New Runners February 2010

Happy Valentine's Day!

I went for a long hike this morning. I didn't get those workouts while I was in San Francisco for Macworld. But, oh well! I probably need to be really good for a couple of weeks before I weigh in.

Hi everybody!

Hi Alisha!

Your hike sounds refreshing! Don't worry about not getting in all your workouts! It's tough when your away from your comfort zone and regular routine! Believe me, I know! Hope you had a good time at Macworld! Welcome back and happy exercising!

I got in another good run today! Weird though that as tired as I was this morning, my pace was actually faster! Go figure.

Hi All,

I had a busy weekend and today I'm off for Presidents Day so mom and I are going shopping. Saturday morning I did an upper body workout and in the afternoon I did a workout that consisted of running, swings and sit ups.

Yesterday I ran 6 miles. It wasn't the best run. At the end I fell and skinned both my knees and hands. Not the best way to end a run.

I'm not sure if I'm working out today or not. We'll see.

Tricia ~ Albany did end up with some snow. We just had flurries for about 10 or 15 minutes then it went back to rain. It was pretty coming down.

Alisha ~ Your hike sounds really nice.

Cindi ~ Hope your feeling better and your heel is good to go.

Lisa ~ Congrats on CC!!!

Enjoy your day off Jane! I hope your booboos aren't too sore! I haven't skinned my knees in ages! (knock on wood!) Probably will next weekend's run, now! If I were going to, I would have done it yesterday! We took a different route for our run and went across the Washington Bridge (the main highway running east/west across the river) and the walking path was all covered in ice! We made it across and back okay, but, man, it takes a lot more energy getting across that stuff!

I'm off too and I'm impatiently waiting for my push/pull tower to arrive today, even though I know it won't show up until around 6 p.m. UPS never gets by our house early! Darn it! I wanted to use it for my workout today, but I don't want to wait that late to do it! Oh, well.

Again, enjoy shopping with your Mom!

change of plans

I didn't do the yoga last night, I was just to tired. I will do it some time today, probably right before bed. I was going to do MMA but I'm leaning more towards HIIT. Find out when I get there, right?:p

Hi Jane! I hope your knees feel better. A little aloe can help with the discomfort.

Tricia- that is kind of odd that you were tired but your pace was better. I wonder if you just wanted to get it over with?:p

Hi everybody!

I didn't do B&G yesterday instead I did several intense rounds of Wood Max consisting of a stacking phase (with the added challenge of breaking the wood out of its ice crust first) with added stability challenge (the sheet of ice in front of my basement door) followed by an upper body intensive splitting phase followed by another loading/unloading/stacking phase to failure. After that, I gave myself the afternoon off. This morning I did Providence and Namaste yoga.

My glutes and hams have been sore and tired for days now and I'm wondering if I'm not giving them enough time to recover. My "rotation" has been loosely based around the following:

KB and yoga
rest (might include yoga/bellydancing/Ellen Barret workout)
Lower Body weights (Gym Style Legs or B&G), maybe yoga
Upper Body weights (PUB usually or Push-Pull Upper body x2), maybe yoga
rest (might include yoga/bellydancing/Ellen Barret workout)

And then I start over again with KB. But I'm also adding my running in there whenever I feel like it so a lot of times I run on my "rest" day or on my upper body day which means sometimes my lower body is really working three or more days in a row. I wonder if I need to switch things up so I'm running on lower body days and giving my lower body a couple of real rest days per week.

Tricia ~ I get that weird sensation too. Sometimes one good run primes me for another. I usually have a great pace after doing an interval or tempo run the day before. Funny isn't it? Did your tower arrive? Do you LOVE it? Its one of the things on my wish list...

Jane ~ Aww man that sucks! I hope your road rashes heal up quickly!

Alisha ~ I am such a fan of doing whatever feels good today. I have never done well with a 'real' rotation. Let us know which workout you wind up doing.

Cindi ~ Hi! How is your heel doing?

Lisa

Hi Alisha! LOL! That's a good theory! :p It was a new path, so I wasn't sure where the halfway point was going to be - my DH was "in charge" of setting the path. We wanted a different route - you know how running the same route can get so boring? :(

I'm like you about what I want to do during my active rest weeks! I don't set a schedule and just do whatever workout I fee up to that day! It makes things fun and interesting!

Hi Lisa! I would have to agree with you. It sounds like you're not giving your lower body enough of a rest between workouts. However, I would find it difficult to run on lower body weight days! Of course, if you could get the cardio in early, then give yourself several hours rest before doing weights, that might work. I'm a wuss when it comes to lower body work! That would kill me no matter what!

I did get my tower today! :D:D:D And, for the first time EVER, UPS showed up early! It was here around 2:00 or so. I told the UPS guy he made my day! I put it together right away. The instructions said you could assemble in 5 minutes and it disassembles quickly. I was skeptical to say the least, but it really did only take 5 minutes, maybe a bit less. I'm not mechanically inclined either and it was easy - even for me! It was nice that I could take it apart quickly too so I could store it more easily. As I've mentioned, over and over, I'm sure (sorry ) we don't have much space, so that worked out nicely!

Oh, and, yes, it made my workout so much easier! No hoisting the loaded barbell down on my step for bench presses and then, struggling to get back up with it! Ah, what a relief! And, flow, man, my workout went so much more smoothly that way too!

I absolutely LOVE my tower! BTW, I'm back to pushups again in week 4 of Meso 2 and I actually did 10 full out on the toes pushups! :D:eek: Woo-Hoo! I'm getting stronger! Yay!!!! I was so excited! Of course, right after that set, it was back to the knees! But, hey, that's still great progress for me! Now, to attempt chinups and pullups on Friday . . . not sure if I can do those. I did attempt one today after putting the tower together. Yep. Got one. That was it.

Plus, our boiler arrived today! So, the chimney guy comes on Thursday to install a liner and rebrick some of the chimney, plus a few other minor repairs. The heating guys will also be here Thursday to remove the POS boiler and oil tank. Friday, they come back and install the new boiler! We might actually have heat this weekend! Yippee! I wasn't really expecting this to happen quite this soon. I'm thinking the heat won't get turned on until the City comes in and inspects and approves everything, but I hope it will all be done! This electric heat thing is a pain and it takes so long for the house to warm up, besides having to turn them off when we're gone which defeats the purpose because then the house gets cold again.

Anyway, sorry this is so long!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Monday! I was off for the holiday, which was nice! DH still had class this morning and he left again at 3 pm for his afternoon and evening classes.

Hi Ladies!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We had an extra day off of school and my husband had a day off from work so I took a vacation day too. It was nice to have a 3-day weekend.

Saturday was the Illinois Grade School Music Ensemble contest. David had a trombone solo, Honor had a cello solo, duet, and quartet. Of course it is scheduled thorughout the day so you spend a lot of time hanging out. They all got '1' ratings for their performances so we were really happy with that.

Sunday I spent the entire morning (skipping church) making cakes for Paul's Scout dinner next Sunday. I'm making cake for about 100 people so I made 6 half-sheet size cakes that will make 3 2-layer cakes. Then house cleaning so the cleaning people could do their job on Monday.

Monday morning we went to see Avatar. Good movie - beautiful visually but the story was 100% predictable. I kept thinking it was Dances with Wolves on an alien planet. Then yesterday afternoon I went for a run! YAY!

10 miles total. 20 minute warm up, then 6x(1k slow, 1k fast, 200 m walk). Those 200 m went by really fast but I felt good at the end. The heel was talking to me but it wasn't unbearable. Icing and stretching last night and it felt good as new this morning. So keep your fingers crossed!

The cold is gone - although I did have some residual coughing but I feel so much better.

Tonight is Zumba and probably some weights or core work.

Tricia - Wow - I missed all your good news! Tower, unemployment, boiler, good runs, good workouts! Try YakTrax for ice and snow - they are very effective. I have the same experience with runs sometimes - it's strange how perceived exertion don't always match pace. Maybe running with a partner helped you stay on pace.

Jane - Did you get some good deals yesterday? How are you healing from your fall? I hate falling down.

Lisa - Great job on CC6! I haven't had any problem with the Pyramid DVD but I don't think I've done it more than 10 times. I'm not sure you are overworking your lower body but you might want to think about nutrition - are you eating protein after your workouts? Another thought is more stretching (foam roller if you have it) or try an ice bath after the runs.

Alisha - I would love to go to San Fransisco. Never been there. It always looks so beautiful when I see it in movies or on TV. How is your head? I saw you hit it on the open discussion board.

Hopefully I'm properly caught up now! Have a great day everyone.

Cindi

Wow Cindi! What a busy, busy weekend for you! Congrats to your kids for their successes at the concert! They must all be very talented! I love Zumba!

Alisha - Glad you took a day off! It can't hurt just to be on the safe side!

I did Cardio Fusion today, but about halfway through, I just wasn't feeling it anymore, so I stopped and did some abs. Should be better tomorrow for STS legs (better be anyway)!

marathon in 6 weeks

OK..so I know this is bad. I am out of shape, no exercise since I finished Insanity last year before Christmas (month long vacation). I really want to work on gaining back some muscle, but I think starting running again (I have run on and off over the years, mostly the 5-8 a day range, 3X a week max) is gonna be taxing enough..any ideas?

thanks
Cindy

oh wait..its in 10 weeks (I seemed to have overlooked march)

Hi ladies!

Last night was some weight work at the gym and then Zumba class. Lots of fun. My heel feels really good today. :)

Alisha - sorry about your head still hurting. I hope it is better today.

Tricia - Zumba is a lot of fun. The instructor turns the lights down so you can't see anyone too well. It helps reduce the intimidation factor. Some of the hip moves I'm sure I look goofy doing - so I'm glad it's dimmed! Cardio Fusion is a lot of workout - half is more than most people do on a normal day!

Cindy - I saw your other thread on the Open Discussion board and commented there as to weight training vs. running. Keep checking in here - I'd love to hear how you progress. Is your marathon May 1? That's when mine is.

Hi Jane and Lisa and any lurkers out there!

I'm heading out for a hike this morning. I'm ready to go. 3 plus miles, probably just walk it.

Cindi-My head is feeling better. I'm glad your heel is feeling bette.r

Cindy- Hi! Feel free to check in here. I'm glad you have the ten weeks! Thats better than three:eek: I wouldn't do a lot of heavy lifting if you are asking your body to do endurance work. Yoga and maybe weights that are just enough to maintain what you have without adding new muscle. Your body is already adjusting to something new, that longer distance. ( I say this as a complete total novice:p)

Hi Tricia, Sydney, and . . . oh drat. my brain is no good. Well, I'm thinking of you and you know who you are.

On lunch break again and checking in on you guys!

Cindy - Welcome to our humble running group! I, too, am a new runner! I agree though that, if you're working towards a major running event, you should hold off on any serious weight training until after. Focus on your running!

Hi Cindi! Glad your heel is feeling better! Wow! I have always done Cardio Fusion in its entirety! Oops! Oh, well, I go with calling it an accomplishment! LOL!

Alisha - Hope you had a nice hike this morning! Glad your head feels better!

I broke down and scheduled an appointment with my doctor about this stupid pain in my arm! I swear it has something to do with that flu shot, but I know she's going to blame my workouts! I have a degree in fitness, was a certified personal trainer and had weight room certification, so I know my stuff! Plus, this being my first time through STS, I held back just a bit on the amount of weights I use. I could actually go heavier, but wanted to get used to the program a bit before pushing it. My next round will be closer to my proper weights. With that, I'm still seeing some great results!

Wish me luck! I go in next Tuesday.

Tricia- I don't think its your exercise at all. My Dad had a reaction to his flu shot several years ago and it was not a good thing. I hope you feel better.

Hi Cindi- my head is feeling better unless I touch it.

I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow, maybe I will try Cardio Core Circuit. I have to be at work most of the day. Thats ok. My Dad and I are going to be laid off in a week and a half. So <crosses fingers> I'm looking for work soon.

Hi Cindy #2 (this way I can keep track.) How is training going?

Hey all you lurkers!!! <Sniffs for cheesy poufs breath> Yup, I think you're in here!

Hi ladies!

Tricia - I don't think this is exercise related. You are smart enough to know the difference. I'm not a doctor, but do you think they hit a nerve when you had the shot? It doesn't sound infected.

Alisha - well, don't touch your head! ;) I'm glad it is feeling better. I'm so sorry to hear about your job - do you have something in mind you want to pursue?

Cindy - I hope all the comments about the marathon didn't scare you away. Hope you check in here. I liked Alisha's suggestion to go for a half marathon.

So yesteday I ran 80 minutes. 7 miles and some change. Good workout. My heel barely 'talked' to me at all. I think it has decided to get with the program and quit whining. :)

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I've been MIA lately. I haven't worked out all week and probably won't workout until Saturday. I had an allergic reaction from Neosporin and both scrapes on my knees became rashy and inflamed so I haven't worked for 2 days. I'm going back to work tomorrow but will be out next week for my trip to the beach. I'm hoping I'll be able to get run in on Saturday before we leave.

Waving hello to everyone.

I will try to check on Saturday.

Jane!!!! I hope you feel better!

Tricia- Got heat yet?

Cindi- Hi!

Cindy- How is the running going?

I tried CArdio Core Circuit this morning. It was kind of like doing a HIIT workout with some core thrown in. OMG. I have a lot of growing to do with this workout.

Hi ladies,
My friend wanted to get a gym membership yesterday so I went with him and wound up signing up as his 'buddy' so now I have a membership too. Don't know how much I will use it when the weather gets nicer but for now its fun.

Yesterday I did Pyramid (full body mix) and added on some floorwork. Then I did CC V1 on the elliptical at the gym. Today I did the elliptical (hills for 30 min) then did biceps and back. Then we played racquetball for 45 minutes and I got hit in the nose by the ball. Don't know if I'll do that again.

They offer a Zumba class on Tuesday nights and I'm excited to try that out. I have a tendency to have two left feet though.

Jane ~ Ick, sorry to hear about the reaction. Hopefully it will heal up quickly. Which beach are you going to? I hope you have some nice weather for your trip.

Alisha ~ So sorry to hear about your job! Let us know what your Plan B thoughts are.

Cindi ~ Glad to hear your heel is getting onboard with the program.

Tricia ~ I hope they figure out what is wrong with your arm and give you useful information.

Cindy ~ Good luck getting back in shape! It's always tough but seems to happen this time of year doesn't it?

Lisa

I'm back! I just read through the last couple of posts.

Lisa ~ Have fun with your gym membership. I was thinking of signing up at a smaller gym in my town just to do some spinning. I need to go there and check it out. It's a 24 hour place so I can go whenever I want to.

We are going to St. George Island, FL which is in the Gulf of Mexico about 75 miles from Tallahassee. We go there often and rent a beach house. I actually don't really care about the weather. We are taking mom and getting away from life for a couple of days. I hope to get a couple of runs in while I'm there plus lots of reading and relaxing. Reality is starting to sink it about dad and it's been hard!:confused:

Tricia ~ I hope your arm gets better soon!!!

Alisha ~ Sorry to hear about your job. I hope you find something soon! Hope your head feels better!

Cindi ~ Glad your heel is better!

Cindy ~ Welcome to our group!
