Is this mean of me?

Is it mean to NOT remind someone about a job opening in my office, when they could easily find that info themselves on the website?

Here's why: A couple months ago I told a colleague about a upcoming job opening in my office. She says she really wants to work where I do. I gave her the web address, and told her to keep checking it because I had no idea when it would be posted. Well, it turns out it's now posted, and I don't think she knows about it or she would have called me. I debated calling her and letting her know, but frankly, I'm thinking if she had a bit more gumption, she would have found it herself already. I mean, you can do email alerts when something is posted. She's very nice and good at her job, but I don't want yet *another* person in the office that has to be pushed and prodded...I think it's very important to be pro-active, and go after things you want.

What would you do?

If she's a good person and does her job well, I wouldn't hold it against her that she didn't see the posting. Email can be funky - she might have signed up for the alert, and it unknowingly was dumped into her spam. Or she might not be able to check the site as often because she's busy working. In my experience, it's very often been other people who connect us with opportunities, so by not reminding her, you might very well be letting a solid candidate slip away. I would give her the heads up.

Hello,

I agree with Cathy. Maybe she's too busy with work to keep checking, you don't know. And if it is not going out of your way to send her a reminder then why not? I tend to do this all the time, as I find that people tend to forget or just too busy. I'd only do it if it doesn't cost me anything or takes up too much of my time though.

Give her a heads up to remind her, and then let it go, its up to her at that point to follow through.

I would tell her about it, if she is good at her job and you think she would be enjoyable to work with. Sometimes life gets crazy and she might have missed this posting in the shuffle. However, I do know what you mean about not having another dead weight around the office. It seems she's pretty competent though so I'd tell her.
