My "vicious" pit bull

RE: My

Shelly,

She is precious and adorable!!!! I love the patch over one eye, classic!

I wish that more people could know the truth about pit bulls. They really are a very loyal and loving breed. I was reading an article about the myths about this breed. They were saying that if you want a guard dog, then a pit bull is NOT for you!! It said that pit bulls have such a loving nature, even towards strangers, that they are more likely to lick the person to death that would be trying to break in!!

Also, Lorie (lederr) on this site posted a really good link of how to spot a pit bull. I think there were 20 or so breeds and it took me 8 tries (and I am dog lover!!!) to guess which one was actually a pit bull. Pit bulls often get the bad rap for attacks when really they are other breeds.

Spanky is adorable though, thanks for sharing!!!!

RE: My

How adorable! My DH and I rescued(temporarily...we had to give him away after we found a good home;( )a 6 month old pit bull back in January. Someone just let him loose! He was the sweetest dog. He just wanted to be held and loved. We still talk about him all the time. We couldn't keep him because of the rules at our apartment, but I know he has a good home now. Pit Bulls can be real sweethearts. It's a shame they have gotten such a bad rap and that people train them to be so vicious.

RE: My

Thank you Kassia and Rose!

That is so true about them not being good guard dogs. She is such a coward! She hates going out at night.... afraid of the dark!!

RE: My

Shelly - one of the best Search Dogs I know is a pit - and one who was used as a bait dog in fighting. She is missing her right ear, but she's so sweet that when she "found" me (I was hiding, playing the lost person), she about licked me to death. The little sweetie.

And one of Jimmy's favorite playmates is a Pit - he sounds ferocious - what a play barker - but he's just a little doll.

I hate that idiots are using these incredible dogs for dog fights. Give your lovely Spanky a hug and a kiss for me!

RE: My

Shelly,

Thanks for sharing and starting this wonderful thread. What an adorable pit bull Spanky is! Most people know Gizmo's sad story. Here's his picture again. He is going to be on the cover of the next issue of our city's Animal Shelter's newsletter that comes out next week. I think he needs a publicist! He's the sweetest pit bull. This is the picture they're using that my DH took:

RE: My

Hi Shelly! How are you doing? My sweet 14 year old Alfie dog had to be put down the beginning of April. We are just now starting to look around at shelters for our next perfect friend and I have noticed a very large percentage of homeless dogs are pit bulls. I've been wondering if that is due to their reputation that they can be vicous or if owners of this breed are predominantly irresponsible. Perhaps a combination of both? As for myself, I would never adopt a pit bull because of the reputation that they have. It may be true that they are sweet dogs but I would never risk the safety of my 5 year old daughter based on anecdotal evidence contrary to the horror stories I have heard. It's quite sad seeing those poor dogs caged up in such large numbers and I am glad that there are people like you and the others here who give them loving homes. I think we'll stick with a mixed breed terrier. They don't shed their wiry hair and I like that!!! Ooooh! I simply cannot wait until we find our new dog.:)

RE: My

Suz,

In that big picture, Amber looks like the Cowardly Lion (my favorite Wizard of Oz character!!!).

So cute!

RE: My

Awww, she's adorable! I agree w/previous posters, I'm so sick of pitbulls getting a bad rap. They're just like any other dog, a happy home makes a happy puppy. :)

RE: My

You know, looking at these pictures makes me wonder if my mutt has some pit bull in her. She has the build and coloring of a small-scale Rottweiler, but her head shape looks exactly like these photos.

And like those here, she's a real sweetie, and not aggressive at all.

RE: My

Elaine - I think the reason that there are so many pits is because of the increase in dog fighting amongst the gangbangers. It's very sad, actually, and while I do not blame you for your caution with pits, please note that there is not one recorded incident of a pit who is spayed or neutered attacking a human. Not one. Enjoy your new dog! Maybe you'll want to consider an Aussie mix - he or she can be a great running partner for you! :+
