P90X Assisted Pull Up

Robin, great video! I think Lorrie posted recently that her trainer was having her do pullups like this. I am definitely interested!

I always used the 'foot or feet on the back of a weighted-down kitchen chair' assistance method. I really don't trust the bands. I think they would be hard to get into postion, and they might slip and cause some real pain (though I've just kinda tried it with regular resistance tubes and not bands)

You have to be careful when using standard resistance bands (or cords) with assited moves.. they are prone to breaking when shtretched too much (Ive had several resistance bands break on me.)

Ive used my medium band for pullup assistance, it gives a decent amount or assistance.. but Im pretty short so it didnt have to stretch too much, plus it was a little hard to get into position with.. Ive never used the cords though..

There are special bands designed just for pullups as well as weightlfting and whatnot.. the site that Leanne listed has some of them.. they're not as easy to find individually as regular resistance bands, but they're made for more heavy-duty use, like pullups and any other bodyweight exercises.

I'd suggest, like the others have said, using bands MADE for assisted pull ups. I just ordered 2 last week and am HOPING AND PRAYING they're here by Tuesday's back workout (which is Disc 2 of STS) so that I can use them for assisted pullup/chinups.

I have the Iron Gym door pullup bar and use a purple dynaband for assistance (used this method for 2 P90X rounds). I simply looped the dynaband around the bar, double knotted it and put my right foot (not knee) in it for assistance. I'm 125# if that helps. Not sure how safe it is (or how much weight it will hold) but I haven't had any issues. HTH!

Jazcam - I constructed a "home made gravitron" for assistance on pull ups. I'm also kinda sketchy about bands breaking. Here's a link from the CrossFit boards where someone posted about theirs...I basically made the same thing from their photos.

It probably cost me all of $15-$20 for the materials (lots of rope left over) and I can easily adjust and gage that amount of weighted assistance I'm using.

That looks pretty cool, but obviously it's for a real workout room (not my family room where I happen to workout). :)

ITA: The dynabands are not made to hold that kind of body weight let alone the friction from rubbing on the PullUp Bar...I am using a kitchen chair until my heavy duty bands arrive tomorrow...I used the chair for Back Disc 3 yesterday and am PLENTY SORE today! lol

Just to all who are using dyna-bands or the like...BE CAREFUL...1 accident is all it takes to change your life forever...or a loved ones. Its only about 15 bucks to have the right equipment and one band will probably last you a lifetime.

Gayle: If you don't mind, where did you get the band made for assisted pull ups? I will get a few instead of using my resistance tubing. It's probably better to be safe than sorry. :)

Thanks Gayle and everyone else.
