News on New Protein Bars

Hi everybody-

For those of you who are protein bar connoisseurs, I just got the scoop on a new flavor bar coming out from Designer Whey on their "Candy Bar" line of protein bars.

Currently they have 3 flavors in this new line.. the Detour Bar, the U-Turn Bar, and the One Way Bar. The fourth new one that is coming out is called the "Joy Ride" bar.. Its going to have almonds and coconut in it. Should be in stores sometime next month.

I have really enjoyed these bars.. the label reads fairly well.. 30 gms of protein and about 300 calories/bar. But the best thing about them is that they use Splenda instead of Malitol or sorbitol as their sweetening system.. which means, no upset tummies or bloating!

For those of you who haven't tried them, I would highly recommend giving them a taste, esp. the Detour Bar... its kind of like a Snickers!!

Sorry for sounding like an informercial, but I am all for something that can help supplement for additional protein that actually tastes good!!!

Lynn

Do they have soy? I'm sensitive to soy, and it's very difficult to find anything out there without the magical ingredient.

Hi Jenne

Yep, unfortunately they do have soy protein isolate and soy lecithin.

Can you tolerate it in small amounts? It was listed towards the middle of the ingredient dec so there may not be alot present as they use whey protein as the bulk of the protein in the bars.

That is a bummer.. so many supplemental type protein foods do have soy or soy by products in them!

I am always on the lookout for this kind of stuff.. if I find any that are soy free, I'll let you know!

Lynn

What kind of stores are these bars found in - the GNC or the Whole Foods (I'm in MD), for example? I'm interested to hear they are sweetened with Splenda - if you read the lables on many of the so-called healthy nutrition bars, their sugar content is outrageous!

Hi Susan-

I have found them at GNC, Target, and Walgreens. I know the Detour flavor (my fave!) comes in a smaller size that is 200 cals, 20 gm protein, and the larger size that is 300 cals/30gm protein.

I am with you on the Splenda.. its so awesome.. a much better alternative to Nutrasweet and some of the other ones out there.

I might give it a try. I once had a reaction to the soy in a hotdog (!) that I didn't even know had soy in it. It wasn't until the reaction started that I thought to check the label. It's a mild intolerance that seems to be dependent on the amount of soy I eat, but it's not comfortable.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for non-soy protein bars! I've gotten so I don't even check that area any more. I suppose I ought to try to make my own someday.

Trader Joes carries the Odyssey bar which is from the same maker but has less sugar than the Detour, U-Turn, etc.

Sometimes you can find Detour Bars at Rite Aid, but they are pricey.

Colleen

I found them at easypricematch.com on line for about 1/2 of what they cost elsewhere. They are more pricey than Cliff bars but perhaps I need to round out my diet more. LOL

If you girls find them cheaper than easyprice, would you let me know? I got the Detour and U-turn combo set, but they are still 50 cents higher than my Cliff bars when on sale. :p
I found the Detour bar to be sweeter tasting than the Cliff and the Luna's I buy. I like it that they have more protein though.

Hi Briee,
The carbohydrate count on the Detour bar is 25g and the U-Turn is
26g.
Looking at my Almond Fudge Clif bar, it has 44g carbohydrate and also lists "other carbohydrate 19g"

I have only tried one Detour bar and haven't got into the U-Turn yet. The Detour does remind you of a Sniker bar. Just like the ad says, I was thinking this really can't be good for me. LOL
So many of the bars I have tried, I threw them away after one bite because they tasted so bad. IMHO. I can't stand a chalky or even a vitamin tasting anything. Ugh.

I like peanut butter so I may try the One Way bar pretty soon.

The Clif bar that I mentioned has 300mg of potassium while the Detour has 150mg, U-Turn 450mg.
Hope this helps. :D

Wanda thanks so much. I'm looking for bars with no more than 2 to 4 grams of Carbo's. I love the biochem honey peanut butter lite bars and think bars and they have 2g carbohydrates and 0 sugar. They use glycerin which reacts differently in the body then carbohydrates and sugars, it doesn't seem to affect blood sugar (glycogen) levels. Therefore I don't go on the sugar high and crash that I seem to go on with these other bars. I bought a met RX bar the other day and nearly gagged and I can tolerate a pretty bad tasting bar - these were terrible!!!!

Briee

Briee,
I only eat the low carb bars too. The Atkins mocha crunch is good, and the Cookies and Cream by EAS is too. I tried a Z carb candy bar yesterday (chocolate almond) and it was pretty good. Now if I could only find LeCarb ice cream around here I'd be happy.

Dawn

Briee, I hear you on the Met RX bars. I took one bite and that was it for me!I found it too dry and vitaminy tasting.
I'm having a very hard time figuring out the protein/carb thing.
I know there are good and bad carbohydrates, but to know the right amount of the good ones is another story for me.

And to find the perfect protein bar with the right carb ratio that actually tastes good is very hard indeed. That is my plight anyways. :D
Dawn I will have to check out the Atkins and the EAS bars you mentioned. :9

Hi Lynn,
I've gabbed too much here on your thread about different protein bars. I neglected to thank you for the heads up on the "Joy Ride" bars. I will definately try them when the come out. Joy is my middle name. Maybe I can tell my friends that they named this bar after me.
They will believe it too. Not! LOL

Thanks for starting this thread. :D

Hey Wanda-

I don't think you "gabbed" too much at all!! Heck, I have gotten some great info from you and the rest of the crew!!.. Thanks a bunch for sharing! :}

Anyways, I did try the "One Way" bar last week.. its the one that is supposed to be a knock off of a Reese's Peanut butter cup.. It was OK. The Peanut Butter flavor wasn't as strong as I would have liked. (But then, I could eat a whole jar of peanut butter in one sitting!)
It was still pretty good though, much better than some of the other bars that are peanut butter flavored. But the "off taste" was minimal.

For those of you who aren't looking for a really low carb bar, I would also recommend "The Zone" bars.. Those are very good.. They are around 200 calories, with 16 gms of protein.. The chocolate peanut butter and the Fudge graham are awesome. I have seen great prices on the six pack of them at Target.

Thanks again for all of the info. If anybody reading this, gets to try the Joy Ride bar before I do, please post your culinary review!

Lynn

Isn't it true that the body can only absorb/use 20 grams of protein at a time? and that the rest is converted into fat?
