Is Special K a 'clean' food?

I'm not sure about special K, but I was reading the ingredients on my box of Total and was very suprised to see "sugar" as the 2nd ingredient! No wonder is tastes so good!

Sorry, Jennifit, but I would say no. Take a look at the Kashi brand of cereals. They are more wholesome than the Kellogg's products.

I am following the Burn the Fat,Feed the Muscle and it recommends
eating Shredded Wheat (original/spoon size). It has absoulutely no sugar. 1 serving of shredded wheat with skim milk and some fruit qualifies as a complete breakfast meal under the BFFM program. I was unsure of how I would like it, but it's actually not that bad.

Good Luck,
Carolyn

Because of sodium issues, Shredded Wheat (the bite size kind) were the only cereal DH ate for years. I did find the Kashi Organic Autumn Wheat, which I like. It does have cane juice in it, but, sorry, I sometimes want a little sweetness (it has 7g sugars). DH started eating it, too. It stays crunchier than shredded wheat, too.

Funny that this thread should come up. I just bought a HUGE box of Special K and was wondering the same thing. When the third ingredient is sugar, I should have known. Bummer. Denial is a beautiful thing.

On the back it promotes their losing weight plan. Basically your meal plan is to eat a couple of bowls of cereal, their protein water, and a couple of bars. I was starving just reading it.

Sugar being the second ingredient isn't what puts up the red flag for me with Special K (and most other cereals). It's all those other ingredients that I can't pronounce (not to mention the high fructose corn syrup.)

I don't really eat clean, but I do try to eat foods with few added ingredients, especially ones that I can't pronounce or recognize. (or something that just seems like it doesn't belong...like whole wheat bread with fish oil...huh?)

IMO Special K is a "fluff" cereal .. it is low in calories .. but not much else .. when I ate it .. I would be starving 30 minutes later ..

. . I just started the Kashi - Go Lean cereal .. and it fills me up .. in fact I can only eat 1/2 of what I would usually eat .. think it gets in my stomach and swells .. LOL .. but very tasty .. and very filling. And the nurtitional value is excellent.

{{ and I am not a very "clean" eater }}

I second the Kashi Autumn Shredded wheat or any Kashi cereal for that matter.

Special K is a refined food and can spike you sugar levels too quickly making you, as the above poster stated, starving.

That is definitely true!! I was hungry this morning about 30 minutes after I ate it...ahhhhhhhh I just bought a huge box, too!

So, one more question...so if I eat clean, does that mean no sugar?? (I know if it fruit that is probably ok, but is that all the sugar I can eat??)

Sugar is highly processed, so yes, if you're striving to eat clean, you should eat as little sugar as you can. You'll find that once you start cutting back on it, you crave it less.

Special K is my main diet! :D

Seriously, I love the "fruit and yogurt" kind, and I eat two bowls a day. It works for me!

I can't stand those Kashi cereals and if you can't either, try Cheerios or something and sprinkle some All Bran or fiber one in. I do that with Cheerios and Shredded Wheat. Actually, I do that no matter what cereal I am eating. Seems more tolerable, and palatable, to me that those hard core "clean" cereals.

Special K is refined crap. So sad that it is marketed as being so healthy! You could eat pretty much any cereal twice a day and lose weight. It is funny what the consumers buy into when they are not educated about nutrition. :D

"I can't stand those Kashi cereals". It's funny how different we all are. I literally have to hold myself back from eating the whole box of Kashi Good Friends cereal! I could eat that stuff all day long. I just love it.

I don't like Special K either, gets soggy too fast and too sweet for me. I prefer Kashi Cinnamon Harvest (Autumn Wheat with Cinnamon), Oatmeal with flaxseeds, wheat germ and bee pollen and Ekiziel 4:49 Cinnamon Raison.

ETA: Special K is not considered "clean" IMO, too highly processed AND too much sugar.

I just bought Special K Chocolatey Delight--it is good!! But like
the other posters said, it's not a "health" food, especially with
those chocolate pieces!!! I'm going to try the Kashi cereals
soon. Thanks!:)

I wish I could say that for myself.....

Ditto for me. Kashi tastes so good to me and it is loaded with fiber. I cant eat a bowl early in the a.m. and last until 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon before I realize I am hungry.
