I am having some health issues right now and am fairly new to Cathe's workouts. I own Maximum Intensity Strength/Cardio and the Pure Strength series. I am having difficulty with the level of intensity in the cardio portion of the MIC. Can you suggest another Cathe cardio workout that will get my hr pumping but not to the point that I want to fall on the floor? For interval training I am still doing Gin Miller's and Karen Voigt's old interval workouts. I need to update these as well. Thanks!

How about LowMax or SJP/SB DVD?

I'm sorry but what is SJP/SB? I am still trying to figure out all of these abbreviations.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi, Fitmom, and welcome too!

"SJP/SB" stand(s) for "Step Jump Pump" and "Step Blast", which are on one DVD from the Body Blast Series and sold as separate videos on VHS. I believe the Body Blast Series is the last series Cathe offered both on DVD AND video, so if it's videos you're after you can get them individually.

I agree with the suggestion about those two workouts as well as Low Max, which is only offered on DVD. You may also want to consider doing a step warm-up with another workout, and only doing the step segment of MIC. The first 35 minutes are increasingly high-octane floor cardio, I know, and can really pummel you if you're new to that intensity and/or are coming back from an illness.

One of our beloved Cathe-ites, "Lunacat", created an awesome Compendium of all of Cathe's workouts through the Hard Core series, and this compendium includes all of the common abbreviations of her workout titles as well as running times, equipment needed, emphasis (cardio, strength, muscle endurance, etc.). I'm sure if you asked her nicely she's send you one be e-mail. If you're interested, put up a post attention LunaCat on the Open Discussion and I'm sure she'd be happy to oblige.

Welcome again to The Cathe Fools.

What about the beginner/intermediate workout that Cathe filmed?

I don't remember the name of it and I don't have it but I've read it's a good workout but not as tough as her other ones.

Also, if you want to update your interval workouts you may want to try one of the IMAx workouts. Imax is the toughest of the three. These are intense but not nearly as intense as MIC. You can also opt to do only a few intervals initially and then add more each time you workout.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I find IMax to be just as if not more intense then MIC.

Try Step Blast & Body Fusion or Low Max. I can't do high impact stuff but still feel I get a decent workout from these--my heartrate gets right up there.

Hi, I guess this is where everyone's individual differences come in. I burn more calories with MIC than I do with IMAX and my perceived exertion during the workouts makes me feel that MIC is more intense than IMAx...perhaps it is the step breaks between the intervals, they are relatively low key, but I definitely go into my anaerobic heart range during the intervals...it gets there too during sections of MIC and for more prolonged periods of time during the hi/lo section.

I guess my health issue is not going away. My problem with the MIC is actually the step portion. I have no balance and can't go at full intensity without killing myself on the step. I said cardio originally but meant step. OOps! I can do somthing simple and get the HR up there no problem, but lots of choreography and step just isn't working any more. The cardio portion of that tape is great because a lot of it is in place. Thanks for the tips, any more will also be appreciated!

fitmom:

I have a health problem that prevents me from doing much step, too. I suffer from asthma. Here's what I do: I do the step workouts without the step. In other words, I do all the same footwork, but I'm doing it on the floor with no step. That gets my heartrate up quite nicely and doesn't leave me feeling like I'm about to keel over from lack of oxygen.

Also, while I've been working out with Cathe quite faithfully since last September, Im still feel nowhere near ready to tackle MIC. I might be able to do segments of it, but I would have to take lots and lots of breaks to get through the whole thing.

With that said, my favorite cardio/step workouts are 1) Lowmax (all step premix), 2) Step Blast, 3) Rhythmic Step. I also have Body Fusion and enjoy that one, as well. It is more beginning level, but it still gets my heart rate up and gives me a good sweat.
