My boys first day at doggie daycare/kennel..

I dropped off our mini dachshunds Tanner and Tucker for their first evaluation today and I'm a nervous wreck. I feel a little silly but this is normal right..lol! We've never taken our dogs to a kennel but we figured it might be good for them to socialize and if it all goes well we can start boarding them for a couple days and actually go away somewhere every now and again. :) I'm fighting the urge to call up there and see how they're doing. I have to pick them up at 4pm. I may just get there at 3:45 though..even if I have to sit in parking lot. :D

Aw! I don't think it's silly......I actually think you're handling it rather well. I'd be an absolute basket case!

You'll have to let us know how it goes. I've considered it for my dogs before, esp. when I'm really busy & I feel like they're not getting enough exercise or attention. Do you mind if I ask about the cost?

When I dropped them off this morning I think I talked their ears off telling them about everything I could think of when it comes to their temperaments and what they like and don't like. I think if they would have let me I would've stayed the morning but I understand that it's better for them to get used to their surroundings without mom around. This place is really awesome and they have trainers and handlers there that actually work with them throughout the day. Their costs range from $25-$37 for daycare and $35-$47 for overnight. It varies based on what level of obedience and training your dog is at. Here's the website if you want to get a better idea.. http://www.stayatdoghouse.com/membershiplevels.htm

I'm excited for them but still nervous..

Chastity - I was a wreck the first time I kenneled Cheyenne and Dakota. We took them in for a visit prior to the stay too. They did fine, but I just feel that no one can take care of them like me. The entire vacation, I kept wondering if they were ok. They were kenneled for 2 weeks and it about killed me. Montana had to stay with my mom because he is NOT good with other people aside from my family. They came home in one piece, but I'll probably never do it again just because it stresses me out so bad. I HATE being like that though because it is really inconvenient. I'm hoping if we ever have dogs again after the wieners that I will somehow be able to look at them as just dogs and not children!

p.s. My babies did appear to have had a good time at the kennel by the way. They were pretty spoiled the entire time - had their own beds, flat screen tv and radio. They even had special snack times throughout the day and a recreation room to hang out in and play during the day. It took them a while to come down to reality when I brought them home! ;)

Earlier this year when I had to take my dogs to the vet for their check-up/shots, someone brought in their dog (a BIG lab) to be boarded while they went out of town. It was soooo funny because this dog was SOOOO excited to be there! My vet not only boards but does doggy day care and this dog went to the doggy day care on a somewhat regular basis and loved it.

I thought this might help you feel better about your decision to do this...some of these dogs truly love going to their doggy day care.

Jimmy, the boy in my avatar, LOVES his doggy day care. Just LOVES it. I've had him to several (he's very well socialized) and currently he's going to daycare on Thursdays and with the Dog Hikers on Tuesday (www.beyond companions.com - local group). They do a 1-2 hour hike, then come back, rest and then play together in the afternoon. I hike with the handlers on the weekend - great group of people.

If you want to call them, do so. It's like day care for your kids. If they sound upset that you're calling them, then it's not the right place. And all of the good doggie daycares encourage unscheduled visits. Some of the ones I go to even have little webcams so I can watch him when I want to. It's quite cute.

Chastity - Rascal has been going once a week to doggie daycare for the past 3 years. It's some of the best money I spend. He gets lots of exercise and socialization. I was also nervous the first few times I dropped him off.

The place he goes to is near my work, and I have a few colleagues who take their dogs 5 days a week. It's a daycare only facility (no weekends or kenneling).

Good point! Before I enrolled Rascal, I dropped by the daycare one afternoon unscheduled and the owners gave me a tour. :)

I'm the same way Liann..no one can take care of them like I can. I don't know how you did two weeks! I'm trying to work up to two days.lol! :p It is really inconvenient though when you can't just pick up and go away for the weekend. We've taken them with us in the past but I'm always afraid that they're going to make a mess of our friends homes. It so hard to not think of them like your children..especially when you have no human children. ;)

Thanks Jill for helping ease my stress. I know that they're doing fine..they would've called by now if something happened. I was actually feeling okay this morning until they gave me the waiver form to sign then I got a bit freaked! I know that's standard procedure though. Hopefully at their next visit they won't be clinging to me and barking when I walk out..that will probably help my stress level some too. :)

Christine..they actually mentioned this morning that it would be fine if I wanted to call to see how they were doing. They were sympathetic to my nervousness and assured me that they were in excellent care. This facility also has webcams and I'm looking forward to watching them if they start going there regularly. I can't wait to pick them up this afternoon to see how tuckered out they are. :)

Gayle..we're hoping to do the same thing with our boys if everything goes alright today...maybe every two weeks though. I'm going to ask them to give me a little tour this afternoon when I go to pick them up.

They are so handsome. I have a mini doxie and I want to take her to something like this too so we can go away for a day or two but I hate to leave her alone. She loves other dogs but is nervous around strangers.

I cried the first time I had to drop my babies at a kennel to be boarded! I've never, ever left any of my pets at a kennel before! The one I use is located out in the woods and they'll take them for a walk down one of the trails. My beagles adore that! I couldn't wait to pick my babies up when we got back from our trip.

I felt so guilty leaving them there the first time!
