NEW RUNNERS JULY 2010!

Good morning ladies! I did a three mile beach walk with Sylvia. I took Ben. The nice thing about having three dogs is you almost have the perfect dog for any given occasion. Powerwalks where we might meet other dogs are Ben's forte. He also did some seagull chasing/ocean swimming intervals just to keep himself in tip-top shape.

The advil and coffee (and a shower) worked! I perked back up and went riding. I also rode a (relatively) new horse bareback to the beach and trotted and cantered. This doesn't sound so exciting but I have ridden very few horses bareback since I broke my ankle badly riding bareback 12 years ago. Anyway, it was a good emotional challenge for me and the horse spooked twice but I stayed topside. After a couple more rides, I think I'll be comfortable taking him out bareback alone.

Cindi - I know you were going to Niagara Falls but what parts of western NY did you see? I was born in Ithaca and grew up near Corning (about 1/2 hour from there anyway) so I'd love to know. It is really gorgeous country. Letchworth Falls State Park is definitely worth a stop too. I should have mentioned that earlier I guess. What's TurboFire all about?

Tricia - I love Power Hour. I don't own it so I only get to do it when I catch it on FitTV but I really like it.

Jane - Good on you for pushing through and getting your 80 laps done!

Alisha - How are you doing?

I need to choose a workout for this morning. I'm leaning towards BBL Sculpt but nothing's set in stone yet. I work a ride this evening.

Lisa

Hi ladies - spin class last night was good and challenging. My asthma kicked in at the end when I walked outside. It must have been 100% humidity as it started to rain and was still close to 90 degrees. The air conditioned car helped a lot. :)

Thank you for the welcome back!

I'm going to the podiatrist this morning and will let you know what she says. Doing TF later tonight.

Tricia - It's hot here too, should be better tomorrow they say. Brainwashed newbies sounds like fun!

Jane - great job getting in 80 laps. That sounds like so much swimming to me! Do you listen to music? And how do you not lose count? I think I would need an abacus at one end of the pool to mark of laps. LOL!

Hi Alisha! How are you feeling?

Lisa - bareback riding sounds so wonderful. I love horses. We were staying in Cleveland so one day we drove to Niagara Falls which would be through the very west edge of PA and then around Lake Erie up to Buffalo. Which I guess isn't too far into NY but it was still beautiful. Then another day we drove south into PA to Falling Water which is 90 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Super hilly/mountainous there. I don't know exactly what qualifies as a mountain, but they seemed like mountains to me considering I live on the prairie. I told Pete I think we should go back as a family (it was just me and the boys last week) and explore more of western NY and PA. He was supposed to join us in Buffalo but had a medical issue (LONG STORY) and couldn't fly for a few days. He's ok now.

Turbo Fire is a new set of workouts from Beach Body featuring Chalene Johnson who also did Turbo Jam and Chalene Extreme (CLX). TJ are intermediate cardio workouts with some sculpting routines and they all use kickboxing and some dance in the workouts. CLX is her weight system which includes 3 weight workouts a week plus some interval workouts. TF is her new set that is high intensity cardio. It includes some HIIT workotus and more intense Kickboxing style workouts like the TJ workouts she did. It also includes some sculpting workouts but they are short (about 30 minutes). It's a 12 week plan (20 if you get the deluxe set). I took her 12 week rotation and tweaked it for myself to include spin class and to incorporate the deluxe workouts for more variety.

I'm hoping to add some joggling into the mix at some point but last week my heel was hurting just from walking so we'll see.

Hi Everyone!!

I'm going on a 4 mile run today. It's going to be a hot one, but no rain in the forecast so at least the humidity will be low. I'm already drinking tons of water!

Lisa ~ I'm really enjoying your pictures on facebook. I have always wanted to go horseback riding on the beach. I've only ridden once in my life but it was a great experience. I asked for a very docile horse and got one but we did manage a canter. Good job on facing and overcoming your emotional challenge!!

Cindi ~ No, I don't listen to music when I swim, in fact I don't even listen to music when I run. I used to and then just got out of the habit. I actually use an abacus of sorts to count the laps. I find pinestraw and use each one as 10 laps. So I do 10 laps...pick up one piece of pinestraw and transfer it from one side of the pool to the other. See...instance abacus! :) I wanted to do 100 laps but I just wasn't feeling yesterday.

Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well with your appointment today.

Hi to Tricia and Alisha. What are you gals up to today?

ouchie my ear

Yesterday I did Low Max and that went well. But, afterwards everything went downhill. I did everything I was supposed to do (chores, picked up tape at Fry's, video on site, picked up Mom after work, stopped at grocery store on the way home.) but I felt awful. I had serious grumpy-itis and then in the evening I got a horrible ear ache in my left ear. I took some ibuprofen and had some cantaloupe before bed even though I normally don't eat before I go to sleep. I feel better this morning but I'm taking it easy. I will probably do some yoga and maybe a boxing workout this afternoon.

I don't know what caused the Alisha-The-Grouch. It could have been a waffle I tried (Gluten free) or hormones or lack of water or just a bug that later became an ear ache. I think it was the ear ache. I don't get those very often. I woke up all congested in my nose. My face looks puffy. I'm drinking lots of water and eating spicy food.

Tricia- I don't have Cardio Kicks, is it fun? How does it compare to Cathe's other kick box workouts?

Cindi- I experienced that hot humid weather when I was working in Orlando at Walt Disney World. There was one day that was 108 deg. and 98 percent humidity. It was like walking through a great big damp towel.

Jane- I hope your run was fun. I'm lucky, out here in CA we don't get a lot of humidity.

Lisa- I think you are really brave to try bare back riding again since you had that injury. :)

Hi again - I liked this podiatrist much better than the first one. The one I saw back in Feb. said I had insertional achilles tendonitis and a bone spur. He recommended PT and orthotics and Aleve. I did the PT route and Aleve and after cutting back on running, the tendonitis is gone. So that's good. Never did orthotics.

Now I still have this bone spur. The new podiatrist confirmed that my tendon is in fine shape and she called the bone spur a Haglund's Deformity which I have heard of before too. They are usually on the back/center of the heel but are sometimes on the side which is where mine is. She doesn't recommend any kind of insert or orthotic but wanted to insted find a way to keep the bump from getting aggravated when I run or walk. We tried a couple wraps which didn't help. Then she called the local running store and talked with the owner about my situation and sent me to him to find a shoe that doesn't have a heel cup.

She said surgery is a last option because it could hurt the tendon and it takes a long time to recover.

The shoe guy was very helpful - we talked about the vibrams which he didn't recommend since I've been running in a neutral shoe (I told him about the blisters too). Saucony makes a minimalist shoe but it still had a rigid cup around the heel so we settled on a pair of Nike Free Run. They are the most cushioned/supportive of the Nike Free line but still have an upper with no heal cup, it's just soft fabric.

So now I have the ok to start again but really slow - as if I'm learning to run all over again. I'm going to try a 20 minute walk run tomorrow since it should be cooler.

Hi Jogglers!

Lisa - Glad you felt better and were able to get your ride in last evening! I would never work out if I had to choose one on a day to day basis! LOL! I'm such a wembler that I could never make up my mind and I'd give up!

Jane - 80 laps yesterday was good enough! I would think (at least for me) after the first 1 lap, the rest would be bonus! Ha, ha, ha, ha! You should see me flounder around in a pool! It's hysterical! Anyway, good for you! Hope your run went well today!

Alisha - I'm very familiar with Grump-itis! I don't know the cause either, but it can really hit me some days! I'm glad you feel better today! I goofed! It was Kick Max on the agenda, not Cardio Kicks. I've done both. CK is more intensive because she does more cardio between the drills to keep the HR up. KM starts out more mellow with drills, but intensifies after that and she throws a segment of blasts in there about 3/4 through! THEN, you do leg conditioning! Ouch!

Cindi - This weather has been so bad for asthma! I'm glad I haven't had to get an outdoor workout in this week! I don't think I would have gotten far! I'm glad the tendon is fine! I hope the Nike Frees work well for you! Good luck with your first run in them! I really hope you can work this out so you can run without having to have surgery! That sounds like it would not only be painful, but very frustrating with such a long recovery. Besides, I don't like the risks with the possibility of damaging the tendon. I'm sure you don't too!

Everyone stay hydrated and cool! Our temps are supposed to start dropping back into the 80s tomorrow. I hope it's not quite so humid too!

I can't remember who recommended that Sporkful podcast, but I'm totally hooked! I'm craving waffles now since I just finished listening to that particular episode!

Well, I'm going to try to get up just a tad earlier tomorrow and fit in the whole of BM2. I think I'll cut the cardio segments down if I don't manage to get up when I should and not do the abs until the evening. We'll see what happens.

I've rambled enough today! Have a great evening ladies! Happy trails!

Hi ladies!

Tricia - Kickmax is so hard. You are right, it starts out feeling kind of do-able, but then the blasts come and the leg conditioning just kills me! That workout is one of my favorites though. It may have been me who suggested the Sporkful - I listen to it too and really like it! My 11 year old (Paul) likes to listen too. Another good one is Spilled Milk. It's a man and a women who focus on one food item at a time and cook it up and eat it and discuss. They post the recipes on their website too.

Last night I was supposed to do Fire 45 EZ but accidentally did Fire 45 (NOT EZ). It was really fun and I loved the music and moves in this one. Lots of kicking in this one - but all very simple kicks. With the fast pace of these workouts, Chalene keeps the moves simple so you can get the intensity and speed she wants. That makes them easy to learn even if they are fast moving.

Good Afternoon!

My run went well yesterday. The heat wasn't too bad and there was a slight breeze. I wore my camelback so I had water available if I needed it. I took it easier than I usually do.

Today it's going to be a beautiful 99 degrees!!

Here's my workout for this afternoon!

Old Man 35
35 Box Jumps
35 Ball Slams
35 Squats
35 Jumping Pull ups
35 Swings
35 Walking Lunges (each leg)
35 Thrusters
35 Push Press
35 Squat Jumps
135 Rope Jumps
Bonus - 1 Mile Run

Alisha - Every so often I have to let Jane-The-Grouch out. It could be for a variety of reason but she doesn't stay around long. Hope you feel better today.

Cindi - I'm glad you like the new podiatrist. I hope the new shoe helps.

Tricia - Now I want to meet you and see you flounder around the pool! ;) I floundered more than once during that 80 laps swim. My sister for some reason had a terrible fear of swimming (she used to always swim as a kid) so we finally got her in the pool and had her swim in the shallow end by the end of the hour, she was swimming laps in the deep end.

Hi Lisa!

Darn it I've tried to type this three times. Pip deleted it once when she tried to "help". I deleted it once by accidentally hitting the backspace button and the entire post disappeared. Here's the short version!

Didn't workout yesterday. Who cares. I walked three miles and working a ride is a workout anyway.

I did a fun ride and BBL Sculpt today.

Tricia - I can't stick with a rotation at all. I look at the menu item for today and say, "I don't feel like doing that" and walk off.

Alisha - Hope you feel better!

Jane - Love the pinestraw abacus.

Cindi - Lots of gorgeous country up there. Falling Water is very near my parents place and where I went to high school and college. Mountains are relative. There are some good ones there.

Signing off before I delete this stupid thing again.
Lisa

I did LIC Cardio premix this morning. I'm watching my carbs but darn it those cherries are so good! I'm doing video editing all day. I am feeling better today. That was so bizarre, I haven't had an ear ache in a long time.

Cindi- Ooh, I will have to check out Spilled Milk. Also, Gardenfork radio can be fun, its sort of all over with food, gardening and bee keeping.

Lisa- I make up a rotation but invariably change it due to weather or whether or not I wanna.

Tricia- I'm not a good swimmer. My butt is a built in floatation device and I tend to flip over at the wrong time and swallow water. Kick Max sounds like a killer workout, great now I'm looking at my credit card and I think I need Income-Max first:p

Jane- You are going to work out in the afternoon and it is 99 deg. You are have more guts than me!

Alisha ~ I lied it's only 97 degrees but it feels like 98 degrees (who can tell the difference?). The humidity is only 32% though! :) I kinda like it when it's this hot because it's too hot to rain and the humidity is low.

Glad you're feeling better today!

Cindi - Thanks! Now, I'm going to have to get Spilled Milk, too! LOL! I"m getting addicted to podcasts! Man, TF sounds like so much fun! I'm glad you're enjoying your workouts!

Jane - That workout looks totally intense! You go, girl! I have no pool access, so you'll have to come up here and teach me in the ocean! I want to be like your sister!

Lisa - Oh! You poor thing! I've done that before and it really is frustrating to the point that you don't even want to post after that! Hope Pip doesn't think he's a writer now! LOL! I'm glad you're enjoying your rides!

Alisha - i'm glad you're feeling better! What a weird thing to happen! I wanted to flip out today at one of our attorneys. This one in particular is just so disrespectful of my knowledge and it just pisses me off so badly sometimes! I wish I could have done it and blamed it on being sick! He can be such a a** ! I know, I don't ever talk like this, but this afternoon was just so annoying!

Anyway, I laughed at your description of your swimming! I know what you mean about needing income! Last night I had a dream that I was offered a lucrative position with another company, but the salary offered was only $10,000 a year! I can't believe it, but I actually considered it! Thank goodness it was only a dream! That would be so much of a pay cut for me, it would be devastating!

Kick Max was great! My legs were still feeling it this morning so I cut Body Max 2 by leaving out the blasts and leg work and doing the cardio combos, upper body work, warm up, cool down and stretch! That was enough!

Tomorrow is supposed to be Rhythmic Step. I love this one, so it should be fun, if I'm not tired! I was exhausted this morning, too, so I knew I couldn't do the leg work anyway!

I'm looking into tabata workouts and have decided to use some of the routines from bodyrock tv and a new website another Cathlete suggested called myomytv to get ideas. I'm loving what I'm seeing! I can't wait to try this out! I'll let you know how I do and what my results look like!

I sold my old Reebok Step today. I posted it on Craig's List and I met another workout enthusiast. She's done P90X, but has never heard of Cathe, so I told her to check out her website! She actually offered to loan me her P90X DVDs! I'd like to try it sometime, so we shall see!

It's so nice to have everyone together again!

Hi ladies!

Last night I joggled for 2 miles and then did Fire 55 EZ. Another really fun workout with GREAT music!

My joggle was good - I would walk a block and then jog 2. The shoes did not bother my heel at all but my feet were a little stiff this morning so I know I will have to work up to speed and distance gradually as these shoes are really minimalist (for me at least).

So I am cautiously optomistic. :)

Jane - 99, 98, 97 - it's all HOT to me! I would love low humidity like that though. It's been super steamy here. We'll get humid/hot, then a storm sprouts up, then it's steamy hot.

Pip - please stop helping mom with her typing. Ask her for a typewriter so you can practice on your own for a while. ;)

Lisa - I've done that backspace thing too many times to count - makes me crazy! We are big architecture fans so Falling Water was a must see place for us. It was amazing. We also went to see Kentuck Knob and the view from there was breathtaking.

Alisha - I think you will like Spilled Milk. Thanks for the tip on Gardenfork. I unfortunately kill almost anything I'm trying to grow. I did not inherit my mother's green thumb.

Tricia - I don't blame you for cutting BM2 short after KM. Love Rythmic Step!

Good Afternoon,

It's still hot here today - currently 95 with a heat index of 105.

My sister and I are doing this workout tonight. One of us will do the workout below and the other will be pulling the sled dog with weight. When the person is finished with the workout below, we will switch and continue for 30 minutes or whomever pukes or passes out first!

Set up 2 markers (I will go the length of my yard).

Start with medicine ball at point A and sandbag at point B.

Sprint from point A to B with medicine ball in hands.
Do 15 med ball slams
Sandbag bear hug carry from point B to A and back to B (non-stop)
Overhead walking lunges with med ball from point B to A
10 push ups at point A

Cindi ~ Congrats on your joggle last night and that the shoes seem to be working. Good job! I remember the humidity up there. It's very different from down here. I suppose because of all the industry, cars, etc that you have up there.

Lisa ~ Poor Pip! I agree with Cindi, get the little gal a typewriter to play with. :p

Tricia ~ I would love to come up there and teach you how to swim. That would be fun!! I'm not sure about the ocean though. I think a pool would be a better place to start. Maybe if we get to Charleston next year, we can hit the hotel pool!!

Tabata workouts are fun!! Do you have a Gymboss Timer? It's the best for Tabata and interval workouts.

Hi Alisha - Hope you're doing well today!!

Hi ladies,
Pip Squeak is glad you all agree with her. She's a very smart girl though and wants a laptop of her own. She said that typewriters are passe. She's actually bumped a couple of keys off of my laptop before while "helping". I put her outside before I tried to respond today.

I worked a ride this morning and it rained almost the entire time. The group wanted to go though and it wasn't storming so we went. Then we had to roll big round haybales in the wet through the mud. Fun, fun. My shower felt sooo good.

I want to workout but I haven't decided what I'm up for yet.

Jane - Whew! I'm tired just listening. It must be fun to workout with your sister. You can teach me to swim too. I sink. The only thing remotely bouyant on me is my butt and that doesn't really help.

Cindi - Glad you had a good joggle. I hope those shoes work out for you.

Tricia - I almost gave up entirely on posting. It got shorter and shorter each time. Good luck with Rhythmic Step and tabata.

Alisha - Cherries are fruit so I don't think you need to count them as carbs :)

Lisa

LOL! Maybe Pip would do better with an IPad. :)

Jane - that workout is crazy! But it sounds kind of fun too.

Afternoon everyone!

Boss let us out early today! Yippee!

Cindi - Nice joggle! Yes, training with minimalist footwear takes time. You have to work into them slowly so you don't injure those tiny little foot muscles which start screaming at you because they've done nothing for many, many years! I'm glad the shoes didin't bother your bone spur! It sounds promising!

Jane - Your workouts sound tougher with each one you post! Do you and your sister compare reps when you're done to see who did more? That would be fun for the competition! Charleston sounds good if all goes well! If not, we may have to get together next time I'm in FL! I don't have a Gymboss, but I have an app on my iPhone that does the same thing and I can use my own music with it, too! I don't think you have that option with the Gymboss.

Lisa - The rolling hay in the wet and mud does not sound like it was a good time at all! Yuck! It was quite a workout though I'll bet! I agree, too, that an iPad would be perfect for Pip! Won't have to worry about all those tiny keys!

I printed out some blank calendars today so I can scribble around my own, and very first, created rotation in pencil until I get the mix right before transferring it all to the Workout Manager. I'm really excited about this! I haven't been so excited since I first started using Cathe DVDs and realized I absolutely loved her workouts!

So, is anyone else stressing out about being without the forum and WM next Tuesday and Wednesday? I don't know if I'll be able to handle it!

Alisha - Where are you today? Hope you are well!

Hi,

I had a change of plans, nasty IBS all night and then I had to drive my Mom to work (2 hour trek) she is not ready to drive herself, she still periodically has low blood pressure and half passes out. I'm feeling better, but you know with this gut stuff sometimes I try something and then it doesn't work and I pay. So, today is an easy yoga day before bed. Tomorrow, I plan to go for an interval jog. I planned on having 4 jogs this week and I'm only getting two. But, hey thats two more than nothing, right?

I'm planning on seeing Despicable Me sometime this weekend. Hopefully, today but maybe on Sunday.

Alisha

Alisha - I'm so sorry you're having issues with your IBS! That is miserable! I went through that a long time ago, but mine was stress related and cleared up. It was horrible. I hope you are much better by tomorrow! Yoga and Despicable Me sound like good medicine!

2 runs are better than none!

I hope your mom's BP levels off and she's feeling better soon, too! Let us know how the movie is. It has to be good with Steve Carell!

I did Bum Bum Live this evening.

Alisha - Sorry you aren't feeling good. Hope you feel better soon.

Tricia - It wasn't fun at all. They are 600 or 700# haybales, I think and it takes two or three of us to roll them. When it rains, you are rolling through liquid horse poo and its just a nasty job. You wind up covered because the bale winds up covered. Ick. It is a great shoulder, back and hamstring workout though. I also swear a lot during the process. :)

Cindi - Pip was reading over my shoulder and has decided that she definitely wants and Ipad. She isn't 100% sure what it is but says it sounds like just the thing for the literate pup on the run.
