impact workout was. I hope the premixes have something longer.

Deb, bless you for being there through your friends treatment. No, nothing on my car or the loaner yet. I have grandchildren staying with us for a few dats starting in a week. I will need transportation to get the 6 year old to and from school. My daughter called and offered a vehicle. Theirs are both big. My Spark is tiny. It would take some adjusting to. My son in law has a work take home car. I am hoping the dealership comes through. I love kickboxing, but prefer a lot of kicking in them rather than standing in one place doing boxing moves. It can make my arm joints and shoulders hurt at times. I try to alternate types of cardio work. I think Kellys train like a contender and step boxing workouts are a lot more enjoyable than the two just kickbox ones. I am not such a fan of Cathes Ice kickbox either. Ite seems more geared to upper work except for the blast. But both Cathes and Kellys have premix options that gear to more lower work.
