Panera's Bread

I am big fan of Panera's. I really do love their salad's which is all I eat when I go and the side of a whole grain baguette. I thought that the salad's were pretty healthy cause I read that their food is organic and the dressings were fatfree. When I eat a salad from Panera's I dont consider it a cheat meal. Last night my husband told me he read an article on spark people that said the salads were unhealthy and I didnt want to believe him. What do you guys think???

I love me some Panera too! I get the whole grain bread all the time for home. It's great toasted with PB on it :) There are nutritional values posted either on their website or on www.DWLZ.com. I think you would be surprised how bad some of the things are. I usually do the "pick two" with 1/2 sandwich and small salad or their chicken noodle soup which is awesome.

Your husband is partially correct. It is was goes with the greens that make it unhealthy. For example, if the salad contains fruit as part of the mixture then you would be fine. A cesaer salad has croutons, salad dressing, and cheese that would make it unhealthy. I believe Panera's salads are problably healthier than most other restaurants. I know at McDonalds, a person is healthier eating a Big Mac than one of their salads.

I love Panera too. This weekend I just had a combo of half a salad and half a sandwich. I was surprised to see the nutritional info on their site for their sandwiches! I got the 1/2 Ham & Swiss on rye with NO mayo and the 1/2 classic salad with the balsamic vinegrette on the side, and the calories on their site said it was like 390 calories for the sandwich ALONE! (keeping in mind it included mayo, which I didn't get, but STILL).

It's yummy, isn't it!?

I love Panera, but check the website before you go. It can be very deceptive. When they start adding things besides veggies to the salads it can add up. I normally go with a half and half combo of either soup/salad/sandwich, depending on what I'm in the mood for. I can have a higher cal sandwich and some lighter soup or a garden salad. That way I can have what I want, and have something healthier too

GoodGrief! Thank you for that info. There are definitely some shockers in there. I will most likely be going to Panera on Fri with a friend and I will be looking that menu over and telling her also. Actually I think most of them are shockers.

Beware of the appallingly high sodium content of many Panera foods. You can easily consume a days worth of sodium in one meal.

Au Bon Pain Portions

Oooh, I love Panera but I always want those insanely good grilled sandwiches which are probably 3 days worth of calories each so I don't go very often.

I was at the hospital today and they have an Au Bon Pain, which also has its share of crazy sammiches but....

they also have this great line of things called Portions where it's just a little bit of food! Enough to cover a reasonably clean-eating snack.

Today I had a Smoked Turkey, Asparagus, Cranberry Chutney, and Gorgonzola which weighs in as follows:

Calories - 140
Fat - 5g
Protein - 13g
Carbs - 10g
Fiber - 1g

They have a ton to choose from. Very refreshing change of pace.
