Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/22

We hiked yesterday 6 hours RT a tough one but a lovely sunny day and a few inches of fresh snow making it messy and slippery but lovely fall color A stiff climb up and down. Someone’s little dog decided to leave with us. the owner had to climb down a half a mile to retrieve “tucker” who would not come to us but scampered downhill ahead of us He would have been lost for sure!

Diane Sue maybe you should pack up a tent and a backpack , a cook stove, set up in the service mgrs office and refuse to leave until they fix your car . Time to get ornery!

Sometimes I think fit people develop their leg muscles and hip flexors and they get tighter and that doesn’t allow hips to open outward as much. I am extremely flexible except that one area. it is not age rrelated either because I remember sitting cross legged as a kid and my knees being high, so maybe it is a structural thing. It’s a reason why barre is so hard too. hips so not want to open outward.

Lori glad to hear the shot helped. cortisone is a wonder drug. Judy strong work on the step.

Deb good you were there to provide support .....that terrible last ride to the vet is a little better with someone else along. Everyone can use another shoulder to lean on ! Computerized is fine.... until it isn’t! too bad there isn’t human back up for when the menu doesn't fit what you need. Seems like changing number would be a really common problem with so many cc's getting hacked, and if they don't let you fix it, they don't get paid.
I need to get my skin lesion dealt with this morning. it healed over and is hard to even find so I will be very surprised if they tell me I can't exercise for 2 weeks. I suppose I could be surprised but I am thinking of drawing a circle around it so they know where to look. good luck with enforcing that "no exercise" idea anyway. I need a day or two off after the hike, can do upper body for a day but I think that is about all I will be sitting still for. I am a good compliant person usually .

This morning I did Kelly's Strength and Stamina bonus step, 22 minutes, 170 calories, heart rate average 148, max 174, 2,306 steps. I then did Kelly's Body Shop, chest, glutes, abs mix to get in some of the stuff I missed from the split mix. It did repeat a couple of moves. 26 minutes, 115 calories, heart rate average 87, max 131, 166 steps. Total time 48 minutes, 285 calories.
Body Shop Mix
plies 2 sets 10 reps 15's
suitcase dead lift single leg 15's 10 reps 2 sets
staggered push ups 5 reps right 5 reps left 3 sets 4th set hold and rock side to side
butt blaster 10# dumbbells behind knees 2 sets 8 reps then 3rd set 8 reps and 8 pulses
pull overs to flies 10 reps each with knee ins between sets ending in the 3rd set of pull overs and flys 15's
weighted bridge 15's 3 sets 10 reps 3rd set adding 8 pulses after the 10 reps

Deb, I really do hate those automated phone calls. They never have the right button for what I want to discuss or the computer doesn't understand and has a different agenda which ends in frustration. I have to deal with my husbands key today. I am not sure if they will have to keep the key longer. I am going to call before my daughter takes me over there. I may be watching my grandson today as he is not feeling well. It depends on what the doctor says. I hate taking him out if he is sick.

Valerie, I have to spend extra time stretching the hip flexors. It really makes a difference. LOL it is tempting to camp out there. I drove straight there and no one came out of the service department to greet me. I shut the card down figuring I got it that far they could deal with it. Then when I went in no one acknowledged me and I had to stand there and listen to the girl at the standing desk chatter with some other woman. When the woman walked off I had to get the girls attention because she went right back to looking at her desk. I dread calling them and dealing with it today.

Today I did D29 Plyo Legs skipping the last 4 exercises because I was running out of time. My time was 47 minutes, 241 calories burned, 116 average heart rate and 142 maximum heart rate.

I completed my healthcare benefits enrollment for the upcoming year. Writing it here was the motivation I needed to get it done.

Deb, I had just turned 65 when I retired and needed to make decisions about my benefits. The only healthcare option available for retirees over 65 was a Medicare Advantage plan from United Healthcare and I have been pleased with it. Last year they added another insurer, but I have not changed since this one is working for me.

Lori and Diane Sue, do you use the Fit Tower with your rebounder or do you have a bar attached?

Diane Sue, I hope that the key issue is resolved for you. I’m sure that was a very frustrating experience!

Hello to Valerie and Judy. Have a good day everyone.

I am back and not doing anything for 2 days. I agreed to that. then I will exercise some... carefully. the incision is way bigger than I expected.. it is on the side of my thigh a few inches above the knee. they take extra tissue to make sure they get it all. today I could barely see where the biopsy was. they make a horizontal incision because it heals better. shaped a bit like a football. there are dissolving stitches under the surface and a line of reg stitches across the top. out in 2 weeks. I need to be careful not to tear out the inside stitches. I see the biggest risk in forgetting momentarily .... and squatting down suddenly to get something out of a cabinet. I will be able to do upper body work, treadmill walking, and I think elliptical although I will need to test gingerly after a few days to see if it stresses the area. maybe road biking, but will try the spin bike again to see if it stresses the area. they want to prevent a lot of bleeding, swelling and extra fluid accumulation so heart rate should not be up and not a lot of vigorous moving for 2 days. there is no discomfort at all so far and I was able to do my Costco shopping and pick up some pain meds should I need them. I thought I'd be hurting by now, but not so far.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did FT Legs and Glutes (no core) I then did a bellicon booty blast. The botty blast was a short workout and was pretty much barre moves working your glutes on the bellicon. Really felt it though. Total time was 42mins./211 cal. This was my only workout. I was tired tonight so no second workout. Today I started the FT 30 day rotation. I never finished because I started p90x with my son. Surprisingly, I liked the rotation even though there are only 3 workouts. Doing my cardio of choice mixed it up for me. I will finish up right when I am going on vacation to Florida to visit the inlaws. My husband’s son will be joining us and I have mentioned before he is a personal trainer and owns his own business. So I need to be in shape! Lol! Love getting training tips from him.

Looks like everyone is doing Yoga or KCM workout!

Valerie...I like the WW app a lot. I am into my 2nd week. I have not been following it faithfully but it does make me aware of what I am eating. Great hike yesterday. Glad you are feeling good after your procedure and yes no working out!! I know it is so hard not to want to do something. Do you need to go back to make sure they get it all.

Carolyn...wow d29 already! Good for you. My larger rebounder which is a Jumpsport has the bar and it stays on all the time. My smaller trampoline (bellicon) does not have the bar. When I first bought my larger JS I used the fit tower with some weights to anchor and it worked fine. Are you planning on getting one? I will give you SB’s Bounce DVD since I have 2 of them. When I had my JS issues they sent it to me.

Judy...I am not flexible at all other than I can touch my palms to the floor even when wearing heels. No way would my knees touch while sitting cross legged. I am always in awe when I see SB or another do this!

Deb...I do not remember Body Fusion either. Going to need to look this one up. Since losing my workout room when my son moved back I have been using my step as my bench. I think I have 5 or 6 risers on each side (funny I can’t remember) which makes it perfect to use for me.

Have a great night all!

I just saw a Costco Xmas pamphlet that featured exercise equipment... a jumpsport for $250 I think. Also a treadmill, spin bike , and elliptical piece that were more expensive Sometimes they have promotions on things not in the warehouses. usually their prices are incredible good enough to join just to get that price. I tossed in the recycle bin but I will take another look.

Lori the piece of tissue they cut out ........edges will be checked to make sure they are clean . inner stitches will dissolve by themselves. outer stitches come out in two weeks. They take 4 mm around the edges of the incision to be sure but still checked by pathology . That is standard procedure so hopeful that is enough. Discomfort is minimal so it will be hard to sit still but I will be good for two and a half days and then venture into some light exercise to see if it feels ok

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I took my friend to her chemo treatment. I will be going to her appointment with a radiologist at 8 this morning so most likely no workout today either.

Valerie, glad all went well with the procedure yesterday. It sounds like they have very specific instructions for you to follow. As for the hike, shouldn't a dog be on a leash where you were hiking? or did he get loose somehow?

Diane Sue, hope you got some satisfaction with the dealership yesterday.

Carolyn, I can imagine how that weight is lifted once the enrollment is completed.

Lori, great workouts! I bet Bob's son will be pretty impressed with your workouts. :). Are you going to see Madeline this month?

Take care,

Deb it was a tiny little rat sized dog probably six pounds . the couple got to the top to sit down while we were packing up to leave. We didn’t know they had a dog until he appeared downhill from us, running and stopping and running again. Yes he should have been on a leash! We stopped and then the dog stopped but the woman had to climb back down to collect him. DH was going to grab him when he was close but he snapped at him ..so much for that! Dog did not come when she called him etc. we saw them later back near the car and he was walking behind but still not leashed.

The first two days need to keep heart rate low and leg elevated to prevent bleeding and swelling. I am sure I can exercise lightly after the first few days. Upper body is fine. Walking uphill on treadmill or elliptical will be fine by weekend. kick boxing or mountain biking, no, not for a while. Road biking I’m not sure either. Mostly avoid sudden abrupt movement. She gave an example of playing soccer!! Well no, doesn’t sound like a good idea! Exercise means different things to everyone. I won't sit still for 2 weeks but I won't do stupid things either.

Deb hope your friend had better luck with radiology. You are very kind to go with her as support. Good friends are hard to find.

Carolyn I use United as my Medicare supplement too. Overall happy with them. They make a lot of pesty automated phone calls for things like flu shots that continue long after you have done whatever is required. I don't answer them anymore. I must have gotten 10 calls just for flu shot that I always get early on. otherwise I am happy with the coverage.

Lori don’t get into a fitness contest with Bob's son and proceed to kick his butt! he will never live it down.

My workout today was Michelle Dozois’ Rockin Body Cardio Jam for 51 minutes. Total calories burned was 390, average heart rate 134 and maximum heart rate 149. It was a really good cardio workout that is easy to modify to low impact if needed. She has one person doing low impact moves.

Lori, I am still trying to decide about the Jumpsport. I have measured my space several times and I could make it work without the support bar. Unfortunately I think we need the bar. I want my husband to be able to use it as well and he definitely needs the support. I haven’t mentioned it before, but he has Parkinsonism, which means some similarities to Parkinson’s but not the actual diagnosis. Exercise is a very important element of his treatment program so I am always looking for things that he might do. He works with a trainer twice a week, plays golf frequently and uses the treadmill. The rebounder would be something he could do for a few minutes.

Valerie, I just missed the sale that Costco had on the Jumpsport 550. It ended on the 22nd. But the prices are still good there because they include some items that have an additional cost. I get many calls from United Healthcare and I ignore them too. Our plan includes “house calls” where someone will come to your home for a basic exam. I am not interested in that at all so I never answer when they call. I think they are required to call quarterly.

Hello Everyone and have a great day.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey's Cardio Pump workout # 1 Cardio boxing, 31 minutes, 205 calories, heart rate average 137, max 177, 205 calories, 2, 835 steps. I will be back to read the posts and respond. I have my grandson here and I need to hit the grocery store. Since my husband started a low carb diet I am having to be creative with meals and snacks to avoid failure and boredom.

Hi Everyone,

Tuesday I took a rest day, yesterday I did KCM Cardio Pump 2-Pyramid Weight Training and Jessica Smith Standing Abs. Today I did Jessica Smith Walk On- HIIT and Toning Walks and Bonus Chair Stretch.

Deb-I hope the doctor visit goes well for your friend. I will have to do some KCM Step workouts too.

Valerie-I'm glad your procedure went well. I'm sure you will be able to find some good upper body workouts to do while your leg is healing.

Diane Sue-I really like KCM's Cardio Pump 2. This is going to be another favorite of mine. Great job on the weights! I'm not able to do the shoulder presses with 20 lbs yet.

Lori-Great workouts! You will be in awesome shape when you go to Florida!

Hi to Carolyn & Caitlin!

Judy

The Costco holiday gift guide is what I looked at. it has prices good oct 30 thru nov19. the jumpsport is a 350i trampoline 39" frame and handlebar. it says $249 delivered after $50 off. it is an online offer only it says. I am assuming you need to be a Costco member to take advantage of these deals. might be state sales tax etc depending on where you live.
also a Life fitness IC5 indoor bike. looks like a very nice spin bike to me. 2 Proform treadmills, and a proform elliptical.

got mt hair done this morning, did some shopping but taking it easy for the day. DH rode the regular trail and I missed that I couldn't. I have done a fair amount of walking, not cardio level, but enough so I don't feel like a slug. it is more sore than yesterday but still not a level that requires any pain meds. I take the dressing off tomorrow and will decide if there is any bleeding or swelling, but don't think so. I would like to aim for doing something on sunday, like walking on the treadmill and some upper body weights.

I went to Sprouts and my car wouldn't start when I came out!! I do not understand why it never did that at the dealership that whole two weeks they kept it there. Right now I am not happy. I was going to go to run a couple of other errands right quick, but after I got it started I went home. It would do nothing again. Something I read on others complaints forums with the same thing happening said to turn the key on try to start, then just turn it on, not all of the way, and wait about 10 minutes for the system to catch it. I did that, and got out to get a protein car out of the back. They seat belt and door ajar signals went off and then it started. So they key thing they did didn't fix the problem.

Carolyn, I have used the Fit Tower with the rebounder like Lori and explained that she did. Most of the rebounder workouts that I do do not call for a bar. Last time I used SB I did most of the strength work off the rebounder using the Fit Tower. I think that if you want the support the Fit Tower works well for that with the rebounder. I store my rebounder on it's side between my spin bike and a stack of 2 foot puzzle mats. It does have folding legs , but I don't bother. I noticed that the Bellicon has the option of folding legs.

Valerie, it is always better for them to take a bit more when they do the surgery rather than miss something and have to do it again. I am sure being an active person that forgetting and doing something that you shouldn't could easily happen. I am not good about sitting around and letting someone else do things for me.

Lori, I am sure that you will enjoy sharing the love of fitness with your husband's sun. I am sure that you are probably in great shape already without trying to improve before the trip.

Deb, I hope your friend is not too ill after the chemo. Nice you are there.

Judy, I had Kelly's Pump workout and wanted to go over it. I know someone else that just chose this one to order for the pyramids and I wanted to go back and jog my memory on it because I was thinking it was a lot of reps. I like the format since it is a bit different. I used to go a bit heavier on shoulders, but 20# is pretty much where I stay as a max right now.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was three segments of JS quick 10min dvd I added on the core from legs and glutes that I did not do yesterday. I actually like the core work in these workouts. Tonight was an easy Bellicon health bounce. Was 33 mins. Each workout burned about 250 calories. Good thing because we had lunch in the office so all could taste our new menu items and I indulged a bit. :p

Thanks for the kind words about being in shape. I think for a 56 year old woman I have done well in keeping in the best shape I can and we all can say this! I was just telling my son the other day how you ladies kick my butt in workouts!

Deb...you are a good friend being there for her. Hope her appts are going well with not too many side effects. I am planning to visit Madeline in December. She has plenty of people with her and I will fill the gap then. It made sense to spread the visits out so she can stay in her own home. She is amazing. Unbelievable how she keeps bouncing back.

Carolyn...that is a great price for the jumpsport with the bar. That is what I paid when I bought it. I think the bar would be good for your husband. There are some workouts I use it and some I do not. My husband usually does a light bounce and he prefers the stability of the bar. I love my rebounders. Been rebounding now for over a year and love it as much as when I first started.

Diane Sue...can’t believe your car did not start!!!! WTH? On a positive note you had a hreat workout! :) I leave the legs on and do not bother. My smaller rebounder I keep on the side against the wall. The larger with the bar stays put. Can’t really do much with it due to the bar. But that is ok. I put a blanket and pillows on it when not in use and it blends with the decor!

Valerie....good your taking it easy. You’ll be back at it in no time.

Judy...I recently did a JS hiit walk on the rebounder and bounced through it and loved it. Really gets my HR up! Thinking it was the same workout. I am enjoying her workouts on the rebounder. I use my 1.5lb ankle weights and today started with 1lb hand weights. All felt great. I have her youtube standing abs but have not done it yet. Thanks for the reminder as I like standing abs!

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

I went with my friend to her consult with a radiologist. She will be starting treatments on Tuesday.

Valerie, that is so irresponsible of those people! That dog will run into something horrible at some point...a car, another dog, etc. Good that you are being very careful about doing anything that could affect the surgery.

Carolyn, that sounds like a good workout, I have never seen any of hers. Is your husband interested in getting a jumpsport?

Diane Sue, Shoulder presses with 20 pounds??? Yikes...that is heavy! Sorry about your car....that has to be so frustrating. I can't visualize how you use the Fit Tower with a rebounder....

Judy, good workouts!

Lori, LOL on putting a blanket and pillow with your rebounder so it blends in. :). It sounds like Madeline has a great support system of friends and family...so important.

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Today I did D 30 Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps. Workout time was 1 hour 15 minutes with 254 calories burned. Average heart rate was 102 and maximum heart rate 134. I followed up with the Extended Stretch for an additional 15 minutes and 25 calories.

Deb, I know that your friend appreciates the support that you are providing. Cancer treatments and medical appointments can be overwhelming.

Valerie, thanks for mentioning the Costco flyer. I received my copy in the mail yesterday and I saw the Jumpsport. It definitely gives me something to consider.

Diane Sue, I agree with Deb—20 pounds for shoulder presses is amazing! I have just gotten up to 13 pounds for shoulder presses. I am really sorry about your continuing car problems.

Hello to Lori and Judy.

Diane Sue do they have lemon laws in your state? An unreliable car is not worth keeping. I'm forgetting how long you've had it. It seems like you are getting nowhere fast with the dealer I don’t know how lemon laws work exactly but you certainly have given them enough chances to figure it out. Can the dealer take it to the next level? a regional location? Cars are not cheap and not starting reliably is scary. who knows where you could get stuck if it doesn't restart. If it doesn’t seem they are working toward a solution, maybe they would swap out the car for a replacement. I don't have any experience with that but seems like they are wasting a lot of time and resources and not getting anywhere too.

Deb so many people don’t leash their dogs. no excuse. this was a little Yorkie (??) .. I'm not good at ID'ing little purse dogs. he could get eaten in one bite by a big dog and the small ones are so aggressive they seem like they are asking for trouble. nothing to be done there.

Lori too funny. A rebounder as just part of the decor! I love it. Make it into a cocktail table.

We’re going to go to a park this morning and look at water birds with the telescope. Come back mid day and I can take a shower (48 hours!!) and remove and replace the dressing for the first time. First since the surgery. Can hardly wait!! nothing like knowing you can't take one to make you want one desperately.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was FT total body. I have mentioned this before this is my favorite of the three. This was my only workout today.

I will take a picture tomorrow of my rebounder when not in use. TimTim our cat loves it and I find her curled up on it frequently.

Valerie!!!! I laughed out loud with the coffee table comment! Hilarious! Glad you were able to shower. I bet you really enjoyed it!

Deb...the jumpsport is large and then the bar makes it impossible to move around. My husband cracked up the first time he saw the pillows and blanket. His comment was something like..you really don’t think it blends do you? Lol! Sounds like they are being aggressive with her treatments. That is good. They were very aggressive with Madeline and here she is 2.5 years later still with us. Originally they said she had less than a year.

Diane Sue..amazing 20# for presses. I must have missed this. Good for you. I think several years ago when doing STS I used 20’s at one point but not since then. I usually stick with 12’s or 15’s if I am feeling good. Hope you were able to get your car sorted out today.

Carolyn..how many more weeks before you finish STS. 2? Have you seen good results? You must be so proud!!!!!

Have a great night all. No plans for the weekend other than housemax and yardwork. :(

It has been a busy, but fun day :) It has been so cold and windy. There is a freeze warning tonight so I made sure the hoses were all unhooked outside. In a few days it will be back up in the 70's. This morning I did Kelly Coffey Athletic Conditioning Volume 1 workout 1 cardio, 265 calories, heart rate 132 average, 167 max, 2,804 steps. We had to be at the school for the special grandparents event by 10 this morning. We went to lunch afterward with my grandson's other grandparents and then we came back to our house and visited till the high school event at 2. I had a couple of hours and we headed back to the school for the special honoring of parents and grandparents for the cheer, athletes, and band students. This is my granddaughter's senior year. It was so cold out there on the field. We did not stay for the whole football game. There was not time to mess with my car. My husband wants me to print out the different forums where I read about other Chevy Sparks doing the same thing. You would think they would know it has a problem. I am going to let him deal with it.

This is my third time trying to respond so I think it is going to turn into the condensed version. I keep losing it. I go to click to scroll down reading and everything I typed disappears.

Lori, Fit Tower Total Body is my favorite too. I feel I get a pretty good all around strength workout out of it. I have a corner where I can lean my rebounder up against the heavy bag with the bar on it and it still leaves me all of my workout space. I have done this when I had my grandson 3 here for a few days so he could jump on it without me taking the bar off and on. When STS first came out I made great strides on pushing to heavier weights. I was up to 25's for overhead presses. I did deadlifts with 110 pounds. I do test my strength once in awhile to see if I can go heavy still. As I get older I am a bit more careful of injuries.

Deb, I just set the rebounder up against the bars on the Fit tower. The rebounder's curved edge protrudes a bit beyond the Tower. If I am going to be putting body weight against it for some of the moves on SB Bounce, I do what Lori suggested and put some weight plates on the base of the tower to give it more stability. I usually put my mat over the base if I am going to set weight plates on it so I don't scratch it. I guess it is hard to picture.

Carolyn, great work on STS! It won't be long and you will be finished with it.

Valerie, I have never heard anything about lemon laws here. From all of the forums I have read it seems to be a problem that I have not seen a lot posting back saying they got a fix. One said they finally had to change the wires in the steering column. One they had did some fix and reprogrammed everything to the right codes and forgot the radio which caused problems. I cannot find a definitive answer to the problem. I know the car is not old enough and does not have enough miles for it to be something worn out or coroded etc.. I am worried that it is going to cost us. I really do not want a car payment. I am pretty sure they would not trade the car for another without it being a trade in and us paying for another car. Really, if I were to buy another car, I don't think it would be another Chevy after seeing similar problems with other models online and I would not go to that dealership. My husband said we would be better off to buy a used car that works. We have had the car for 3 years this month and it just turned over to 11,000 miles. The warranty runs out this month.
