New Runners February 2010

Hi Ladies,

I'm back in the "real world" and doing ok right now. I'm not working out today but will start back tomorrow. I've been eating all kinds of crap that is making me not feel very good.

This week I'm starting my old running pattern of 3 days a week (long run on Sunday 6+ miles, 5 miles on Wednesday and 3 miles on Friday). I am looking at the racing calendars and will start racing again by doing a 5K on 2/27. I have a 10K race scheduled for March 27. I'm so excited to be running and racing again.

Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers. Mom is doing well. We are hauling her off to the beach at the end of the month of a couple days of R&R. I can't wait!!

Tricia - 4x20 is a 20 minute progression run (start slow and gradually increase speed) then a 5' walk break - repeat that 4 times. I have all the CC's - which one are you doing?
I bet you were muscular back then! WOW!

Jane - good to see you! It's good to have a plan for running/racing, isn't it? The beach sounds wonderful! I would love to get somewhere warm for a couple of days.

Hi Jane!

Glad you're back and your Mom is doing well! The beach is so restorative! That will be nice! Happy running this week! I'm sure you'll start feeling better now that you're back on your own turf and more in control of what you eat!

Cindi - That doesn't sound too bad, but i think I would poop out before I could get to round 4, probably round 3! I have CC 1-6 and I also have the original Vols. 1 & 2. I was thinking of doing Vol. 1 original and revised back to back for comparison.

Hi ladies,

Jane ~ Good to see you again! A couple of days at the beach together sounds like a great idea. I'm sure it can't come soon enough.

Tricia and Cindi ~ How were your runs? I'm getting rain/slush/snow here so getting on the treadmill to do CC6 or 7 (haven't done either of them all the way through yet).

Alisha ~ Hi! How are you doing?

I did Providence yesterday morning and a 4 mile walk in the afternoon. Today I did Namaste yoga (and did my first crane balance!!) and an hour of bellydance with someone named Aubre on AllStar Workouts. I really liked her. I usually do Shimmy but actually liked the dancing with Aubre even more. I will likely be iced in tomorrow and Sunday (without internet access!) so will probably do yoga each day, an upper body workout tonight or tomorrow and Gym Style Legs the day after.

Hope everyone is staying warm, safe and dry. It is truly nasty here.
Lisa

Okay, I did V7 - intense, intense. The longer intervals in V6 scare me . I'm such a weinie. I'll do it outside one day. Now to get back up the hill before the road freezes.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Lisa

Oh, Lisa! Stay safe! We're out of the weather for once! It's supposed to stay down from southern New Jersey to NC. We're not in any trouble! We had ours last year! No less than 12" every weekend from December through February! It was so bad, we had no place to shovel the snow!

I'm saying prayers and sending safe vibes to all of my friends in the line of fire this weekend!

Cindi and I are trying to coordinate a run for tomorrow! My DH has class, so I'm going out for a run by myself :(

I'm having a tough time getting used to him having night and weekend classes. Even though he's not working, I still don't see him much. It's not that I'm dependent on him, but I miss his company!

Anyway, stay safe and warm!

That is the sneaky thing about these runs - they don't seem so bad, until you are waist deep into one and struggling to finish! 20 minutes isn't too bad though and then you get a break. I think doing Vol 1 back to back would be fun. I'll be thinking of you then. ;)

I'll be busy this weekend - see you all on Monday.

Good Morning

I decided to take yesterday off. My left knee was a bit  I will do step jam after work. Next week I am going to San Francisco for MacWorld and I plan to workout and eat normally. Gluten free means brown bagging it. It also means I'm being super good this week because I hate feeling fat and seeing people I haven't seen in a year. Its not good for the old ego.:p

I went to the co-op yesterday and had a fun time selecting weird and wonderful veggies. They have purple carrots and potatoes

Tentative rotation for the following week:
Today: Step Jam
Sunday: MMA KB
Monday: Jog
Tuesday: Circuit Blast
Wednesday: Jog
Thursday: off (traveling)
Friday: Jog (in Pacifica on the beach )
Saturday: Travel Fit

Tricia- I wish I could go for a run with you, but it looks like rain here. You know clothing sizes have changed so the size you used to wear very well might be the size you wear now, idk, just a thought. Don't worry, we'll keep you company!

Hi Cindi.

Jane- Welcome back! I am glad to see that your Mom is doing well.

Hi Lisa- Stay warm!

Sydney- if you're reading this, hi!

Hi Ladies!

Got it done this morning! 1 hour - 5 miles - double CC Vol. 1 and Vol. 1 original! Thanks for "coming along!"

Alisha - I like your rotation for this week!

I hadn't thought about clothing sizes changing that much! Either way, I'll still take the psychological effect!

Have a great weekend everyone! If you're in the path of that storm, stay warm and safe!

Hi Everyone! I got to workout today. :):):) The first workout in a couple of weeks. I did the following:

The Gauntlet
40 Walking Lunges (each leg)
Run 200m
35 KB Sumo Deadlift High Pulls
Run 200m
30 Squats
Run 200m
25 Kettlebells Swings
Run 200m
20 Ball Slams
Run 200m
15 Thrusters
Run 200m
10 Push ups
Run 200m
5 Squat Thrusts

Then did 100 sit ups in various forms.

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry today. We have temps in the 50's but it cloudy and damp.

Tricia ~ Yep...I'm sore but I got up this morning and ran/walked a 10K. I haven't run in a couple of weeks so it was rough but I got it done. I've got a 10K that I'm doing at the end of March so I'm getting in shape for that.

Lisa ~ Hope you're doing ok. Did you get lots of snow?

Cindi ~ Are you seeing Katharine Switzer? I read in another post that you were seeing the first woman who ran Boston.

Hi Alisha!

Hope everyone has a great Sunday. It felt good to go running this morning!

Hello everybody!

I went for a three mile hike, hills and all in the mist. My left knee is bothering me so I think I won't be running this week. Its like my leg is just not in alignment. Weird, I don't even know how I did it. Maybe I slept wrong.

Hi ladies,
The snow mostly missed us. We got lots of rain, some sleet and a couple inches of snow. Today I took my foster dog down to Asheville to meet a rescue from SC but my girlfriend (who had kept him for almost a week) decided that she couldn't live without him. So I turned around and brought him back :D. So he has his new forever home now and I'll still get to take him for runs with me.

Yesterday I did Pyramid Upper Body, Namaste yoga (dove) and an episode of Shimmy. Today I did Gym Style Legs - the whole thing. The floorwork part of it didn't annoy me like floorwork usually does either. I'm going to try to get on the treadmill tonight but no promises.

Jane ~ Most of the snow missed us. Glad you got a workout in. How are you feeling now?!?

Tricia ~ We dodged the bullet this time but are supposed to get more weather this week. Yee haw.

Cindi ~ That sounds like a great workout. How do the two versions of V1 compare? A lot of times I'll repeat a challenge or add in a challenge from another volume during a run.

Alisha ~ Sorry your knee is feeling wonky. Hope it gets better soon. There was an interesting piece on gluten-free cooking on the Splendid Table the other night. I thought of you. They were interviewing the author of a gluten-free baking cook book I think.

Lisa

Hi Jane! Wow! A 10K - good for you! You'll be ready for the one in March!

Hi Alisha! Sorry your knee is bothering you. Maybe a trip to the chiropractor? It may just be a bit out of alignment - if it doesn't straighten out on it's own anyway. I hope it does!

Lisa - Glad you didn't get hit too badly! I'm so happy your dog found a home! That's wonderful!

I ran again today. Didn't get out until after breakfast - actually almost noon. Wasn't really feeling it, but I went anyway and set my Nike sensor for 4 miles. I was running into a pretty good wind (didn't know it was so windy out) so I ended up walking 1/4 mile at about the halfway mark. Once I turned around, I was okay and ran the rest. So, 3.75 miles running and only .25 walking! Not bad! I think part of it was that I really wasn't in the mood, but I needed to do it after that piece of flourless chocolate cake I had last night!

Back to the rotation tomorrow! STS Disc 19 - 3 more weeks to my recovery week and prep for Meso 3!

Thanks for all the sympathy. I do appreciate it. My knee is feeling a little better but I'm going to adjust my rotation down to just walking, yoga, and plenty of baths with epsom salts.

Hi ladies! What a busy weekend we had. But lots of fun.

Honor had Cello all morning Saturday and part of the afternoon. She is playing at a local contest next saturday. She's doing a solo, duet, and quartet.

David was at a table tennis tournament all day Saturday. He won first place in his age group (12-13 yo) and second in the older age group (14-17). He was very excited! He's 12 but they let him play in both events - because he's just so dang good. :)

Then I had to get my run in and get ready for Sunday school.

Sunday I taught 5-6 graders. We were in the kitchen making food for the homeless that come each sunday afternoon. So we made Jambalaya, corn muffins, and king cakes for 40. That's a lot of work!

Then run again and we all went out to dinner for our Superbowl tradition of not watching. We went to P.F. Chang's great food. I thought of you Alisha- they have a gluten free menu.

I flipped my run on Sat/Sun in the interest of time. Saturday was 40 minutes slow, 10x100 sprints, then 20 minute progression. Sunday was supposed to be 4x20 minute progression but into the 3rd one, my heal was hurting so badly that I went to the pool and did 30 minutes of pool running to finish the workout. Do any of you have experience with pool running? It was my first time and was challenging, but I'm not sure I was doing it right. I just ran back and forth in the shallow end, but I think the 'official' method is to get a belt and 'run' in the deep end. I think I'm going to do that so I can keep running when my heal acts up.

I thought it was my achilles but after the session at the running store last week and more googling. I think it's more likely bursistis in my heal - right around where the achilles inserts into the heal. The pain is on the outside edge of my right heal. That's too low to be an achilles problem.

BUT - the treatment is the same, ice and stretching. I need to play around with a heal lift and my shoes to see if I can relieve the pressure there - I think that is why it flared up on Saturday. The shoe was pushing on that spot.

Yes, I don't like Doctors and am not one to go to the Dr. unless I'm at my wit's end and not seeing any progress. 9 times out of 10 I figure I can fix myself, and I do. I go in for regular check ups, I just hate going in for illness or injury.

Jane - Glad you got your workouts in, I'm sure it felt great! Yes - Katherine Switzer is the guest speaker at my marathon. I'm excited.

Alisha - I hope your knee feels better.

Lisa - I only have the newer version of Vol 1 but what I like about CC is each challenge is it's own tune so you can make your own workout. I have a few iTrains for outdoor running that I like - they are 60 minutes long but broken into two segments so you can do a 30 minute run or 60 or repeat one of the segments.

Hi All!

Just home for lunch and catching up on my "reading!"

Cindi - When you mentioned iTrain I had to take a moment and post about the NordicTrack Incline Trainer! I just have to have one! (somehow, someday) It uses iTrain, goes to a 40% incline AND you can use Google Maps and run anywhere in the world on it! Awesome, huh? Oh, I can't wait to have room for one!

I'll post more later tonight!

See ya!

Hi Everyone!

Alisha ~ I hope your knee feels better soon!

Lisa ~ Glad the snow missed you! I'm glad you still have your doggie to run with.

Cindi ~ I love P.F. Chang's but I have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get to one.

I have some experience with pool running but like you I ran in the shallow section. My friend has one of those belts and I used it once but didn't like it.

I hope your heel feels better. I'm like you, I try to heal myself before I go rushing to the doctor. Usually it takes rest and patience. I know in my gut if it's something serious.

It's so cool Kathrine Switzer is the guest speaker. I really loved her book and she did lots for the sport and for women in general.

Tricia ~ Yay for running even when you didn't "feel it". That is half the battle.

No workout for me tonight. Today would have been my dad's 87th birthday so we are going out to dinner even though he isn't with us in person.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Alisha - I'm glad your knee is feeling better! That's a good sign! My arm is still hurting from my H1N1 flu shot I had 2 weeks ago! I'm thinking about calling and trying to find out why! It's really bothering me during upper body work. I've had tetanus shots that didn't hurt this long!

Cindi - Wow! What a busy, busy weekend! You made me exhausted just reading everything you had going on and you still managed to get a workout in! I'm bowing in reverence! I've never done pool running, just aqua aerobics. Amazing how much of a workout you really do get in the pool with the resistance of the water!

Jane - Hope you enjoy dinner out! That sounds like a lovely way to celebrate his life!
