MIS--Do any of you do this with just dumbells?

If yes, can you give me an idea of the range of weights you use (I know that everyone is different). I currently only own 5lb, 8 lb, 10 lb (pairs) and then one single 15 lb weight. A barbell is on my list of wants, but as I exercise in the tv room and store everything there, my husband doesn't want one more piece of exercise equipment in there. UGH!!! I may just get it and store it in the basement. he may not even notice!!!

I do plan to buy another 15lb weight. What weights does everyone use most? I've been doing the Firm Cardio & Strength tapes for about 3 months now and am moving up from there to MIS.

Thanks.

Mary

I used to do it with just dumbells before I got the barbell. FYI, I use 5-15 lbs dumbells. I use more dumbells/weight now since I got stronger. I also suggest you get a 12 lbs dumbells.

Great! I'll make it a point to go out and buy two 12 lb and one 15 pound weights this weekend. I really want that barbell too!! UGH!! Too many wants and not enough cash!! For tomorrow I'll test out the tape with my ligher dumbells. Probably a smarter thing for me to do anyway since I've pretty much only been doing Firm tapes up til now and if Cathe's strength tapes are anything like her Cardio tapes, I have a feeling my body is in for a big SHOCK!! (this is good though, it is about time I shock my muscles a bit!)

Now can you tell me, if I buy the barbell can I think not worry about buying any heavier dumbells, or will I still need heavier dumbells as well?

Thanks for your help.

Mary

Even though eventually you might as well buy it all, as investing in dumbells and barbells is never a waste of money for me and I consider it something I will have for life. Well worth it.

I am not Haslina, but I would say you could get along for quite a while with just your dumbells for MIS, and if you purchased the barbell, much longer. I went to Play it again Sports and purchased a whole dumbell set that came with a rack and weights from 5lbs-50 lbs for just 150.00. 5 lb increments. A worthy investment. My husband never gives me slack about anything I buy, cuz he knows I can throw it right back in his face that I always use it!!(he never uses any of the "toys" he buys!!) Take care...Janice

LAST EDITED ON Jul-16-02 AT 02:23PM (Est)[p]I think you'll be set for a while with the addition of 12 and 15 lb dumbells. However, just my preference, I use dumbells instead of barbell for plie squats, so I do have heavier dumbells.

Just my 0.02.

If you are asking me if these are ALL the equipment you'll ever need, well... may be not. I only do Cathe, and I recently bought some platemates to go with my dumbells. Platemates are magnetic weights you add on to the dumbells, adding a little bit of weight at a time (called micro-loading). Seems like the spending never ends!

I only use dumbells, from 5, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20 depending on body part and exercise. I have made steady improvement with these and seen great results. As yet, I have seen no need to buy barbell but I will have to if my leg strength continues to improve.

Thanks!! Your comments are much appreciated!! I will plan to at least buy another 15 lb weight and a set of 12 lb weights for now. Then, as soon as I can save up enough, I'll buy the 20lb set. After that it is the barbell!!

You are all wonderful!

Mary

I think you'll be fine with the purchase of 12 lb dumbells and another 15 lb dumbell. I've been doing Cathe for a little over 3 years now and it wasnt until a few months ago that I finally purchased a set of 20 lb dumbells for a few back and chest exercises. I would start saving up for a barbell though...not that you absolutely "need" it, but it's so much fun to use!! I got mine at a place called Sportsmart. It came with plates to total 100 lbs, the bar is 5 ft long and weighs 5 lbs, the cost of the set was only $40. Another purchase if you dont already have these is a pair of weight lifting gloves. Sweaty hands can lead to injuries!! On a few posts Cathe has mentioned the Troy Lite barbell, I dont have any more detail on that one as far as cost, etc. goes. I think a barbell would make a wonderful Christmas present dont you???

I do it with dumbells sometimes when I'm too lazy to drag out my barbell. I really prefer the barbell, though -- I can lift a lot more weight with it and it isolates some muscles better because it stabilizes your arms.

I too exercise in the TV room, but I recently gave up on trying to put everything away -- it's strewn with equipment right now. :)

Stacy: Trust me!! I've already got my birthday gift list (September) and Christmas gift list prepared!!!! I want the 8 pack for my birthday in September and a barbell set for Christmas!!! I want the 12lb weights and the other 15lb weight right away!!!

I did MIS all but the leg/buttuck work this morning. I was short on time and preferred exercising my upper body. I used the 8lb weights a couple of times, mostly the 10 lb though. I also used the 15lb when it came to some of the one armed movements (wish I could remember the names of all the moves, but that will come with repetition!).

You've all been extremely helpful and now I don't feel as deprived for not having a barbell.

Thanks all!!
