Ya know, I go out of town for a week and miss the fun.
I'm glad to see that this thread has sort of relaxed and not turned into a heated free-for-all as it had the early potential for doing. I agree with the general sentiments expressed so beautifully by my friends Miss Queen Lex, Also Queen Bobbi, Mish-Mosh Monarch Annette (oh, how I bow to you!), and Eloquent Newbie Jordan.
I guess I'm an old-timer -- I call myself that -- because I've been a forums regular since 1996. I really love and have come to depend on this place, even when (like my girl Bobbi) I float in and out as time and life permit and sometimes lapse into long lazy lurking spells. We started out here as a pretty small community and were very focused, for the most part, in our early discussions. As we got to know each other our discussions broadened and also deepened. We became a circle of real friends, I believe. Back then Cathe was a more frequent poster and joined in some of the non-fitness related chats as well.
But change was bound to come, as it does, and especially as our wee leader gained well-deserved fame. IMHO, Cathe has been savvy, astute and gracious in responding to expressed needs for change on the Forums and on her site. For example, she added the "Pregnancy" forum after many requests, and she did it right, bringing Sheila on board immediately for sound, expert advice. She added the "Suggestions" forum, too, to give us a place to focus future workout requests, and she added the Rotations forum when she saw that we were trying to collect and share rotations, and even began posting one each month herself. On her general site she's added more information about equipment, music, clothing, how she and the crew get ready for filming, and Cathe Gear. She moved into the DVD market. Chris has upgraded the look and feel and interactive features of the site periodically, too.
All of these changes were positive, and in keeping with Cathe's focus for her site and her business. She remains one of the most responsive and proactive instructors in the business, and despite her increasing fame she remains a genuinely nice and grounded person.
So I do think we owe her a little self-policing, and I'm not talking about slamming the lid on all things new or non-fitness related at all. I'm just saying this: If we as a group want to understand what Cathe envisions for these forums and what she DOES NOT want to see, we don't need to look very far. Look at the forum titles. Review Cathe's own posts, and pay attention to what Cathe and Chris freeze or delete. There's a common theme here, folks. I've said it before and I'll repeat it: we are Cathe's guests here, on her paid-for bandwidth and on a site that DIRECTLY reflects upon her. She has given us free rein to chat about a huge variety of topics, but I think she has a right to expect us to observe a couple of simple rules: (1) Think twice about what you post. Does it add something positive to the discussion around here? Is it really something that needs to go into Ask Cathe, or can the Educated Crowd help you? Is it related to the forums' general themes? Is what you're looking for available using Cathe's advanced search features, and have you tried that avenue first? And -- (2) Don't say something in content or tone that your mama would disapprove
or (my personal barometer) that you can't imagine Cathe herself writing. Keep your tone civil and your content clean and appropriate for mass public viewing (and if you wonder about the latter, re-read Cathe's own recent posts and think again about what she's deleted.)
Just my two cents' worth as usual.
Hey, for the record, I, too, change the skivvies every day, but I go farther and change them at bedtime too. Call me fanatic, you wouldn't be the first. ;-)
