Natasha Richardson

I am so saddened by her passing. She was a beautiful actress and I'm so sorry for her family that she leaves behind.

How does something like this happen? Would a helmet have saved her?

It sure does make one appreciate the beauty of life.

I know, it's just such a freak acccident, so sad :( To think of the trivial things we worry about in a day, and then something like this happens...

This makes me know even more that I never want to try skiing! I still vividly remember Sonny Bono's fatal skiing accident, right on the heels of the Kennedy guys also fatal skiing accident.

I worked neuro-trauma ICU for several years....they haven't released details but likely a couple scenarios:
1st,that she had an aneurism(no head smack)that ruptured(or an arterio-venous malformation)that ruptured slowly, causing her to fall/pass out, seemingly recover, then wammm, her time was up - once that blood inflitrates the brain, its like pouring water on a battery........from a medical viewpoint, watching it happen, helplessly,as I have, its horrible...
2nd - she took a smack on the head and hit in a freakishly vulnerable spot - like the temple, mid temple between temple and ear, or another part where the skull is softer, cracked a bone, hit an artery ,or more likely, since it was slow, a smaller vessel...got up and walked around, then the leak sped up and got her....I've had pts in on observation, and then there was nothing we could do to save them....its likely whats called an epidural hematoma - bleeding within a dangerous part of the brain..
I was heavy hearted all day...my friends in NY said the transplant folks had arrived on Monday night, so likely the family is going to have this beautiful woman live on and save the lives of so many other suffering people...
Liam Neeson always seemed so tickled by his family,he must be a broken man......GOD-how tragic!!!Never gets easier to hear things like this does it?

In my years in the unit,we saw plenty of injuries with and without helmuts....but the ones who wore helmuts always.....always actually recovered.....in my time there anyway....

I still don't understand why people don't wear helmets while skiing or boarding. I have been skiing since I was 9 years old and when helmets came out around 15 years ago, I started wearing one while skiing and I don't every feel comfortable while on the hill without one on.

Both of my boys race snowboard cross, and they aren't even allowed to train without a helmet on. They wear them all the time, even while waiting to race. I find they are warm and comfortable.

We ski at a large Canadian resort and the Canadian regulars all wear helmets, 70% of the Canadian tourists, mosts of the Japanese tourists wear them, about 40% of the Europeans and I would say less than 10% of the American tourists wear them.

I hope resorts will start making them mandatory on hills to help prevent these type of accidents (Nothing worse than seeing someone's head hit the hill like a watermelon).

This is weighing on my heart. I am so saddened by her death in this tragic accident. And my heart goes out to her husband, children and other family.

This is such a freak and tragic accident. I'm really heartbroken for the family.:(

Interesting statistic...I'm a Northeastern skier (ice skier ;) ) and my observation here is that vastly more people (Americans and non-Americans alike) wear helmets than not. I couldn't give an accurate stat, but I'd venture at least 75% wear helmets. Everybody I ski with (all American) wear helmets.

Yes - I'm truly upset by it. :( I can't help but think Liam Neeson is shaking his head & thinking - that's all the time I get - I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. You really have to appreciate your loved ones ever single second. This is very sad.

So sad! :( I was really hoping she was going to pull through. Her poor husband!

The one thing that struck me in all the articles is that they kept mentioning she wasn't wearing a helmet like that was unusual. I've never seen anyone other little kids or extreme snowboarders wearing helmets on the slopes. I hope it starts to become the norm for everyone, but it's not like she did anything out of the norm by not wearing one, especially on the bunny hill.

I'm not normally disturbed by celebrity deaths any more than I am by average person deaths, but for some reason this one is really getting to me. Partly b/c I really loved her acting--she was in some really fabulous movies & I can't say I've ever seen a bad performance by her. Partly b/c it could've been an easily treated minor injury instead of fatal.

I can imagine Liam sad b/c he didn't get to say goodbye, but I imagine even more the guilt he must feel for not forcing her to go to the hospital immediately. :( I suspect it's something that'll haunt him forever.

He actually was on set filming a movie and wasn't with her when she got hurt. I think by the time he got to her, she was already hospitalized. :(

Yes - that is what happened. The weird part to me too is that it wasnt that big of a fall at all. She was on the beginners slope. She got up, laughed and walked back to her hotel room. It was an hour or so later when she started having problems and within hours was brain dead.

This really struck me in that she has always seemed to be such a great person, actress. I have always been a fan of her and her sister Joely. Howard Stern was even talking about a conversation he had with her just a week ago and what a lovely couple they were.

The other part that hit me most was her 2 teenage boys. My boys are the same age and I just couldnt imagine how horribly tragic this is.

Very sad....

I remember when she and Liam met doing Anna Christi on Broadway. There was a story on one of the entertainment shows and everyone was talking about their unbelievable chemistry. Then they showed a clip of them together and it almost made you blush. I can't imagine what it would feel like to learn the love of your life was taken in a freak accident. Then to wake up the next morning and realize it wasn't a bad dream. I'm just sick about this.
