Liquid foundation suggestions for 40 something skin

Rather than spending more money on more foundation that's not working, I thought I'd see if any of you ladies in your 40's have a foundation that you love. I used to use a matte type of L'Oreal, but it is too dry for my skin now and seems to make my lines more noticable. I bought some Vital Radiance which is marketed to mature women's skin, but it's very greasy and doesn't seem to have any coverage at all. I don't want anything heavy, but something to even out my skin tone and not settle too much into the lines and wrinkles. I'm willing to buy a more expensive brand if I like it. I heard great things about Stila Illuminating foundation, except that after a couple hours it melts off your face. Maybe I should be looking at some Lauren Hutton makeup . . I dunno. Would appreciate any feedback.

I'm not 40-something yet (39 & holding :p ) but I learned in the last year or so that aging skin needs lighter foundation, not heavier. All this time I was thinking heavier foundation hides wrinkles only to find that it actually makes them show more b/c the foundation kind of collects in the wrinkles.

Anyway, back to point--I'm now using Prescriptives Traceless & I really love it. About $30 a tube & lasts quite a while. Also the woman at the counter convinced me to try a foundation brush & I was amazed at the difference betw. application w/a brush vs. application w/fingers--it goes on so much more evenly & smoothly.

If you have the chance stop by your local dept. store & let the salesperson at the Prescriptives counter do a color chart for you & recommend a foundation. I kind of go back & forth w/a lot of my makeup, but when it comes to foundation you can't beat Prescriptives.

I have the over forty skin and love Yves san Laurent {spelling?] {YSL} and love it. It has a lovely consistancy. I live in a hot humid climate and it stays put. I do powder over top however after applying. You can find it in better dept. stores.

There is a drugstore brand by Covergirl, Christie Brinkley is in the advertisement called Pure Radiance-I think that is the name. Basically its a tinted moisturizer that is beautiful on the skin, I was actually really surprised, as drugstore brands tend to look bad on the skin-at least in my experience.
I hate foundation, will only use a tinted moisturizer, I would rather enhance than cover up, so I spend alot of skincare stuff.
On the high end of things, Laura Mercier makes a lovely tinted moisturizer that is very good. The Stila brand has a powder that can be applied like foundation-with a big fluffy brush that covers imperfections lightly and looks amazing, but it looks bad in dry climates like mine-it settles into fine lines..if you live in humidity it might work well. Good luck to you, there are so many out there!

I agree with tneah. I am 51 and I can count on one hand how many times I have used foundation. People always told me that when I was 40 I would have to start wearing it. Well, I haven't. I spend lots of money and time on skin care products. Foundation always made me feel like I was clogging my skin and pores.

As we age, I think Lauramax hit it on the head. We need less not more with the makeup. I have seen older women with the foundation and like you say they enhance their wrinkles by wearing so much foundation. And the red lipstick has to go. The lines of the lips are bad enough, why do they want to draw attention to that?

I've been using Color Ideal by Lancome, which you apply with a brush (separate purchase). I absolutely love this foundation. I am 45, and had been using a Bobbi Brown one that I liked, but am so happy I tried this. You can go to a Lancome counter and ask for a free 10-day sample (that's what I did) to see if you like it.

With the brush, it goes on like silk... sheer yet good coverage. I can't say enough good things about it!

Two that I like: Mary Kay and Estee Lauder. Estee has so many kinds, I can't remember what I'm using, its' the kind that adjusts to your complexion.

I will be 50 next month and I swear by Bare Minerals....BUT, and this is a big BUT.....I have to use a cosmetic sponge to blend it in. Otherwise, my pores look huge. People always comment on how good my skin looks. Another hint...I NEVER EVER use it under my eyes as a concealer. I use a wonderful concealer by Lancome called Effacernes. It comes in a tube and is quite pricey...but it lasts forever. It gives excellent coverage without any "drying" effect.

I love Trucco Skintones Naturale Coverage. It's an unusual foundation in an unusual container. You can use as much or as little as you want depending upon how much coverage you need. You add a dab extra on blemishes or brown spots. I also always put extra under my eyes, right up to the lash line. Also, amazingly, it's not expensive, and it lasts forever! I've been on the same tube now for over a year:

I'm 51.

I'm adding a pic with me wearing the foundation so you can see how natural it looks:

I also swear by Bare Minerals. I use the blush and shadows as well. I switched a few years ago from liquid, and I am glad I made the change. I love the coverage and the light feel. I don't have the greatest skin (blotchy, large pores), but it provides excellent coverage.

I recommend Laura Mercier because I love her foundations and tinted moisturizers. I'm 28, but my mom is in her 60s and she also uses them. I swear by the tinted moisturizer and my mom uses silk créme foundation and secret concealer (I also use secret concealer because it is the only one that doesn't settle into fine lines under the eyes). However after seeing Nancy's pic I think that whatever she's using looks great and very natural. There are many lines out there and unfortunately you have to try and see which one matches your skin tone and skin type. I love make-up, but I usually splurge on foundation (tinted moisturizer lately) and concealer. When you find a perfect match for you, you don't need to use a lot of product and they last a long time. I also wanted to add that you should be careful with so called "illuminating" foundations and powders, sometimes they can be glittery and they can make lines and pores more noticeable.

Had to second the Laura Mercier recommendation.

I'm 39 but have several sisters, one of whom is 48. We use Laura Mercier foundation and it is FABULOUS. All of her makeup is great, but the foundation and loose powder are, IMO, the best anywhere. When I had my makeup done for my wedding last year, the makeup artist, who was supposed to be using products from another line (the line that shall not be named... shall I call it Voldemort?) said, "Don't tell anyone, but the Laura Mercier foundation and powder are my favorites -- way better than <insert product line here>. Can we use yours?"

I have normal skin, bordering on dry. Hope this helps.
