Legs & Glutes

So I am trying to lose weight. Got a long way to go. I did Kick, Punch, & Crunch today and got in a great workout. Tomorrow Legs & Glutes is on the schedule since it came with the KPC DVD. Will this workout also benefit my weight loss or should I skip this one in favor of more cardio? Thanks all! Perhaps doing L & G and then going for a short walk to get some cardio would be a good idea?

Hi Snitker,

In my opinion, based on what I've read and what's worked for me, let me just say, DON'T SKIP THE WEIGHT TRAINING!!!! There are so, so many benefits to strength workouts that would augment and help you achieve your goals. You may already be aware of this, but muscle is very metabolic. That is, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, even when you're not working out. As you grow stronger, your metabolism wil rev up.

Too, weight training has an 'afterburn effect.' It keeps your metabolism up for quite some time following the workout. This of course will vary with the particular workout's intensity and weights used etc., but it can last for up to a day or more. So, while you might burn more calories in an actual cardio workout, weight work can keep your fire's going for an extended period of time post-workout. Also, depending on how challenging of a weight you choose for your level and how hard you work, you might be surprised. Leg workouts for me, can really get my heart rate up there. The calorie burn can be signifigant. That said, I personally wouldn't skip upper body training either. It all goes together.

In aging, there's a loss in muscle mass over the yers. I forget the percentage, but it's part of the reason weight gain as we get older became accepted as the norm. Weight training can off-set this negative by building more active, lean tissue. It's also great for the bones and helps prevent or deter osteoporosis.

Really, this is just a laymen's quick list on the subject. And while I tried to address information towards your question and concerns (I hope I succeeded in this), I want to add that it's all about balance. Over the years, I've worked to focus less on losing weight or looking a certain way or getting to a certain size. Interestingly enough, that's when, almost as a fringe benefit, those results started coming. I think there's something to that. I'm in this for the long haul. I want to be working out when I'm a grandma. Too much cardio (or too much of any singled out activity) can lead to overtraining (i.e. injuries) and then, you won't be able to do anything. The more I've branched out and varied my workouts and rotations, the more improvements I've noticed. And again, I can't stress this enough: focusing on a healthy lifestyle that I can maintain and grow within for years to come - that's what's done it.

It's been about changes and growth internally. Working out is part of that body, mind spirit connection for me. The more I've focused on right and sound behaviors, the more that's manifested in my appearance. That's not the primary motivator for me anymore. I spent so many years and so much energy fighting my own body. It's perhaps ironic that as I've been able to let go of what I look like as a prime motivator, that's when the really positive physical results really started coming - and staying - and improving. I'm forty two years old. It only took me about thirty years to "get it." It's been a gradual process and one that Cathe workouts have well been a part of. A huge part, really. At this point, I truly believe I'd work out if there were no visual/appearance "benefits" at all. It's something I love. It's such an important part of longevity and mental/spiritual connection for me (hope this doesn't sound too hokey).

Even so and having said all this, muscles ARE really lovely, aren't they? Just look at Cathe and her crew. And the other day, I was folding laundry outside my son's room and overheard one of his friends say, "Dude. Your mom's really hot. How'd she get so buff?" I couldn't help it. That made me smile - a BIG smile.

This response was pretty long winded. I hope somewhere amidst my "ode to fitness" I said something helpful. I hope you do "Legs and Glutes" ... and I hope you enjoy it.

My Best To You,
Lori

I love the Legs and Glutes premix "Leg Press Mania." It adds in extra leg presses, and this gives the whole workout something of a slight cardio feel. It's one of my most often used workouts!

It's kind of funny that this w/out got brought up...I pulled it out the other day after close to 2 years of not using it...I forgot what a "fun factor" this one had! I agree, for a leg workout it has more of a "cardio" feel to it...Use one of the premixes that combines with KPC...

I agree - you have to keep up the weight training no matter what. However, I have seen my best results when I focused strictly on circuit workouts. When I was doing the 3 days a week of weight training and separate cardio, I saw results - just not great results. I have been doing a rotation with a mix of the following:

Low Impact Circuit
High Step Challenge
Cardio and Weights
Bootcamp (Intensity Series)
BodyMax2

I do a circuit workout 3 times a week and then an additional very hard straight cardio from one of the following:

IMAX2
IMAX3
LowMax

I preordered the STS cardio, so my goal is to have more options with the new cardio (I don't really enjoy outdoor cardio at all). I am also wanting to do a month with the 4DS series - that is my next order.

So for me - that has worked best for results. BTW - I don't have time for 6 days a week working out - just impossible and I burn out and don't want to work out. So I do these 4 days of very intense working out and I have had better results than trying to stick to 6 days.

Just some thoughts for you!
