Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/17/2024

Well we had our first snow. If you can call less than an inch, that only stayed in grassy areas and on things like cars. It's mostly melted at this point, but Derek did get to make use of his windshield brush this morning. I ended up shopping yesterday because we were pretty much out of cat food and I wasn't sure if the snow would be enough to impact roads. This morning I did the Killer Legs Barre Bonus and STS 2 Mat Yoga. Derek got accepted for a studio apartment, which my take from the info I've seen is that it's very minimal, but it's cheap enough that even working only 25 hours, he will be able to pay all his expenses and not have to dip into his savings.

Diane Sue great job with , CDorner yoga mobility and flexibility, her mobility challenge neck, shoulders and CDorner Step, Glute Finisher and Full Body Stretch. Sorry that you are having pain.

Valerie glad that you didn't have issues from your storm, but sounds like other areas weren't so lucky. Great job with the spin, upper body, therapy and walk. My only experience with 50's class sizes, since I was born in '60, is my parents who had graduating classes of around 15, very tiny school.

Judy great job with the Peloton workouts, and you're right about YouTube, you can find instructions for most anything!

Shannon my class wasn't small, they just have to shuffle us to small schools for a few years until they got the new one built. I think in middle school we were close to 400, though we graduated just over 300. K-2 we were spread out to 3 elementary schools and at least 5-6 old country schools. My first grade was definitely an interesting experience. One kindergarten, one first grade, we ate cold lunch at our desks, had a small playground, there was one may two single bathrooms and we had red and green shapes to flip so we knew if they were occupied. We also, put up and took down the flag on the pole every day. Three of us at a time and we knew how to fold it and put it up and down by ourselves. I've never done it since. And since there were no aids, that meant that the teacher had to go out with us and instruct us until we knew how, leaving the classroom with no adult, or once we know how, leaving 3 kids unsupervised right next to the street. A very different time. I would love to take the trip, it's finding a way to break it to DH who would be stuck here for the cats for the duration. I have done as much as 8 days, and they all survived. LOL

Carolyn great job with KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix.

Good morning, ladies. Last night I lifted weights to my 80s playlist and then did STS 2.0 Metabolic Standing Abs, or whatever it’s called. I can work myself harder than when I use a Cathe DVD because I have various workarounds for my hands and wrists that I can't get in place with Cathe's workouts. She moves so fast! I'm feeling it today. :) This morning, I made another trip to Little Rock. I had to take care of a project that unfortunately wasn’t ready when I went in on Tuesday. But it’s done now! I think I spent more time on the road than I did in the office.

Carolyn – good work with KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix. I’ve heard lots of good stuff about her but have never tried any of her workouts.

Judy – I’m glad your knee is doing better. Keep up the great work with those more moderate rides.

Valerie – I read about that storm. They call it a bomb cyclone, and I know those can be whoppers. I’m glad your power stayed on, and I hope the area recovers quickly.

Diane – I’m very glad you’re feeling better today.

Cathy – Yes, any amount of snow that stays on the ground is considered SNOW. At least in Arkansas, LOL. I’m glad Derek found an affordable place to live. I imagine that would be kind of tough since he only gets 25 hours a week. Okay, so – 300 is HUGE. I can’t even comprehend a class that size.

cathy you are right about the damage here. the mountains form a barrier to wind in both directions. wind from the east rather than the west zooms down thru the passes and gaps. like a giant suction machine. opposite direction from usual where winds come from the west. this was a very deep low pressure system off shore, so the wind was intense. it caused more damage in foothill areas. (anything that hits the seattle area gets more publicity than those of us outside it. we are 40-50 miles north of there.) where we walked yesterday was still very windy but it calmed down while we were walking. friday is another similar storm but less intense. ski areas are opening. mt baker has 88 inches of snow already. looks like an early season. Mt Baker area usually gets the most snow. most years we get snow that sticks but not every year. this is a la nina year. likely will get some. nothing like the mountains. a few thousand feet in elevation makes a huge difference.
kids back in the 50's had more responsibility than now. I walked to school by myself at 5 yo. other kids did too. rode my bike around the neighborhood, went to parks. the store. most families had one car and one employed person so the car went to work. at school we were expected to be quiet and stay busy if the teacher stepped out. when I see the niece's helicopter behavior with her 6 yo child I am horrified. gets driven everywhere. shouts and screams constantly in need of immediate and ongoing attention. this kid never thinks for himself for 2 seconds. one shriek like that and I would have been smacked into next tuesday..... extreme in the other direction. it's hard to visit there or even talk to "mom" on the phone without background screaming. tantrums!
if he was set down 2 blocks from his home I dont think he'd get back. cathy it sounds like your kids were raised to be independent and think for themselves. where has that gone lately? I hadn't thought about the flag that duty, I think boy scouts? I got to be a crossing guard. I dont see them anymore.
we have left our cats alone for almost 2 weeks. established pet with run of the house, autofeeder, multiple litter boxes. usually 1week was max. it wasnt ideal but compared to a kennel it was vastly better.

Today I did STS 2.0 Lower Body 2, 2 sets maximum, which was 45 minutes and 126 calories burned. My average heart rate was 103 and maximum heart rate was 130. Then I did STS 2.0 Chair Yoga.

Judy, great job with your Peloton rides, strength training, and stretch.

Valerie, nice job with the 35 minute spin, Stacked Sets Upper Body, therapy exercises, and the park walk. I’m glad that you missed the worst of the storm.

Diane Sue, good job with CDorner step, Raw Glute Finisher, and CDorner stretch.

Cathy, nice work with Killer Legs Bonus Barre and STS 2.0 Mat Yoga.

Shannon, nice job with weights and STS 2.0 Standing Metabolic Abs.

Have a good evening everyone.

Just finished My Finished Step workout and definitely in need of a shower. LOL Killer Barre Bonus, killed my hamstrings, so I added on some foam rolling for them.

Carolyn great job with TS 2.0 Lower Body 2, and Chair Yoga.

Valerie I would say I was middle ground and many would have said leaned helicopter, though not extreme. Because the boys were homeschooled, I was very rarely not with them. Our homeschool group was very eclectic and mostly attachment parenting, so that meant that we had opportunities others didn't. They had a group of adults they saw regularly who they knew they could trust and when there were issue between kids often it wasn't their own parent that stepped into to work things out, but working things out meant sitting down with the ones having the problem and working out a solution. So, when they started playing sports and going to school they viewed adults as allies, from the time they started going if they had an issue, they went to the teacher and discussed it, I didn't have to get involved. But, I also made sure that the I was a presence at school. I volunteered, went to conferences and events. When they got to college, while a lot of kids turned to their parents when they had issues, mine went to their professors. Early on they were very different and Derek was a steep learning curve for me. Nick was literally glued to me until he was about 5. The type that would decide to go play, right before it was time to leave or only if I was tagging along. From the time Derek could crawl he would just see something and go. I was so used to Nick that it took me a fair amount of time to adjust to a toddler who would just crawl/walk off to check off something. I'm sure I had people in my own family convinced that they would never be independent, but any lingering doubts ended as they grew up, and were clearly dead at the point where they both opted to go 7 hours away to college and now they will both be two day drives away. LOL

Today I did P 30 Low Impact HiiT for 31 minutes and 193 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 160.

Cathy, great job with your finished step workout.

The discussion about parenting styles reminded me about a local story from a couple of weeks ago. This occurred in a very small town in north Georgia. A mother was arrested because her son walked to the store alone. She took one child to the doctor and left the 10 year old home alone. He decided to walk to the store which was only a mile away and someone called the police. The boy was never in danger and just went to get a snack. The police arrested the mother for being “negligent “. This story is so ridiculous to me. They want the mother to sign a safety plan and she is refusing to do so. The story is so crazy that it was in The NY Times a few days ago.

Hello to All and have a wonderful day.

Yesterday I did CDorner Basic Step #432 increasing some of the intensity myself as it was really basic and a bit slow, 180 calories, 3,205. I also did STS 2 Mobility 1, 20 minutes, 27 calories. I also did the back pod and exercises with light tubing and neck strengthening.
Today I did CDorner Cardio Barre 35 minutes, 164 calories, heart rate 123/152, 1877 steps used 2 and 3# dumbbells during second half. I some weights on my own with 10# dumbbells 3 sets 12 reps each move, biceps curls front, hammer 3 times, triceps kickbacks 2 sets single kickback, 2 sets double arm kickbacks and band work squeezing between shoulders 3 sets. Back pod and finished with STS 2 total body stretch 24 minutes, 29 calories. Total time today 76 minutes excluding back pod work, 252 calories.

Valerie, nice work on the 35 minute spin ride yesterday. I was a crossing guard in grade school. Big mean boys would pick on me and try to grab my bar that indicated they were to wait.

Cathy, nice work on yesterdays' Killer Legs and STS 2 Mat yoga and today's Finished Step workout.

Shannon, good job on getting in the weights with your 80's playlist and standing metabolic abs from STS 2. After I have done some of Cathe's workouts I put in notes for how I do a move so I am sort of ready. I still usually have to press pause quite often though to get equipment. She does move pretty fast from one move to another.

Carolyn, good job on STS 2.0 Lower Body 2, 2 sets maximum and chair yoga yesterday and P30 Low Impact Hiit today. That story just seems ridiculous. As a parent I might have disciplined my child for leaving the house when I was gone (that is if I told them to stay home and don't answer the door etc.) That is not something for the parents to be punished for. Children that age walk around all of the time. They walk to school and the bus stop. Weird that they would do that to the parents. I could see it if the child was a very young child. We lived in apartments when we first moved to Oklahoma and there were some people that would put their two young children outside and go to work. The 2 year old fell in the pool and drowned. That is when parents should be held accountable.

Just finished Live Boxing Hiit Express and SB Extended Lying Stretch.

Carolyn those kind of stories drive me nuts. Granted there were times when I was growing up that in retrospect the things we did, and our parents ignored seem crazy. We lived next to fields and we'd play in the corn or wheat going acres away where they couldn't see us, and with the corn, find us easily, and we often had our little sister with us. In the winter, one of the fields often flooded, so we'd go off and skate at a distance where we looked like ants from the house. Only time I got in trouble was when a friend from about 3/4 of a mile down the road and I road our bikes down a little side road we weren't supposed to go down, and my brother apparently went out to the road and saw us turn down it, and tattled. Only time I ever got grounded and it was meaningless because it was summer and I rarely went anywhere, and was quite happy to have more reading time. LOL I know the switch happened as there were more stranger danger stories, but sadly, bad things that happen to kids are far more likely to happen with people they know than strangers. But parents started keeping closer and closer tabs on their children. On a somewhat related topic, don't get me started on things like eliminating recess. One thing I was glad of was that our school, had, and as of when Derek graduated, recess and also gym (K-8), even middle school had the option to go outside at lunch or play in the gym. And overall their gym classes sounded a LOT more fun than mine! Great job with P 30 Low Impact HiiT.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Basic Step, CDorner Cardio Barre, Total Body Stretch and the pod exercises. Absolutely that drowning is the kind of thing parents should be charged for.

Today is my rest day. I am cleaning house and doing some advance preparation for Thanksgiving. I try to do as much ahead of time as possible to avoid stress and to be able to enjoy my family. Over the years I realized that I put stress on myself by attempting to do too much. These days I try to simplify things more.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Basic step, STS 2 Mobility 1, CDorner Cardio Barre, STS 2 Total Body Stretch, and the back pod.

Cathy, great job with Live Boxing HiiT Express and SB Lying Stretch.

Hello to Judy, Valerie, and Shannon.

Im surprised that everyone in sight wasn't sued, including the manufacturer of the pool. apartment building owner. etc. I missed the story in the NYT. that's crazy about the kid walking. I had to walk everywhere or I couldn't go. some places my mother walked with me a few times, like kindergarten but it wasnt hard. all the children did it, I wasnt special. even now I dont see why kids could not walk somewhere. they have to be smart enough to understand traffic rules, since most places here dont have sidewalks. we have schoolbuses that stop on highways and kids have to cross the road to get on. its scary when jerks try to zoom past to avoid stopping so kids still need some sense to look right/ left. back when we lived right in the city had recess and a playground. cathy I agree, it wasnt strangers as much as people who were known who posed a threat.

there are still a lot of people out of power here. the storm was intense where it hit mainly south of here seattle and east of there. a lot of houses on little dead end roads. a lot of trees down.

got a new router yesterday. Ours was (we think) causing problems, and last night it stopped working altogether shortly after dinner. DH stopped at best buy on the way back from the dentist yesterday so we'd planned to upgrade anyway, but that made it a priority. he set it up this morning. I stayed out of the way. everything linked right up except for my new desktop. required a tech service call but he got it done and all looks like its working. I dont miss doing it at all.

Today I did CDorner Arms & Butt skipping and modifying some, 41 minutes, 103 calories, heart rate 94/134. I finished with Jessica Smith Walk Strong 3 Total Stretch 18 minutes, 21 calories. I also did the back pod and door stretch and a short bit of foam roller. I don't count the back pod as it is just lying on it and moving to each spot for 60 seconds. I did the door frame stretch but, did not do the back squeezes since I worked upper back in the workout above. I skipped and altered whatever I was feeling in my ribs.
Total time was 59 minutes, 124 calories.

Cathy, nice job on CL Boxing Hiit Express and SB extended stretch. I think I scared my parents a few times disappearing. When I was little, probably around 3 we lived on a farm and my parents said I disappeared. They were so afraid I got in the hog pen. They finally found me in a field taking a nap and my dog was standing guard. When I was around 9 and we lived in England a friend and I decided to ride bikes and rode to a town away from where we lived and visited a friend there, ate dinner there too. My parents were so angry when they finally found us. Me and my brother often crawled through wheat fields and there was a bomb crater past the field we would walk around. It is a wonder we never fell in and it had a lot of water in it. We spent loads of time there in the woods. I guess fear was just not something children think about till they get older. Oh, and my parents said they could not figure out why I was putting the baby chicks in the well. One day they went out and saw me I told them I was giving the chickens a drink. I must have drove them nuts.

Carolyn, I like to get things done and planned ahead for those big meal days with family. I can sure tell I am slowing down though. I have Christmas dinner this year since my husband may be working 12 hour shift and he will barely have time for the family dinner. Usually, he does the turkey and helps with set up. This time there was no help. The year I had the shoulder surgery my granddaughters came over and made the pies and peeled potatoes and stuff and my husband did the turkey. This year I am thinking I may purchase pre-peeled eggs (not the best choice) Maybe icky frozen mashed potatoes or peel a few and mix them together, because my hands hurt terribly preparing Thanksgiving. I like to feel rested and enjoy the family time. I quit using glass dishes and am doing paper plates. Usually, my daughter and granddaughter's husbands clean up the pots and pans afterward.

Valerie, I am glad the setting up the router went smoothly. It has been a few years since we got ours. I can only remember having such a hard time getting it set up. We had chosen one that was a Cox Cable approved one, but it wouldn't work. They had someone come out twice to set it up and one had to call someone else who had the authority to get whoever was responsible to allow something. It ended up costing us. I am afraid of going out myself and getting one after that. It is always miserable being without power. We have some below freezing days coming this next week. Weird it will go in the upper sixties and forecast suddenly drops on Thursday.
