My doxie had back surgery today

Kimenem

Cathlete
:( This is her second surgery. Her first was only last April. We caught it early this time because we watch her closely and noticed yesterday that she wasn't acting right. We decided to take her to the emergency clinic at the university where she had the 1st surgery. We left last night around 9:30pm and arrived at the clinic around 12:30am. They kept her and we found a hotel but didn't get settled until around 2am. We brought our other doxie who is NOT a traveler as I have learned :p This morning, they called and said they thought it was her back again so we went and told her we loved her and spent a few minutes with her and left her there for testing/surgery. They called this afternoon and said the surgery went well and she was already awake and alert. She had an easy and complete recovery last time so fingers crossed that this will again be the case. I swear, I can't believe we're here again! The dr said it wasn't anything we did wrong; they are just prone to back injuries. Ok, I can buy that. But we don't let her jump, play too rough, or run. If she re-injured herself just by moving wrong, I'm worried how many more times this will happen? Anyway, thanks for "listening."

Poor thing. :( I dread this kind of stuff happening to my babies. They are 5, 5, and 4 years old and they play rough together. :( How old is your girl?

Well, we can't decide if she was born in 2002 or 2003, so that would make her either 5 or 6. I THINK it was 2002 though. I need to look at her papers. Luckily, with this one, we caught it before it ruptured. She was only just beginning to show some signs. The dr said 25% of doxies will have this problem.

I am so sorry. I have a mini Doxie and I worry about her back all the time. I wish your Doxie a speedy recovery.

Thanks you guys. I was telling a friend at work about it and she listened and all but she doesn't have pets so I know she doesn't really understand. I didn't go to work today because I was 4 hours away getting her settled and waiting for answers. I know some people think it's stupid to spend so much money on a dog but I will use whatever means necessary to keep her healthy and I don't care if this happens 10 more times; as long as the doctors say they can fix her and she won't be in any pain, that is what will happen!

Poor thing. I guess it would figure, since they're such looooong doggies. Isn't it amazing what can go wrong sometimes? Praying for a complete recovery for your furbaby.

Kim,

You are such a good mom! Be proud of yourself for detecting those signs early enough to know to get prompt attention. Disc issues can go south quickly if you wait too long - time is of the essence. Good job!

I'm sure she'll recover just fine. And who knows why dogs or people blow discs for doing nothing! I've heard of people blowing discs while opening the shower curtain, brushing their teeth...silly stuff.

Hey, I herniated a disc in my neck 6 years ago when I was looking at a hamster -so there you go!:p

Wishing your sweet lucky girl a speedy recovery!
Heidi

Kim,

Hugs and prayers for you and your baby.
My heart goes out to you. You are such a loving mom:)

Another Doxie mom here. I'm glad to here your baby is doing well after surgery. They are such wonderful dogs. Sorry you are going through this. Hope the recovery is fast and easy.

Hi Kim..I'm so sorry that Mindy had to have a second back surgery. :( We've talked about my experience with doxies and back surgeries (we've been through 3 between 2 dogs) in the past so you know that I completely understand what you're going through. I'm so happy that you were able to get Mindy in before the damage got worse. Believe me, you did nothing wrong. We are very careful as well about letting the boys jump from high places, no tug-o-war play or really rough play, etc. I've actually become somewhat of a hypochondriac when it comes to my dogs. Whenever I hear them yelp or see them walk funny I freak out and give them a complete body check. I'm sure you can relate to what I'm saying.

When it comes to the cost, well, you're not stupid. The amount of money we've spent could've been a nice down payment on a house or a couple new cars. We have no regrets, we love our boys, they are part of our family.

Mindy and Jax are so lucky to have you as a mommy. :)

Not sure if my long-winded post helped at all. I just wanted to let you know that I understand how you're feeling. If you want to pm me to talk anytime during Mindy's recovery I'm here. :) Just make sure you keep her in her crate for at least 4 weeks. I know how hard it is to not give in to their begging and cute little pathetic faces when they are starting to feel better those last few weeks.
BE STRONG ;) and give Mindy and Jax a good belly rub for me. Take Care!

Chastity / Kim - What are some of the signs of problems, just so I can be on the look out. Just basically acting "off", not being as active??? I've been trying to keep mine off the furniture (we tried stairs for the bed and couch, but they will not use them or they fall off of them cuz' they're too long for them), but Dakota is a wild dog when it comes to playing and running around the house with the other 2. If build has anything to do with it, I'm more worried about Montana. He is so long, he almost sags in the middle.

Wishing a quick recovery to your baby!!

It is refreshing to see so many pet lovers that love their pet as I do!! and no you are not silly .. I would so be there if my babies needed surgery - help - whatever ... many that dont have the honor of having that bond w/their pets may not understand .. but know there are a LOT more out there that do understand!!! Hope your baby gets well soon!!!:)

Just reading these posts has made me cry. Got an update from the clinic this morning and they said Mindy is doing very well. Last time, the day after surgery, maybe a little sooner, she was walking and peeing on her own. This time, she can't use her back legs yet, even though she was walking fine when we brought her in, and she can't pee on her own yet. They said they expected this and it's not at all unusual, probably because of the scar tissue from the first surgery 9gets worse before it gets better). But that was news I DID NOT want to hear. They said it normally reverses pretty quickly but I still don't like it. She did give the girl lots of kisses this morning though so at least she's alert and comfortable. Thanks again.

Liann..First let me tell you how much I love your weiner dog pics. I make a point to look at them everytime I log onto the forums. :) I know how hard it is to try and keep them off the furniture or from acting like crazy dogs. We just do the best we can to catch them jumping and when they start to chase each other around we let them go until one of them slides into furniture or a cabinet. :p Tucker is really famous for his body slams into the front door, it's pretty funny but that's when the rough housing stops. ;) I figure that we can't keep them in a bubble, they need to be able to play and be happy dogs. :)

As for signs, here are a few that we experienced:
-they stop eating or drinking
-they isolate themselves (our two boys hid under the bed)
-if they do try to walk they will do it very cautiously and hunched over
-they may yelp if a certain movement causes them pain
-they shake a lot
-they lose their balance and their hind legs may start dragging

Ryan (DH) and I make a point to give the boys little back checks every week, especially Tanner since he's had the surgery. Not sure if it matters but it makes us feel a little better. We take our thumb and index fingers and massage down both sides of his spine starting at the base of his neck down to his tail. We also give them both joint care supplements in their food. It's important to keep them at a healthy weight too. Sounds like you're really going to have to keep Montana's weight in check since he does sag a bit in the middle already.

Our babies sure are high maintenance! :p

{{{HUGS}}} to you Kim. I know how stressed you're feeling. Great news about Mindy. It's completely normal for her to not be able to walk or pee on her own right now. We had to help Tanner for about 5-7 days after surgery b/c he couldn't hold himself up. It's going to take some time and patience but just keep reminding yourself that she's going to be okay. ;)

Thanks Chastity! :) All of the wieners are at good weights at the moment. Cheyenne was a chunker there for a little while, but we took care of that quickly and actually measure out their food now. Montana just looks like that slinky dog in Toy Story. I swear he moves in 2 sections - the front and back have a mind of their own! I think we'll start doing the weekly back checks too. I'm so paranoid about it! :/ If anything happened to one of my wienies, I think I would need therapy. :(

:D:D So funny!! Slinky dog was my favorite character in that movie. :)

I understand your paranoia. Tanner is ultra sensitive and tends to yelp about anything and everything. Seriously, he yelps if he steps on a blade of grass the wrong way or if a fly starts buzzing around him. He's a bit of a sissy dog but we still love him to pieces. :p:D
