Lifting like girls

Today is our 41st anniversary and I'm hoping to go out to a nearby town for a nice dinner, but weather may not cooperate. Lib, baby steps! Focus on tangible things...stronger lifts, deeper squats etc, things that are measurable. The other will come! Our best battles are often waged against our minds! Hang in there, you got this!!! Justine, had to laugh at the mirror flexing, I too am guilty as charged! I keep looking for Arnold, but find PeeWee Herman!! (thicker PeeWee now cause I'm up 14 pounds)! I'm trying NOT to do much today, but may do some bwt squats etc. I was pleasantly surprised that those pulley crunches gave me some ab doms...yay yay yay!! Gonna incorporate frequently because the hanging stuff is hard on elbows. Have a great Sunday sistas!!!

Ok, here goes, finally made it happen. Yesterday was a Nia Bodyweight workout. AMRAP, single leg squat to box, close grip push-up, and palms down inverted row. 10X5 in 10 minutes. Bonus: Single leg glute bridge, lying leg raise, and drop outs. 5X10. Short, fast and a nice workout. I like this AMRAP stuff.
Today, I did the metabolic workout from ICE. I liked it a lot. Going to give other ICE workouts a try.
Hope you are all having a great Sunday.

Hiya Commandos!
Geez, it's been a hectic few days. I know I have a lot to catch up on, but I know there's an imminent toddler-waking, so forgive me for being brief -- I know I won't get to everything.

Tom, CONGRATS TO YOU AND YOUR DW! Wow, 41 years is amazing. Hope you had a great celebration!

Lisa, ITA about the present-overwhelm. We were also trying to be somewhat minimal in gift giving, but it STILL felt like so much. Sigh. It was really fun with DD, though. She loves opening presents, obviously. :)

Lib, blech, so sorry to hear about your in-law ickyness. That's terrible. Poor kid. He's lucky to have such a smart, caring, awesome, strong mom.
Great job on your workouts. And to echo what Lisa said, unless it's helpful to you to imagine us 'enforcing' your rotation, there's no pressure from us to do any particular routine. I think we're all guilty of rotational dilettantism here. ;)

Justine and Karen, hi! Keep being awesome! :) I know I have stuff to respond to but... mommy brain! I'll blame it on post-Christmas pre-menstrual mommy brain, OK?

Got back yesterday, got some squats in. I used my phone to video my squats to check for depth. This is a great tool that I'd never used before! Heaviest sets were 'mostly parallel' but not 'unequivocally parallel', so I'm going to work on that. 9 sets of 3-5 reps. A few at 145 for depth, heaviest was 195x3 (also ugliest, no surprise there). Then a superset of pistols with 5-10# extra and pullups. The extra weight on pistols (held over extended leg) actually helps to pop up, so I didn't alternate legs this time. I added the ball and band segments of To The Mat from ICE. This is a great workout! The ball segment is brutal. Band is tough, too, but I went to my heavier bands and loops (Cathe uses the medium ones). Feeling it today.

This morning was bench. 100 x 5, 110 x 2, 105 x 3, 100 x 5. Close grip 80 x10, x8, x8. Flys 30 x7 x8, 20 x15. Superset with 2x15# front raises 3x15 and skullcrushers x15 x15 x8. Finished with some pushups and rollouts.
Might do cardio this evening if it feels good. Tomorrow I'll do cardio or walk if I can, no lifting.

Must run! High fives all around.
Is anyone doing resolutions? (I probably won't do a resolution, but I'm going to try to reflect on what I can do better in the coming year.)
Roz

Karen, can you give some detail above t the ICE workouts? If you have done sets maybe a comparison? I did the original p90x, so that's what I compare things to.

Is ICE and STS hour long workouts?!

Thank you, Roz!

We are trying not to wash away in all the rain. Springfield had just over 8 inches by 5 pm last night.

Baby steps it is. I'm so thrilled with the deep squats!

I've only done one of the ICE series. The metabolic workout. It was a good workout. Got my heartrate up, But, when I finished, didn't feel like I wanted to puke. I think it would be a great series to get back into working out. You can make it as hard, or as easy as you like. I thought it was well done, and Cathe, as always very professional. All the ICE workouts are between 45-50 minutes long. The workouts in STS, range from just under an hour, to over an hour long. Some things I liked about P90X, and some things I didn't. Really can't compare this to P90X. Better music than P90X. Better workout crew. I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but I got very bored with P90X. Couldn't wait for the three months to end. Sorry if I have offended anyone.

Congrats on 41 years Tom! Hope you enjoyed your meal.

Roz, good idea videoing yourself. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to, though! Good work on the chest workout this morning, too.

Yesterday I do timed circuits- 20 minutes of single leg hip thrust (x12 per leg), handstand push up (x12) and twisting pull up (x5). I managed 8 sets, going just over the allotted time. Then did 5 rounds of mountain climbers (x10 per side) and squat thrust / prone jack (x10). Great workout and I loved the twisting pull ups. It was the first time I'd tried them, and didn't think I'd be able to do them, but they were very joint friendly. Basically they were pull ups using the suspension trainer, starting from neutral grip and ending up with a chin up grip at the top. Lovely lats doms today!

Lisa, have you sorted your copy of ice yet? Karen, those single legged squats to a box are brutal, eh?

Xx to all

Today was chest day and Lib, I know we are getting NOTHING like you guys (I live in northern Missouri) but my basement was wet again! Not to be deterred, I did 12 sets flat bench 6 sets inclined bench and 2 sets of pushups as finishers. I did my normal up down pyramid, and was able to do 200# on a shorter ROM (getting used to heavier). sets were 45x8 95x5 115x3 135x3 155x3 175x2 185x2 200x1(shorter rom) 185x2 165x5x5x5. For incline I bumped it up another 10# for first 2 sets 145x6x6 and dropped to 135x8x6x6x6. I headed for dry land (upstairs) and did 2 sets of pushups x35 x15. Sounds like everyone is kicking it in different ways! Roz, pistols alone are beyond me, let alone with added weight!! Lib, keep your head above water down there, have seen a lot of flooding pics down your way. Deep squats are cool, wish I could get there! Karen, those AMRAP wo's sound like a total body "blitzkrieg"! Congrats on being able to do them! Justine, bout time you wrapped up that wild and crazy U.K. party season and got back to your "M'Lady of Iron" status! Lisa, whats happening in your part of the world?? The recycling of toys was a great idea! Hope everyone has a great start to their week! At least college bowl season started well for me with my alma mater chalking up a W!! Happy pressing, curling, pulling, squatting, lunging.........(you know what I mean) to all!!

Speaking of love birds like Tom and his DW....Karen + AMRAPs = true love forever?! Wow! I think all your HoCo prepared you for your new love affair. Way to go! ITA on P90X. It does not have staying power. You can get great results with it, but it lacks the fun factor that Cathe provides regardless of how many times you've gone through her workouts.

Tom, working it out even when he has to wear his galoshes to do so! Dang about that basemnent. :( Enjoy your football!!! It is OFF at my house, LOL, since my DH is at work today, tomorrow, and Wed. I prefer cooking shows and playing with Duplo blocks, Frozen sticker books, and baby musical toys instead, ha!

Justine, I do love good quizzes if they are more like Trivial Pursuit. I prefer trivial trivia, if you will. I don't mind small talk. I can blather on ad nauseam. Even whilst sober. :) The LIS circuit bonus is a great metabolic add-on. It's a must-do when you get your On Demand subscription reactivated. Great AMRAP for you as well. Getting any walks in? I have decided to kick off ICE as my Jan rotation, since this week will be a weird schedule due to the holiday. Excited for it, esp after seeing Karen's and Roz's thoughts.

Lib, Justine nailed it. None of us here are in fitness paradise...well, we are in the sense that we strive to love what we do in our workouts...but we're all still striving, working, having ups/downs. There is NO comparison or competition here. You should feel so proud for what you've already accomplished in the past few weeks, not to mention the other marvelous things your body has done for you over the years--give birth to some super duper boys, overcome hardship, earn a college degree, work tough jobs....You are a true Commando sista. :) I get wanting to try out a series you already own. If you don't like JNL you can always move on to something else.

We were also trying to be somewhat minimal in gift giving, but it STILL felt like so much

Roz, I realized that grandparents are largely to blame--that's right, Karen and Tom, I'm blaming the grammies and grampys!!! ;) Just kidding. I love that so many people love my babies, can't blame my DH's or my parent's and other relatives for wanting to spoil them. Fab sweat sessions for you, girl. Are you staying put for the rest of the holidays?

Yeah, another random week ahead so more random workouts. Today was KCM's Bootcamp. Lots of laundry and catch-up housework today, then more gatherings later this week. We had family in town over Christmas. My little DD2 cries her heart out whenever someone besides Mommy or Daddy looks at her, let alone holds her. DD1, on the other hand, will talk to anybody of any age and be your instant BFF. Are these kids seriously from the same gene pool??? :)

Karen, no stepping on toes here. Also, I'm in a phase where I get bored after one to three weeks. LOL

I think I will look into ICE a little more. My other thought was to do the membership for full access.

Tom, where I live, it hasn't been that bad, but around us has been.

I spent almost 8 hours in the truck with a 13 and 11 year old............I'm going to bed!

Great workouts everyone!

Morning ladies!! Today was back day ..sort of. Still not doing pull ups so I subbed dumbbell pullovers. I did 5 sets using 40's 5x8. Next was deads and they went 205x5 sumo x5 conv 225 x3 sumo x3 conv 245 x 3 sumo x3 conv 275 x1 conv 225 x 3 sumo x3 conv. I just cant get the volume on this lift that you guys get, even at a lower weight, 3 seems like a lot! I have trouble at the heavy weights on sumo's because my hands are on the slick part of the bar and start to slip at the end. I wear gloves, but maybe need badger grips or something. I finished with pulley crunches using 70# and did x12 x10 x10 and then went right elbow to right knee x8 and left elbow to left knee x8. Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Lisa, too right, it was a very trivial quiz (I love trivial pursuits too- they made a uk version!)

Today I did HST, and it's definitely opening my hips and shoulders. I've started progressing one or two of the exercises, but the manual warns against pushing too hard, and recommends deeper and slower! I for through it in about 45 mins, so I added on a lwf2 (I think it was cops and robbers? KB <10mins). Felt good.

Yesterday was an all day hike. I'm feeling like I'm back in the routine.

Tom, I wear grips for heavier dls. Even if I just start to think about losing my grip, I get nervous and it ruins the lift. I've an assortment of gloves and straps!

Hope everyone's well

Good morning everyone. I feel like I'm getting back in my groove now. Last night was GSF2 KB swing 6X10@16kg and 4X10@24kg. Skater squat and pushup, 10X6 each leg, and each exercise. Glute bridge with Russian twist 10X10 each leg and each exercise.
Don't know what I was thinking because this morning was a bodyweight workout with AMRAP 10 minutes. Skater squat, pike pushup, and pull-up 7X10. the bonus was leg curl, I decided to do them on a stability ball, 5X15, jumping jacks,5X20 and scarecrow 5X12.
Looks like everybody is getting back in the groove as well.
Lisa, I love Nia. She's just so down to earth. Glad you enjoyed the podcast.
Justine, your hiking sounds so "fun." Would love to take off for a day.
Tom, like Justine stated, I also wear grips for heavier dls. I hate that feeling that your fingers are the only thing hanging on the bar. Nice workout, today.
I know you're still killing it Roz,
Good job with your workouts, Lib. I need a lot of variety in my workouts. Unfortunately, I get bored very easily.
Tonight will be volume 2 of HoCo. Can't wait, not!

I've just read some of the past posts. I must have done some speed reading, when I first read them. Missed quite a bit of fun and important "stuff." One of the most important bits of info, is Justine, the party animal. I want to be your party neighbor, Justine. The only party we attended, was a work party. Quite interesting, to say the least. Uh huh.

High fives to all on your workout efforts and a shout out to Lib for surviving an 8 hour car ride! Roz, you doing OK?

Karen, I went to an all engineers Christmas office party once. It was more riotous than I expected because of the generously stocked open bar, and it was in wine country California. But really, still not my fave. Justine's parties sound way better.

Today I did XTrain Legs, All Sections premix. Barre work is a weakness for me, and this workout provides just enough that I feel challenged but not suicidal.

Have a great evening everyone!
