Jay Leno - I'm glad I live in America - This is long -

JAY LENO;

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right? The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence, 2/3's of the citizenry just ain't happy and wants a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we so unhappy about?'' Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?

Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough.

Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital?

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family and your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This, all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord that we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?

Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day?

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

"We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative."

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Jay Leno

Stop and really think about it.......If you were born in this great country, you got your first blessing the day you were born. If you were not but are now living here, then you are blessed being here. Make no mistake about it, if we refuse to give God thanks for the great things He has done, those blessings can be taken away in a heartbeat!!

RE: Jay Leno - I'm glad I live in America - This is lon...

Oh, oh, Bill! Sticky subject. Flame war I see thou coming :)

I just don't see that Americans are notorious complainers or spoiled brats (there are always exeptions though :), but seriously, I think the majority of people here are fair-minded and reasonable)!

I think the only thing I can and want to comment on, is the notion that the world has a great disdain for Americans because we keep complaining. As someone who still reads/listens to the European News outlets, I can assure you, THIS IS NOT THE REASON!!!

The reason why there is such a disdain about Americans, is our current president's demeanor. You can think about him what you want, like him, dislike him, he does have that Texas Cowboy mentality that doesn't sit too well with most other Western civilisations. i.e. "Bring it on!" "Wanted, dead or alive" ....... uhuh, does not sit well at all :)

Whatever else Mr. Bush has done, you can agree or disagree, but I think a lot of the goodwill and support that other nations, including Arabian Nations showed to us after 9/11 was squandered by the current administration.

That being said, I think things are questioned, and rightfully so. It is every American's right to voice their opinion and discontentment. In my opinion if we as humans would be content with everything we had and didn't push further, and question and improve, we'd still be sitting on palm trees throwing coconuts at each other }(

Wait a minute. The poll was regarding happiness with the current government, not happiness in general. I'll bet if you asked most Americans if they're happy living in this country, you would get a "yes" in the ninety-something percentile. But the majority also understand that the Bush administration is trying to erode those things that make this country great, like freedom and justice. He and his cronies seem to have no concept of the ideals this country is based upon. Fortunately, his 8 years in office weren't enough to ruin us. This country is resilient, and will recover once this administration is gone.

And, excuse me, but what does God have to do with this topic? If anything, I'll bet she will be happy to see the Bush administraton gone too. ;)

>And, excuse me, but what does God have to do with this topic?

ROTFL, Nancy you just crack me up! I noticed the "SHE will be happy ...."

TeTe, good work. I was thinking it didn't sound a thing like Jay Leno also, but was too lazy to look it up.

I always look this stuff up. My uncle sent me something supposedly written/said by George Carlin. Most of it sounded NOTHING like something he would say. The clincher was where it said that he was glad that the word "God" was on U.S. money. Well, I thought everyone knew how outspoken Carlin was about God & Religion...let's just say he's not a big fan. I looked it up, and of course, it wasn't by him. Carlin had even put on his website that he didn't write it.

But my FAVORITE was another one my uncle sent me (for the life of me, I don't know why he sends me this crap...he knows my leanings!). It was the picture of an older veteran with a "Bullsh*t Protector" over his ear. According to my uncle's e-mail, it was a picture taken at a speech that Hillary Clinton and some other Democrat was giving. Well, I looked it up. It was a picture that was taken about a year earlier at a Bush Speech!!! All these other websites and newspapers had stories about it when it actually happened and had even given the guy's name! (the one I was sent just said "an 83-year-old veteran"). Too funny!

Gosh, it's always nice to be called a "spoiled ungrateful brat" when I don't agree with my government.

What you said, Carola and Nancy...

>Gosh, it's always nice to be called a "spoiled ungrateful
>brat" when I don't agree with my government.

Well, now considering the source I find it hilarious. Just gotta love that someone needs to drag someone elses name into the equation. Maybe otherwise they'd be afraid to be considered partisan??? Hmmmmhh!!??

>Whew, glad I checked Snopes. I was thinking, surely Jay Leno
>can't be this freaky??

Me too! I thought Leno had lost it or had a brain fart! But I didn't even think about double-checking the information. Duh .... It's my rest day today, does that count as an excuse why I am so slow today :)? Good work TeTe and GreenEyedLefty

Better learn my lesson here, ALWAYS double-check :)

Carola

Tete, Great work! It is so smart and clever to check these emails' accuracies before spreading!

I'm so glad posters here are so nice even in the face of politics.

I do agree with alot of what Bill posted in the article. Maybe it's my own guilt about having enough food to eat while others in this world are starving.

Leave it to Bill to stir the pot:)

>LMAO I knew this would drive you left wingers nuts..... The
>truth really hurts. LOL

As far as I can see, what you copied wasn't the truth, even though you seem to have bought it, and all the posters here seem quite sane to me. :p

RE: Jay Leno - I'm glad I live in America - This is lon...

This piece (of crap) is so ridiculous it's almost funny, except that the war is most definitely not a laughing matter.

C'mon Bill, how about more fun, less trying to rile up the liberals? Or is trying to rile up liberals what you do for fun? If so, I have a message for my fellow liberals: Don't give him the satisfaction! It's not worth it!

Now wait a second - in his defense Bill has provded more than his share of levity and sanity when things on this site seem to be going in an unfortunate situation. And his sleuth skills have called out more than one troll who we definitely didn't need. And I think Diana Sue is a fabulous fitness inspiration to many of us. Just because we may not all agree on his political views doesn't, IMO call for us to make generalizations about him. (Amy- not trying to belittle your point of view either) I just think that when we get into matters that can become heated we should refrain from pointed comments as we know (we ARE an "educated crowd" afterall) that we will never all agree on these issues.
