Mixing protein powder w water

Hi Cathe,
Someone mentioned in another post how you recommended mixing protein powders with water instead of milk. I was just wondering if this was to keep the calories low or if there was another reason behind it?

Thanks!

I mix mine with water for that reason, less calories. On rare occasion I will use milk if my calories allow it, it does make it creamier but water tastes great too! :D

I second that! I mix mine with a hand blender.....with water and ice. It's like a yummy vanilla shake. I look forward to it after my workouts.

Hope Cathe has time to answer this one......I'm curious too!

I reread the post, and Cathe says that on occasion she does mix it with NON fat milk. However, I read on another post (that I can't find) that if you mix it with water, your body absorbs it faster, so it's better for straight after a workout. :)

BUT I bet Milk would be nicer :)

I don't like the taste of it with just water so I use 1/2 skim milk and 1/2 water and it tastes really good. Oh, and I use Chocolate protein powder.

I make my whey protein smoothie with 1 scoop of powder (chocolate) and 1/4 c to 1/2 c. vanilla yogurt, a splash of skim milk (maybe 1/4 c) and about 4 ice cubes. It's usually my breakfast.

Try mixing into 1/2 cup plain yogurt. The yogurt is tangy and the powders are usually a bit sweet. Try it, its not too bad. I use the vanilla flavored.

Hi Melissa! You can mix in either one, but yes, using water instead of milk will keep the calories down. Also, right after a workout I want the protein to go straight to my muscles without a lot of digestive distraction so the plainer your ingredients the better this is for that purpose. On the flip side, if I am using a protein shake as more of a meal replacement, I add in low or non fat milk, wheat germ, berries, and in some cases even a scoop of nonfat frozen low sugar yogurt to give my shake more bulk so that I am not hungry in 15 minutes. Hope this helps.
