New Runners February 2010

That's a great story, Tricia! Maybe Satan did that to you to turn you off from lent. :)

Ran 5 miles last night - heel is acting up again (I thought for sure it was over!) so I'm giving up and going to a podiatrist tomorrow to get to the bottom of this once and for all (I hope!). I'll let you know what he says/does.

My DH won't eat pie either! So, seeing how I love pie, I never bake it because we all know I would eat the whole thing! So, not fair. I keep threatening to bake one anyway, but keep talking myself out of it!

Cindi, I could never break lent for a day for sweets! I would fall right off the wagon! That takes tons of will power! I don't do anything for lent anymore. Not since I gave up chocolate and immediately after lent and having just a bit of chocolate, I ended up in the Emergency Room with serious abdominal pain and had to have my gall bladder removed! Probably not medically related, but definitely psychologically related!

Whoa! I've heard of death by chocolate, but isn't that a bit, literal?

doms doms doms

In my booty. I did 4DS KB/Lower body yesterday. It seemed easy at the time!:p But, Cathe got her licks in this morning, I could barely sit down:p

Later today its 4DS HIS/whatever weights that is, I forget.

Hi everybody!

Yesterday I walked 3 miles with the pups. Today I try Zumba class for the first time (wish me luck!) and do upper body weights at the gym. All of this talk of food is making me hungry!

Lisa

Cindi - I never thought of that! Hmmm, darn that Satan! He's so sneaky!

I hope you get some resolution to your heel problem!

Alisha - That cake sounds divine! Can you bake me one for my birthday this year and ship it? Okay, maybe two, one chocolate and one anything, but chocolate!

That's how my lower half feels after I do B&G, or STS Legs! Ouch!

Lisa - How did you like Zumba? I'm dying to hear!

Okay, my doctor seems to think that my muscle just did not take to that H1N1 shot at all and is taking forever to get over it. She's holding off on doing an ultrasound to see if there's any fluid build up or other issues in tissue (ha, ha!). So, now, she wants me to lay off the upper body work for 10 days, take high doses of Ibuprofen for a short while and ice it instead of heat. She seems to think that will clear it up. If that doesn't work, then she'll order up the ultrasound.

I want it to work! I just want to be able to do stuff without pain in that deltoid muscle! Amazingly, she did agree it wasn't a joint problem since I had full range of motion and no pain higher up. So, it's a good thing I'm finishing off Meso 2 this week! I'll have a full week off to try this out! Hopefully, it'll be enough time to heal it!

Tricia, I'm so sorry about your arm. I hope it heals soon. I can bake you a cake and take a picture but I guess its not the same as eating one:p

Lisa- How was the Zumba?

Cindi- The cake should have turned out right but it sort of is sweeter than what I would eat myself. I think I should have made a regular butter/cream frosting. The ganache just looks, odd.

But, I bet it will taste ok.;)

Maybe do the white chocolate ganache as a filling between the layers and then frost with buttercream next time. I made a buttercream frosting once with white chocolate melted into it and it didn't quite turn out. White chocolate is a tricky flavor sometimes.

I am sure it is YUMMY!!!

Lisa - how was Zumba? I was at Zumba class last night thinking of you! :)

Tricia - I hope the Dr.'s prescribed treatment does the trick for you!

Hi everyone else!

Last night I ran 2 miles, Zumba and about 30 minutes of weights/core.

Going to the podiatrist in a few minutes - I'll let you know what he says.

Good Morning

I did the all upper body premix yesterday from 4DS. Today, either it will be the bootcamp premix or HIS/LIS premix. My booty is hurting from Monday's workout. doms. sheesh.

Hi Cindi- I hope it goes well at the doctors office.

Hi everybody!!

Zumba was lots of fun. There were a LOT of new people in the class so she took it pretty slow and I was actually more than able to keep up. (I'm notoriously not coordinated when it comes to those sorts of things. I dance fine in place but if you ask me to move around - watch out.) If she picks up the pace a little bit next week I'll be very happy with it. It was a good workout and I could feel it in my hips and legs this morning. After Zumba I did 20 minutes on the elliptical (hills setting) and upper body weights. It is nice having access to some of the machines like the lat pulldown. This afternoon I will take the dogs for a walk.

Cindi ~ Ha ha! I love it, we were Zumbaing together. How long is your Zumba class? Do they take breaks between the songs or just keep moving through? Thanks for putting it on my radar screen. Good luck with the podiatrist.

Tricia ~ Hopefully the week off, ibuprofen and ice will fix it. Things really are slow to heal sometimes. I understand your impatience though - I get frustrated on my rest days feeling like I 'should' or 'could' be doing something. Who wants to take 10 days off in a row?!? But we've got our fingers crossed that it does the trick for you.

Alisha and Jane ~ Hi!

Lisa

Lisa - my Zumba class is almost an hour long with no breaks. She says to grab water when you need it. The first couple of songs are lower impact and slower to warm up. Then we have a set of increasingly fast/higher impact songs, then a couple less intense songs to cool down and the stretch is usually the last 10 minutes but we end a couple minutes early so you don't really stretch for 10 minutes. I noticed last night that I worked up a good sweat, but I was never breathing hard like I do when I run, so I would guess my HR doesn't get out of the 130's.

I usually am so busy trying to follow along - she goes fast because the class is full of regulars that I don't even notice what anyone else is doing. But last night I happened to look up and noticed there are a lot of women who look as goofy as me but everyone was having fun.

So the podiatrist was way cooler than I expected. Not too old. ;) The first thing he did was look at my running shoes. I wore a pair that had a good 200 plus miles on them thinking he may want to check the wear pattern.

Then he checked out my foot, asked some questions. He could tell pretty quickly that I have a bone spur on the back of my heel that developed from repeated stress to the point where the achilles inserts to the heel. He said the spur is not really a problem but more an indication that I have insertional achilles tendonitis.

My arches are normal to high but because I have good flexibility in my feet and achilles tendon so he said the tendonitis is likely caused by how my foot twists and over pronates when I land and push off. Treatment is Aleve twice a day+PT+orthotics AND I can keep running. :) :) :)

Cindi - That's great that he's not going to sideline you! Woo-Hoo! Sounds like he really knows his stuff!

Lisa - Glad you liked Zumba! Sometimes I miss classes, not usually, but things like bellydance and Zumba, I miss a lot! I don't miss the traditional classes because most instructors piss me off!

Well, it's the day after my md appt. and my arm was killing me this morning. I haven't filled my prescription yet, but I took some Advil twice today and it feels much better! Maybe one month was the magic number? Did legs tonight, so that didn't affect the arm so much. We'll see how it goes!

Tomorrow is Low Max and ab work. I'll finish off this Mesocycle Friday with back and biceps, then take the rest week and really focus on icing and taking drugs! LOL!

I'm craving sweets tonight! I don't if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I don't have ANYTHING that qualifies in the house!

Took a rest day yesterday and today - busy with kid activities and friends coming over. I'll be back running tomorrow and hopefully both days this weekend.

I have my first PT session today so I'll let you know how that goes.

Good Morning

Hows it going? I have the cardio premix from BC planned for later today. I'm feeling the doms from Tuesday. Oh, my arms:p

Cindi- I'm so glad that you get to run!

Tricia- Its good thing you aren't here. I brought home my girl scout cookies last night from my dealer (ok she's a little girl but you know its true.)

Lisa- The Lat pull down was one of the machines my PT/chiropractor had me do after I was in that stupid car accident when I was 11 years old. I guess I could do it with a band but that machine is so convenient, I wish I had a gym membership (sometimes, then I realize, I ain't got no money honey.)

Jane- I hope you are doing ok.

Hi all you lurking types!

Good luck with your PT, Cindi!

Lisa - Ooooh, Girl Scout cookies, yummmmm . . . .

I know what you mean about sometimes wanting a gym membership, then I remember that it didn't do me any good to have all those nice pieces of equipment around because I could never get ACCESS to them due to equipment hogs! I so love working out at home!

PT Session was interesting. We are going to try the PT route for a few weeks before going back to the podiatrist for orthotics. The PT doesn't think I overpronate and that the cause was just more likely due to the increase in running. She had me walking around a lot looking for pronation and couldn't find it. She thought my stride was pretty good but noticed my knee goes in on my problem side when I lunge and it could be the cause.

So she did some assessments of my strength and flexibility and gave me some exercises to do twice a day. Then she iced my ankle and put some tape on it that actually feels really good. The tape is waterproof and will last a few days.

I go on Tuesday/Thursday for the next 5 weeks.

She also said don't buy any inserts or new shoes - let the exercises and therapy work first. Changing shoes now could just make it harder to fix the problem.

And she also said - keep running. How I feel from my runs will be the indicator of how well the PT is working. So the saga continues.

I have to make some chana masala - having company over tonight. It's my 5 best friends. I collected their favorite recipes and made a litte cookbook for us and tonight we are bringing a sampling from the book for dinner. :)

Hello Runner Chicks!

I'm back!! The beach was nice and truly I could have spent another week there but we have to face reality sometime. At least I'm off work until next week. Yay!! :):)

I did lots of walking and a little running while I was away. The weather was pretty good although it was too cold for swimming. It was gorgeous on Tuesday so I took 2 long walks on the beach and even got my feet wet. Unfortunately those nasty no-see-ums were around and I ended up with lots of bites. The house was really lovely and secluded so we got plenty of rest and did lots of card playing and reading.

Tonight I'm braving the cold (ok...it's in the 50's) and going for a run. I running in a 5K race on Saturday.

I go away for a couple of days and when I come back I see this thread is all about brownies, cake, pie and Girl Scout cookies! Yikes!! I'm trying to climb back on the wagon. :):)

Cindi ~ Keeping my fingers crossed that the PT works for you. Have fun with your friends tonight. It sounds like fun!

Tricia ~ Hope your arm gets better soon!

Waving hello to Lisa and Alisha.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi ladies,
This morning it was yoga and Bollywood dance. Yeah, I finally broke down and did one of the shows on FitTV that are designed for the "Ooh It's January I Think I'll Start Working Out" crowd. In my defense, school was on a two-hour delay and I had time to kill :p. This afternoon, I walk the dogs in the snow. Yesterday, we ran two miles for our dog walk. Tomorrow its Providence.

Jane ~ I'm glad you had a good trip. The 50s sound sooo nice and tropical, please send some my way :D

Cindi ~ The PT sounds interesting. Glad you can keep on running. I'm always amazed at the medical establishments way of saying, "Oh stop doing that and you'll get better". Maybe 80 years ago when people actually did physical labor for work that was true... I find PTs to be very helpful.

Tricia ~ Good luck with your arm! Unfortunately I feel like real healing takes longer than a month. You know, if it hadn't been for my friend, I never would have gotten a gym membership. Things are easiest working out at home and I can really work at my level. I find a lot of group classes aren't really intense enough for me anymore. But I do like some of it, especially the lat pulldown machine. And I hope to love the Zumba. We'll see. I think I love the idea of it :)

Alisha ~ If it makes you feel any better, this is my list of things I REALLY need the gym for: Zumba, lat pulldown machine (I have a band for it but...), elliptical machine (friend has a treadmill I can use though) and that machine that you can work your lower back on (can't remember the name). Oh well, so yeah I don't really think its worth paying $40 or $50 a month for but since I got on real cheap as a "buddy" its okay.

Lisa

Cindi - Your PT sounds like they know their stuff! It's good that you can keep running! I hope the PT works for you. I love the idea that you created a recipe book for your friends and yourself! That's the one thing I really regret not having, is friends to hang out with. I think you only get that when you live in one place for a really long time! Being a military brat, I never had too many friends, much less any that kept in touch over the years. I know it sounds like I'm whining, but not really, just stating the facts and the things I wish I could have sometimes. It takes a lot of effort just to get together once or twice a year with the couple of friends I have here.

Anyway, I digress! Enjoy your dinner tonight!

Jane - Welcome back! I'm glad the beach was lovely and refreshing! I surely don't miss those no see 'ums! 50s! That's shorts weather for us! Hope you have/had a good run tonight!

Yes, we've all been talking about and craving (at least I have) sweets! Haven't had any though! Not yet, anyway . . . there's always the weekend and now, I'm thinking brownies! We'll see.

Lisa - Bollywood! How is that? I've heard that's India's Hollywood, but there's a workout called Bollywood? Where have I been hiding?

Well, I'm watching some of the Olympics, but I can really do without the ice skating. It's probably the only sport that has never changed, not one iota, over the decades. It's all the same jumps twirls, spins, etc., ho-hum, boring! It's funny because I used to love it as a kid! I've actually seen Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamil in person years ago! I know, I'm dating myself!

So, have a great night everyone!

Four more days til the rain stops here and the sun comes back out! We're already two days into what I call our Seattle weather!
