Marley & Me

MAYNARDSMOM

Anyone seen this yet? My DH & boys & I are going this afternoon. I have read the book & it was great. I've heard it's good but sad. Should I take tissues?

I wanted to see it, but I don't do well with animal movies. I'm not a cryer, but animal movies open up the flood gates. I should read the book I can sniffle, snuffle, and wallow in private!

yes TAKE TISSUES! I am not a crier. We took my 3 kids to see it Friday -- day after Xmas, needed to decompress a bit. BAD IDEA! All 3 kiddos were SOBBING by the end of the film - and THAT'S what had me crying. Good luck.

My SO's kids (boy age 11 and girl age 14) saw it last week and they both said they (and everybody else) came out crying. They didn't know it was sad and were a bit disappointed.

I had no idea this was a sad movie. I wanted to go with my DH because I thought it was a happy movie. One of the last times DH and I went to the movies to get away from everything we say that stupid, stupid I Am Legend. I obviously did not know what it was about and thought it would be good because Will Smith can cheer anyone up on a bad day and even he didn't do it in that movie. Thanks for the heads up.

I wanted to see it but something told me when I saw the previews and the main guy character was walking up the hill w/the lab that was older...that it would not turn out like "I" would want it too....

Thanks for the info - I will not see it.....I don't know if it's because I'm SO attached to my dear Harley, but sad pet movies aren't for me anymore!

My boys (13, 9 and 7) want to see it , from the commercials on TV. It looks so funny! But there is no way i will take them if it ends like the book does (which from what it sounds like, it does). I cry at EVERY movie, no matter happy or sad, so this one scares me!

On the other side, I heard Bedtime Stories was VERY good! I think I might take them to that Friday...

I saw this movie on Monday and I can't stop thinking about it :(. I thought it was going to be a light hearted movie. I adopted a new fur baby a few months ago and she is my little Marley . Boxers are already a handful, but this one is quite the challenge. I thought the movie would be a way to see the humor in things.

OH MY! This movie was a heart wrenching tear jerker. This movie was a bad choice for me and my DH; it is very true to life in many ways. Let's just say it was just too soon for me & DH to see this movie. There were too many similarities and reminders.

I don't think it is children's movie at all. At least this wouldn't be a movie that I would have liked as a child. Besides the parts about Marley, it deals with issues of marriage and family through the lifespan. The children in the theater seemed bored and were playing in the aisles and at the end of the movie when the dog got their attention again they were crying. I would have been upset if I went to see this movie with a child (and the parents that I saw appeared upset) and I would have set some time aside to explain some of the life events (I'm not referring to sex or violence).

I'm just chiming in because I wish I would have known before I went to see the movie. I didn't read the book so I didn't realize how the story was going to unfold. I thought the movie was well done for what it was, but I found that the promotion of the movie didn't prepare me for the type of movie that it turned out to be.

It definitely is sad, but its funny too. It goes through all the trials and tribulations of raising a dog and a family and how sometimes you just want to give up (both on the dog and the family) but some how we manage to get through it all, happy and sad.

I got a different feel from the movie. I loved it and I fell in love with all my past doggies (especially my clumsy crazy slobbery lab with a heart of gold) all over again. I loved the reminders of how crazy pets can make us, but how we end up loving them so much. I thought it was a fun movie, but it was real and owning pets is real and there is a life cycle that comes with them, but the rewards are great and I thought the movie showed that very well.

I thought Jennifer was a doll and Owen did a great job.
As I was watching it, I wondered if it was a kids movie and didn't really think it was. You'd have to do some explaining, but I loved how the kids in the movie handled it in the end...it was really sweet.

ETA: YES! Bring tissue!

OK, we just got back from seeing the movie so here is my review:

I did think it was good, even with the sad ending. The dog can't live forever. Did have me bawling. I will say I think the book was better, more details & I think his passing is different but it's been so long I can't remember.

Overall I would say 2 thumbs up or paws in this case.

I like what he says in the movie regardinghis marriage "mend it don't end it!" Great words to live by.

I'm thinking of taking my 10 yo to see it. He just finished reading the kids version of the book, which includes the sad ending. I'll talk to him though first and see how he feels about seeing it. My sister's nanny went and saw it right after her Grandfather died and my sister thought she'd read the book and knew the ending or she would have stopped her from going.

I am glad I found out

I thought Marley and Me was an upbeat movie.

I don't know how it ends, but I do know I do not want to see it now.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Best wishes,

Amy

Hi Tami!
YES, bring tissues!!! It was a really cute movie, but definitely sad. Most people think it's a "feel good" movie, which for the most part it is. But you have to know that it tells the story of the "entire" life of a dog, if you know what I mean. I thought it was an excellent depiction of how animals love us unconditionally and see us through all of lifes ups and downs!

I saw it with my sister and it was a little tough because we lost our family dog this year to old age. My sister read the book though, so we wanted to see the movie together.

***FYI - not sure if this is a "small child" warning or not, but there are lots of women prancing around in bikinis in this movie since it takes place mostly in Florida. Plus, one "mini" make out scene with Owen Wilson & Jen Anniston - but nothing major. (no nudity) Plus, there are other adult themes that deal with pregnancy and difficult marriage trials, and of course the inevitable end for Marley.***

Enjoy it though and don't forget the tissues!!

Just an interesting little tidbit here........did you know that it took 20 dogs to make this movie?? And who knew dogs could be so trained....I guess each dog had their own "talent" ...like ones who can pee on command.....etc... How do you find 20 talented dogs that look just alike??? I think some were puppy's, though ( I'm assuming Marley started out as a puppy in this movie?) I haven't seen it yet

Loved the book, so want to see the movie, although the book made me cry and cry. My Mom and Sister train dogs, they are so smart!( the dogs, but Mom and Sis are too!)

OK - saw it last night and it was very good. But very hard to watch with Duke getting up there in age. I was doing OK with the crying, just some quiet tears....until the little girl next to us started sobbing and then I lost it. I didn't bring my 8 year old daughter because I had heard it wasn't a kids movie. After seeing it, I didn't feel there was anything that would make me uncomfortable if she HAD been there, and she's already been through pet deaths and can deal with it. I don't hide death from her, and never have. It's inevitable and something that's important to learn. That said, I think she would have been disappointed in that it wasn't a Disney type dog movie. She would've been bored.

I heard the author was on The Dog Whisperer last week. I'm sorry I missed it.
