Let's talk about some FUN movies!

As well made as Sleepers was, that film depressed the he!! outta me. I like my movies to be an escape from reality. That one was just too real.

So, Saturday I watched the Simpsons movie w/my dad. It was fun if you're a fan of the TV show, but it was really just an extended version of the show.

Sunday I watched the new version of Hairspray. OMG! That movie was SO much fun! John Travolta was absolutely hilarious. The first one was kind of dark & much edgier than the new version (I guess it would be since John Waters directed). That movie had a crazy cast--Johnny Depp w/the tattooed tears, Tracey Lords the porn star in a leading role, & a couple other strange birds I can't remember.

Anyway, it was highly entertaining, sweet, & had a nice message. That's my fun movie rec. Give me some please!

I just watched "The Heartbreak Kid" on Saturday and thought that was really funny. The 2 that I could watch over and over are The Sweetest Thing and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days.

I have absolutely no desire to see Sleepers, but DH and I went to see Iron Man a couple of weeks ago and LOVED it! But then, how can you not love anything with Robert Downey Jr.? Both he and Jeff Bridges were so good in this movie that I could overlook the poor casting choice of Gwyneth Paltrow (although she was good in this movie), quite possibly the most highly overrated actress in Hollywood, IMHO.

Johnny Depp & Traci Lords weren't in the original "Hairspray." They were in John Waters' movie "Cry Baby." The original "Hairspray" had Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono, Deborah Harry, Jerry Stiller, and of course, the wonderful Divine (may she/he rest in peace) and was far from dark. It actually was really funny and it was Waters' first mainstream-type film.

Michele - we loved Iron Man too!

Some of my fave fun movies: When Harry Met Sally, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love, Almost Famous, the Pirates movies....

Oh I remember the wonderful "Divine!" loved her/him.;)

My favorites are Dumb and Dumber and Duce Bigelow/Male Gigelo! I spelled that wrong...but those two goofy movies are so funny...:7 and Liar Lair is always cute, as is any funny Jim Carey movie before he started getting all serious.:)

Music and Lyrics was a cute movie I saw recently. It stars Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore and had a sweet storyline. For fun classic movies I love Grease (the first one and the sequel), The Blue Lagoon, and the 1980 Robert Altman version of Popeye, among others.

Some John Waters movies are great, others I can't get into. I love Serial Mom, Hairspray, and Cry Baby.

Other fun favorites include About a Boy, High Fidelity, I Heart Huckabees, Office Space, Idiocracy, Anything with Will Farrell (especially the most recent basketball movie, Semi-Pro)...I could go on and on I guess! :)

ETA: I forgot Hot Rod, which I thought was hilarious, in a stupid silly way. And then there's the fabulous Wes Anderson movies. Love them all, some of my favorites are Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Darjeeling Limited. OK I think I'm done now! :p

Tneah,

"Mama's got hamper’s of ironing to do, and my diet pill is wearing off!" One of my fave lines of Divine's in "Hairspray"!!!

"Duce" was hysterical! I loved "40 Year Old Virgin" too, but that's obviously not family friendly. :+ "Hitch" you can watch with all ages.

Now I'm curious to see "Iron Man."

I might've gotten the original movie wrong, but it was most definitely darker & edgier than the new version. No question about it. Have you even seen the new version?

Well, if we're gonna talk about older movies, I'm definitely w/you Amy, Grease is at the very top of my list. The first one though, not so much the second. And of course the other old summer classic, Dirty Dancing.

Also one of my favorite comedies ever, the Full Monty. I swear I can watch that movie over & over & not get enough of it.

I recently watched 27 Dresses and Dan in Real Life on DVD and they were both great. I usually watch one movie per week with my Netflix subscription and really haven't seen anything worthwhile and then saw both of these and loved them. I would really recommend them. The 27 Dresses is very lighthearted and cute. Dan in Real Life is just a great movie. Very touching and fun to watch. It gave me warm fuzzies :)

Oh, my new recent favorite is "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story." I laughed until I cried. You'll really appreciate it more if you love music and know some of the history of Rock & Roll. Jack White has a cameo playing Elvis, and, it's worth watching just to see Jack Black play Paul McCartney and Paul Rudd as John Lennon.

One of the funniest running jokes is how Dewey gets into all the trendy drugs of each decade. His drummer is always telling him not to try them, but then goes into how good they are:

Sam (Tim Meadows): "Get out of here, Dewey."
Dewey Cox: "What are y'all doing in here?"
Sam: "We're smoking reefer, and you don't want no part of this ####."
Dewey Cox: "You're smoking reefers?"
Sam: "Yeah, of course we are, Can't you smell it?"
Dewey Cox: "No, Sam, I can't."
Reefer Girl: "Come on, Dewey, join the party."
Sam: "No, Dewey, you don't want this. Get out of here!"
Dewey Cox: "You know what, I don't want no hangover. I can't get no hangover."
Sam: "It doesn't give you a hangover."
Dewey Cox: "Will I get addicted to it or something?"
Sam: "It's not habit-forming."
Dewey Cox: "Oh, okay, well... I don't know. I don't wanna overdose on it."
Sam: "You can't OD on it."
Dewey Cox: "It's not gonna make me wanna have sex, is it?"
Sam: "It makes sex even better."
Dewey Cox: "Sounds kind of expensive."
Sam: "It's the cheapest drug there is."
Dewey Cox: "Hmm."
Sam: "You don't want it. "
Dewey Cox: "I think I kind of want it."
Sam: "Okay, but just this once. Come on in."

LOVED Iron Man--saw it twice in fact. (tee hee, kids are such a great excuse to see a movie multiple times!) We just rented Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and still love it. It might be my favorite Indy movie because of the interplay with Sean Connery and the opening with River Phoenix as young Indy. The Truman Show with Jim Carrey (along with the earlier recommended Liar Liar) is wonderful. I love pretty much anything with Hugh Grant, except Sirens. The first Die Hard still holds up as a fantastic movie--Alan Rickman is such a terrific villain!

Re: The Simpsons Movie- our family loves to use one of Homer's line from that:
Bart: This is the worst day of my life!
Homer (in reassuring tones): It's the worst day of your life--so far.

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.
