Modified Pull Ups

Well, I feel stupid. I've been working out steady for about 3 years, and have made lots of progress. Have made some decent strength and muscle gains. So silly me, I got a pull up bar today finally, and I can't do even one measly unassisted pull up. I've been using strong resistance bands to simulate a pull up, but it's not the real thing.

So I guess what I'm going to do is use my step to stand on, and pull myself up with my toes just on the step, and just keep lowering the step down until I can do them without it at all (wishful thinking). Does this sound like a good way to do this??

Just another goal to work on....

its a new exercise in a way and using muscles in a different way so of course it might be hard. practice makes perfect. when i was able to go the gym more during the school year i always hit the assisted pull up machine and slowly but surely every few weeks i need less and less assistance. i couldn't do many but you know they say quality over quantity! as long as i feel toasted afterwards i am good. one day will work up to more but the is the fun of a fitness journey.

Don't feel bad at all, these are HARD!!

Here's another great way to modify and make progress:

Tie your reisistance band to your pull up bar. Bend one knee, stretch the band down, and place the foot of that leg on the bottom of the band. Now you might have to tie it several different times to get the right resistance, but this works GREAT.

Once you have the right resistance, keep one foot in the resistance band and assume pull up position! You will be able to do a lot more chins/pulls like this. As the days/weeks progress, lessen the resistance until you can do one unassisted and then go from there.

If you need a visual, I saw this on youtube. :D

I'm in exactly the same boat. I do enjoy trying to do pullups, though, even though I never actually do one.

You could try this: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/3-pullups

It doesn't work for me, but maybe it would for you.

Don't feel bad - I use my step as well. I'm actually going to try the resistance band though - I saw that video on You Tube a while ago, but I forgot about it. And as someone else said, as long as you feel like you really worked your muscles, that's all that matters!!

When I use a resistance band, I really feel it in my back, Using the pull up bar, I feel it more in my arms. I know you are using all those muscles together, but it makes me wonder if I'm actually working my back. I guess I am because my back does feel a bit "used' this morning.
