Since I'm a freak and ordered overnight shipping, New Moon will be here tonight!!!!! I guess that's what I'll be doing. I'm upset though that Edward isn't in it much. The other 2 books will be here on the 27th. I wish I could figure out my obssession! I'm glad I watched the movie first because now I can picture them rather than having no idea what anyone would look like.
I listened to the first three books on my mp3--got them through my library on Overdrive. If you think Bella is whiny in print (which I do), she's unbearable to 'listen' to. The fourth one I had to read (Overdrive didn't have it yet). I didn't like the writing (I agree that there needed to be more editing), but was so intrigued with the story that I had to keep going. I agree that book 2 is the weakest. I felt satisfied with the ending of the series.
It takes much longer to listen to the books than to read them, but if you are short on reading time, it's a good option--it makes folding laundry, scrubbing toilets and even running more bearable. Then you can follow it with a Cathe kickbox; because the I-can't-live-with-you-or-without-you stuff is so annoying that you want to hit and kick something.
I haven't seen the movie. I want to see it, but I don't. My curiosity will win, however. I'll have to get it at Redbox and watch it when no one else is home because DH and the kids would hate it.

To me, the movie did leave some questions, even for me, not relaizing this was a series. For example, why can the Cullens go in the sun? In every other vampire movie I've seen, sunlight hurts them. Also, at times, he doesn't even seem that into her, which is what made me wonder if he just wanted to kill her and that was the attraction. I figured something was up with the Jacob kid and the story he told Bella. I'm also not looking forward to all the whining and book 2 will be here today so I'll have to suck it up, so to speak. Why doesn't Rosalie like Bella?

You get a clearer picture of this as you read, but I think Rosalie resents being a vampire.
Let's just say she didn't come into it under the best of circumstances, and though she has incredible strength and immortality, there are certain things mortals can do that she cannot. Bella reminds her of this.
Plus Edward's dalliance with Bella puts the family at risk. They as vampires are to remain undiscovered.

Kim - You get all of these answers in the future books. They don't tell you everything in the first one.
Also, the whole point to the sun thing is that they as vampires don't go out in it because they shine and would stand out, not because the sun burns them like the old vampire tales. The movie and book both show that.p.s. The only reason he acts like he isn't into her is because it is basically taking all the strength he has not to eat her!
He's actually VERY into her. One thing the movie doesn't explain and maybe it will later, is that the reason his eyes were brown at first and he was having such a hard time even looking at her is because he hadn't "fed" lately. He goes away for a few days to "feed" and when he comes back, he is actually able to talk to her without wanting to rip her apart. And his eyes have changes to that Amber color, which is a sign that he's "eaten".

Ok so then that brings up this question...he's into her because he wants to EAT her. So then why does he hold back. WHY don't they....you know...do the deed? Wouldn't he no longer care about her once she's turned into a vampire? That's what gets me. Does he like her as food or as a soulmate? Why didn't he just either give in or, since the Cullen's didn't hurt people, why didn't he just stay away from her? I know he said in the movie that he didnt have the strength to do that, but I'm very "black and white" and I'm having a hard time distinguishing Bella from a food source or a girlfriend. I'm sorry to keep nagging but this is causing problems for me. Maybe he originally saw her as food but then fell in love with her????? Also, he told her ealr on that he felt very protective of her.....why was that? That would've been before they "fell in love."

LOL! He must have been glutton for punishment! I think he was so attracted to her on both levels. It was his love (at first sight) for her that kept him from giving into the more anamalistic side that wanted to devour her. Her scent was irresistable to him and I think he was fascinated by her as well because he couldn't read her mind (you will find out why in the third book by the way). If he had given into his desire for her blood then, he would have killed her not "turned" her. You (according to Stephanie's world) would have to have an enormous amount of self restraint to bite and not finish her off - example would be the last scene where he had to be told over and over to let go of her when he was sucking out the other vampire's venom. He didn't just let her turn then because he didn't want her to become the monster that he saw himself as.
P.s. Also IMO, since Stephanie Meyer basically sucks at writing (again, just my opinion), a lot of things just do not make sense.
Sometimes, I felt like I was reading an 8th grade creative writing paper that just wandered around in circles. And there are some inconsistencies within the books. It's just a story - total brain fluff.

Jodi, I tried reading an adult-oriented vampire novel. Now, I'm no prude. Honest. But damn...that book was waaay over the top. To the point where I found myself a touch annoyed. It was almost as if sex was THE whole point of the story. *thinks* Maybe it was, and I was too dorky to pick up on it.
To be fair though, I'm really tough on authors. For example, the Twilight series is a great concept. However Meyer, in my admittedly critical opinion, is not a good writer.
I completely agree 100%.....her use of adjectives is just unwarranted and only serves to lengthen the torture at times.
I didn't think that either the movie or the books had significant character development, such that I would care greatly about them.
Sookie Stackhouse on the other hand - I am DYING to know if she winds up with Eric - and I love Alexander Skarsgard's portrayal on True Blood. Plus with the whole smut stuff I can suspend my disbelief more - it is believable that vampires lust physical interaction as much as blood...the whole Edward wants to keep Bella virtuous and he is still a virgin at 100 years old is just too much.

Kim you are sooo funny. I am the same way. I like to read the end of a book before I read the begining just to see who dies, . . .my husband says it is very When Harry Meets Sally, . . but the suspense just kills me. I usually Wikki everything to find out the ending. When I got into watching Alias I was glued to the computer reading the synopsis to every single episode before I would watch the whole series, . . it is 5 seasons long. This is how I trained myself to read fast. You should of seen me everytime a new Harry Potter book came out.

Yes, after reading all of the books, he definitely truly loves her....Bill is useless......I didn't care much for him either at first - but the third book is now my favorite - probably because it is Eric-centric.
What did you think of Quinn - ugh, I hated that character.

tons of romping here - don't mistake me, these books will not raise your intelligence level, but they sure are a fun read, especially after a hard Cathe workout lol

I feel like Jason is one of those underdeveloped characters - absent in whole books and then the hokey marriage, etc. Bizzare turns for him and unexplained absences. The whole need to make him supernatural too is "eh" for me.
True Blood is very good at creating onscreen sexual tension; very rare for many serials....good stuff
I cracked up at the scenes with the waitress that is killed in episode 3 or so...she is such a hooch in real life - I used to see her all the time downtown going at it with the kid from third rock. then i read or heard she was married - yowsa!

Actually, there is no "Edward wanting to keep Bella virtuous". It has nothing to do with that and everything to do with him not wanting to kill her on accident. Read book 4.
I'd have to go back and re-read the books, but I don't remember them ever saying anything about Edward being a virgin either. You might reasonably assume that though since he was from a completely different time period when being 17 and a virgin was actually normal.
