New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

Hi Lisa,

I'm so impressed that you teach horticulture. On my hikes I am always saying that I wish I knew at least the names of the plants (you can see some of the pictures on my Cathespace page).

I know Janis does do some pool running. I wish I could do that too, but I even walk by a swimming pool and my eyes start burning (old virus in my eyes).

I do drink coffee in the morning, but never after about 10am. I may give it a shot if I try running in the afternoon again. Trying it when I was sick may have turned me off of it forever, just from bad timing.

It's funny - the Pyramid series are my least favourite, and yet, when doing Jari Love's workouts, I automatically do down pyramids, because I can't stand doing all those fifty million reps at a low weight. So I start high and work the muscle to fatigue, then go lower, etc., until I reach fatigue at the lowest weight I have.

Morningstar ~ my climbing buddy and I used to manage a greenhouse together growing native plant material. You would laugh to watch us hike because we are always stopping to look at and identify stuff. We had to take a detour on the way home Sunday to confirm an id on a tree I was looking at. Nothing like a couple of plant nerds wandering their way through the woods.

I can see how people would find Pyramids boring but I love having an end in sight and knowing exactly what's going on. Most of the time I just do the Up Pyramid because of time constraints though. I do get a little bored when I do the whole thing except on the exercises I love (Lioness I'm with you on that one - biceps and back definitely, and for me legs). I do find some of Cathe's weight choices a little weird in this dvd (starting with 3# for triceps kickbacks?) and almost wonder if she was working around an injury.

Lioness ~ I'm leaning towards the Clinic. I don't really want to spend the money but think it would be a good investment. I *just want a workout* but think the form pointers would be priceless. I get paid tomorrow (getting paid once a month sucks!) so we'll see what happens Thursday morning :).

Lisa

I always loved the pyramids but never thought about why - now that you mention it - I do really like knowing what's coming. And I always get great DOMS from PUB.

Hi Ladies - the cake is cooling and I have a few minutes before I need to make the frosting and move on to bday dinner prep. I was going to use the stationary bike today, but - well - one of dh's bday -

Cindi – I went from an Asics gel to the Nike free then I went back to more support, orthotic and a gel sole in the Saucony Hurricane! I really liked the light weight shoe, and may end up going back someday, but my ankle/arch need the support for now. I should probably take a workshop to find out what I am doing wrong. Like I said in an earlier post, that’s the trouble with the self-taught, they have lousy teachers! (me!) I am thinking it could be fun to do a duathon or a tri someday, however I started swimming because I can’t run right now. :( Ouchie on the blister!

Sydney – Did you pass your fitness test? What do they test you on? Btw, what workouts would you rather be doing other than running?

Tana – I would love to have been at the birthday party! What a blast. Of course, I say that from the sidelines, I know how intense it can be in the trenches! How was your treadmill date?

Morningstar – a.k.a Morningstar – yeah – that is exactly what you would put on the roll-call roster! {laughing} How was the doctor!? Please tell me you got in to see someone!?
Pose is a pose is a pose. (sorry, couldn’t resist :D) Pose is a style developed by Dr.Nicholas Romanov, http://www.posetech.com/ it literally is the pose you take in running or any sport and like Cindi’s notes indicate it is a leaning forward falling movement which takes the impact of running off of knee/shin/ankle. (see how teaching myself worked out!)
Clubbells are Scott Sonnon’s http://www.clubbell.tv/

Jane – dare I ask what a “snatch test” is?

The Swimman, re-named swim woman by my ds who was helping me set it up, is a waterproofed ipod shuffle, it comes with waterproof headphones and is small enough to clip to the back of your goggles. I put it on my goggle strap and then secured it under my swim cap. The lap counter is a little finger device that has a timer, stop watch, lap counter and keeps a summary off all that data including giving you split lap times. http://www.amazon.com/SportCount-Inc-90000-Chrono-100/dp/B000TRI7W2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1254255989&sr=1-2 I only swam 30, 30 yd laps, in 30 minutes. Clearly I have room for much improvement!

Alisha – “my avatar is supposed to be a photograph of some orchids” is it me or is there something wrong with your avatar?:D:D

Lisa – yes, I have been pool jogging too. It is a lot harder than it looks and can be exhausting, and I feel really foolish! Have you tried the STS series, if not, I think you would really like it a lot!

Tricia - whaddaya think of the 30 degree temperature drop! I hope the hot air balloon wasn't scheduled for this morning! Check in girl, or I am coming down there to find you!

Jane – dare I ask what a “snatch test” is? (if you had ever had it done, you would know! I believe its more common term is a pap smear)

Hi everyone.

Thank you all for the positive thoughts about the fitness test today.:D well we have 3 events:
Pushups
Situps
Run

we could score a total of 100 points for each event. So for the push ups; I received 100 points. I had to do 40 pushups on my toes to get 100 points. For the run; I received 86 points. (I ran 2 miles in 18:54!!-- I ran a 9:28 min miles).

But sadly..... I did not do well on the situps. I failed:mad: first time in my 20 year career!!! I am soooooo sad right now. I couldn't even do 40 situps!! It's been 6 months since I had my baby and my abs are still not right!!
So because I failed the situps--- I failed the test. My boss wants me to take it again in 2 days. because it doesn't look good for me to have failed. What are some of the things that I can do???????

P.S... I am happy about my run time though....

Sydney, that is fantastic time for your run, and insanely awesome about the push-ups - I am very impressed, especially given that you had a baby only 6 MONTHS AGO. I am shocked that they require sit-ups, given that sit-ups are so harmful to the body to do. I don't know how many I could do; I haven't done them since junior high, which I think was the last time they were recommended by anyone. By the way, why do you have to take this test? If it's not mandatory, can you wait a little while until your abs catch up with the rest of you?

Hi ladies,

Today I went for a run and use my Nike sensor. I think I am going to fall in love with this toy.

My time was 41:35, pace was 12:44, and my distance was 3.26miles with a cal burn of 424. My hrm gave me a cal burn of 730.

Sydney (((HUGS))) try not to beat yourself up. Your core muscles will get there. 6 months is not that long after having a baby. ^^5's on the pushups and the run.

Janis I hope your celebration is a blast. What kind of cake did you make?

Morningstar how are you feeling? I do think it could be the change in seasons.

Tana - happy birthday to your little boy. Parties are always fun but can be exhausting.

Alisha your meal plan looks great.;)

Cindi and Jane hope you are all having great night.

Adjustments: I had some spoon bread instead of the cereal and I did have 2 glasses of milk, some raw almonds instead of the pumpkin seeds, and a bite of chocolate. I also had a very small serving of a home made lemon cake (gf) with home made raspberry ice cream (organic.) Its not the end of the world. Also, we had mung bean noodles with dinner. They were fabulous!

The plan for tomorrow is:
breakfast buckwheat crepes with a pear ricotta filling- I will be making these in the morning.
snack pumpkin seeds
lunch asian vegetables/mung bean noodles (left overs)
snack almonds
dinner grass fed beef/pork meat loaf, green beans

Its so weird, I do get hungry and I still enjoy food but having been sick has made it less important than it was. I eat snacks because it prevents over eating but its almost an annoyance to look at the clock and think I have to eat again?

Oh, that kind of 'snatch' test! {laughing} I see, so that's why they call it a full-body workout?!

:D

Good Morning!

I had a great run last night. The weather was beautiful. There is a BIG difference when you run in 95 degree heat and 80 degree weather. I didn't feel like I was running through a wet blanket.

Today is a rest day for me.

Janis ~ A snatch test is just a test to see how many snatches you can do in a set amount of time. (It's not as interesting an answer as Morningstar's answer:p). It's sort of a benchmark and in order to pass the RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certification) you need to do a set number of snatches.

Hope your celebration when well. The cake sounded great!!

Thanks for the info on the lap counter. I may pick that up next year when I get back to swimming.

Sydney ~ You did a fantastic job!! Don't beat yourself up about the sit ups. Your abs will come back in time. You will ace it next time for sure.

Waves hello to the rest of the gang! I'll bbl.

Hi all! I had to take a rest day yesterday due to kids' activities. Cross country meet and then a scout meeting. I'm planning to run tonight 3-4 miles.

I'm blushing AND laughing about the Snatch Test!

Janis - I think maybe someday I'll try a duathlon. I need a new bike, maybe next year.

Sydney - You did a great job! But I don't get why you have to take the test again in 2 days? How does you boss expect you to improve that quickly? I hope you were just having an off day. One trick to think about if you have the option - do the situps FIRST while you are fresh. You already know you can do the run and push up part. GOOD LUCK! I have three children (twins and a third) It took a LONG time to get my abs back.

Morningstar - you should check out Pose or Chirunning just as an FYI even if you aren't having any injuries now. You may down the road or you may find some tips to use less energy when you run. On Amazon right now, the pose books are running $20-$25 and the Chirunning book is around $10. The Chirunning site has other resources that you can only get through them that are more pricey (they also sell their more expensive items through Amazon). But, I think $10 is a good deal.

Alisha - all that food sounds good! Lemon cake - YUM!

Hi everyone else! Enjoy your day.

OH - one other thought - if you are new to running, a fun podcast about two guys who are also new to running is Two Gomers Run a Marathon. I really enjoy their podcasts if you are looking for something to listen to when you run. You can find them on iTunes.

Forgot to ask you, Janis...have you read Total Immersion? I heard it is like pose/chirunning for swimming. I don't know anything about it other than that.

Good morning ladies!

I loved Morningstar's comment about the snatch test. That will put a new spin on kettlebell workouts for me :D.

I did Pyramid Upper Body this morning (up and down), skipped the floorwork since I did abs yesterday.

I had a great surprise last night. My boyfriend (who lives 8 1/2 hours away!) showed up unexpectedly! He had to head back this morning but since I haven't seen him in a month it was a treat to have even a short visit. He's just lucky he didn't get shot because I live way up the mountain and got a little nervous when 'someone' followed me in my driveway after dark.

Sydney ~ good luck with the retest. Hopefully you can get a little more time before you have to retest. There isn't much you can do in 2 days! I wonder why they want you to retest so quickly?

Cindi ~ thanks for the podcast suggestion. I listen to a lot of public radio broadcasts if I'm not doing cardio coach. I love to think about something else when I'm running.

Alicia ~ good luck getting things sorted out with your food. It's weird how something can upset your schedule and get you all off track.

I'm actually doing pretty well with food lately. I'm worried that as the weather changes I'll start craving more but I'm doing okay for now. Just have to keep reminding myself that I can't out exercise a poor diet and to HALT (check to see if I'm hungry, angry, lonely or tired; I need to work a C in there too because frequently I try to eat when I'm cold).

Waves hi to Morningstar, Jane, Jenn, Janis, Tricia and Tana.

Lisa

Janis ~ I did always feel kind of goofy pool running but I remember the weight melting off even though I was focusing on strengthening my poorly constructed hips rather than weight loss. Of course I was also in my early 20s and that helped too.

I haven't tried STS yet. I would like to but I am VERY bad about following rotations and hate to spend that sort of money and then not actually use the system as planned. I don't plan my workouts in advance - I just randomly rotate between the workouts that I have based on what I feel like doing each day (one week I'll do two full body workouts, the next I'll do an upper, a lower and a full body workout; in addition to my one kb workout per week).

Lisa

Hi guys,

I'm taking another rest day. I was going to go to work, and then backed out and went back to bed. I will catch up with everyone later.

Hi Ladies

I managed to move my body a little today; the Orthopod said I could begin using the stationary bike this week, so I did about a half hour. I wish I could report that it was great, but between my mediocre effort and me freaking out about the beginnings of a twinge in my ankle, I barely worked up a sweat. I do feel a nice warmth in my legs and some tingling, so there is some positive net-gain.

Morningstar – my dear friend, I hope you are feeling better soon! I am glad you stayed home from work. You’re still going to the NP right???

Cindi – the “Fitness Swim” book I am reading by Emmet Hines and the swim coach I consulted, Hermine, use the Total Immersion style, I also just received the Terry Laughlin dvds from Netflix, which I was viewing while biking. My goal is to refine my stroke, swim more like a speedboat, and also learn bi-lateral breathing. Hermine told me I swim like a barge. I think I'll pick up ChiRunning from Amazon.

Jane – I figured a snatch test was something to do with snatching!{laughing} Actually that could be something Dr. Seuss came up with. “Horton hatches a snatch” or “The Sneetches and the Snatches.”

I’ll have to look for a video! Intersting and funny kb terms! Clean and Press! My goodness, sounds like a laundry activity.

Sydney – when I was recovering from pregnancy and birth, I found the reverse crunches helped a lot. Focus on keeping the belly button sewn to the floor. Also, there is this lady, Teresa Tapp, who has a lot of rehab exercises that focus on the abdomen and putting your organs in place. My neighbor (who has menopause organs dropping issues) swears by her. I think some of the exercises are available at her website and on youtube. Doing them today and tomorrow might help! Gosh, I agree, you should be given a week or two, not two days!
Keep us posted!!

Lisa – I still think you might like STS. Each dvd feels new and fresh, it completely lacks the drudgery of following a rotation. Hey – what a nice surprise you had with your boyfriend. Wow – a month since your last visit! Holy smokes, I would be crawling out of my skin!

Tricia – you drunken wine taster you! Did you make it to La Luna? Where else have you been?

Alisha – I want to see pics of the glitter covered horse!

Hi Jenn Hi Tana!
Have a good day everyone. :D

Hello Everyone!

We are back home! Yeaaaaaa! I missed my babies!

Janis - A very BIG thank you for all of your helpful hints and info! We did get to La Luna and, man, were those tacos and burritos fantastic! We were able to also hit Woodhouse and I took your advice and tried the Quatre Spice and Stephen got the Heart of Darkness. We shared. Ooohhhhhh. I loved the Quatre Spice and so did Stephen! OMG! What didn't we hit?

Here's the short of it:

Our first day in Napa, we did the Wine Train and had a small tasting at the depot, then it was a wonderful lunch and dessert on board and a stop at Domaine Chandon, which was excellent! They bussed us back to the depot from there and we we got back so late that we didn't get anywhere else on Sunday night, which was okay because we got in to the hotel at 1:30 in the morning that day with very little sleep!

Monday, we did our own thing and hit, in this order:

The lame geyser because it was on the same road as the winery and we had half an hour to kill.
Chateau Montelena - Hugely wonderful experience!:eek::eek:
Sterling - That was fun, but after Montelena, most of their wines didn't equal CM! From there we went across the mountain via Petrified Forest Road to Chateau St. Jean (a recommendation from a friend), we stopped for lunch first, also on the same friend's recommendation, at Cafe Citti. It was good, but the service left much to be desired.

Chateau St. Jean had excellent Cab Sov!!!

We still had time, so we hoofed it back across the mountain to V. Sattui (not so great), but the server was funny and gave us more wine than we were supposed to get! :D:D

Then we squeezed in Grgich - again so-so. We got spoiled by hitting the two best ones early!

After that, we picked up our chocolate and our dinner from La Luna and drove back across, but not all the way, to The Vintner's Inn for our last night. What an amazingly beautiful Inn!!! It was breathtaking and romantic, plus we were able to get in a small 1.67 mile run before dinner through the vineyard!

All our pics are posted on Facebook, so if any of you are on FB, just look me up and you can see them! I'm under Tricia Rush.

Tuesday, we did our hot air balloon ride! That was fun, then it was champagne brunch after and we went and checked out of the Inn, squeezed in two more wine tastings on the way (sort of) back to San Francisco - Kendall Jackson, who had some surprisingly good wines that are not distributed unfortunately and Miriam, pretty good, but again not equal to CM or CSt.J!

Then, we took off to the City, went to the Academy of Sciences, filled up the rental and headed to the airport! Whew! Sat there for hours before our flight, did the red eye to Charlotte, sat there for 4 hours, then home!

We're exhausted and so are our babies! It's good to be home, but we had a blast!

I know this is long, but I wanted to let you know how it went! We will definitely be going again sometime minus the stop in Vegas. Now, I get to wait for my packages! This is the other fun part! We had some wine shipped. RI doesn't allow ordering from in-state, but if we are on the premises, we can have it shipped back to us! I'm so glad!! We would have had to buy another BIG suitcase otherwise! ;)

Anyway, Janis, thanks again for all of your help!

I will try to catch up on what's been going on with all of you! You've started a whole new thread and I am so lost!

Hellos to Alisha, Morningstar, Jenn, Christine (in spirit)! I look forward to getting to know all of our new members! It's so exciting to have fresh new blood - uh, I mean people!:eek:

Take care all!

JANIS - Forgot to tell you that on Monday, our biggest wine tasting day, we didn't pay for a single tasting! When we ordered wine, the winery waived it, we had coupons for free tastings from our hotel for some of them, AND all of them asked us if we wanted to share a glass, so we didn't drink our own glass at any of the wineries! No drunkeness to worry about! I was surprised they would allow that!

Hello again! I had an unplanned off day yesterday. Not sure what happened. I came downstairs after the kids were in bed fully intending to workout, but somehow Facebook sucked me in. Ugh..such a time-sucker.

My treadmill date a few days ago was so-so. It was late and the kids were in bed so I ended up just walking. I don't think I had the energy to do much more than that though.

Sydney! Remember me? We had our babies on the same day. Way to go on the 2 miles! I don't think I could do 40 situps if I had an entire day to do them. And I definitely couldn't do 40 pushups on my toes (at least right now, but I WILL someday). Maybe if I added up all of the pushups that I have EVER done in my life on my toes I could get to 40. = )

Tricia, your trip sounds amazing!

I'll have to come back tomorrow and tell you all a little more about myself. As for now, I think I'll tackle GS Legs before Facebook starts calling me.
