No Barbell

I don't own a barbell. I have been doing all of my videos with dumbbells 5 lb. - 15 lbs. each. Do I need to invest in a barbell?

If so, can anyone make a recommendation as to which one to buy and what the cost should be. Also, I have no idea what I should able to handle. How much do barbells weigh? How much weight should I put on? I am currently doing squats, lunges, etc. with 30 lbs.

Any comments would be appreciated.

You probably don't NEED a barbell. I did the PS series for months before I bought a barbell, but when I did get that barbell, it felt like a different workout. I don't know if it was a harder workout, but it added variety, and kept me interested in the videos I had already been doing for so long. I purchased the barbell from a local sporting goods store and it only cost $19.99 for the bar. The weights are not that much either. To start off, you probably won't want much more than one pair of 2 1/2 lb. plates, 5 lb. plates, and 10 lb. plates. This is similar to what comes with the BodyPump barbell set that sells for a lot more. I'm not sure how much the bar weighs, but it must be a few lbs.
Hope this helps, Laura

I did the PS series for several months before I felt the need to try hubby's barbell. I think as you progress to heavier weights, you'd want one. My bar alone weighs 13 pounds.

I currently do not have a barbell but am seriously looking around. For the past month or so I've been doing Power Hour solely using my dumb bells ( 8-25#'s). I can manage but I'd really like the barbell for the squats and lunges.
I don't know where you live however, I went on walmart.com and found a 55# set for about $20. The one Cathe uses(Troy Lite) I've found at fitness1st.com for $49. Also in my area(Wisc) I found a 110# pound set at Dicks Sporting Goods and Play it Again Sports for about $50 . I think I'm going to get the 110# for the variety of weights.
Hope this helps!:D Susan

I really don't like barbells, but of course, I have one!! They seem to make most exercises easier for me if that is motivation for you!! I really like my Troy Lite barbell. I know you can purchase the barbell with a plate package pretty cheap. I did not purchase the weights, as I already had some. However, I will have to purchase more now because my barbell with all my weights only holds 55lbs. Also, the troy weights are rubberized I believe. That is nice.

I own a Troy Lite Barbell and loves it. It's the same one Cathe uses in her Power Hour. One thing to consider when buying a barbell and working in at home is the length of the bar. Troy Lite is about 5' which is a lot easier in smaller/home workout. The plates which comes with it is rubber coated which is nice on your floor. The bar weighs only 5 lbs (which meant it is hollow); therefore cannot handle a lot of weight -- maximum of 80 lbs. Which is plenty for most women...

I'd go for the troy Lite. It's a set you can't go wrong with. At fitness1st.com, the set costs $49.95. It includes the 5 lb bar, 2 collars, 4 2.5 lb, 2 5 lb and 2 7.5 lb plates. You can always order more if you need it.

I'm sure you'll love it as much as the rest of us do :)
