LG Washing Machine

So I went off yesterday morning to buy a new washing machine. Mine of 6 years died in mid cycle - it was a Maytag Neptune and I was not getting another one. I was so happy to get my pretty red washing machine and now I am hearing of people having issues with the smell of it. I thought I had done my homework - got a great deal - salesman did not mention any problems with moldy smell. Please tell me there are people out there that have no problem with this washer!!!!! Anyone - Anyone...........

Michelle, we researched this machine thoroughly a few months back and all that we read was that you should leave the door open to prevent the smell. HTH
 
Yes--I got one about 1.5 years ago. The problem is in the filter, or drain, or whatever the heck it is. Water collects inside the washer & starts to smell pretty bad after a while. That said, it hasn't affected my clothes.

There's a little knob on the bottom left part of the washer, every few months you have to open it & let the old water run out. I don't know where in your house your washer is located, but hopefully it's somewhere with a drain. :)
 
I have heard that front-loading washing machines have a moldy smell issue, and I can attest that my parents have such a machine and it does have a slight smell. They've had it for almost 3 years I think. On the plus side, the clothes come out nice (no smell) and you only have to use a tiny amount of detergent. I don't know that brand, but I'm fairly certain it's not LG. It's possible that your machine won't have this problem.

I have an LG and I just leave the door open on the washing machine. I need to check out that drain issue. Works great otherwise!
 
Hi Michelle - I've had a front loader (Frigidaire) for the past 9 years or so and have never had any moldy smell issues.
 
Good - you guys are making me feel better about this! The washer is in the basement, so no problem with draining any water out. Our Maytage was a front load and you could hear the water in the drum when not in use, but it never never got a smell to it. I am just hoping it is few and far between, but if it happens to mine - she is going back!

I have a Sears front loader - always leave the door open a crack. It was starting to smell "icky" - not musty or moldy, just icky. I switched my laundry soap from Cheer (used for years) to Seventh Generation and have no more icky smell.
 
Sorry, but I had the LG washer and it was wonderful until it was about 3 years old. It quit mid cycle with water in it and they didn't send anyone out for weeks to fix it. The water sitting caused a HORRIFIC smell that never came out. I tried running bleach through it, then those tablets they sell specifically for the front loaders (3 at a time!) , then a spa cleaner the repairman recommended. The smell never came out.
On top of that, we had bought the 5 year extended warrenty and they came out 5 or 6 times , replacing EVERY PART of the washer except for the actual tub. The repairman said no doubt we would get a new washer if it quit again because there was nothing left he could fix, but NO , they would not approve a new washer.......they flat out told me, I was NOT getting a new one ! (really , really rude people that I talked to on the phone from LG).
It broke again and they did fix it again (sometimes I had to wait 6 WEEKS for them to come out with the part) and it worked, but the smell never left.
SO disappointing to buy what you think is a top brand, and pay for the extended warrenty, and then get a lemon and horrible customer service on top of it !
We recently bought Whirlpool Duet washer/dryer and I love them!!!!!!!
My clothes smell good again and everything works the way it should !

I hope you have better luck. I probably got a lemon. Just didn't have a good experience with any aspect of it.
No more LG for me !

I also have a front loader, not an LG. Does yours have a clean cycle where you just run bleach and hot water? I do this once a month to sanitize the washer and I have no moldy smell issues.
 
Reading this scares me a bit. I was thinking of upgrading both my washer and dryer. I'm having trouble getting my electric bill down. For some reason it is about $300 a month which is more than double what it usually is. I hear replacing your washer and dryer makes a huge difference. Can anyone tell me if the front loaders have lowered your electric bill?
 
I had a front loading Frigidaire for less than 5 yrs when it quit mid-cycle last year. It was still under warranty, if that's what you want to call it. They would supply parts, but we would have to pay for labor. My husband took it apart, and the only part in it that wasn't molded, rusted, and crumbling was the steel wash drum. After researching these types of machines, we learned that the only brand that is made with all stainless steel parts is Speed Queen. That's what we bought, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
 
I have an LG front loader, but just got it in September. So far, no smell issues. The owners manual does say to leave the door open until the inside of the washer and the seal around the door are dry so it doesn't begin to smell. The owners manual also mentions draining the water and cleaning the thing next to it (I can't remember what these things are called, but mine is on the bottom left front of the machine). I do both of these things. Hopefully I won't have issues, but some of the stories here have me a little bit nervous.
 
I have had an LG washer and dryer for 15 months now. I leave the door open a crack for a couple of hours after my last load AND open the soap dispenser (where water seems to accumulate a bit in mine). After that I close the doors and leave them shut until the next Saturday when I wash again. I have had no problems with sour smells.

I really like my washer (the hand-washable cycle is extremely gentle for all my bras). I sometimes wish I had gone whole-hog and gotten the steam-version, but otherwise it has been a good investment so far. (knocks on wood as she types....)
 
I am hoping that LG has addressed the smell issue and the newer ones are good. Thanks for your replies and I will make sure I do what the manual tells me so no smell occurs. I am pretty excited to get it - it is the same color as my Dooney & Burke purse :)

Just a crack!!!

I own a laundromat with about 50 front loaders. As long as you leave the door open you should not have any smells. You don't need to leave it wide open just don't close it compleatly (just a crack open). These machines clean far far better than a top loader.
 
Us Europeans have had front loaders for years. Pays your money and takes your chance. Some run for years some conk out. All mass made usually from generic parts. Not much choice between the cheaper makes. European homes usually have the washing macine in the kitchen due to us having smaller homes. front loaders slide in under the work surface. Top loaders common in N.America, Oz and NZ thou front loaders are increasing down under.
 
I have had the LG front loading washer and dryer for almost 2 years now. I haven't had an issue with any smell, but I do have a soft water softner which I think helps a lot.

However, I don't think I would buy another LG. It doesn't clean my whites nearly as well as my top loader, it leaks water out of the soap dispenser carriage down the front of the washer and the drain in the lower left corner gets 'plugged' with just a few strands of hair or a couple of small pebbles which causes it to beep that 'a service man needs to be called'. DH and I have to rock the washer back so that the water inside doesn't leak all over the place while we take out the filter, remove the miniscule amout of debris, and start all over again. I think it's a maintenance trap to keep the $$$ rolling in after the sale.:mad: I'm really not impressed. I do love the dryer though, but not enough to buy this pair again. Hopefully you have better luck with yours.
 
Your Neptune should still be under warranty?? (Mine is older than 6 years) and it died last year...... It was the motor.....Maytag sent us a new motor and dh installed it.
