Good morning,

Agility class yesterday....

Carolyn, yes, its funny how you stick with the same salon for year. It is tough to switch, even if you want to. Your results from STS are pretty impressive!

Diane Sue, I hope the dealership has some answers for you!

Judy, that's great that you ordered an inversion table. I have never tried one, but heard they can be very good for back issues.

Hi to Lori & Valerie,

We have our annual members appreciation BBQ at the dog club later today...also with a dog Halloween costume contest...:).

Take care,

what I do with the incision is ...rinse it twice a day with warm water. using the hand held shower. the location makes it easier than putting my leg on the sink. blot dry. I use the hair dryer to make sure it's dry. cover with thick Vaseline and then a non absorbent dressing, paper tape to hold in place. at night I put a stretchy bandage on it so I don't rub the dressing off. paper tape doesn't stick very well on me and edges roll up so the Kerlex keeps me from rubbing it off. I do that for two weeks then the stitches come out.

I haven't done a whole lot yet except walk around. home and stores. plenty of up/down stairs but nothing difficult. doing a workout this morning. think I will warm up on the treadmill with hand weights, then do the upper part of High reps and the abs something I've done recently.
Judy ( and everyone else) Costco is a great place to buy if they have what you want. they stand behind everything, never any arguing if something is returned. I am heading there this afternoon for new tires. easy to shop while they get the job done. I buy our phones there too.

diane sue I doubt the dealer will do much after 3 years... except maybe get it fixed but it looks like they are not able to do whatever is needed. or they just don't know. the car still has decent trade in value, low mileage and not that old. maybe you should cut your losses and trade it in on another car. that car dealership can inherit the problem. It's too unsettling to always worry about whether it will start or not. sometimes I think electronics are evolving so quickly new things get added before full implications are figured out. some dealers and mechanics are faster on the learning curve than others.
Carolyn congrats on all the advances with STS. I liked it and agree, it pushes you to do more than you think you can.

Today is a rest day. I just did some leaf clean up and a bit of work outside. It ended up being in the low 70's today and is beautiful outside. Gertie wanted me to toss the ball for awhile. :)

Deb, our neighborhood association usually has a dog halloween costume contest and a parade of the dogs. I have never went though. They meet at one of the pool cabanas. I usually see the winner posted on the website. :)

Valerie, it sounds pretty much like what I did when I had surgery, right down to blow drying. I don't think that there is a Costco around here. It seems I heard some talk about putting one in. It is pretty much only Sams for that type of store. The thing is, I like my car. I am sure it is electrical. Today I took it to Sprouts (it has never not started in my driveway) it did not start right away again. It was totally blank other than a static sound then a whining kind of alarm sound coming from the speakers?? I did what has worked this time and turned it off, took out the key then reinserted and turned it to just on not trying to start, I then put in the purchases and put up the cart. When I came back and opened the car door the keys in the ignition and door open lights went on and it started. I told my husband, if it wouldn't start, maybe if I left it overnight someone would steal it LOL Of course I was joking. If they would just fix the problem I would be happy. We will see...... I may have to cut my losses eventually.

Today was a rest day for me. It is cold and windy here today. It really feels like a January day. I’m sure it will change before the end of the week.

Valerie, I like purchasing from Costco too. The only thing is you need to buy items when you find them there. They change merchandise often and sometimes things don’t return. We bought our treadmill there 8 years ago and it has served us well. It’s a very nice treadmill. STS has definitely pushed me to go further with weights and I am glad that I decided to do it. I have used my weighted gloves and ankle/wrist weights when I needed a weight between the sizes that I have. It’s working well.

Judy, have you used an inversion table before? I have often wondered how it feels when I see them pictured. I looked at the one on Costco.com and it seems like a good one.

Diane Sue, it sounds like the technicians don’t know how to fix the problem. You might have to get another car sooner than you had planned.

Hello to everyone.

Good evening ladies,

Yesterday was a few bellicon strength workouts and SB arms and abs from her bounce dvd. Total time was about an hour. We went for a 6 mile bike ride in the afternoon then I walked GiGi for 2.5 miles. I was tired at the end of the day. We fortunately was having a quite night. It was a beautiful night so we lit a fire, enjoyed some music and wine. A very relaxing evening. Today I did FT boot camp and this was my only workout.

Judy...I am loving JS on the rebounder! It has opened up a ton of rebounding workouts for me. The most I use for ankle weights is 1.5# and 1# hand weights. I was using 2# hand weights a while ago but 1# is best for me. This is all you need. We bought a Teeter inversion table about 4 years ago. My husband uses it regularly and he loves it. I used to use it after a weight workout but it has been a while.

Diane Sue...step kickboxing sounds like a fun workout. Yes if you can post a picture of your tower used as bar for rebounder. I had posted one last year but no longer have it. We did leaf clean up yesterday. Will need to do it a few more times though before the winter.

Valerie...no Costco near me. I have to drive an hour for one. I frequent BJ’s and there are 2 that are very close to me. 2 weeks will be here before you know it and those stitches will be out.

Deb...that is so sad about your friend. Hope it clears up soon so she can start the radiation. I’ll post my jumpsport tomorrow when I sign into my laptop at work some pictures I took in the Summer when we still had Zelda. The cats love it! Yesterday I wanted to use the larger one but TimTim was sound asleep and I did not want to disturb her so I used the smaller. Things we do for our pets!

Hi to Carolyn and Caitlin!

I actually got Gertie on camera without her running off. I think she was waiting for a cookie since it looked like I was working out :)

Carolyn, the last two days felt like winter here. Today is warm and beautiful.

Lori, that Kelly workout has always been a favorite of mine. That one was before her 30 minutes to Fitness. I think some of it is a bit more choreographed and the step starts out end to the television then mid workout it turns back to the usual position. I used to like the abs core at the end, but no matter how I try to do it my knees hurt. I don't usually have them hurt when I kneel. They kneel one knee on a half foam roll. I have tried various things and it just hurts. This time I had rolled a mat up and tried kneeling on it. It was better , but still uncomfortable. I think the bobbing and punching could be done while standing instead. I may try it next time.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a 45 minute Spinerval and Yoga Max. It felt good to do the yoga 2 days in a row. My back has been acting up a little and that helped.

Deb-The BBQ and the dog Halloween Costume Contest sounds like so much fun!

Valerie-We love Costco for so many things! Their products are high quality. I use a lot of Kirkland brand products. We also have a Sam's membership. I had one in Iowa and kept it when I moved here. We really like Sam's club optical, and a few products that Sam's carries that Costco doesn't.

Diane Sue-It was in the 40's here today. It seems like we went right from summer to winter. I think we might see some snow next week :(

Carolyn-I haven't used an inversion table before. I've been reading about it and will start conservatively, 20-25 degrees for awhile, then increase the angle gradually.

Lori-Teeter is the brand that we are getting also. I think that Chris may start using it too.

Hi to Caitlin!

Judy, keeping up with the yoga really does help. It is just difficult to fit it in all of the time. Particularly since I have shortened my workouts a lot. I do not care for snow myself. I am always happy when we have a mild winter here. It varies from year to year.

Judy, thanks. I was looking at the picture thinking the heavy bag stand looked crooked. It is probably just the camera angle.

why did I think Gertie would look completely different that she does? she is beautiful and your gym looks great. ours is similar except for hard floor.
I didn't do as much as I planned but did 100 knee push ups in 5 sets of 20 and the HR ab workout. it felt fine. I was unsure of knee push ups, being on my knee.... but totally fine. DH will hike tomorrow and I will do a workout I'd planned for today. we did a lot of walking today so not a couch potato day at all.

Costco started here , the first store was 40 miles from here. "Kirkland" was a suburb part of the metropolitan Seattle/Bellevue area and that is where the products got their "brand" name. I've been a member for a long time. I buy more now than ever. the product selection has changed a lot over the years and I find more now that works for us. I am usually pleased with the quality but the selection is not always huge. if they have what you want, the price will be good. I refuse to shop at Walmart or connected stores. there are 5-6 costcos within 30 miles for me. we bought winter snow tires and had them mounted today . their tire shops are very nice, good choices. gasoline is the least expensive. what can I say.. I am a pretty loyal customer.

Deb, hope they sort out the skin issue for your friend. she sure is not catching a break .

Good morning,

The BBQ dinner at the club was nice. Lots of leftovers for people to take home.

Valerie, it sounds like your care for the incision is not complicated/easy to keep up. We have something similar to Costco here that we buy a lot of electronics at too...we got our Panasonic phones there and are really happy with them. They were a great price too.

Diane Sue, Nice pictures! Your workout room is great! I hope they find what is wrong with the car. With all the computers and electrical stuff in them now, it can be a mystery. Oh for the good old days with old fashioned cars that mechanics could work on without having to use a computer!

Lori, nice workouts and a great relaxing day! We have B.J.'s here too, no Costco. LOL on changing your workout not to disturb the cat. :).

Judy, the inversion table sounds interesting....I looked at that option when I had my back issues, but a ruptured disk is not something that the table would have helped. We had 40's and cold yesterday too, and more today. Winds up to 55 mph. :(.

Puppy class this morning....

Take care,

DH went hiking this morning but I am taking the day at home. There is snow and ice now. too risky . I said I would not sit around for two weeks, and I’m not, but slipping and falling is too high risk. So a regular machine workout.
The hardest thing to find was telfa “non stick” dressing. Pads came with a small adhesive strip down two side. easy to stick on yourself. they used latex.
and apparently all latex has been removed from otc products, a surprise. I went to three pharmacies before I realized they don’t exist anymore. Pads are not called telfa anymore and the pads are plain so you need to put tape on yourself

DH thinks he found some at Amazon but not here yet. We had old telfa ones from a few years ago. much easier to use and not all the irritation I’m getting from paper tape I knew latex allergy existed but did not think it was common enough to remove it from everything.

Today was D 31 Chest and Back. My workout time was 1 hour 15 minutes and 270 calories burned. Average heart rate was 106 and maximum heart rate 128. After that I did Jessica Smith’s Yoga Flow for Chest and Back from the Gentle Yoga dvd for 22 minutes. That was a nice follow up to today’s workout.

I ordered the Jumpsport 350 from Costco.com this morning. Today was the first day for the sale price. I think this is a good choice since I don’t know how I will like it. I’m sure that my grandchildren will love it when they are here! I have been using my Bosu lately to practice standing and moving on an unstable surface.

Diane Sue, thanks for posting the photos of your workout room. That is the set up I plan to use instead of attaching the bar to my Jumpsport.

Lori, I would love to have the Suzanne Bowen bounce dvd that you offered. I’m not sure how I would send you my contact information, so I will need help with that :).

Valerie, I’m sure that it’s hard for you to take it easy since you are usually so active. You’ll be back to normal in no time. I love Costco and I was very upset when they converted our local warehouse to a business center. I am still able to get many items there but I miss what I called “the Costco Experience”. There are other locations in the metro area that I occasionally go to, but I no longer make a weekly visit.

Judy, it’s great that you are doing yoga frequently. I have heard several reports recently that say yoga is better for back pain than pain medication for many people.

Waving hello to Deb. Enjoy your day everyone.

Today I used Kelly Coffey's Shape Up using two of the mixes as I wanted to do the cardio which is high impact and targets lower body separate from the weights which is all upper body. I started with the cardio only mix, 34 minutes, tabata rounds of 20 work 10 rest,8 rounds each exercise, heart rate 132 average, 171 max, 263 calories, 2,391 steps. I then did the weights only mix which took a bit longer since I wrote everything down,(I need to make a worksheet for this. Kelly said she would look into it , but it has not appeared on her website yet. I imagine because it is more of a cardio and weight workout if done as it is. I like the weights alone most of the time. This workout was 38 minutes, heart rate averag3 102/ max 134 (I skipped the warm up) 168 calories, 615 steps.
The weights are done in 8 rounds each exercise 20 sec work, 10 sec rest
Back-split stance row single arm and dbl arm fly 15# dumbbells 8 rounds
shoulders- double arm press rnd 1 alternating press rnd 2 repeat for 8 rounds (option to run the arms) 10# dumbbells 12 reps
chest and tirceps heavy flys into skullcrusher rnd 1 singles, rnd 2 doubles repeat for 8 rounds 15's 6 reps singles 3 reps doubles
back- rows 15's 12 reps round 1 15's run row round 2 repeat for 8 rounds
shoulders and trices- lateral raise to kickbacks 8's ( did 1 round with 10's) both moves count as 1 rep 6 reps total each round
chest/ core - bench press 15's rnd 1 bench press with scissor legs 15's rnd 2 for 8 rounds 12 reps each

Valerie, thanks. Gertie reminds me of a wet seal when she sprawls out on the floor, as she is so long and her coat is glossy. I think I want to put rubber flooring in my gym. We have not finished upstairs yet. I think we will run into some problems when we pull the carpet as there is a place there where it feels like there is a piece of wood that leaves a ridge around it and gives with a rattle when you walk on it. I try to workout away from the area. It is about a 4 foot area. Since the room is upstairs I was not sure about wood flooring. It is over the garage so nose is probably not a problem. The other though was all of my equipment scratching up the wood flooring. At my other home I had my puzzle mats covering most of the room and leaving a space for gliding discs on the carpet underneath. I have the stack of puzzle mats in the corner of the room because for some reason this carpet makes them slide all over. Even if I put weights and equipment on the mats, they move and bunch up. I finally gave up on using them.
I think as long as you are not putting pressure on the incision knee push ups would be fine. I used to get the Telfa pads at Walgreens. Later I used the plain ones and sensitive skin tape. I remember them putting adhesive bandages on me after a surgery and my doctor was angry with them because it blistered my skin.

Deb, thanks, I like my workout room. I have shelving on one of the other walls and the television on the opposite wall with more shelving, and a hanging rack for all of my bands and tubing so it is handy. The barbecue dinner sounds nice. Enjoy puppy class today :)

Carolyn, I love to get in some balance work. I think it is excellent for us as we get older to be able to help avoid falls and mishaps. It is good for everyone. I bet you like the Jump Sport. I haven't pulled out my BOSU for awhile. The yoga sounds like a nice addition.

Carolyn one of the costcos near here converted to a business center. then they built another warehouse store near by anyway. probably because they originated here, we have quite a few stores. I'm not sure there are any Sams or BJ's.
I have a list of products I get regularly. there's a Costco 5 miles away. it changed the way I shop and cook, since if you buy especially produce, you get a whole lot of one thing at once. I neve thought it would work for two people but it does. I especially like paper products, foil, parchment paper, soap in bulk so I have to buy maybe 2x a year. Many things are a fraction of the price they are at a standard grocery store but you need some space for storage.
Please report back on the trampoline. I probably don't need one but I am interested anyway. Lori this is mostly YOUR fault!

diane sue we put down wood look laminate in our gym 20+ years ago. we started with industrial carpet but on a concrete floor, it started to get stinky. it is a very dry daylight basement, but something didn't "breathe" right. we ripped it out after a couple years. laminate looks nice and is flexible enough, and easy to keep clean. I have rubber mats under some things so never had an echo problem.
As planned I did 15 on treadmill, 15 elliptical, then upper body and abs from High reps. I made it a moderate workout but zero discomfort. it will be hard to behave myself for another 10 days. incision looks a lot better today.

Deb, the wound care is simple. I got the telfa pads today from amazon. they don't have adhesive strips like the old ones . my skin is getting sore from pulling the tape on and off. I guess latex was a bigger issue than I ever realized.

Good morning,

Puppy class yesterday. No workout. I am so tired in the morning from lack of sleep that just going to puppy class is exhausting.

Valerie, I didn't realize that they had changed bandages to that degree.

Carolyn, great that you ordered the JumpSport! I bet you will have a tough time keeping your grandchildren off of it. :).

Diane Sue, I can see how puzzle mats would not work well if the carpet has a thick ply. So you are pulling up the existing carpet? Like Valerie mentioned, laminate flooring sounds like a good option. We have it in our back hall, and down the stairs to the basement, and I really like it because it is so easy to clean.

Valerie, we do the same with B.J.'s...have a list of products we buy there for the bulk price, but you are right, you need the room to store them, especially the paper products.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Deb these are “dressings” ....like a 4x4 but with a smooth surface, so shreds or threads don’t get caught on stitches. I guess that’s what “ telfa” meant previously. The pads used to have a strip of light adhesive along two edges. you could stick them in place and then add tape around the edges . The newer versions don’t have the sticky side strips so they are harder to put in place, especially if you are doing it to yourself. It’s not that big a deal but I spent a lot of energy looking for something that isn’t made anymore.

We did the laminate floor ourselves. a million choices. “Luxury vinyl “ is nice too and is a “do it yourself “ project if you have the tools and time. It goes down in squares or rectangles with or without a grout line. Especially in a gym area, a hard surface is nice for cleaning and moving things around. vacuum or damp mop. It’s hard and pretty smooth but not unforgiving like concrete.

Deb that is unfortunate with the sleep issue. DH and I don’t sleep in the same room a lot of the time. I’m too restless, wake up a lot. both of us sleep better separately. it doesn’t have to be a hostile choice.! When he was on call alot ... phone ringing and conversations all night... I’d sleep in the guest room. Then menopause. I gradually spent more nights in the guest room. It is worth a try if possible for you. As I got older, I became more restless at night. I keep us both awake. No sleep is awful and causes all kinds of other problems. Now, if I can't go back to sleep I read a little and it doesn't disturb DH. I think you get into a pattern where you 'expect" you won't be able to sleep. and then ,surprise, you don't. If you change things up a little, maybe there won't be the expectation.
