Nutrition bar recommendations?

UnstrungHarp

Cathlete
Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting anywhere other than the Video/DVD comments & questions forum. (Thanks again to everyone who told me to buy CTX!) My question is if anyone has any recommendations about nutrition/protein bars. I don't have a lot of time for meal or snack preparation in the morning before work, and I usually take a late lunch break. I eat a big bowl of Fiber One cereal every morning (this is non-negotiable!) around 8:00 a.m. but don't take a lunch break until I'm beyond starving, which is around 2:00 or 2:30 p.m. I'd like to have something I can eat quickly and non-obtrusively at my desk at maybe 11:30 or so, then I can still eat a healthy and light lunch later in the afternoon (I usually get a salad or grilled chicken sandwich somewhere). I know my metabolism must be suffering from my eating schedule, especially since I tend to overeat at lunch after waiting so long. Then, I also try to eat something for dinner before 6 p.m., because I do one of Cathe's workouts every night somewhere between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.

I know a lot of "nutrition" bars out there are nothing more than dressed up candy bars with too much sugar. I want something more than just empty calories to tide me over until lunch time, so I'm looking for something that has relatively low sugar and more "good stuff" (especially protein). I also don't expect it to taste like a candy bar either...I guess I'm willing to sacrifice when it comes to taste. :)

Any ideas?? Thank you in advance!

I like the Zone Bars, altho they are a tad high on the sugar content. About 40/40/30 ratios. Odyssey Bars are good, Detour or U-turn bars are good also.

You're right that most "nutrition" bars are nothing but glorified candy bars.

One that I like is called Vegan bar (not to original!). It's in a yellow wrapper. I get it from www.veganessentials.com ). There is an original flavor (the one I like), a "greens" (horribly "green' tasting because of the spirulina in it...yuk!) and an "omega-3" version (with flax..also not as tasty) as well as a chocolate chip version (good, but I'm limiting my chocolate). It's high in raw foods--sprouts and dried fruit--and has a good balance of nutrients, including 14 gm. of protein. I sometimes have one for a light lunch, and don't feel like I'm eating a "candy bar," but an actual food.

I second the Zone bars and Detour bars. Detour bars have the texture of a candy bar, which Zone is more crunchy.

I use South Beach Diet Meal Replacement bars all the time when I'm in a hurry. 19g protein, and no sugar, but it probably has sucralose (Splenda) in it. Peanut Butter's my favorite. I pair it with some fruit if I've got the time to eat it.

You may not want as many calories as you get in a meal replacement ba, since you eat luncch 2 hours later. I like the Luna bars for a lighter snack. They have about 8g protein, not super high, but enough that I don't feel like I just ate a sugary carb load. They are VERY tasty too! The lemon bars reminds me of the real thing.

I love the Oneway bars. they are very low in sugar and have 20g of protein. They are delicious too. I but them in packages of six ($5)at Walmart. They have chocolate PB and Caramel. Both very yummy!

Thanks to everyone so far. Those Oneway bars sound especially promising! I will jot down these ideas and refer to them the next time I go grocery shopping. :)

>GNC?

You can get the bars at some grocery stores. I also like the Southbeach Cereal Bars.

I enjoy the Dexatrim All in One bars. One fave...Chocolate Toffee Crunch. 180 cal, 5g fat, 5 g fiber, 15g protein, 1g sugar.

mmmmmm....yummmm...

Yes, check out the Detour, One Way, etc bars at WalMart. They range from 150-180 calories, 4-6 grams of fat, 13-16 grams of carbohydrates, 2-6 grams of sugar, and 15 grams of protein. Made by Designer Whey. Under $6.00 for a box of 6. They are the size of a small candy bar, but I have found that if I eat one with a good sized glass of water, they hold me for a good 2 hours. They don't have a lot of other nutrients, though, like a "meal replacement" bar would.

If you want a few more calories and/or protein, try Pure Protein bars, also at WalMart. These cost more, though...over $1.00 per bar. They have a couple fruity flavors.

I love odwalla super protein - 16 g protein - 240 cal - 20 sugars.

I'm not great on getting my protein so for me this is great.

Some of the others look great too.

I like to be careful with some of the nutritional bars and their claims so I check up on them...according to Consumer Labs, although the majority of bars tested met their claims but both the new Triple Layer Deluxe Whey Detour bars contained 33% more carbohydrates than its stated 25gms and Zone Perfect (Fudge Graham) contained 27% more saturated fat than the 3gms claimed. No wonder they taste so goodx(.
