I find that there are sections of Jari's workouts that leave me going, "wow" but the entire workout as whole has a completely different feel from Cathe's workouts. I do like them for shaking things up a bit and when I want an extremely calm delivery during my workout. I find them kind of sneaky, especially Get Ripped to the Core because of all the compound moves and all of a sudden I realize I'm working really hard and sweating and my heart rate is getting elevated.

It doesn't bother me that she does the push ups on her knees. I do some on my knees and some on my toes. She's completely different from Cathe.

I like having a variety of instructors/workouts to choose from so they aren't all the same...that would be boring!:)

Tneah -

I had ordered RCR a while back, downloaded the eBook and leafed through it; I thought "wow this is easy, totally lame and nothing new here." I returned it. Boy was I wrong. I read a review of the results on Skwigg's blog and decided that this could be the thing that I'm looking for to blast through my plateau (on the last 10lbs)! I did my first circuit weight training last night and it KICKED MY BUTT. I burned 700 calories via my Polar HRM. And mind you, I've been doing Cathe for a long time and this year I "upgraded" to working with a trainer at my gym. So by no means would I call myself a beginner or even intermediate...these RCR workouts are amazing and I'm excited to see what 6 weeks will do for me!

I used heavier weights, and I used weights where she suggested none. I seriously LOVE the kick lunges. I didn't use weights with those because i kicked as high as I could, and returned to a deep reverse lunge. I found that was enough:)

I personally felt the program lacked upper body work, so I added a set of pull-ups. I would switch grips when I moved into a different circuit. Pull-ups give a lot of bang for the buck!

My heart pounded out of my chest through all the circuits. I completed all the circuits 3x'. You can start with 2, or increase to 4 if you have the energy! I always seem to hit a wall half way through the 2nd circuit. Half way through I would have to push myself to continue.
The circuits last about an hour with pull-ups.

It's a great fat burning workout for summer!
:)

>hmmm honestly I do use heavier weights than Jari often.

I did RTTC yesterday and only used 2 risers during the step-ups. I made a mental note to bring out my high rise step for that one. I thought that segment was going no where, so went to grab some heavy weights for shoulder presses. I'm feeling it today!!!

I agree with you about following the modifier using a heavier weight.
I just wish I could understand that one sentence Jari repeats often! LOL

Angela,

You are right in that there are sections that are quite tough like, if I remember correctly, the spider push ups. I still have her workouts - my sister uses Slim and Lean or something like that and it was tough for her.

I was envious of the way she looks in Ripped original and the Slim & Lean, but by RTTC I thought she was a bit too thin. I don't mind Jari's personality or her voice or her instructional style, but if I look at her for too long I start to get paranoid that I am too fat!

Amy Bento is a nice shape and in much better health. Really I like my instructor to do all the exercises with no modification.

"She's not in it to be beautiful." I think I understand what you're saying, but I think Cathe IS beautiful. In her earlier workouts, in her current workouts, in ALL her workouts - I think Cathe looks healthy, happy, and STRONG.

I have a feeling none of us truly realizes how strong Cathe is. I mean, sure she uses a 40# barbell to do squats during a video shoot, but some of those shoots last 10-hours. I get tired after 90 minutes!

Cathe (and all fitness instructors) are inspiring.

If Jari is sick, I hope she gets better.

I don't see how you could mistake Jari for a man...?
Shes obviously female just too thin.

As far as the phrase she uses I always hear "good on you" also. I figured it was a Canadian phrase or something? lol. I dunno. but I'm sure thats what she said.

Jess

"Good on you" is a very Canadian phrase. Charlene Prickett uses it in her workouts. I am originally from Calgary and remember as a little girl in the 60's watching my mom to Charlene's half hour workouts every morning and hearing "good on you". It means that what you are doing looks...good on you. I love that phrase as it brings back good memories.

Cheryl

I like her workouts: some of them give me a huge burn.
I do think she looks too thin in more recent workouts (I'm tempted to feed her some of those 'carbs' she keeps talking about). She was thin in her original, but I really noticed how 'skinny' she was in her other workouts. Her abs seem to have definition not because of muscle, but because she has very low body fat, and I find it rather disturbing to see her ribs so much on some moves.

In the 'too thin' workout, she says that we can see the changes that her body, and one of the background exerciser's bodies, have gone through from following the program---I didn't think it was a good advertisement for her program based on her, but the backgrounder looked great.

>I was beginning to think I'm very out of shape....
>I walk away from Jari's workouts drenched in sweat, feeling
>like a wet noodle!

Circuit-type workouts (moving quickly from one body part to another) are supposed to burn more calories, and I really feel like that's happening with Jari, based on the amount of sweat that comes off me doing them. Her workouts make me sweat more than many others, though they don't necessarily FEEL that difficult while I'm working out (except for that endless chest-press track in Slim and Lean.

Regardless of how Jari looks - I tried her workouts originally, before switching to all-Cathe workouts. I found Jari to be too monotone and boring to workout with - I don't get the same burn or DOMS as I do with Cathe workouts.

I looked up this thread using Jari's name on the search engine because I was trying to see if I could get some good reviews of her workouts, but unfortunately what I found was this awful tacky thread with tons of you talking trash about her figure. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

I'm with Jess - I find Jari very soothing and her workouts are excellent...she filmed that series back to back and became more gaunt as time went on because of the intense filming...Saw clips of her recently and she's fleshed out abit..I cancelled STS because her workouts are so thorough and SO Reasonably priced.

While she is thing and not the type of figure I want, I did talk about the quality of her workouts and the dvd in general - I just don't like her "style" of working out. Cathe is very motivating and FUN! Jari is very straight-forward and monotone...boring.

Keep in mind a few of us actually do like Jari's workouts and there's some good reviews in this thread if you read the whole thing. Although I personally like her workouts, she and Cathe have wildly different styles, attitudes, the whole shebang. And being on a Cathe website...you'll probably get a taste of that.

I definitely like Jari for a change of pace and especially when I want a super calm delivery from the instructor, but all the carb, diet, and look how lean we've become gets really old.

P.S. I picked up all of my Jari's except one at Ross for $4.99 to $5.99 so keep checking Ross if you want to try her. I've seen S&L, GR1000, and GRTTC recently at various Ross stores.

I've thoughtfully considered your comment, and I agree that some of the remarks were tacky and unkind, but I think a fitness instructor's "figure" is fair game. I'm startled by Jari's appearance. She looks anorexic to me. And as others have noted, some of her workouts are good, but I prefer an instructor who looks the very picture of good health.

ETA that I always notice the physique of a fitness instructor. I view it as an advertisement for what they might be able to do for me. And just as I wouldn't be inclined to choose an overweight or out of shape PT, I wouldn't want one who looked gaunt either. ;)

Interesting someone is bringing Jari up. I gotta tell ya, I've been doing a rotation using Jari and Cathe and I am getting fantastic results. Within two weeks the definition in my arms and abs have noticibly increased. Have never been able to achieve this with seven years of just Cathe workouts.

It is apparent that Jari is a very caring person. I like that she has a nutritional expert on her tapes who gives advice on how to eat healthy and there are also healthy recipes provided.

As far as her build...she is very thin. I know a family with four girls who are built similarly. They all eat quite well but built very much like they're mother who is also very thin so it's a genetic thing.

Because I am 53, I like that on Ripped and Chiseled she includes seasoned members from her classes for her background team. Looking at them motivates and inspires me!
