Pentagenarians & Beyond: 01/12/2025

This morning I did LIS Slide and Glide Cardio, SB Bonus Abs and STS 2 Lower Body 2. Somehow I always remember that S&G has burpees, but I also always forget how many! LOL Today is both DH's and my Mother's birthdays. Over the years they have had way too many birthdays interrupted by snow storms. This time it's delayed for 2 days.

Valerie I feel the same as your Wisconsin friends, winters here are overall are not as severe, with some exceptions. The year of 2014 (I think) will go down of me as what I referred to as the winter from hell. Christmas break started a day early, ended a day late and we had an entire week off plus some in January. Added about 2 extra weeks to the school year (other places were worse) and Michigan actually revised its snow day policy to lessen the chance of it happening again. Sounds like you did everything possible to protect your house from fires. Years ago, the boys went over to the neighbors and watched a fire in an area with lots of waist tall vegetation burn (that was set off my the people there). Took forever for the firefighters to show up, but it really helped that the house between him and the fire, set back quite a ways, mowed either side of their dirt drive. Kept it from expanding. And made us all hope we never needed the fire department.

Carolyn glad your power didn't stay out long. Ice creates such an issue for roads, power lines and trees.

Shannon good luck to your Mom reasoning with your Dad. Every time something happens with my parents and we think they'll start making changes, a bit of time passes and they seem to get amnesia about it. 50" may seem like a lot, but most of it comes 1-3" at a time. We shoveled the drive yesterday, but it was maybe 3". More coming in a couple days though, and conditions aren't likely to melt it much. But the prediction for that is only 1-3 again. We haven't gotten more than that all winter. And no on the plunge, but I'll have to do it today, as someone is coming to look at the water heater tomorrow and in case he comes during my workout, I'm doing it in Derek's room (which we need to rename) and using my laptop.

Diane Sue yes, I'm an Apple girl back in to the mid 80's when I got one of their first setups. We have a desk top, and I have a MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone. I like how easily they all work together. Other systems just don't feel as intuitive to me. Plus when my Dad has issues with his laptop, pad or phone, I can say I've no clue, talk to my sister the tech person. LOL I never learned how other delivery services pay but with Shipt it was a minimum per shop plus a small percent of the total reciept. So a shop of $100 with a reasonable delivery location was good. And I know shoppers in cities often did 2-3 small shops at the same time if the deliveries were fairly close together. You had to be super careful though to keep everything separate because you didn't want to give something to the wrong person and you had to scan all the receipts before delivery.

Judy I think you got more snow than we did out of that one. I've had password issues with my OnDemand account before and I never know what causes them. It just stops working.

Today I did my usual yoga/mobility for 20 minutes. We should see some improvement in our weather today since the temperature will finally get above freezing.

Diane Sue, nice job with LMR Functional Mobility Fusion + Cardio bonus and CDorner Mobility Stretch.

Judy, great job with 45 minute Peloton ride and LMR Lower Body Foam Rolling.

Shannon, your father’s health situation is very difficult. It’s great that you can have such enjoyable walks on your property.

Cathy, great job with LIS Slide and Glide cardio, SB Bonus Abs, and STS 2 Lower Body 2. That sounds like a tough workout.

Hello to Valerie.

We did the park walk this morning that we intended for yesterday. it was great this morning! mdrizzled a little but 40. first part was normal, around 8 am, but about 2/3 of the way we were walking along a high bluff over the water and we started hearing loons calling. other birds too but when we heard loud Whoosh sounds. there are a few open places to see the water and yes, whales. there were several (probably) gray whales close to shore moving along. mostly underwater, just see the backs come up a little. they come into the sound while traveling north to alaska to stop and feed. so cool! never saw whales there before. also loads of other birds along with the calling loons. its such a beautiful call. thi is not the big dramatic breeching and leaping , they were just quietly feeding., walk ended up taking an hour and a half instead of the usual hour fifteen.

my parents are long gone. my father didnt live well. major heart problems, smoked his whole life etc. I think he was 78. my mother l lived to 98. not too happily. she had bad arthritis but refused to have any surgery to help herself. my brother took over her care mainly because he wanted to live in her house. he kept it for himself after undoing her will and removing me and my sister from it. our mother signed it. I never got along with her that well but that ended pleasant memories. I didnt expect to inherit a lot and planned to give my share to my sister and brother anyway. That REALLY ended any relationship with my brother who acted like a jerk before, but sort of outdid himself at the end. so Im stuck managing my sister since she and brother don't speak anymore either.

Cathy you're right about the amnesia. two steps forward, then 3 steps back. its so hard to get people, especially old people, to change anything.... even if what they're doing doesn't work at all. our snow totals get measured like that too. some areas might get 100 feet over the season but it settles and melts and compresses and blows around so its measured as it falls., and does not end up being that deep. when we get snow down low it might be an inch to a foot, but we start shoveling as soon as it starts accumulating because we have a massive area that needs clearing. none so far this year.

Rest day today and doctor in the morning. The snow is almost all gone now and a heat wave of 47 today. It is dropping fast though and not as high tomorrow. They actually have some 60's forecast a couple of days later in the week then drops again.

Cathy, nice work on LIS Slide and Glide Cardio, SB Bonus Abs and STS 2 Lower Body 2. I think Cathe had more than one workout where she did gliding disc burpees, push ups, and other miserable moves. Really for quite some time I did the slide and glide cardio a lot. That was when it first came out. Here they have a certain amount of snow days planned in the school year. If they have to go over they have to extend days of school. When we first moved here they usually had school with some of the snow and hard rains. After a few disasters happened they changed policies and do not take chances with the children's lives.
We do not get a lot of snow often. I only remember 3 times in the 30 plus years we lived here that we had a lot of deep snow. One was in October which no one expected at all, one I think March when my husband was coming home to visit from Afghanistan, and it was so high they plowed the country road enough for one car to get through. My son had picked me up to take me to the airport and I thought we were never going to get into the city on time. Snow so high that if you needed to get out of the vehicle the door wouldn't open. I have received other people's bags of groceries. I am sure missing items of mine are left at someone else's house. I always feel sorry for the people that are missing their stuff. When I call Walmart to report they say to keep the stuff they will compensate the other people. I had one delivery person come back and give me a bag he had missed.
I guess we get used to something it is hard to change. I always have felt the Samsung stuff was easier and easy to set back up from one device to another. The problem is when my daughter and granddaughter post pictures in Google from their iPhone I can only seem to get copies for myself hooking into my laptop.

Carolyn, good job on the 20 minute yoga today.

Valerie, I can see why your walk took longer. How nice to enjoy seeing the whales feeding and the loons calling. It sounds so pleasant.

Hi to Shannon and Judy

Happy Monday, everyone. Yesterday I took walk on the road, not a power walk or anything, just a nice walk. I also went up in the woods on a second walk because it just didn’t seem right to stay inside. I really needed to get one more walk in the snow! Not much snow left in the fields, but there is still several inches up in the woods, because that’s on a north facing hill. I’m able to take Sara for short walks to the barn because we can walk in the tire tracks that Dad makes with the Mule. But Sara insisted on sniffing around in deeper snow – which at that point barely covered the tops of my shoes, but was all the way up to her little tummy. Needless to say, her coat was soaked.

Diane – I’m really sorry that Functional Mobility bothers your hands so much. When you say they sting, is it like a pins and needles feeling? Maybe you have some sort of compressed nerve. Just wondering because it reminds me of my arm right now. And I really feel for you with your neck and spine problems. I’m glad stretching is able to make it a little better. Yep, sun salutations seem like a waste of time to me too. And I do the exact same as you – go from down dog to my knees instead of plank. Thank you for your sympathy about my dad.

Judy – I sort of laughed when you said lake effect snow is rare. I can’t figure out how anybody in Michigan could avoid it, because you have lakes on three sides! But I’m glad you don’t have to deal with it. I’ve heard stories about how deep that can get! Thank you also for your sympathy about my dad.

Valerie – Yes, Dad is very lucky to be able to move, and yes, a lot of it is from pure willpower and stubbornness. But I sure am glad he keeps trying. He has a Mule (an all-terrain utility vehicle), which is his main way to get around the property. It’s the size of a small car with hauling capacity, etc. He also has a track chair (did I post a pic of that once?) and a couple of scooter-type things, as well as an electric wheelchair that he keeps plugged in and charged down at the barn so he can get around there. Speaking of burying your propane tank – My parents have a full-house generator in case the power goes out. They buried the propane tank that supplies it because yep. Those tanks are butt-ugly. Wow, your story about the whales is so cool! That’s quite an experience. Your family story is very sad, and I’m sorry it all ended that way.

Cathy – Wow, Slide and Glide. Now there’s one I haven’t done in forever and a day. Was it fun? Maybe Mom will have a tiny effect on Dad. He was totally exhausted the day after he fell. He’d done way too much that day and had been out in the cold for too long. Maybe he realized that he needs to take it easy. But I’m sure he’ll get amnesia too.

Carolyn – I’m glad it’s warming up at your place so the ice can melt. I hope it melts quickly. Yes, I totally love walking on our property. I am very fortunate!

Yesterday I did a 45-minute Peloton ride. I plan on doing strength work later today.

Cathy-Great job with LIS Slide and Glide Cardio, SB Bonus Abs and STS 2 Lower Body 2. I’ve been an Apple user since 2013, when I got my first iPhone. I went from Blackberry to iPhone and I loved iOS so much that I ended up getting an iPad too. We still use Windows PCs as our main computers but I wouldn’t have any problem switching to all Apple. My husband builds gaming PCs as a hobby so we can’t get away from Windows completely.

Carolyn-Great job with your yoga/mobility. I’m glad your weather is going to get better.

Valerie-Great job with your park walk. That sounds really nice.

Diane Sue-I hope you had a good rest day and that your doctor visit goes well.

Shannon-Great job with your walk. Most of Michigan does get a lot of snow but we are fortunate to be in a location that doesn’t get as much. We do have long dreary winters without a lot of sun though.

This morning I did a Mixed Step workout I put together and I'll be deleting that one. Really doesn't work for me and I've done it twice now. Then I did LMR Mobility. When I got up and through the cardio, I thought I'd managed to not get my legs sore from yesterday. Then I sat down had my smoothie and tea, and got back up-hello legs! LOL Made doing the Mobility workout a bit uncomfortable. Mostly for the mobility squats.

Carolyn I did the cardio and abs before breakfast weights after. When I do an early workout, I generally split things into before and after breakfast.

Valerie hearing the loons and seeing whales is so cool. Been a long time since I've been up north in a place to hear the loons calling. Growing up my grandparents had a cottage and there was generally a pair of loons on the lake.

Diane Sue Cathe does burpees in a fair amount of cardio videos, but what makes Slide and Glide more challenging, at least for me, is that there are really no breaks, not even short ones in that workout. I worked at the school for awhile and found out how snow days are decided. At least one or two people are lucky enough to get to go out and drive around, especially the backroads. The superintendent consults all neighboring school districts, we have 6 that we border with. Then a committee of 4-5 vote on whether to close or not. And that's usually all down by 5-5:30 a.m because our drivers are out on the road before 6:30 and have to get their buses ready. I took the boys to school and there were days I was like why didn't we cancel. Clearly they didn't take my thoughts into the equation. LOL

Shannon lake affect snow is the lake plus weather pattern. My parents are in K'zoo and often get lake affect snow. We're more in the middle so we don't get it often. Westside of the state seems to be the worst for getting it. They can get hit really hard. They often have to close M-28 that runs along the top of the upper peninsula from Munising to Marquette. Not as much from snow as from white outs. A normal 45 minute drive can be almost totally white out conditions. Having been in two bad whiteouts, I can attest that if there is the slightest chance of them I go a different way. In 7 years of having kids in Marquette, I stayed far too many extra nights places to avoid issues. One time I spent 3 extra nights all in different locations trying to get home.

Judy I rarely use our desktop and if it was just me, I probably wouldn't bother, but my husband uses it for everything. I generally only use it when I need to print something. He uses Chrome for all his stuff, and I use Safari, keeps things nice and separate for when I need it.

Today I did P 30 Low Impact HiiT and the Extended Stretch for 37 minutes and 215 calories burned. My average heart rate was 124 and maximum heart rate was 159.

Valerie, it’s great that you saw loons and whales as well as other birds while on your walk.

Diane Sue, I hope that your doctor’s appointment goes well today.

Shannon, walking and enjoying the snow sounds perfect for relaxing.

Judy, great job with your 45 minute Peloton ride.

Cathy, nice job with your mixed step workout and LMR Mobility.

there are likely exceptions. the jet ( wind) stream flows from west to east. it blows over water, picks up moisture and drops it when it as snow or rain when it hits land. thats where lake effect snow usually occurs. Im sure there will be exceptions. in wisconsin where I lived we were right next to lake michigan but usually the winds came from west or southwest so any lake effect snow went to michigan. Ruining cathy's driving plans.

We were so lucky yesterday!. we walk that same route a lot. most of my rehab from back surgery. we never saw whales there before even though we've read that stretch of water often has them. we see loons in winter a lot but usually they are quiet in winter plumage. Loons need big long lakes to nest so most move north to canada etc in spring. they are big heavy birds. need a long runway on water to build enough lift to take off so small lakes dont work. one of the loveliest bird songs. they are mainly in WA in winter on salt water.

probably a day off today, maybe therapy work later. getting some contractor work done today.

Today I did RWH Low Impact Hiit 1 and STS 2 Upper Body 1. It's snowing again. It's saying an inch or two, but it's coming down pretty good right now. Looks like it should stop around noon or two depending on which weather app is right. LOL

Valerie I got a laugh from your ruining my driving plans comment. The best place to see Loons at least that I've found is the Seney Wildlife Refuge middle of the UP. It's a large area with many, what they term pools. A lot of the loons there are banded. The oldest known pair of loons is there, at least they still were last summer at ages 37 and 38. They were a pair for 25 years, but something happened in '22 and they split up. Both are still breeding, though she seems to be more successful since the split then he does.

Today I did STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body. My time was 51 minute, 184 calories burned, average heart rate 112, and maximum heart rate 135. I spent much of day dealing with Express Scripts, Walgreens, and the doctors office. I was finally able to get a temporary refill for my husband’s prescription from Walgreens while Express Scripts works on the “delay” in shipping.

Cathy, great job with RWH Low Impact HiiT 1 and STS 2 Upper Body 1.

Waving hello to everyone. Have a nice remainder of the day.

Yesterday ended up being an active rest day. I did my physical therapy work and some core work. Today I did a 20-minute walk, 50 minutes of Peloton rides and a 10-minute Peloton row.

Cathy-Great job with your mixed step workout, LMR Mobility, RWH Low Impact Hiit 1 and STS 2 Upper Body 1. It’s gotten very cold here and next week looks even worse.

Carolyn-Great job with P 30 Low Impact HiiT, Extended Stretch and STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body. I’m sorry you had to deal with prescription issues. That can be very frustrating.

Hi to Diane Sue, Valerie & Shannon

No workout yesterday since I had the doctor appointment and then we spent 3 hours at Verizon. This morning I did LMR Functional Pilates Fusion, 34 minutes, 77 calories. That is all I had time for and I wanted to get my back and ribs loosened up. This does have quite a bit of time on hands for the fabric band work and mini ball work. They had to get my husband's phone from another store and now I am getting a new one because there system doesn't work with my 3 year old phone. Mine should be there tomorrow(hopefully) And I still cannot get on their app for some reason so I can set up the internet.
Doctor's appointment has me going to two more appointments. One for a pulmonary function test for asthma and a CT of my lungs. I am not looking forward to it. I have cardiovascular echo and dr next week and now the PF test. Messes me up on getting things done.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I was in meetings in Little Rock and didn’t have time to play on the computer. Let’s see. Monday I did a total body weight workout on my own and then did the Abs #1 bonus that’s on Super Cuts. Yesterday I did After Burn, always one of my favorites. But I changed the intervals where Cathe uses weights and put more of a cardio emphasis on them. Her moves are very shoulder-intensive, and I did shoulder work on Monday.

I guess several of us are preparing for a big Arctic blast. Arkansas is supposed to get some really cold temperatures beginning Sunday. We’ve had colder, but still, this is going to be pretty dang cold for us. At least there’s no precipitation associated with it. My poor tiny dog does not need to deal with more snow, LOL.

Judy – How long is “long” for your winter? Bummer that the sun doesn’t shine. We get a mix of sun and clouds. When it stays cloudy for a while, my mom goes nuts. Pretty sure she has SAD – seasonal affective disorder. But right now it’s sunny and lovely. Our winter sort of starts in December but doesn’t really get cold until January (like now). It’s pretty much over by March. Then we have about two weeks of spring and launch straight into summer. Ugh. That might be a slight exaggeration, but not by much.

Cathy – I’m sorry your Mixed Step workout didn’t work for you. Just consider it a new creative opportunity to put together another one. The RWH low impact workouts are some of my favorites. I have never been in a whiteout and hope to never be in one.

Carolyn – Nice work with P30 Low Impact HiiT. The snow walk was relaxing mentally, but not physically. The snow was wet and slippery, and I slid a couple of times. But it was fun and totally worth it. Your day yesterday sounds rather tedious. Ugh.

Valerie – I’m going to have to google a recording of Loons. I’ve never heard them. Have you ever heard a Whippoorwill? Damn I hate those birds, LOL. They are so loud, and one inevitably decides to perch in the trees right outside my bedroom window. They are nocturnal, and you do not sleep if one is that close.

Diane – Please keep us posted on your upcoming tests. I’m sorry you have to deal with them, but I hope they lead to some relief for you.

Today I did LIC Step Combos and Lower/Upper Body Balance Discs with SB Extended Stretch. It's snowing again, lightly but snowing. After going pretty much till Christmas without any, especially since Jan 1st it's been like a little bit every day. Making up for November and most of December! I don't know about July or August, but I was on Mackinac Island in early June once and there were flurries!

Shannon it's funny the other day Derek commented that he was really looking forward to spring, and I said when is spring in Bismarck, and he has no idea. I'm guessing it's probably similar to the western UP and they can get cold weather into May, I've certainly had plans changed up there because of bad snow storms in May. We're going above 30 for 3 days at the end of the week, but then we've got a few very cold days. Though I have to say that my perspective on cold has changed a bit since seeing Derek's temps. Windchill was -39 the other day.

Diane Sue I hope all your appointments go well.

Judy I'm happy that I can just stay home on those really cold days.

Hi Carolyn and Valerie.

I only got in therapy work yesterday. we didnt like the floor tile we picked so went back and picked another one. brought floor samples back here and compared and decided we had been totally wrong about what would work. we think this is a better choice now but it delayed things a bit. it will probably cost extra but better than putting down a mistake and having to yank it afterward. today the crew is doing the wall tiles. floor will get done when new tiles get here in a day.

I remember very few "snow days" from when was in Milwaukee. we must have had some. I remember a cold spell where it was -20 to -30. actual temp, not wind chill. cars froze solid. keys would not turn, brakes got stiff and locked up and would not release, all kinds of weird things. I was working 3 rd shift. remember going outside every few hours and running the car for 10 minutes so it might start when it was time to go home. no garage or anything cushy like that. white outs I've been in more in Washington than in wisconsin. in the mountains the weather can be0 pretty nasty, even when its benign down lower. . I remember getting dizzy while driving, disoriented due to heavy snow flying into the windshield, and trying to stay on the road. impossible to see. it was extremely scary and exhausting. there was no safe spot to pull off for a long ways. several times we cancelled because the interstate was closed in ID, MT, eastern WA due to blowing snow. every time we try to go to the Dakotas there's something wrong with the weather. too hot, too cold, blizzards, always something. flew there a few times for work only.

shannon never heard a whip poor will. I played it on a birding app on my phone, very cool but not easy to ignore. I have a Sibley birding app on my phone that shows all the birds in the US, with pics, location maps, songs, all kinds of info. it cost a little, maybe $20? also have a free one from Cornell. records and identifies birds by their songs. its great!. then you know what to look for and find out how wrong you have been about what you think you hear.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. That was 26 minutes, 197 calories, average heart rate 137, and maximum heart rate 168. This is another one of those days that I have had too much to do. I hope that tomorrow is more normal with no problems.

Hello to everyone and have a nice evening.

Today I did a 45-minute walk and 15 minutes of PT work.

Diane Sue-Great job with LMR Functional Pilates Fusion. I hope all of your tests and appointments go well.

Shannon-Nice job with your total body workout, bonus abs and After Burn. That is a really good one that I haven’t done in ages. I need to revisit it. Winter here lasts from around November to May. It doesn’t really get nice out until well into June.

Cathy-Great job with LIC Step Combos, Lower/Upper Body Balance Discs and SB Extended Stretch.

Valerie-Nice job with your therapy work. I remember some bad cold spells from when I lived in Iowa. It was miserable, with temperatures of -30 and windchills of -60. I shouldn’t be complaining about Michigan weather, at least it hasn’t been that cold.

Carolyn-Great job with Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. I hope you have a quiet and relaxing day tomorrow.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did STS 2 Super Sets Total Body and Core Plus Floor. Super Sets was okay, but I just don’t lift heavy enough to get the full benefit from that sort of workout. I’d love to go heavier, but my hands will protest. I really do like Core Plus Floor. I suspect our snow won’t be totally melted before the deep freeze hits. A lot of our property is on or in the shadow of a north-facing hill covered in trees. But that’s okay. The roads are clear. That’s what really matters.

Cathy – When I saw your abbreviation SB, it made me think of Step Blast, my all time favorite. Then I thought of Body Max 2, which has a fabulous all-cardio premix. You should create a routine using those! I can’t even conceive of -39, and I sure don’t want to experience it. A few years ago, we had some serious cold, and when I got in the car to drive to work, the actual temp was -2. OMG, it was awful. I didn’t think my car would ever warm up. I worked in Yellowstone for a summer while I was in college, and it snowed once in August. That was rather amazing, because down here, I call August Hell Month. Yes, it’s that hot.

Valerie – Wow, the loon’s call is kind of eerie! It reminded me more of a wolf or something instead of a bird. I’m glad you saw that the original floor tile wasn’t going to work before they started laying it! Whew. LOL, when I was growing up, the schools built snow days into the calendar. And it didn’t take much for the district to call one. It was so fun to stay home and play in the snow. That cold spell you had sounds horrible. I don’t like our southern summers at all, but I honestly don’t think I could survive a northern winter.

Carolyn – I hope today isn’t so busy for you!

Judy – Yes, After Burn is a very good workout. I hope you enjoy it when you pull it out again. Our seasons are just the opposite. Summer, which includes a very hot “spring”, down here can last from mid-April through October. I think we actually had a decent spring last year though.

Hello to Diane.
