Non-Toxic hair color?

Gobias

Has anyone used a non-toxic hair color? I have been reading up on them lately and am just so confused...and scared! I have brown curly hair that can be dry/fuzzy. I color only to cover greys. I use do it yourself coloring because it is easy and it is what I am used to. However, I would like to try something without toxic chemicals. Here is what I have researched (but have not tried):

*Henna
*Hnectar
*Radico Colour me organic
*HairPrint
*Modena
*Naturtint
*Aveda

I am most interested in Henna, but most scared of Henna. It seems complicated and not fool-proof. I keep reading if your color turns too orange, do X and if your color turns too yellow, do Y, etc. I don't want to deal with trying to become a chemist and fix my hair color if something goes wrong. I am also finding that the instructions assume you know how to do the process, rather than assuming it is your first time. (i.e. how do I know if I need Indigo? What is Indigo? How do I know how much of each item to use? I don't want to guess on hair color! etc).

I looked into the other items, but a lot of complaints is that they don't cover greys, but rather just tint them lightly. The only reason I color my hair is to cover the greys - not to highlight them. Another complaint seems to be the color doesn't last very long at all. I realize that by not using chemicals, the product may not last as long, but don't feel like going through the process only to have it wash out within the week.

Any experience, pros or cons, with non-toxic hair color? Thanks!

Hi, Gobias. This is a great post; I would love to hear about others opinions/experiences with any of these as well. I have been interested in experimenting with Henna too - but I feel very much the same way. Looking forward to any responses. Thanks for posting!

I have my hair colored professionally at an organic salon every four weeks, but I just purchased the Color Reviving Gloss, Root Touch Up, and Styling Cream from Madison Reed. So far, I've used only the styling cream and I love it! For reference, I have dark brown, thin, fine hair. I'll let you know what I think about the other products after I've tried them.

I get mine done at the Aveda Academy, as I cannot really afford the salon. The students do an excellent job if you have 4.5 hours (long hair) to spare. My hair when highlighted has a tendency to go gold which looks terrible on my skin tone, so I have to get toner. At a regular salon, my hair colour goes over $235 easily.
I don't personally recommend Henna unless you are willing to sacrifice gloss/sheen (or you are under 28 or so & have very natural gloss). It will cover grey, but I thought it made my hair look pretty one dimensional and dull. Everyone's hair is different of course, but I have seen this result with most women I know. Also, once Henna is on there, most stylists will not want to work with your hair as the results might be too unpredictable.

You can also check out Green Circle salons.

Best of luck.

Great! I would love to know as well. Your hair colour in your photo looks really good & I have very fine (but an abundance of) hair as well.
I'm scheduled for a touch-up next Tuesday, so I'll probably use the brush-on root cover-up this weekend, but I don't expect to use the gloss for a couple more weeks. I absolutely LOVE the styling creme! With my order, I received samples of the shampoo and conditioner, and I really, really liked those. I intend to order some shampoo and conditioner when they send me an email with a discount code. I'll be sure to let you know what I think about the color products. :)

I have always been curious about henna. I am blond, my roots come in as dark blond, and the longer my hair grows, the blonder it gets. I attribute that to nature's salon of *sweat and sun* though. I think if I use henna, its going to turn my hair strawberry colored or red, and then what do I do?

I have used Herbacuticals Naturcolor for years. This is NOT Naturtint, they are completely different. The color I use is 10N or 9N depending what's at my local Lakewinds store. The N stands for neutral. What I like about this haircolor is you can mix it with other colors, or use a small amount for touch-ups and save the rest. Its never damaged my hair and sometimes I think my hair is the worst ever, maybe because of the sweat, etc. Its never bronzed out my hair either. I usually always just do root touch-ups only, the rest of my hair stays blond, so that also tells me that this stuff is permanent. (I use organic color-safe shampoo also, so that helps I'm sure.

As far as chemicals go, they all have it. I've looked at so many organic brands, only to find the worst offenders in every last one of them. There is one company that is developing a product that naturally turns your hair back to its original color Why I settled on Naturcolor is they use the very least in chemicals, no ammonia, no smell, perfect blond color and I don't freak out with my ridiculous fragile hair.

There is a company that is developing a product that naturally restores your hair color, which is called Hairprint, but they don't have anything yet for blonds.

I have brown curly longish hair and have it colored using no-ammonia professional haircolor - I am over 50% gray, and just switched to the no-ammonia when my hair started feeling very coarse. I can tell a difference already with the no-ammonia. There's also a post color conditioner with the brand she uses that is wonderful!

I used to do my color at home using an auburn color since my hair pulls to the red side, but had to give it up when I went so gray :) Whatever you choose, be careful to only do your roots, and pull the color through to the ends once every 3-4 colorings or you will fry your hair.

I'm going to have to try that root touchup with Madison Reed - is it easy to match their colors? I've been using the L'Oreal stuff and it's hard to find around here for some reason. They have that spray touch up in a can from L'Oreal that they are pushing that I don't really like, it flakes!

I used the MR root touch-up powder this past weekend and was extremely pleased. It's so easy to apply and it stays put. As far as color matching, I believe MR has a contact button on their website that will permit you to ask for assistance in choosing a color. :)

I am very allergic to any kind of hair dye so I Gold Bond anti itch lotion and I put it all over my head before I use Natural Instincts in black. My hair is very long, thick and grows so fast that I have to do the roots every two weeks.
