Hi workout buddies -
We are getting a new female yellow lab August 17th. Me and my family are having a hard time deciding on a name. I like the name Marley but my dh and two sons like "Turbo". So now my husband wants to think of other names that we all like. Do you have any suggestions?????? HELP!!
JaneJ

You can "steal" our name from our collie we had for 13 years. Her name was Lady Tanana although we called her Tanana or Tanana-Banana! :7 I do like Marley! Turbo sounds more male-like to me!

I think Marley is a really nice name. Have you checked out a baby book of names? Sometimes that helps get the thought process going.

My grandpa raised Labs used in field trials and "Gunner" was always the favorite name for alot of dogs in the trials.:)

I don't know if that's a great girls name, but he also used "Teko" alot for the females.

I second the idea of using a book of baby names....we have 3 Labs, and we are working on the alaphabet naming ours: Abby(she was named before we got her!), Bailey(he is a yellow), and Corbin(which oddly enough means "raven colored", and he is a black!) We have Delmar, and Everett for the next 2(the characters from "O Brother where art thou"....one of our favorite movies....Have fun, dog names aren't as hard as naming kids....

I have 3 cats named:

Jellibean
Ambush
Tornado (Baby)

A friend of mine has a German Shepard named Warlock (love that name).

We got a new puppy in June her name is Jasmine. She is a Great Dane. Maybe you and your children can find a name through favorite movies. My DH recently came back from Bagdad so Jasmine seemed like a good name from the Disney movies movies. The grandchildren loved it.

I think you have to get to know the personality of a new pet before choosing a name.

Once your puppy is home, her name will come to you! That's what happened with my cats Scooter, Simon, Bobsie, Mandy and Rascal. And when I was a kid, our family cat "Punkin'" was originally going to be called "Salina" (my lame choice), but then she ended up curling up in a pumpkin we were carving, so her name just came from that!) And my now-deceased "Frisco" came to me with another name, I can't remember, maybe Keiko? that his rescuers had used with him. I was experimenting with names, then came to "Sam" and "Sam Francisco" (to get in the "K" sound he seemed to respond to), then finally settled on "Frisco." Fit him perfectly.

(I don't like "Turbo": it doesn't sound like an animal, but more like a car! Marley is much better. Marley sounds like a good family dog. Loyal and loving. Turbo sounds like she'll tear the house appart and run around all the time.)

I agree with Kathryn that you have to get to know the animal before naming her! When we met our kittens, I was trying to get Rob and Laura to match, but it never did... and then DH came up with George and Gracie, which fits both of them individually and as a pair like you wouldn't believe!!!

Have fun getting to know your family's new puppy!!!

Good morning JaneJ,

Congratulations on your new baby.

Our dogs name is Molly. I asked my Mom and Dad to give us an old fashion name. They both liked Molly. An old fashion name, Irish familiar forms of Mary. Molly is part Yorky and Chauhauah, and one of the most intelligent dogs I've owned. She has imprinted herself on me, so we are close.

Our first cats name is Winkle. He was rescued. For a few days we just let things happen. He would lye on a bed and sleep all day long and even during the night, only to get up to drink and eat and... Soon he would get use to us and move his head up and make a sound to say hi, every time we came in the room. So we called him Winkle, short for Rip Van Winkle. He's still a layed back kitty, and we adore him. He loves my husband.

Our Second cat is Higgin. She was rescued. My husband and I were in Mich. a few years ago on a family reunion, by Higgens Lake. We went for a walk, and heard this awful very loud screaching sound! I looked on the ground and a very small 4 week kitty sprung and leaped into my arms. Well, she was ours from then on. A beautiful calico. And she also loves my husband. She just caught her first garder snake. Very proud she was. Pour snake though.

Here is a list from our other animals who all lived a long healthy, happy life, now in doggy heaven:

Almost...believe it or not, this name fit him
Neon
Hairy
Frits
precious

Enjoy picking out a name, its always a fun time.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas. I think I will wait until she arrives and see what name fits her personality.

We just adopted a bassett, cocker spaniel mix from the animal shelter. We named him Buster. He is adorable!
We always wait a day or two after getting a pet before we name him or her. Something always comes to us,and it always fits.

I think waiting unitl you get her home to give her a name is a great idea. It gives you a chance to see per personality. We had our older aussie for like a week before we could think of a name. We decided on Picante (like Pace picante sauce) My DH picked her out and he used to eat chips and salsa almost every night. She was a "spicy puppy" so Picante just fit both of them. My Golden retriever was named Buffy, because at 6 weeks she looked like one of those things you buff the car with. If she has a sweet personality (of course most labs do) Honey is a cute name because it describes her color and her personality. Have fun with her. I'm so jealous. I want a puppy. The last one I had is now 6. She is also an aussie. Her name is Breeze because it was breezy the day we got her. If we would have named her after she had been home for a day or two her name might have been Ditz. LOL.

I had a female yellow lab a few years ago and her name was Kaya, she was the sweetest and most obedient dog.

This may sound silly, but I love the name Peanut for a dog. Years ago I used to work at the vet and came across a lot of names, but this one stuck in my head.

This will be no help, but I have a male yellow lab and his name is Bowzer. It fits him very well. It's funny because I've had 2 labs in my life time one was named Thunder (he was HUGE, 120 lb all muscle) and then Bowzer. Both as a puppy I thought didn't fit their names, but once they grew up they were perfect. So, if the puppy doesn't quite "fit" the big dog name that you gave her, but it fits her personality just be patient. She'll grow into it!
BTW, Thunder was a Black lab.
