Not worth the energy....

Just checking in to say you're not alone! It gets frustrating after awhile, doesn't it? Everyone on my DH's side of the family (except for DH) is extremely obese. I bring my own fruit or veggie platter for get togethers and I get made fun of *every single time.* An email planning conversation between them can go like this:

"What's everyone bringing for Sunday's lunch? I'm making ribs on the grill and chips and dip." says MIL.

"Macaroni and cheese with my triple cheese recipe! Plus caramel corn!" said SIL #1.

"Chocolate cake and ice cream," says SIL #2. "What's violinga1 bringing?"

"Oh, probably more balled up melon or something x( ..." says SIL #1.

Yeah, but thing is that they don't realize what you put into it even if you tell them. It's kinda insulting. It's like they assume we eat like them and barely work out and look super fit all the sudden. not so. Usually the comment is said in a jealous condescending tone and that is what is frustrating.
Yeah, I DO feel lucky too! But not in the way they are thinking.

I could easily make it lower on my priorities and then loose motivation, make lots of excuses..(I have before) but in the end it is a choice. The great thing is too that now it's easier than ever to workout with dvds and cheap weights at walmart. (even if not Cathe there is stuff like Tae Bo, Biggest Looser etc)

And I CAN understand some people just work WAY too hard/many hours or have too much chaos in their life to have a regular fitness time. But my MIL who works like 60-80 hrs a week gets out for walking and uses some hand weights. I just heard she has a friend who is now her personal trainer and has been working out. She also eats pretty healthy if not more so than me and takes her food to work. If she can do it with her crazy schedule most anyone can.

Next time violinga1, be sure to tell them you are going to bring them a nice tall glass of shut the he11 up! :7

After being heavy in high school and dropping weight due to a much better schedule and less pigging out, I still HATE that "You're so LUCKY you can eat ANYTHING you WANT".

Yea right - that's why there is now a fat pad from my waist to my knees.

I work hard just to keep it from growing and slowly it is changing. Some people can get motivated for a short period of time but don't see nutrition and exercise as something necessary like sleeping and eating.

It's so sad as you look around the country and see nothing but overweight people, children included. Do you ever notice that in so many news stories all you see are overweight people waddling around. Finally the gov't is trying to help, but it's the people who need to get on the wagon.

Too bad they don't see that just that one minor change - like Gayle's SO made with his two weeks away - can make a lifestyle change forever, in addition to making you feel better.

Oh well, we figured out the "secret" - love yourself enough to take care of yourself.

i can totally see your point there. i am lucky to have fallen into a lifestyle that i enjoy and gives me empowerment. its just very bothering that the idea of fitness is based on a number of a scale or a jean size(can you believe i am actually a happy size 12). that is not the message i want to send out to my child, its just not my message at all of fitness anyway, so its real insulting when family members say the lucky comment esp. with viola right there. ppl i don't know well might say it and it doesn't bother me that much b/c they might not know my whole stance on it and i might explain well to me exercise and healthy eating is more then looks for me. its being strong and happy and pushing yourself in a workout that you never thought you could. my family should just know better after 8 1/2 years by now.

*nods* I know what you mean, Jess. I guess I've just reached a point where it doesn't register with me anymore. At least not in a negative way. If someone says, "Oh, you're so lucky. You can eat whatever you want." I think, "I must be lookin' pretty good!":7

I love the Ding Dong/Cosmo diet. :+

LOL! thats a way to think about it. ;) I wouldn't say I really get "upset" just kinda annoyed. Esp when I try to explain what I do and they completely ignore me. But I don't dwell on it or anything. just minor peeve. hehe.

Hi Gayle,

You are correct that it is not worth the energy. Good news about your friend starting couch to 5K. So you must be getting through to somebody!!

I sometimes get asked what I do to say "in shape", which I take as
a nice compliment. That question is at least proof that others realize that it does take work and just doesn't happen so that is good. But you should see their faces when I mention weight training.
You might think that I said I ate raw meat or something. I think people are willing to almost starve themselves instead of starting a strength program. It is sad and I wonder, don't they worry about their bone health in addition to what their senior years are going to be like?

Keep doing what you do, as we know it is so worth it.

Indeedy. I find it scary that the medical community sees it as a more reasonable option to push statins on kids rather than telling their parents they need healthy foods and to get up off their arses and go outside and play. I guess those pharma kickbacks must good these days.

" I guess those pharma kickbacks must good these days."

These do not exist. At least not where I practice and I do not know of any health care provider that gets kickbacks from any company.

The problem IMO many times is with the parents. They would rather give their kids a pill than take the effort to change their lifestyle and eating habits. This has been my experience over the last years.

not just from a fitness perspective but i see this with kids who are shall we say a little more energetic. one woman was so offended that our scout master said something at weekend campout. the kid is on 8 different pills that all relate to ADHD and OCD and he is only a year and 1/2(which i am wondering about her and the doctor b/c my doctor won't even give viola a OCD or ODD-oppositional defiant disorder diagnosis until she is at least 12 years old b/c its almost impossible to see the disorder truly before that age). every time the kid woke up and whined or cried she would shove pill in his mouth. just another poor example of the failing health of kids.MOST!!! of these pills, whether the child has a disorder or not, is taking an unhealthy effect on kid. some even known to cause GASP!! weight gain. go figure!!

>Kassia, did I read that right? The child is one and a half
>years old and on 8 different OCD/ADHD meds?

yep mom is not to stable either. the claim is now the dr. has removed some of the meds and i am really starting to see the "kid". he came to scouts the other day smiling. he is very attached to mom so he still has issues with being separated but scout master said he did very well during the scouts meeting while the parents were all upstairs being trained in CPR.

but OCD ADHD and ODD are not diagnosis they give this young but i was told to mind my business on that.well if they are receiving medicad i feel its my duty as a citizen to report a dr. whom i think is abusing a child and the system. ever since then the "well dr. took him off half the meds" claim was made. but i saw the pill bottles for myself and the poor kid just kept passing out that whole weekend. his brother(the actual boy scout with us) is at an unhealthy weight too but i see its from parenting and not b/c of him b/c he fights so hard to stay with us on activities.if it was b/c the kid was "lazy" he wouldn't be joining in the way he does.

my dr. says the best i could do for viola's adhd(since i no longer choose meds)is to make sure she is plenty active physically and stimulated mentally and emotionally. lots of trips to the big playground here. plus she likes to follow along with me for other workouts which is encouraging b/c i want her to be healthy and strong as possible and i know this helps with my anxieties(i too choose no meds for myself)so it has to help with viola's alot.

that is why i get so offended when fitness to ppl(well i should say family in this case)is scales and sizes b/c to us it was the best way to live through our disorders without popping a pill. a lot of those meds have known side effects for liver damage and never mind that i was a zombie for a long time myself no way could i run my household like that now. it was defiantly a lifestyle change that i am glad i did for myself and later after viola's diagnosis for her.

This I can definitely relate to. I just don't see where people get off saying the things they do. Seriously, I've had people make "eating disorder" comments to my face, of course they think there's nothing wrong with it, since they're inferring I'm too thin rather than too fat, but still. So I don't want to eat a white bread salami sandwich. Or the cookies, or the doritos, so what? I eat what makes me feel good and I let others do the same. I think it's easier for people who are ashamed of their own lifestyles to pretend like there's something wrong with mine. I could make a few "eating disorder" accusations myself, but I would never consider that acceptable.

Yep, that's me too. I always get asked to bring the veggies and fruit, which is fine with me because then I have something to eat!!!
