Let's talk about change

Kathryn,

You have every right to think my comment unfair just as it's my right to say how I feel.

IMHO, and with all due respect, the negativity that's been most loudly heard on this board lately is from the many posters who consider themselves the "Cathe Elite" because they've been posting for a length of time that makes them feel they're somehow entitled while others aren't. They're fear of change being...well, to tell you the truth, I don't know what change they're afraid of because I never could get a straight answer.

I'm having "deja vu" here.
I used to visit a wonderful running forum a while ago. Small, very informative, and you could learn everything about running and training there. With occasional flare ups - usually only associated with running - it was very civilized. Then one day it merged with another forum, and it became much larger. After a while people demanded more than running, and basically topics were endless and unmonitored. Moderators changed monthly. Name callings, fighting, etc., happened every day, and the original runners eventually just left.
Here the situation is different. This forum and its content is part of Cathe's image, like it or not . She has to approve or deny the "changes" according to her taste. "Changes" in that running forum meant becoming low and vulgar. The "changes" in here don't look very promising either, but its Cathe decision to decide. Mari

Change can certainly be scary but it's absolutely inevitable because we can't always control our lives so we hold on very hard to that which we can. I have no illusions in regard to that fact because my most life changing experiences, the really big ones, came about because I had no choice. We have a certain measure of control about changes here though and you'd think we could blend old and new more smoothly. I participated in three threads in Ask Cathe in March and hundreds in the past and this was the first time I ever questioned if that was alright. I was a little taken aback by that. I have my diet down pat and my exercise program is pretty solid and now my burning desire to share information could be taken from me! :) Honestly, there are so many threads I have read through where I could have added something but didn't need to because it was covered by all you fabulous Catheites. I can't tell you if it was the old ones or the new ones because I didn't notice. I really need to get to know some of the fresher faces better because I have a tendency to come and go, in and out of my Cathe.com obesession and I don't know many of you as well as I'd like. I'm all for change and seeing Cathe grow and become even better than I could believe was possilbe makes me proud and happy. She's the most amazing role model I could have. Things are obviously changing here but it's got a lot of great old qualities which should be kept even as we grow as well as great new things. I hope we can keep the abbreviations becasue I've taken to calling Hardcore Extreme HC X and I just love that! :) I don't suppose I can get a consensus making me the queen? Just kidding!

Hi, Ruth! I am coming right along and feeling pretty darn good! How are you doing?

Alexis, I withdraw the queen request. I know you are the only Royal Majesty here! Or was that Yahoo?

Hi Bobbi, SO glad you're feeling good. I can't say I'm doing well, but I'm trying.

You have my vote...all hail Queen Bobbi!!

Trying is good. I'm thinking about you, sending out cyber vibes of love and encouragement. It's good to see you. :)

I am going to narrow my answer to forum changes, because I think that was the true focus of this thread. People come and go. Ideas evolve. Fitness information gets updated and recycled. In general change is constant but can't be forced on anyone. People have to come to change as they see fit. Change of this forum is decided by the board administrator. The rest of us are guests/members.

The guidelines, moderators, and forum descriptions are posted. Members are responsible for reading this information and complying. If any member has a suggestion, complaint, or needs clarification, then they need to write to the moderators. The members don't make change to forum guidelines/descriptions.

If you want the board to be welcoming, respond as such and ignore/report inappropriate behavior. The moderators will take action as they deem appropriate. If someone is lost, help them out/point them in the right direction. Keep in mind that this is a fitness forum that is visited by people of all ages and backgrounds. People come here for support and everyones' input is important. Translation of the written word is sometimes lost in cyberspace, keep a cool head and ask for clarification. You don't have to agree with someones input, but you should respect their right to voice it. Certain information is better kept off the internet, PM or e-mail is an option.

Remember, it's not what you say sometimes, it's how you say it,

I totally agree. What gets me is, if people are so new, do they even really know what they are trying to change? Those that want change that is.

Jordan- very well said!
Now I just wish Ebay would stop making changes! UGH! Can't even get the Turbo Lister to work right anymore because a bunch of idiots think it needs changed to be more difficult!
If it is not broken then don't fix it as Maximus just said!

I'm really new here, but I just wanted to add my two cents.

This issue seems to have a lot to do with respect. Would you start a new job and immediately tell people that the way they are doing things is wrong and that it should be done your way? I don't think so. When you start posting somewhere new, you should respect traditions and rules, even if they are unwritten. I haven't been posting for long, but it seems to me that the "old timers" have a lot of respect for each other, are supportive, helpful and VERY welcoming to newcomers. And if things are working well and everyone is getting along, why on earth does that need to change?

I think this Board is great. I've only been posting for a couple of weeks and I've already learned so much, not least of which is that there are a whole world of like-thinking women out there who are ready and willing to support each other when it comes to exercise, nutrition, health and life in general. That's a fantastic thing. Life is too short for backstabbing, cattiness and drama. If this Board doesn't offer what you want, then perhaps it's not the place for you. Personally, I'd like to hang around for a while.

I've been through high school already. I REALLY don't want to have to do it again at my age.;) :)

Shelley, It's so nice to meet you! With no real history of the past, you have stated exactly how I feel. Thank you for stating it so eloquently and without emotion.

It's hard for some of us to not get empassioned in our responses to people who don't understand, or care to understand.

I hope you DO stick around for a LONG time.:)

You know what could solve this? A forum for "fitness only". Leave the open forum, but designate it for all topics other than fitness. Then, add a "fitness only" forum. I have seen it this way on most other forums. I think up until now it was not needed here, but now there are so many new people (and, therefore, more female feathers to "ruffle") that I think it would solve a lot of these problems....

Change? Let's talk about change.

Change is good. You buy a pack of gum with a dollar and you get change back; you throw it in your purse and forget about it. Then you buy a bag of apples with a five-dollar bill and get change back, and THAT you stuff in your jacket because you're too lazy to stuff it back in your wallet. AND - change you thought you needed for the bus but got a ride for free falls out of your jeans into the washing machine.

Pretty soon, all this change accumulates, and you have some real money on your hands. Quarters especially. If you wait long enough and throw change into enough places, before you know it you have enough for dinner at Chili's.

I like change. My desk drawer is full of it. And my husband tells me I am too.

You know, my sister saved up all her change and had enough to buy drapes for her new house at Restoration Hardware!!!;)

Shelly, I'm proud of your sister for having the courage to change her drapes. Props to her. Whatever that means. I mean that.
